t’s official. The wide cross-section of Jamaicans working up anappetite for dining out is still growing, and that makes the Guide aneven more important culinary blueprint for finding your way throughthe options. Let’s take you on a new journey of food and flavour.

With new restaurants opening all the time, well-established eateriesstill work hard to keep standards high by offering rustic ambiance,

sophistication, exotic fare and consistent turnout of signature dishes andservice. The handy Guide allows for a fast and informative way to choosewhere and what to eat all year – especially each autumn duringRestaurant Week.

In this issue, we’ve expanded our directory of restaurants, grouping thosein and around the Ocho Rios and Montego Bay area. In addition to menus(the reason you get the Menu Guide in the first place), you’ll find a freshcrop of sumptuous food images to tickle the taste buds. There is also apeek into the world of wines, reminding us how much a good wine can‘make’ your dining experience. You should also fit our food calendar intoyour own, keeping space for all the various culinary and cultural mixershappening through-out the year.

As usual, we welcome your suggestions as to how to improve Jamaica’s favourite ‘what/where/ when to eat’companion. And now that you have a good idea of what the Guide has tooffer, do partake in as many of the featured Jamaican delights as possible.Welcome to Volume 5 of The Jamaica Restaurant Menu Guide.

“You don’t have to cook fancy orcomplicated masterpieces – justgood food from fresh ingredients.”– Julia Child

Julia Child could easily have had ourcountry in mind when she made that statement, for Jamaica is blessed with a wide variety of fresh

ingredients and an even wider array ofherbs and spices to stimulate the palate. And since food is an essential item forboth us who live here as well as thosewho visit, this variety helps DestinationJamaica stand out from the crowd.

The good thing is that Jamaica’s cuisinehas come of age in its diversity. We canprepare fresh delectable fare as easily as we can prepare fancy masterpieces to tantalize the most discerning palate. It represents our bold and insouciantflavour with undertones of African, Asianand European influences blended to formone distinct taste. And this mouth-watering food is presented with qualityservice in an awe-inspiring ambience.

That is where the Jamaica RestaurantMenu Guide comes in ... this delightfulpublication presents information andimages of the many eating places acrossthe island. There is a wide cross section, from rustic roadside stops to five-starspeciality restaurants and, as always, the images will stimulate the senses even before you get to the venues.

The Jamaica Tourist Board is pleased to beassociated once more with this publication. And we congratulate the publishers oncontinuing to contribute in this meaningfulway. I invite you to leaf through the pagesand take your cue from the informationwithin. Then go out and enjoy the manydining options. After all, food is a commonground in this universal experience.

Happy reading and bon appétit!

The world of wine is a truly fascinating one. What otherlibation do we enjoy by ourselves or in a group, that canappeal to all our senses and our intellect at the same time? Each glass of wine we consume is connected to some

specific geography, has some interesting history, is made and trulyenjoyed by people who are passionate about the subject. We’re nottalking about wine snobs here – nobody likes a wine snob.

Wine and FoodFood and wine are meant to go together. However, and MOSTIMPORTANTLY, not all food and wine taste good together. Are thereany food-and-wine rules? Only one: The best wine to pair with themeal is the one you like!

Long gone are the days of the old food pairing of red wine with redmeat, white wine with white meat and fish. For some, the endobjective is to choose a wine and food combination that will bringout the best in the food and enhance the subtleties of the wine. For others, the objective is to choose a combination that includesfood they enjoy without affecting the way the winemaker intendedhis wine to be consumed. Today’s vintners are crafting more andmore ‘food friendly’ wines for us to enjoy.

Despite what you might think, foods almost always change theway wines taste, hardly the other way around. On a few occasions, the perfect match explodes on your palette and with all the starsin alignment creates a magical gastronomic experience.

The wine lists in Jamaican restaurants continue to improve. In fact, a number of places featured in this issue were nominated forthe Jamaica Observer Food Awards ‘Best Wine List’ category in 2008and 2009. So remember to start asking for the wine list onceyou’ve been seated.

What’s All The Fuss About

Anyway?

8 Wine

Page 11: Jamaica Menu Guide Volume 5

What to serve with dessert?Sweet foods reduce the winearomas and make wine texturessuch as acidity, bitterness, astringency and tannins stronger. So it will be a better diningexperience if you finish the big red wine you had with dinnerbefore the dessert is brought to the table. The wine you havewith sweet foods should be equalto or greater than the sweetness in the food.

Chris Reckord writes a weekly winecolumn in the Jamaica Observer. He is also a director of Kingston’sone-stop location for all things‘Cigars.Wines. Spirits’: Molasses –A Taste of Jamaica, which is alsohome to Bin26 Wine Bar. Pleasesend your questions and commentsto [email protected].

LOCAL GRILLING CHAMPION

GOES INTERNATIONAL

Jo Jo’s Farm Market first opened its doorsto the public on Waterloo Road, Kingstonin 2002. It may all have begun as the little

‘Uptown Coronation Market’, with its largeselection of fresh, local produce, but after justa few short years, JoJo’s added take-out andJo Jo’s Jerk Pit & More, becoming one ofKingston’s best kept secrets, a place whereone can ‘Feel Jamaica and Taste Jamaica’.

While still sizzling from their win at the 2009Jack Daniel’s All Jamaica Grill Off, Jo Jo’searned the opportunity to represent Jamaicaat the world’s largest and most prestigiousinvitational grilling competition: the 2009American Royal Barbeque in Kansas City,Missouri, the most prestigious barbequecompetition in the United States and thelargest barbecue contest in the world.Joining nearly 500 grilling teams from acrossthe globe and competing in four culinarycontests, Team Jamaica took Kansas City bystorm from the get-go.

On Friday night, known on the circuit asFantastic Friday, the grilling and partyingcarried on through the night before theofficial judging on Saturday. With its boothfestooned in red, green and gold, TeamJamaica fired up their grill pit and settled infor 16 hours of slow cooking brisket. JamaicaTrade & Invest and the Jamaica Tourist Boardsupported the effort, and as our coloursflowed, so too did our Jamaican hospitality,Appleton Rum and Red Stripe Beer – theperfect partner for Team Jamaica’s samplingsof jerk pork and chicken.

And while there are differences betweenJamaica’s seasonings and grilling methodscompared to traditional American Royal barbeque methods, it was all thumbs up forTeam Jamaica’s fare from the patrons. Addedto that, Jamaica was the first English-speaking Caribbean country to be invited tothis prestigious event, earned coverage fromtwo television stations, local newspapers andCNN, and made an impressive mark on thecompetition, endearing many to ourtraditional excellence in hospitality.

“The popularity of our jerk cooking andsavoury seasonings among the public putJamaica on the culinary map for futurecompetitions of this kind,” said Jo Jo’s AnnaChin when she got back to Jamaica. “Wemade our presence known, and despite thelong grilling hours, fall temperatures and ourcultural differences in grilling methods, itwas a fantastic experience, not only for TeamJamaica – Jo Jo’s Jerk Pit & More – but forJamaica itself, as a viable brand in theAmerican culinary arena. All of us on TeamJamaica bid farewell to Kansas City warmedin spirit and flushed with pride for ourcountry.

From Jamaica to Kansas City, Jo Jo’s hasproven itself a culinary tour de force in theinternational grilling arena.

Come feel Jamaica... Taste Jamaica.

32The name conjures up thoughts ofstrength and vitality, of legends made inthe Mother Continent and the NewWorld. Despite what you may think,Mandingo now also stands for thehottest new roots tonic wine on themarket, capturing the spirit and vitalityof the West African people after whom it is named.

Fans of fitness and good food should notbe surprised that the product stands atthe top of its category. Unlike other‘health wine’ products, Mandingo is atrue tonic, an exotic blend of sarsaparilla, astragalus, maca root, panax ginseng andother roots. Specially fermented to a richred colour, the result is a delectablearoma, undeniably smooth taste and akicking after-effect. Not only are theseherbs and roots age-old health boosters, but they’re also widely regarded asantiviral protection against colds, the fluand some allergies. Good news fordiscerning foodies who want a nice coldcomplement to a tasty Jamaican dish likejerk pork – and some health benefits atthe same time. Just look at the array ofadditives that fortify Mandingo:
