The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office provided a photo of the Samurai-type sword used during an officer involved shooting in Kearny.

Pinal County Sheriff’s Detectives are investigating an officer-involved shooting that proved fatal for a Kearny man. On Friday, May 8, Kearny Police Department requested the assistance of the PCSO-Criminal Investigations Bureau following a shooting that occurred in the 59700 block of E. Bidegain Pl., Kearny. According to Tim Gaffney, PCSO Public Information Officer, detectives learned that at 11:03 p.m., a woman called 9-1-1 to report that her husband had returned to their house. The dispatcher reported hearing yelling and screaming in the background. The husband was later identified as Shaun Johnson, 35.

Kearny man killed during officer involved shooting Kearny Police Officers told detectives that they had contacted Johnson earlier in the evening after he had been asked to leave a local bar; he had reportedly been causing a disturbance. As KPD officers arrived in the neighborhood, they met the woman as she was walking down the street with her children. She told officers that her husband, Johnson, was inside the residence. According to PCSO, as two KPD officers approached the residence, Johnson charged out at them, swinging a Samurai sword. “The officers gave repeated verbal commands for him to drop the sword,” PCSO Sheriff Paul Babeu said, “but he refused.” Johnson turned and ran behind the residence still carrying the sword. As officers chased after him, they rounded a corner and Johnson was waiting for them with the sword above his head in a striking stance. “An officer who was 6 to 8 feet away from him feared for his safety and fired four rounds from his department

issued handgun, striking Shaun in the chest,” Babeu said. “(He) received emergency medical attention at the scene, but was pronounced deceased.” The case remains under investigation by PCSO detectives. PCSO Detectives are continuing with the investigation at this time.

According to a 2014 Census Bureau report – Statistics show in 2010, there were 40.3 million people aged

65 and above in the U.S. That is 13 percent of the United States population. That number, to no one’s surprise, is growing. The trend is very evident here in the Copper Corridor. We are very fortunate to have people who are working to ensure our elderly and most vulnerable in our communities are fed and nourished. The Hayden Senior Center is one of those groups who supplies many seniors within both Gila and Pinal Counties with a warm meal. Some of them gather for lunch at the senior center, the vast majority have their meals delivered to them. Since the revaluation of ASARCO LLC copper company and huge reductions in their property value and cut-backs by

the State of Arizona in revenue sharing funds, both the county and the Town of Hayden have taken a huge hit to their budgets and have been struggling. A trickle-down effect of the loss in revenue from the property taxes and revenue sharing has been an enormous budget deficit in town operations, including the Senior Citizen Center. I was honored to see my counterparts on the Gila County Board of Supervisors donating $30,000 to help keep the Senior Center operating and to serve this area’s senior population. It was a very generous and wise use of their scarce public funds. As I was aware that many of the seniors fed and cared for by the Hayden Senior Center were from Pinal County, I placed an agenda item on the Pinal County Board of Supervisor’s agenda for a donation to the

Gila and Pinal County Boards of Supervisors Combine Forces to Help Hayden Senior Center

Senior Center as well. In the month of March, 2,600 congregate and home delivered meals were served to area seniors – more than half of those meals were delivered to Pinal County residents across the Copper Corridor, ranging from Superior to SaddleBrooke. Many of these meals are delivered to people who are homebound and cannot travel. For many of our seniors this will be the only meal they will have for the day. Staff from the Hayden Senior Center also do welfare checks on these folks to ensure their safety. The original motion that I requested was for $10,000, but thanks to my fellow board members understanding the seriousness of this issue, they unanimously supported and approved my amendment to increase the amount to $20,000 for the Senior Center.Paraphrasing my fellow board member Steve Miller: Government takes over the role that the private sector will not.

Simply put, this is our role. It is a moral imperative that we are doing all we can to help our seniors and most vulnerable.

As a proud member of National Founda-tion for Women Legislators (NFWL), I am excited to announce that this orga-

nization is partnering with the National Rifle Association to sponsor an academic scholarship for female students who will be attending col-lege or are currently attending college. Winners receive a $3,000 college scholarship and an-expense-paid trip to attend NFWL’s Annual Conference. At the Conference, these young ladies speak, receive leadership train-ing, and network with lawmakers. For several winners in prior years, their NFWL scholarship made the difference in funding their atten-dance at college. Nearly all winners have found their passion for public leadership ignited or strengthened. I am excited about this scholarship and en-courage all female students in Pinal County to apply. I would like to see a young woman from Pinal County win this scholarship. This year, the eighteenth annual Bill of Rights Essay Contest of NFWL and the National Rifle Association will award six female high school juniors and seniors with a $3,000 college schol-arship. The six winners will receive a trip to the 2015 NFWL Annual Conference, September 11-15 in Oklahoma City, OK. To find out more information about this scholarship, please go to this URL: http://goo.

Please send your essay to me and I will be hap-py to sponsor all who are interested in receiving this scholarship. ([email protected]) I will once again attend the conference and will be honored to introduce and present the scholarship to the Pinal County winner.

Kearny Police Report

Rose Law Group and the county supervisors On April 24, 2015, the Rose Law Group sponsored a breakfast at their law office in Scottsdale for Pinal County Supervisors House and Smith. The Group spokesperson released a written announcement concerning the breakfast that stated: “Rose Law Group has always supported District 4 Supervisor, Anthony Smith and District 5 Supervisor, Todd House as they have such a business friendly balanced approach to governance. We…are so happy to have them as County Supervisors….While there is no cost to attend (the breakfast), if you feel inclined to contribute to their campaigns as we do (Todd House campaign donation-2014-$1000.00), contributions are limited to 2,500 per individual.” In February, 2015, the Rose Law Group argued for the approval of eight outdoor marijuana grow areas and approximately ten marijuana dispensaries in Pinal County. Supervisors House and Smith voted to approve a change to a zoning ordinance that can bring about the open grow farms, even though the Pinal County Planning and Zoning Commission voted 9-1 against the ordinance change, and

the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office and multiple citizens groups and individuals also strongly voiced their opinions not to approve the firm’s effort. According to news reports, Smith and House labeled this open grow marijuana effort as the “grand experiment.” The associated nuances of the Rose Law Group sponsored breakfast and the critical political issues now facing Pinal County are, at least to me - a taxpayer and Pinal County citizen – bothersome. For the record, I am opposed to the legalization of marijuana, as I am equally opposed to the recent raising of Pinal County property taxes. There are those who suggest that legalization of marijuana will lower property taxes, and perhaps that is true, but I doubt it. I propose however, that the connective costs to Pinal County taxpayers as a result of the negative effects (especially on our youth) of the legalization of marijuana will be – ultimately - colossal in both financial and societal perspectives. /s/ Glenn A. Walp, PhDGold Canyon, AZ

The people of Kearny and their visiting families really stepped up to the plate at last Saturday’s steak fry, auction, and appearance of PRIMO at the General

Kearny Inn. All the money went to the pool fund. The Rotary Club took the lead (with the Misita and Dunn families a large part of it all). Thousands of dollars were raised, and Senator Barbara McGuire surprised us all with checks from Meridian Engineering and the Arizona Trial Lawyers Association totaling $1,200... and she is seeking more. Now, if I may jump from joy to concern, I urgently request any residents who have not done so to fill out the economic survey for the town and get it in right away. The

survey was mailed out again, and copies of the survey are also available at Town Hall and the Kearny Library. We need at least 100 more replies to qualify for a grant which will provide much-needed fire hydrants as well as the funding for our ten year plan (which is a prerequisite for receiving most state and federal grants). The new fire hydrants will provide increased safety and reduced insurance costs. In the simplest terms, if we do not receive this grant, we will not be able to have new fire hydrants nor will we be able to replace the old ones. If we do not receive this grant, we will not have the necessary documentation (the ten year plan) to acquire new grants. The town will suffer

Stepping Up for the Kearny Pool; Survey Input Still Needed for Grantin many ways. The best way all of us can help is to fill out the survey form and return it. The purpose of the survey is to ascertain one fact – the income level of the town. This is an important item in all grant requests, and I do not believe that the 2010 census accurately represents Kearny’s income level. In the survey, you will be asked for your yearly income. A “help sheet” is provided to help you figure it out. Then you may mail it in to Central Arizona Governments or take it to Town Hall. The incomes will be totaled and averaged to produce the result. Yes, we need only about 100 more replies to produce a statistically reliable sampling of the town’s income. Please step up to the plate on this concern, as you are already stepping up to the plate for the Kearny pool. Let’s pick up a few wins.

After a sound victory versus 10th-seeded Superior last Friday and a come-from-behind 5 – 4 win against third-seed Pusch Ridge Christian Academy, the second-seeded Ray baseball team will play for the Division IV State Championship on Saturday, May 16, at the Maryvale Baseball Stadium. The Cats will face top-seeded Desert

Christian at 7 p.m. Jordan Pace hit a two-out walkoff double to drive in the winning run, capping off a two-run seventh inning to lead the Bearcats to Saturday’s championship game. After trailing 4 – 1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Cats scored two runs to pull within one, setting up Pace’s heroics in the seventh. Senior Seth Harmon tied the game with an RBI sacrifice fly before Pace hit the game winner.

The Cats pounded out 10 hits against the Lions, including two each by Pace and Robbin Newman. Pace also had three RBI. Pace was also the starting pitcher, going four-and-a-third and allowing two earned runs on seven hits. He struck out two and walked one. Senior Destry Yocum came on in relief and allowed only one run, giving his team a chance to come back. They did and now they’ll face No. 1 Desert Christian, a team they lost to on April 14,

8 – 0. Cats’ head coach announced there will be send-off for his team at the school at noon on Saturday. All fans are encouraged to come out and show that Bearcat spirit! A booster bus will be provided to go to the State Championship game on Saturday, May 16, at the Maryvale Baseball Stadium, 3600 N. 31st Ave. in Phoenix. Entrance fee at the stadium is $10 adults and $6 students. DON’T FORGET TO WEAR YOUR MAROON!

For much of the season, the Ray softball team sat at the top of the Division IV rankings from week to week. But as the regular season started to come to a close, there appeared to be a chink in their armor – defense. That “chink” proved to be too much to overcome in a 5 – 4 loss to eventual state champion Superior in last

Friday’s quarterfinal game. The Lady Cats committed six errors against the Panthers and trailed 5 – 1 heading into their last at-bat in the seventh inning. Ray scored three runs in their half of the seventh, two of them coming an RBI hit by freshman Ema Alvarado. Junior Savannah Willis drove in another. The Lady Cats had an opportunity to tie or perhaps win the game with tying and

winning runs on base before the final out was made. Ray head coach Rikki Galka knew her team couldn’t afford to continue the display of shoddy defense if it was to win the state championship. Still, she remained positive after the loss. “We played as a team,” she told the Copper Basin News. “We just came up short.” Junior starting pitcher Stormee Galka

allowed two earned runs on only three hits in the complete-game outing. She struck out five and walked one. She also tried to help herself at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Galka and Willis, two juniors, return next season and could be among the top players in the state. Add to that the experience a number of freshman received this season and the Lady Cats figure to be right back in the state title hunt a year from now.

Lady Cats’ rally falls short; season ends

RAY ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

By Andrew LuberdaCopper Basin News

Talk about a tough draw. The eighth-seeded Hayden softball team, which had earned a first-round bye, defeated ninth-seeded Mohave Accelerated in lopsided fashion in the second round, 13 – 3.

For their reward, the Lobos had to face the playoffs top-seeded team, Veritas Prep and perhaps the state’s best pitcher, Lainey Stephenson. Stephenson looked every bit the best pitcher, allowing only two hits and striking out 16 Lady Lobos’ hitters in the complete-game 4 – 0 shutout loss. Hayden finished its season with a record of 13 – 11.

Lady Lobos’ season ends with loss to state’s top team

First grade teachers at Ray Elementary have been hatching chicks in their classrooms for over 20 years now. This spring, both first grade teachers, Mrs. Corder and Ms. Prinz, set out to carry on the same tradition as many years before. Each classroom incubates 18 fertilized eggs provided by a community member. This year only seven eggs of 36 hatched, but the students were just as excited. After the eggs sat in the incubator for 21 days, the students saw their first egg hatch on April 13, 2015. The hatching continued until April 15, 2015. After each chick hatched, they were moved to the nursery, which is an area where the chicks can stay warm. After the chicks were a few days old, each student had the opportunity to feed the chicks. After a full week in the classroom, the chicks went to their new home with the Day family. It is quite possible these chicks will be the same ones that provide the first grade classrooms with fertilized eggs next year!
