We wish you all great Diwali celebration with your family and friends and best wishes for

the New Year of V.S. 2074. We have Diwali Day celebration, combined with our General

Body Meeting, on Sunday, October 22.

We completed the celebration of the Paryushan Parva during Aug18-25 and Das Lakshan

Parva Aug 26-Sept 5. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee,

we want to offer “Michhami Dukkadam” to all of you. We seek forgiveness from all of you

for any transgressions through Thoughts, Words and Actions.

Here are the highlights of Paryushan and other events at the temple:

• Members enjoyed the Paryushan Parva with scholar Shri. Pravinbhai L. Shah. He

also conducted special lecture for our youth.

• Smt. Bhavanaben Mehta conducted the lecture for youth and ladies this year.

• Members enjoyed the Bhavna with Bhanubhai Vora’s Swar Kinnari Group.

• We had 36 adults and 4 youth members who completed Atthai (8 fasts) or higher

Tapasya in good 'Shata'. Please see the later part of Jainvani for a complete list

of all the Tapasvis.

• Many Study class student did Tapasya on all eight days of Paryushan age ranging

from 4 years to 17 years

• New Pledges during the Paryushan week added over $103K

• We are delighted to announce that we have received the sponsorship to do Sakal

Sangh Parna for 2019. We already have sponsor for 2018.

• Many members of JSGD observed the "Das Lakshana Parva" followed by the

Kshama Vani Puja and lecture by Samaniji Dr. Suryanshnidhiji and Samaniji

Sudhannidhiji on September 9. We would like to convey our Best Wishes and

"Shata" for graciously completing the Parva.

Other events:

• We ran “India Flood Relief Fund” from 08/01 thru 08/23. Overwhelming support

from all members helped us to raise appx $8500 for this noble cause. Thank

you All.

• More than 35 Study class students participated in Stavan and Sutra Recital

(8/13). Age was ranging from 4 to 17 years. Program was well executed and

received due to individual and collective performance from students. Program

was followed by light dinner.

• On Sept 23, JOS had Bhaktamar/Moti Shanti Recital followed by Yoga and

online YouTube lecture by Pujya Acharya Vijay Shri Ratna Sundar Surishwarji

Maharaj Saheb.

• Ayambil Oli (9/27to 10/5) was done by 42 members (see list in later part of the

Jain Vani) thanks to the great efforts of the Ayambil Oli coordinators and

volunteers. Ayambil Oli was followed by Parna (10/6) for all Ayambil Oli

Tapasvis.

• Study class had Annual Day program on 10/8. The performances varied from

reciting Sutra to dance to skit. 108 students participated ranging from age 4 to

16.

Our Pujari Shri. Deepakbhai and Kiranben Shah will be in India from Nov. 15 to Dec

15. We have made arrangement of Shri. Kanchanbhai and Dhanlaxmiben Patel

during his absence to perform his duties. If you are available and can help out with

Snatra pujas and Sundays Pakshal during Deepakbhai’s absence, would be

appreciated.

Ingredients:

1 cup Maida

3 tbsp cocoa powder

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1 can condensed milk

1 stick butter

3/4 cup water

3 tsp vanilla essence

Method:

Sieve the dry ingredients together. Cut the butter into small pieces and Melt the butter in the microwave. Add the vanilla essence, melted butter, condensed milk, & water to the dry ingredient and mix the batter well. Preheat the oven to 380°F. Grease an 8" pan and pour in the batter. Place the pan in the oven and bake it for 20 mins. After 20 mins reduce the oven temp to 360°F and bake it for another 20 mins. Place a toothpick to make sure that the cake is cooked all the way thru. Take 6 table spoon of sugar and mix with 3/4 cup warm water to make a simple syrup. Pour the syrup over the cake as soon as it comes out of the oven. Enjoy!!

• Recently we have added a suitable number of new books to our temple library.

• Please go to temple web page and look under library - we have the index of library books and few other reading materials.

• In past month or so we have put out more than 100 books that we called surplus for library and members have gladly taken it to use for their home library.

• We encourage the members to take advantage of such activity. We will do the display of surplus books periodically in library room.

• We are open for any suggestions that members may have to make library more user friendly.

The Chaturmas that begins on Ashadh Chaturdashi comes to an end on the full moon day in Kartik.

After this, the Jain Sadhus and Sadhvis begin their Vihaar, i.e., travel on foot. This day also is

celebrated as the birthday of Kalikal Sarvagna, Acharya Bhagavant Sri Vijay Hemachandrasooriji.

This is the day when Rishabh dev bhagwan’s two sons – Dravid and Varikhill achieved liberation with

100 million other muni raaj on Shatrunjay - Palitana. A pilgrimage to Shatrunjay-Palitana on this day

is considered to be of great importance. Thousands of Jains go on pilgrimages on this day.

Any tapascharya done on this day, its Fal multiplied by 100 million times. So, let’s join together to

celebrate Kartik Poonam in a novel way this year by performing Samuhik Ekasana. The sign-up sheet

is posted on the bulletin board.

Bahuman event was very well conducted by Peenal Shah and Vinit Shah. Special thanks to Megha

Jain, Deval Shah & Shashin Shah for event decoration.

▪ Barsa Sutra Darshan event on Samvatsari day morning was coordinated by Vinay Shah and Ankit

Shah. Bipin & Sohini Shah and Chirag Jhaveri were key supporting volunteers.

Das Lakshan Parva is followed by Paryushan. This is a great festival of soul purification.

▪ We would like to thank all co-ordinators for Puja, Das Lakshan Vidhan & Cultural Activity (Vishal Doshi,

Parul Shah, Sudha Jain, Purushottam Deo, Gunjan Jain, Priya Jain) & key volunteers for making Das

Lakshan Parva Successful.

▪ Kshamavani is the unique function for which every Jain should be proud of. Like previous years too we

Ayambil Oli was very successful with 42 complete Olis and many more one-day Aayambil tapsvis:

▪ This year Ayamabil Oli was conducted with different apparoach to distribute the amount of work

involved on volunteers who are putting their Heart and Soul in offering their help. For religious activity in

prayer hall or Ayambil food downstairs, we always can count on JSGD volunteers and their

commitment. Thanks to Sharadbhai Shah and other members for leading the daily religious activities.

▪ Special appreciation to key volunteers: Geeta Shah, Anuja Shah and Niral Shah. From Groc

procurement to cooking/serving, we always can count on dedicated volunteers. Thank you for your

commitment. This event would not have been possible without all the volunteers who came daily for

serving, utensil cleaning or all other activities involved to make this event successful. We would like to

Since February 2016, JOS has organized various activities including some educational and fun activities like

games, music programs, Bingo etc. We hope to continue this on regular basis depending upon the availability

of facility. We like to invite people to share their talent with this enthusiastic group.

We met last on September 23rd, 2017. After our routine reciting of Bhaktamer stotra, Bruhad Shanti and Arti

and Mangal divo, the group proceeded down stair for participation in easy Yoga session led by Mrs. Bharti

Shah, a very experienced Yoga instructor in our local community. About 50 seniors attended and did Yoga for

about 45 minutes either sitting in the Chair or on the mat on the floor.

Kamal Jain who directs weekly Yoga at the temple on every Sunday, also was in attendance. He encouraged

people to take advantage of ongoing weekly Yoga sessions. The program was well received by all. Thanks to

After the delicious lunch, a video presentation by Ratnasundersuri Maharaj Saheb was shown on the screen.

This was enjoyed by all.

After the tea and snacks, the meeting was adjourned. We appreciate help from volunteers from EC and BOT.

Sutra Stavan Recital

Study class had Sutra & Stavan Recital on Aug 13th, which was followed by light dinner. 35+ students (ages 4

years to 15 years) participated in this event and recited various sutras like Namutththunam, Laghu Shanti,

Bhaktamar, Sakalarhat and quite a few Stavans.

Essay Competition

This year’s study class essay competition has been announced for Group 5 and above. Deadline for submitting

essay was Sept 10th, 2017. We have 35 students participating in the essay. Younger groups also participated

with lots of enthusiasm. The results will be announced in near future.

Study Class Initiatives and Class Changeover for this Year:

Students will move to next class based on attendance, exams and teachers’ recommendations starting

October 29th class this year. We have 108 registered students with 91 students over 60% attendance. Our

study classes are run by 19 teachers and 12 volunteers. We introduced Google Classroom as a part of our

new initiative to streamline the communication and keep up with changing educational delivery methods. We

are also using JSGD website and Remind 101 to communicate with JSGD study class community.

Annual Day Program:

We organized Annual Day Program on Sunday, October 8th, 2017. 108 students participated with lots of

enthusiasm. The 2 hours program was followed by light dinner. We sincerely appreciate and praise all the

efforts and commitment of our students and teachers towards making Annual Day so successful.

Hindi Pathshala:

Joy Update

Jai Jinendra!

Even though it has only been a few weeks since the elections of the new board,

JOY has been working hard and diligently with lots of energy and goals for this

year! On September 25th, JOY organized Teacher’s Day, where JOY members

took the spot of the Study Class coordinators and teachers so we could

experience what it was like to run just one Study Class. We decided who was

going to teach each class, we taught classes, and we cooked the food. It took a lot

of hard work, so we would like to thank the students who participated and the

people that do this every two weeks. We all gained a greater appreciation for what

they do for us.

On October 22nd, which is the day of the Diwali program, JOY will conduct the

general body meeting at 2:00pm. We will talk about the goals for this year,

future events, the t-shirt competition, and we will have a ton of fun activities.

Speaking of the t-shirt competition, designs must be submitted by October 22nd

in order to be voted on. Creating a design will only take a few minutes of your time

and you could win a prize if your design is selected so participate. In addition to

the general body meeting, JOY will also be doing Rangoli and making bookmarks

for the Children’s Home on October 22nd from 10:00am to 12:00noon. Anyone

that would like to participate is welcome. Navkar Jaap is also coming up in one

month, so please check your calendars to make sure that you will be there on

Thanksgiving Day. Navkar Jaap is one of JOY’s largest events every year, so

please come out and support us. Your tummy will be glad you did!
