Dear AFP Members,

Thank you for allowing me to serve as your AFP Memphis President this year.

I have enjoyed meeting and getting to know many of you. I could not have done it without the help and support of our outstanding Board of Direc-tors. Special thanks to Millie McPherson, our chapter admin-istrator, for making our meet-ings and conferences run so smoothly. We ended the year on a positive note financially as well as educational-ly with a very successful conference and Crystal Awards. Thank all of you for supporting AFP Memphis throughout the year by your participation in our events, on the board and by your encouraging words of support. 2012 will only be better! I look forward to seeing you at our next meet-ing on January 5 at CBU.

Happy New Year!

20 Questions with George Miller Each newsletter we like to get to know one of our members a little better through a series of 20 questions. This month, George Miller shares a few details on both a personal and professional level.

1. Full name (people know you as)? George C. Miller, Jr. 2. Date & place of birth? Clarksdale, Mississippi

3. How long have you lived in the area? For about 8 years 4. Occupation? Director of Development at Southern College of Optometry5. Who was your most influential role model? My dad and my maternal grandfather. Both taught me a great deal about how to treat others and the value of putting faith and family first in your life. 6. Favorite place to go, favorite trip, hike, etc.? Our family loves to vacation to Destin, Florida each summer. 7. Favorite local business? Wow. It’s difficult to pick just one. But, I love to play golf. So, my favorite local business is Cherokee Valley Golf Club in Olive Branch, MS.8. Favorite food? Like many Memphians, my favorite food is barbeque!9. Favorite book? The Bible10. Favorite movie? Anything with Morgan Freeman in it. I love that guy.11. What do you waste your money on? With all of the great places to eat in Memphis, we spend a lot of money dining out!12. What is the craziest & most adventurous thing you have done? When President Clinton visited my hometown of Clarksdale, MS in 1999, I was asked to drive a car in his motorcade. It was an honor to meet the President of the United States. 13. What is your fondest memory? Without a doubt, it’s the birth of my children. 14. If you could change one thing about Memphis what would it be? I’d love it if we could do something about the violent crime in our area. But, all cities deal with that. So, I think it’s time for our city to have an NBA Champion. Go Grizzlies!15. What do you think makes Memphis a good place to live? Without a doubt, it’s the people. Memphians are genuine and friendly. (Except in traffic on I-240!)16. Tell me about one hidden Memphis treasure others should know about? Well, it’s certainly not a hidden treasure, but I think all Memphians should go to a play at The Orpheum or take the family to the Memphis Zoo. Both are first class in every way.17. What do you do to de-stress? I spend a hour each day at the YMCA. 18. If you were to try any other profession for one day, what would it be? I doubt that I’d be very good at it, but I’d love to be a high school football coach for a day. 19. What is one fundraising best practice you can share with AFP membership? To remember that it’s all about rela- tionships and connecting people to causes that are important and matter to them. 20. Complete this sentence: George Miller is blessed to have a wife and three children who make life fun and exciting. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
