• Initiated and operated by volunteer medical students at the UUSOM.

• Addresses the issue of low numbers of health care providers in rural Utah through the promotion of health care educational programs to rural high school students.

How does it work?

• Volunteer medical students travel to rural high schools and give presentations to educate high school students and teachers about careers in health care and the need for different health professions in rural communities.

• Provide hands-on dissection of a cow heart or eyes, allowing students to interact, ask questions and learn from current medical students.

Utah AHEC’s mission is to improve access to health care through education. Its programs are developed under three main focal areas:

Recruit youth from Utah’s minority and disadvantaged populations into health-related careers.

Provide educational opportunities for students in health professions training programs in community-based clinical settings largely serving Utah’s medically underserved residents.

Retain health professionals practicing in Utah’s medically underserved communities through convenient professional development opportunities and health-related community advocacy and leadership

“One student, after a past trip, became interested in cardiology and iscurrently working towards that goal. He is currently in undergraduate pre-med studies.”

History of UROP

• 2002 Started by U of U medical students. Ran strong for about 10 years.

• 2010-11 ran into financial trouble, decreased support by the Dean’s office, lack of student involvement. Program almost ended.

• 2012-13 was the most successful year, in the sense of participation and number of trips.

• 2015-16 increased regulations on student volunteer hours has again caused decrease in student involvement.
