Annual Giving: strategies for building support

for your organization, large or small(Or What I Did On My Summer Vacation)

Marianne Minton

For most organizations, annual giving - the most traditional and oldest form of fundraising – is the bedrock for all other fundraising activities. This process of acquiring, renewing and upgrad-ing a donor base also involves the greatest number of donors and the widest variety of methods of contact and solicitation. Ms. Minton shares with us some of her thoughts on developing a solid annual giving strategy in your organization.

Marianne Minton is the Director of Annual Giving at the University of Memphis where she oversees the Phonathon, Direct Mail, Student Philanthropy, Young Alumni and online giving programs, as well as the Faculty/Staff, and Parent/Family campaigns. Her professional accom-plishments at the University include implementing a successful first-ever family campaign and second ask giving program; expanding the annual giving staff to three full-time employees; and raising the most annual funds in University history in Fiscal Year 2008.

20 Questions with Joel AshnerEach newsletter we like to get to know one of our members a little better through a series of 20 questions. This month, Joel Ashner shares a few details on both a personal and professional level.

1. Full name (people know you as)? Joel Ashner2. Date & place of birth? June 23, 1964 in New Orleans3. How long have you lived in the area? 16 years4. Occupation? Community Relations Director for Memphis Jewish Home and Rehabilitation Center5. Who was your most influential role model? My mom-she taught me to always put family first, but also to give back to my community and volunteer my time.6. Favorite place to go, favorite trip, hike, etc.? The beach or a cruise.7. Favorite local business? Bangkok Alley8. Favorite food? Any kind of seafood and chocolate, but not together, of course.9. Favorite book? Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and Who Moved My Cheese? They are so different that I couldn’t choose one!10. Favorite movie? The Shawshank Redemption - I’ve seen it so many times, I can say the lines before the actors.11. What do you waste your money on? Eating out, for sure. I love good restaurants!12. What is the craziest & most adventurous thing you have done? I climbed a 50 ft alpine tower at the summer camp my kids attend (and I used to attend). I’m a pretty cautious person, and I don’t like heights. My kids watched and coached me from the ground. I’m not sure I would have made it to the top without their encouragement.13. What is your fondest memory? From childhood, it would have to be summers at camp. It’s hard to pick one, but as an adult, I’d say my wedding day in 1987 and a cruise we took with the kids a few years ago.14. If you could change one thing about Memphis what would it be? Elected officials would act more like responsible adults.15. What do you think makes Memphis a good place to live? It’s small, but not too small.16. Tell me about one hidden Memphis treasure others should know about? Shara’s Paperie- Shara has helped design invitations for family events, and she does a great job.17. What do you do to de-stress? Jazzercise18. If you were to try any other profession for one day, what would it be? I’d love to be Stacy London on “What Not to Wear.”19. What is one fundraising best practice you can share with AFP membership? You should thank donors as quickly as possible after a gift is made, even if the gift is small. 20. Complete this sentence: Joel is so lucky to have a wonderful husband and 3 awesome teenagers!

The Seven Steps to StagnationErwin M. Soukup

1. We’ve never done it that way before.2. We’re not ready for that.

3. We are doing all right without trying that.
