Room 5 Writing
Maths - Room G6In Room G6 we have been doing lots of activities to help us learn about money, making simple transactions and calculating change. We have also been focusing on ‘learning intentions’ to make sure that we know what we are doing and what the purpose of our learning is. Recently we undertook a big money project. Firstly we practised adding amounts of money as well as working to a budget. We then focused on how to calculate change in order to see how much money we have left to spend. Then came project day! Each student was given $200 to spend at the Royal Adelaide Show. We had to plan our day at the Show, budget our money and show our working out. We all enjoyed picking what rides we would go on and what food and show bags we would buy!

Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world with 2 out of 3 Australians developing skin cancer at some time in their life. Skin damage, including skin cancer, is the result of cumulative exposure to the sun’s ultra violet radiation (UVR). Much of the damage occurs during childhood and adolescence. It is estimated that 80% of these concerns are preventable by the development of safe practices and limited exposure to ultra violet rays. As children are at school during the high ultra violet risk period each day for 5 days each week, the school has the potential to significantly reduce the level of sun exposure sustained by children. Taking appropriate precautions can significantly reduce the risk of skin cancers. To develop positive attitudes towards skin protection To educate the school community in “sun-safe” practices To implement an in school programme of “sun-safe” practices

IMPLEMENTATION Education Program As part of the School Health Program the curriculum will include material on the relationships between sun exposure and skin cancer and available methods of reducing this risk.
Outdoor Activities Outdoor activities, such as Physical Education lessons, will whenever possible, be scheduled in the early part of the school day, or will be held in shaded areas. After school students will be encouraged to wait in shaded areas until they have been collected from school. Hats It is a requirement that all students will wear a hat during play and at other times as directed by the teacher. The wearing of hats is enforced for Terms 1 and 4. Students who do not have their hats with them during nominated play times will stay in an area protected from the sun, and a “no hat, no play” policy will exist. Hats must be broad-brimmed or bucket, in school colours. These will be available for sale from the front office.
Sunscreen When students are outside for periods of longer than a lesson they will be encouraged to apply suitable UV protection SPF30+ at least 15 minutes before any outside activity. All students will be required to supply their own sunscreen for use at school.
Sunglasses Students are allowed to wear sunglasses for outdoor activities. (Parents should check when purchasing these that they are approved by the Anti-Cancer Foundation).
Dress Code Students are expected to wear school uniform as outlined in the Family Information Booklet. Clothing such as collarless t-shirts, tank tops and halter neck dresses are not acceptable school wear due to increased skin exposure. Footwear must be suitable for PE activities.
Hot Weather Policy On days when the temperature is 35°C or higher at recess or lunchtime, students will remain in classrooms, the resource centre, gymnasium or computer room during lunchtime play.
Staff School staff will act as role models by: Practicing sun-safe procedures Wearing protective hats and appropriate clothing for all outdoor activities Using sun-screen protection Seeking shaded areas when possible.
Parents All parents will be made aware of the policy and the reasons for its implementation. On enrolling a student, new parents will: Be informed of the school’s sun protection policy Be encouraged to provide a suitable SPF 30+ sunscreen for their child’s use Be encouraged to practice skin protection behaviour themselves.
This policy is guided by DECD – Inclement Weather Procedure 2015
