The major concept behind ‘Connections’ and the car park’s design is its role as a business and public-trans-port HUB. The idea can be seen as a derivative from the Manifesto concept explored in our studio ac-tivities; that the city should ‘abolish the car.’ From this I began looking at ways to reduce the amount of cars and subsequent pollution in Hong Kong. I saw an op-portunity to not only make my tower a car park but a place for people to ‘hire’ or rent electric vehicles for their time in Hong Kong. The second concept that surrounds this theme is its role as a Business Centre. As Hong Kong is one of the Business capitals of the world, it deemed appropri-ate for a business centre to be incorporated into a functional transport HUB and Car Park.

For this project we were required to design or re-design a Surf Life Saving Club on an existing site along the east coast of Queensland. Once we were assigned a location it was our responsibility to arrange meetings with the Club President, em-ployees, customers and local residents to develop ideas and strategies to overcome the problems with the existing Surf Club. Inventories were calculated, and the requirements were manifested from these meetings. I chose to explain my design through four major subhead-ings: Fabric, Form, Function and Façade. My proposal serves to provide the residents of peregian, tourists and all members of the public with an architecture that embodies the culture of the sunshine coast through enhancing views and vistas, promoting public interaction and stimulating revenue within local area.

The brief was to extend and remodel the existing 1930’s house at both ground and first floor. Since the original house was completed, sev-eral additional extensions and renovations had been made, making the house lay-out unconventional and the external appearance confus-ing and disconnected. I was given the task of reconfigur-ing the layout to incorporate a large, light filled space on the ground floor accommo-dating an open plan kitchen, dining and seating area. The principal idea was to reconcile the different el-ements of the house so there was a clear logic and hierarchy to the elevation. I worked on the project from concept design right through to the working drawing stage.

The brief was to develop the design for a two storey detached dwell-ing in the grounds of Manor Court, a Grade II listed building in the village of South Warnborough, Hampshire. The new dwelling was to build a successful relationship with the listed building, utilising mate-rials and forms that are reflective of the scale and proportion of the site. The sensitive siting of the design together with an exemplary architectural design response seeks to enhance the character of the area. Working closely with the project architect, I helped with the initial designing right through to the planning application drawings.

Page 14: james connor - architecture portfolio

The primary objective when positioning the new dwelling was to respect the views to and from Manor Court. The aim was therefore to make the building as low lying as possible with the two sto-rey element positioned away from the listed building.

The concept for the build-ing form was born out of the constraints and opportuni-ties of the site and is con-ceived as an extension of the grounds of the listed build-ing. It is envisaged that the building is designed around a central walled garden to create a unique and tranquil space that is subservient and complimentary to the setting of Manor Court.

The design will use high qual-ity natural materials through-out that will weather well to enhance and harmonise with the site. Timber cladding is proposed for the internal courtyard elevations. This will be designed to match the colour tone and proportion of Manor Court, creating a dia-logue between new and old.

SCALE + POSITIONING BUILDING AS LANDSCAPE

A biodiverse wild flower grass roof to the ground floor ac-commodation forms an ex-tension of the landscape and breaks down the mass of the building. The green roofs will create a living habitat for birds and wildlife.

This proposal was for a front extension to the existing ‘Burrard Cottage’ located on Undershore Road, Ly-mington, UK. The design proposes a single storey extension to the front of the house that re-orientates the ground floor accommo-dation to give focus to the stunning views of Lyming-ton River. The extension creates a large open plan kitchen and dining space and a south facing river terrace for en-tertaining family and friends.

Working heavily with the planning commitee the Se-nior architect and I designed a finely detailed extension that compliments the sim-ple proportions of the exist-ing and allows the house to be seen as the primary ele-ment of the composition.

The brief was to extend and remodel the exist-ing seaside house at both ground and first floor. I was to reconfigure the layout and create a large, light filled space on the first floor accommodating a open plan kitchen, dining and living area. A num-ber of different configurations and design options were explored over a number of weeks. The plans shown below explain the changes to the existing floor plans. The visual shown bottom left depicts one of the options for the exterior. The justaposition of light and heavy are explored here; a lightweight timber screen sits atop the solid render base that houses the two new ground floor bedrooms. obarchitecture extension and remodelling 9 waters edge-

The client came to us with the desire to extend and re-configure their existing dwelling in a contemporary style to accommodate and suit their growing family’s needs. After meetings with the client, the senior Architect and I proposed to remodel the existing front extension and cre-ate a rear two storey extension. In doing this, we were to relocate existing kitchen to unlock space at the centre of the house, reconfigure entrance hall and staircase, create a kitchen dining space suitable for modern living & family interaction and to create an additional bedroom with en-suite at first floor.

09PROFESSIONAL WORK.EXTENSION.061 BRECKNESS COURT.

The client came to us with the intention of remod-elling the interior and integrating a large extension to his 18th Century barnhouse. It was my task to design a large front extention that remained sub-servient to the existing building but also provided the client with a large open plan kitchen, living, din-ing space with views over the Welsh countryside. The plan shown right explains the full extent of the work, dotted line revealing the outline of the exist-ing building. The client began construction on this project a few weeks before I left OBA.

The client came to us after seeing our visuals posted on the website. They were in the process of extend-ing and remodeling their house and wanted us to design the interior spaces, providing them with draw-ings and visuals of the pro-posed schemes. It was my role to commu-nicate with the client and design all of the spaces they required. Over a three-month period I designed and issued vi-suals for the: Kitchen lay-outs, Courtyard, children’s play room, living space, walk-in-wardrobe and rear garden. Here are some examples of the visuals.

The brief for this project was not as conventional as most of the projects I worked on at OB Architecture. Repositioning their existing garage, the clients wanted to see if it would be possible to subdivide their current plot and subsequently build a narrow dwelling adjacent to their present residence. Beginning as a spatial study, I surveyed the area and spoke with the clients to find out their intentions for the site. If possible, they planned to develop the house and sell it off – their first venture as developers. Once we had worked out their requirements it was up to me to configure the layouts and propose some design options. The project recieved planning permission Jan 2014.

12OTHER WORK.DRAWINGS.TRAVEL SKETCHES.

Drawing allows me to bet-ter absorb a moment and retain the memories of a place.

Travelling through Europe I found sketching was the perfect way to remember a building in more detail and a great way to escape a busy street scene.

Here are a few of the draw-ings I did around Europe...

13OTHER WORK.PHOTOGRAPHY.TRAVEL & LIFE.

After completing a se-mester of Photography at Griffith QCA, I became fas-cinated with photography, film and the ability to cap-ture a moment in time. Travelling throughout Eu-rope, as most people do, I took thousands of photo-graphs, documenting my experiences and encoun-ters with people and archi-tecture. The photograph shown right depicts the front el-evation of the Villa Savoye in Poissy, France. Mid Win-ter and pouring with rain I arrived here after hours of walking, a bus and a train. Almost shocked to see someone, the care-taker unlocked the doors for me and I explored the desolate building alone. The following pages show some of the photographs I have taken on my travels...
