GILA RIVER CASINOS NAMES NEW CEOOn Tuesday January 4, 2011, Gila River Casinos announced that

its Board of Directors has named John James as the company’s Chief Executive Officer.

“In our search for a new leader, we focused our efforts on finding a seasoned casino executive to continue the prosperity that Gila River Casinos has enjoyed, and to lead us into the future as we continue to develop our expansion plans,” said Kenneth Manuel, President of the Board of Directors.

“John came to our attention because of his strong execution skills, his proven ability to lead top performing teams and his track record in driving revenues and profitability. He demonstrated these skills

by positively turning around many of the organizations he has worked for. As we got to know John, we were impressed by his emphasis on developing internal talent, his understanding of the role of Gila River Indian Community’s culture in the company’s success and his personal integrity,” continued Mr. Manuel.

A University of Nevada graduate, Mr. James brings more than twenty years of senior level leadership experience in the gaming industry to Gila River Casinos, having worked in several senior executive roles throughout the country.

Most recently, Mr. James was the managing partner and Chief Operating Officer for Panther Partners, LLC, a casino development company. Prior to that, James was the Chief Operating Officer for Seminole Gaming, Inc. where he led the tribe’s seven casinos including two world-renowned Hard Rock Casinos.

“Gila River Casinos is a powerful brand in the Valley with a great collection of three well known and highly patronized casinos,” said James. “The enterprise has accomplished a great deal through the efforts of their enormously talented team members in its relatively short history, and I look forward to working together to take Gila River Casinos to the next level. There is an extraordinary opportunity to create value for our guests and the Gila River Indian Community. I will seize these opportunities as I fulfill my new role”.

GILA RIVER APPOINTS NEW MARKETING MANAGER

Gila River Casinos has announced the appointment of Joel Rovics as Corporate Director of Marketing.

In his role, Mr. Rovics is respon-sible for the suc-cessful marketing strategies of the three Gila River Casino properties, brand management, and mar-keting communications throughout the Country.

“With his impressive track record, Joel brings a tremendous depth and breadth of marketing capability to Gila River Casinos, “ stated George Benatz, acting Chief Executive Officer. “His experi-ence in cultivating marketing programs for other world class casinos will be an asset as we build our brand in Arizona and nationwide.”

In past years, the largest number of dog teams has been somewhere between 13 and 23, and last year was the first year they included six-dog teams.

Sunrise grooms a spectacular trail every year. Mushers say it is one of the best trails they have ever raced. It’s considered a tech-nical trail, because it winds through the woods and takes some skill to keep up speed and yet maneuver past corners, over hills and around trees. After adding 9,000’ elevation to the mix — you have quite a challenge.

For those who love dogs, this is the sport! These exciting races start at 9am and finish at about noon on Saturday, Jan. 29 and Sunday, Jan. 30, at Sunrise Ski Park.

After Saturday’s race, Hon-Dah Casino hosts a “Winter Festival” at its Festival Grounds at 2pm. This year, there will be Chili, Corn Bread and Salsa Cook-Off Competitions, with People’s Choice Awards. Visitors can taste the goods and make a meal of it.

Every year, the Winter Games roll in during an abundance of snow, which is perfect for the snow-dependent festivities that

draw visitors and mushers from around the world. This will be the event’s ninth year, and it is still going strong.

COVER STORY

Hon-Dah Resort Casino - For the Love of Dogs

Then on Sunday, several mushers will choose one of their dogs and invite kids to take a ride down the starting shoot on a sled!

Also, to raise money for the White Mountains’ Humane Society, there will be a Northern Pure-breed Dog Show, a “Mountain Mutt” Dog show and a Dog Weight Pull competition.

For those who’ve never witnessed ice carving, this event draws a crowd like none other. There is also live enter-tainment, this year by Nashville’s own “Samantha Madison and Wild Card.”

More than 500 people packed the grounds last year, and stayed until the end. The last event was the Dog Weight Pull competition, and folks cheered for the canine contestants. The winner pulled 1,100 pounds.

Visitors can plan to be a part of the fun this year for the 9th Annual White Mountain Winter Games, Jan. 29-30, hosted by Sunrise Ski Park and Hon-Dah Resort Casino. For more information, call 928-369-7574 or 928-369-7573.

GAMING NEWSHARRAH’S NEW BUFFET HAS OPENED

A highly anticipated event recently occurred – After months of remodeling Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort re-opened “The Buffet.” The new 8,000-square-foot buffet features live action food stations where guests can get a wide array of culi-nary delights, made fresh to order. Diners will find many new menu options such as sautéed pasta, grilled steaks, rotisserie chicken, wok items along with hand omelets made to order at Sunday brunch.

Those with a sweet tooth will be delighted at all the new dessert options including hand-served gelato.

Under the guidance of Sous Chef Mark Alcala, “The Buffet” features

additional items made fresh daily and hundreds of recipes will be rotated by section weekly. “It was our desire with the remodel of The Buffet to add more variety, more choices for our diners,” said Sous Chef Alcala. “Everything from steak and chicken to fresh seafood and a large selection of breakfast items for Sunday brunch will offer some-thing for everyone’s palette.”

“The Buffet” will continue to offer its very popular unlimited seafood buffet every Friday and Saturday evening, featuring fresh seafood options such as snow crab legs and peel-and-eat shrimp.

The Buffet serves lunch and dinner Monday - Saturday. Mon – Thurs, 11am to 3pm and 4-8pm, Fri & Sat, 11am-3pm and 4-10pm - On Sunday - brunch is from 9am-3pm and dinner, 4pm-8pm.

Buffet prices include a non-alcoholic bever-age. Discounts for Total Rewards members are as follows: Seven Stars mem-bers: Two Free Buffets per day, Diamond mem-bers: $9 off, Platinum members: $6 off And Gold members: $3 off the posted price.

If you’re new to Harrah’s - sign up for the Total Rewards program (it’s free) and you will receive $15 in “Free Slot Play” and a voucher for a complimentary meal at The Buffet!

“We are incredibly excited for the re-opening of The Buffet,” said Angie Groeneveld, director of hotel, food and beverage for Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort. “Guests and locals alike have always loved our buffet, but the remodel will allow us to further diversify the menu while still offering quality dishes to diners.”

Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort is located near Phoenix in Maricopa, Arizona. The 40,000-square-foot casino has everything you need for a thrilling gaming experience. A hotel tower, currently under construction, will open this summer and will double the number of available guest rooms on property. For more information, please visit www.harrahsakchin.com.

ONE LUCKY NIGHTA young couple attended a Phoenix Sun’s bas-

ketball game on a Friday night in early November - Then went out to a restaurant for dinner and to celebrate the Sun’s win. While at the restaurant, a few of the Sun’s players also came in to celebrate their win, and the couple had the chance to meet and chat with them. The young woman told her escort that since it had been such a lucky night with the Sun’s win and the players ending up at the restaurant they were at, they should buy a Lottery ticket. She had never played the lottery in her life and, due to a tight budget; he hadn’t played in some time.

The next morning they selected their own numbers for two lines and a Quick Pick for the third line. The ticket was purchased on at Danny’s

The moment the winner realized that she had a winning ticket, she double and triple-checked it just a few more times - (Most winners find it dif-ficult to believe they’ve won.)

She then took the ticket to the store to have the clerk validate it. Once it had been confirmed that

Then they went down to the neighborhood gas sta-tion to have their ticket scanned at the store. They hadn’t made a mistake, as one of the lines with their own selected numbers was the winner worth $200,000. They were both giddy with excitement.

This lucky couple could hardly wait until Tuesday morning when they were finally able to come down to the Lottery office to redeem their ticket. They just told immediate family and a couple of close friends. Both of them are in graduate school and their win will go a long way in paying off their student loans.

she really did have a $50,000 winning ticket, she told a couple of her co-workers and her mom, since she had to share the excitement with someone. Since the ticket was purchased on the weekend, she had to anxiously wait until the Arizona Lottery office was open on Monday.

So now, whenever she has a little extra money, this recent winner purchases Scratchers, but she also will purchase Quick Picks for “The Pick” and “Powerball” and “The Pick” on a pretty regular basis. She has been a dedicated employee of the state of Arizona for over 20 years and this win comes at a good time. She plans to pay off bills, get a new TV, and will save the rest.

A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

Caring Enough to Play Smart

Linda Boyd , a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern Gaming” and “Midwest Gaming and Travel” - Her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and her free strategy cards for the most popular games. oker players are absolutely right when they say if you’re lucky you’ll win, but if it’s not your day a rookie could beat any top-notch player. That’s why the World Series of Poker (WSOP) is so exciting to watch.

On any given day an unknown player could win the Main Event instead of one of poker’s greats.

Take the most recent Main Event on November 8, 2010, where unknown 22 year old Jonathan Duhamel took home first prize of $8,944,310. Does it mean he’s better than the likes of Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, John Juanda, Gus Hansen, Dan Harrington, Men “The Master” Nguyen, Phil Hellmuth and a long list of other famous names? Not at all - However, Duhamel did both know and care about the game in addition to be sitting on top of a horse shoe at the right time.

Same thing is true for video poker players, espe-cially those that are casino regulars. Just like with the big name poker stars, video poker players can be on either end of the bell-shaped curve in the short run. Over time, however, those that play the odds will do significantly better than those who don’t.

Those Who KnoW: I often hear people say things like, “My friend is

good in math so he knows which cards to hold”. There are around 2,500,000 possible combinations given a deck of 52 cards—more with wild cards. Some of the plays are very close statistically and, therefore, coun-terintuitive. For example, in a game of 9/6 Jacks or Better (9/6 JOB) if you’re dealt off-suit ace, king, jack, any five, any six, most would hold ace, king, jack and that’s incorrect. The computer perfect hold is just the king and jack due to the slightly reduced chances of backing into a straight. (Check it out on WinPoker or any other computer-perfect tutorial software if you have any doubts.)

The people who know are those who have practiced on tutorial software and the experts who write the computer programs, video poker strategy cards and books. Self-proclaimed “experts” who may have worked in a casino or played a lot of video poker are unable to give correct advice because they are just guessing or copying information from others or the internet. Whether or not their advice is reliable is simply a crap shoot.

thoSE Who CarE: I’m referring to smart players who know

if you want to do well on a game involving mental ability gives an advantage to those who study and practice. The same is true of any form of gambling that has a skill component. Going back to the poker example used earlier, even geniuses like Ivey and Hellmuth take the time to learn the odds on dealt/flopped cards (there are many possibilities) and read the latest books on the topic. That’s true of blackjack, craps and of course, video poker as well. If you don’t really care about holding the cards that offer

the best long term odds then you might just as well play slots. There’s nothing wrong with non-skill games (stay tuned for American Idol) since many have such creative bonus rounds that they’re fun to play. It’s just that if you claim that you like video poker better than games like keno because you have an impact on the outcome then you should learn the key plays of the game. I’m referring to holds for frequent hands like one or two pair.

One other thing is that you may think that your lack of playing skills has no effect on others, but you’re mistaken. When people don’t care enough to check the pay schedules, then the casino is much more apt to downgrade pay tables. For example, they may change a 9/6 JOB table to an 8/5 or worse yet to a 7/5. (Note that the numbers refer to the return for a full-house and

flush respectively. 9/6 JOB returns 9 for each coin bet for a full-house and 6 for each coin bet for a flush.)

Final thoughtS: I love Frank Layden’s quote because it’s so funny; however, there’s some-

times truth to humorous statements. In this case, knowing and caring are key ingredients to playing your best at any given sport and also to having the most favorable odds for any game of chance with a skill component. After all, as my friend Ralph J. Bianco liked to say, “Lady Luck comes to visit, never to stay”!

“I asked him, ‘Son, what is it with you?Is it ignorance or apathy?’

He said, ‘Coach,I don’t know and

I don’t care.’”

He has competed against, and beaten, some of the top tournament players in the world. Avoid The Big Lossne key to show-ing a profit from blackjack

play month after month is to stay away from the big loss.

Part of playing winning Blackjack is to under-stand that losses are to be expected, and when they occur, accept them.

Emotions have no place in the game of Blackjack. If you lose, and get mad, you will start chasing lost money with more money, and when the dust has settled, you will have dug yourself a hole so deep that you can’t recover. You end up walking out of the casino talking to yourself.

How many times have you bought in for $40 and didn’t have to get back into your pocket the remainder of your playing session? That’s when it is easy and fun to play blackjack.

The downsides are times when $40 doesn’t last 10 minutes, and you’re back in your bankroll.

How a player reacts under these circumstances is what separates pro players from recreational players. When a losing situation arises, a profes-sional understands -- it’s not going to be their day -- and has the discipline to walk away with a small loss.

The recreational player will lose a $100, and then continue to play until all of the money is gone. If you lose $100, you will probably lose $500, that’s the way it usually goes. Rather than continue to play, have enough discipline to accept it’s not your day and walk away. It is a lot easier to come

back the next time and only have to make up $100, rather than to $500 or more.

A tool I recommend to help players stay dis-ciplined is to keep a log each and every time you play, and what you won or lost. Some players have no idea how much they lost, but this will help you be honest with yourself and keep losses to a minimum.

To help you understand the swings in blackjack consider this. If I take a coin and toss it in the air, there are two possible outcomes, heads or tails. Each time the coin is randomly flipped - there is a 50/50 chance of getting a head or a tail.

If I flip the coin 10 times in a row, you would expect to get five heads and five tails, but more than likely you will get 4 tails and 6 heads or some-where in between. It is possible that you might even get 10 heads or 10 tails in a row. In a short trial such as 10 flips, anything is possible, but in a trial of 1,000 flips, the results will be close to the expected 50/50 outcome.

When I sit down to play Blackjack, I have a small advantage over the casino, because I am a card counter, and although I know I will win in the long run, I know that in the short run anything can and will happen. Just like someone getting 10 heads in a row in the short run, the dealer’s first 10 hands may be six hands of 20 and 4 blackjacks.

Even though you would only expect the dealer to have a Blackjack once every 21 hands, in the short run, dealer results like this can and do happen. When a situation like this arises, I accept that it’s not my day and walk away with a small

loss. However, I know that in the long run, the percent-ages will be true to the expected outcome, and I will end up a winner. So the next time the dealer seems unbeatable, don’t get mad, just walk away and think of it as someone flipping a coin 10 times and getting 10 heads in a row. You know that it can happen, and on this day, the dealer was lucky.

But keep this in mind – You too will have your days of good fortune.

There are three types of Blackjack player: Players that make things happen, players that watch things happen and players who wonder what happened. Don’t get caught up in the moment and be a player that wondered what just happened.

Until next time, I hope you play winning Blackjack.

FROM A WOMAN’S POINT OF VIEW

by Marianne Minneci

New Year - Same

Pet PeeveSnother year is upon us. Time for new goals, new ideas and a new you. It’s just the same old song in a different year. For most of us, we are only half way through January and sadly some are falling back into

old habits.Being a new year, I thought it appropriate to bring up a subject near and

dear to my heart, poker etiquette. My #1 gripe from years

ago remains the same - Players who have to eat at the table.

These people really annoy me - especially during tournaments. The whole process of getting the menu, deciding what you want, ordering your food, paying for it and eating

really slows down the game. If you have to eat, PLEASE, make it something that isn’t messy. I cringe when I see someone eating finger foods like fries, onion rings or wings. Nothing turns me off than the vision of someone licking their fingers and then handling the cards. Believe me I have witnessed this on more than once and I have the image permanently embedded in my mind.

Let’s consider a new rule, if you must eat while playing, you must take a break from the action. Move your chair and table back, enjoy your sausage pizza or that dripping double cheeseburger - then wipe your hands (burp silently) and return to the game.

Pet Peeve #2 - People talking on cell phones. This has diminished a

bit because of card room rules, but there still are play-ers that must include everyone at the table in their conversation. If they are not talking - they are texting. Texting seems to be acceptable at the table. Why? You’re still on the phone. Any collusion that could be perpetrated by talking on the phone could be done while texting. Cell phones should totally be removed from sight. If you can’t break away from the world outside long enough to concentrate on the game - don’t play! You may think your life is more important than anyone else at the table – But it’s not.

My newest pet peeve is a malady I call “Rebuyitis”. This is defined as an individual that can’t spend their money fast enough while playing in a tourna-ment. Let me clarify this, re-buying in a tournament is a great way to keep in the game - However, when it becomes a tool for someone to cover up their bad play, it is no longer a tool but a hindrance. In a recent tournament I watched one individual re-buy after nearly every hand. All we heard was “All-In” followed by “Rebuy” for the first several rounds.

Come on, in most cases you would have to win the tournament just to get your money back. What’s the point? Besides reducing your personal bankroll it also ruins the game for others that have come to play with a more serious attitude about winning. Hopefully these folks have made a resolution this year to play more cautiously.

Finally, most players that I have the pleasure to play with are courteous and aware of other people at the table. Unfortunately there always seems to be one individual at the table however, that feels the world exists just for them. There’s usually nothing we can do about these loud obnoxious players (unless security feels they are a risk and removes them). We can only hope this person doesn’t end up at our table. Happy New Year to Everyone! I hope we all make a lot of money playing the game we love.

Don’t forget to hold March 19th open for the “Hold-Em For Hope” tournament benefiting Easter Seals Southwest Human Development. I will have additional details next month.

Until next time, “Have a Lucky Month”. Write me at [email protected].

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR

byDavid Ramsey

1. Never Let Me Go

Ruth, Kathy and Tommy spend their childhood at a charming seemingly perfect English boarding school. As they get older they have to deal with how they feel for each other so when Ruth and Tommy pair up

Kathy feels left out. When they leave the school they are not prepared for the predetermined reality that awaits them nor the moral dilemma it represents. The acting is superb and the writing is brilliant. Everything about this film is perfect, you will remember it for a long time.

2. KicK-Ass

A high school comic book fan decides to put on a costume and become super-hero. He quickly becomes an internet phenomenon inspiring an ex-cop and her daughter looking for revenge to don costumes and follow his lead. This

is not a kids’ movie – it is rated R, a very hard R for rough language and bloody violence. It does have its funny moments but the action is intense, the writing is witty and acting is very good.

3. shutter isLANd

In 1954, a US Marshall investigates the disappearance of a patient at an isolated mental hospital for the criminally insane and who is thought to be hiding on the isolated island.

The Top Ten Films oF 2010

Not all is as it seems for anyone. The writing is tense and acting is very good.

4. the Kids Are ALL riGht

A brother and sister who were conceived with the help of a sperm donor want to meet their real dad. They end up bringing him into their family life much to the consternation of one of their mothers, the other one is a little

more supportive. His constant presence puts unexpected pressure on the family and the most notably on the mothers’ relationship. The cast is brilliant and the family dynamic is realistic.

5. toy story 3

Andy is getting ready to go to college, his toys are preparing to say goodbye and wondering what is going to happen to them. Woody is sure they will stay together in the attic and always be Andy’s toys. Things don’t work out as planned and through a series of mishaps they end up donated to a day care center and in a garbage dump as Woody frantically tries to save them all. This is the perfect ending to a terrific series of films.

6. tANGLed

A princess is stolen as a baby by an old hag who needs the special powers of her hair to stay young. She grows up believing her “mother” has kept her in a tower to protect her. She has

never been outside or cut her hair. One day a charming thief stumbles upon her tower while being chased by the palace guards. The story is well written, funny and exciting. In typical Disney fashion there are a lot of great characters,

some good music and a lot of fun and action. Rapunzel is the best animated character since Belle, her screen presence rivals many ‘real’ actresses. Everything about this film is terrific. The entire family will love it.

7. 127 hours

Aron Ralston is hiking through Utah canyons by himself when he falls and his arm gets caught under a boulder. He is unable to

move the rock and is trapped with little water. He neglected to tell anyone where he was going and is far from any trails. He knows he will have to take drastic efforts to save his life but nothing works and he is running out of time. Based on the true story this is a compelling and harrowing story told expertly by a very good filmmaker with a great performance by James Franco.

8. the KiNG’s speech

The story of how King George IV overcame his stammer and lead Britain into and through World War

II. While it was embarrassing his stammering was never a real issue until his brother abdicated the throne and he became king, just as the country was going to war with Hitler’s Germany. His wife enlists an Australian speech therapist with unorthodox methods. At first the future King is not sure of the unusual exercises but then he sees results. This is a story of family, friends and overcoming adversity. The acting is terrific and the story is well told.

9. scott piLGriM vs. the WorLd

Scott is a normal guy with quirky friends who plays bass in a rock band. Then he falls for a girl he sees at a party but this is no ordinary girl. First she travels through his dream and then learns he has to defeat her

seven evil exes if he wants to date her. This is a truly unique film, it is a romantic comedy with touches of the supernatural, video games and the graphic novel it was based on. Everything about this film is fun from the cast to the special effects.

10. the sociAL NetWorK

In his Harvard dorm room a sophomore created a program that will end up making him the world’s youngest billionaire. He is arrogant and alienates his friends and partners as he falls under the influence of money and fame. The

story is told from the depositions taken for the lawsuits that further complicate his life. While it is based on a true story it may not be factual, but it is very good. The acting is very good and the writing gives you an insight into the players.

Denny worked for the Post Office, and his job was to process all the mail that had illegible addresses. One day, a letter came addressed in a shaky handwriting to “God” with no address. He opened it to see what it was about – It read;

Dear God,

I am an 83 year old widow, living on a very small pension.

Yesterday someone stole my purse. It had $100 in it, which was all the money I had until my next pension check.

This Sunday is Christmas, and I’ve invited two friends over for dinner. Without that money, I

A Touching Storyhave nothing to buy food with, have no family to turn to - you are my only hope.. Can you please help me?

Sincerely, Edna

Denny was so touched. He showed the letter to the other postal workers. They each dug into their pockets and came up with a few dollars. At the end of the day he collected $92, that he put into an envelope and sent to the woman – That day, all the workers felt a warm glow thinking of Edna and the dinner she would be able to share with her friends.

Christmas came and went, and a week later

another letter came from the same old lady to “God”.

All the workers gathered around while Denny opened the letter and read;

Dear God,

How can I ever thank you enough for what you did for me?

Because of your gift of love, I was able to fix a glori-ous Christmas dinner for my friends.

It was a nice day and I told my friends of your wonderful gift. By the way, there was $8 missing.

I think it might have been those @#^@$%* at the post office.

Sincerely, Edna
