ALMA HUNT STATE MISSIONS OFFERING/WEEK OF PRAYERSeptember 13 – 20, 2020

Since 1976, the annual Virginia Missions Offering—traditionally called the Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions—is a joint venture of the Woman’s Missionary Union of Virginia (WMUV) and the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV).

We invite you to  give to the Alma Hunt Offering —joining your gifts with those of many other Virginia Baptists as we work to share the love of Christ across the Commonwealth of Virginia and with the whole world.

For the rest of 2020 and looking toward 2021, the allocations are being redirected in a way that will allow the focus to be on human needs arising from the COVID-19 crisis. It will be distributed as follows:

70% of funds to WMUV-directed projects 30% of funds to BGAV-directed projects All projects have a direct correlation to COVID-19 relief efforts Funds will be distributed monthly and will begin in Summer 2020 in order to respond more quickly to immediate needs.

Because of the time-sensitive nature of many of these critical needs and the plan to distribute funds monthly, we are being asked to consider sending offerings as early as possible this year.

JRBA recently sent information to the WMU Directors on the availability of Alma Hunt funds for ministry projects that are aimed at needs arising from the COVID-19 crisis. If your church applies for a grant and is completing a project, please be sure to report it to JRBA. Printed materials were not sent out this year and the information sent about calling WMUV for envelopes and flyers was incorrect. They are suggesting that you make your own envelopes and download the flyer from www.almahunt.org. (Look under Resources for the flyer and for stories about how funds are being used in COVID-19 relief.)

November 2 World Day of PrayerThe first Monday of every November is the Baptist Women's World Day of Prayer. The Day of Prayer program is translated into well over 80 languages so thousands, upon thousands, upon thousands of Baptist women gather to pray for each other on that special day. It is called DAY of Prayer because literally as the world turns, women are praying from the eastern hemisphere all the way around to the west. We are linking arms, standing in solidarity with each other on that special day. The theme is Life! Standing together, unified amidst our beautiful diversity!

HOPE FOR APPALACHIA The Fall 2020 Distribution Trip is tentatively scheduled for

November 4 – 7. If you are interested in going, please contact Rev.

Woody Moore at [email protected] or by phone at 804-

382- 7954 as soon as possible.

Your items are due by October 21, 2020. Rev. He is hopeful that we can still get what we need prepared on short notice. He will get back to us with more information as soon as he can coordinate.

Looking ahead to the Spring 2021 Hope for Appalachia Box Drive, please note that Laura Higgins says there are 195 boxes left over from last spring. Mulberry Grove has begun a program for its children during this season of at-home learning. Because of the schoolsrelying on online resources and the reality that some do not have Internet available, Mulberry Grove has invited itsmembers to use the fellowship hall as a space for parents to teach their children. So far it’s been very encouraging to seeparents love on and teach their children in the church. Lunch, snacks and devotions are provided for those who attend. If you have any questions about how your church could safely provide your resources for your own children, please emailRev. Michael Khol at [email protected]. He would be happy to walk you through what has (and has not) worked.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION>>> Information was recently sent out to the Deacon Chairs and Church Treasurers about an opportunity to “Bless

Your Pastor”. The information was sent to us by Rev. Skip Wallace, our BGAV Field Strategist. He felt it would be a great way to show our pastors our appreciation for all they are doing during this stressful time to meet the needs of our congregations. IF churches distribute the “50 Ways to Bless Your Pastor” flyer (sent with the information) to the congregation AND receive an offering for him, the church can apply for a FREE $250 Amazon gift card which will be sent directly to the pastor. There is no time limit on this offer which comes from the National Association of Evangelicals. The form to receive the gift card can be found online at https://blessyourpastor.org/bless-your-pastor-reporting-form/.

CHRISTIAN BOOKSTORE: Since the closing of LifeWay stores, it is hard to find a retail place to obtain Christian materials. Please note that the Mardel Christian & Education Store has recently opened in Lynchburg. It is located at 2307 Wards Road, next to Hobby Lobby (the old K-Mart building). It is spacious and has Christian-themed gifts, books, attire, cards, etc. It also has a very large selection of Teacher supplies, board games and toys (including Melissa & Doug items). If you go to the website, https://www.mardel.com, you can print out a coupon for 30% off one regular price item.

FROM YOUR MODERATOR>>>

I have been asking myself these day, “What’s normal?” I guess, like most people, I want to be comfortable and not have to wear a mask everywhere I go. I want to go to church and other events without worrying about distancing. I want children to go to school and be able to play with their friends. I want teachers to be able to teach. Through all of these ways we have had to adjust, I can see God at work, and there’s an urgency for us to share the Gospel with everyone. We don’t want anyone to be left behind. We may feel

that we cannot talk to people, but God will make a way! In Philippians 4:6-7, we are reminded, “Don’t be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
