20 Questions with Tona Simpson Each newsletter we like to get to know one of our members a little better through a series of 20 questions. This month, Tona Simpson shares a few details on both a personal and professional level.

1. Full name (people know you as)? Tona Jackson Simpson, just call me Tona, rhymes with Donna…2. Date & place of birth? May 25 in the Bluff City 3. How long have you lived in the area? I’ve lived here my whole life.

4. Occupation? Director of Foundation Relations for Ducks Unlimited5. Who was your most influential role model? Personally, it was my first “boyfriend’s” mom and dad, Sara and Jack; they taught me much about caring for others, living a Christian life and having a good marriage. Professionally, it was Frank Holmes, a former AVP of Alumni Affairs at The University of Memphis. He was one of the hardest task masters I have ever worked for but I respected his work ethic and persistence, and I learned much that I have been able to apply to the rest of my career.6. Favorite place to go, favorite trip, hike, etc.? Always the beach7. Favorite local business? More Than Words in Germantown8. Favorite food? Mexican and Italian9. Favorite book? Oh so many…recently read Room, Sarah’s Key and really enjoyed A Reliable Wife.10. Favorite movie? No real favs here but I enjoyed The Matrix and like a good action movie like Mission Impossible and Indiana Jones (am I dating myself??)11. What do you waste your money on? I love jewelry—Silpada, Premier, Target, you name it.12. What is the craziest & most adventurous thing you have done? I’m not very adventurous; I recently zip lined for the first time and that was a big deal for me because I am scared of heights (not to mention hanging by a thread)!13. What is your fondest memory? n/a 14. If you could change one thing about Memphis what would it be? Our schools. There has to be a way to ensure every child has the opportunity for a great education. I think we cannot put enough emphasis on great schools, and frankly I’m willing to pay more for that emphasis. I also think smaller is better. I am all for a consolidated system, but we need to break it down by “campuses” with some local autonomy.15. What do you think makes Memphis a good place to live? Memphis has something for everyone—great food, fabulous music, terrific nightlife and family-friendly attractions.16. Tell me about one hidden Memphis treasure others should know about? n/a 17. What do you do to de-stress? Shop and drink wine (not at the same time!!)18. If you were to try any other profession for one day, what would it be? I would like to be on the end that gives away the money vs. always asking for it! And I mean the BIG money, not the stuff I can afford!!19. What is one fundraising best practice you can share with AFP membership? Don’t procrastinate! Do the things you least like first so you can enjoy the rest of your day. 20. Complete this sentence: Tona Simpson is thankful for the opportunity to do what I love with people whose company I enjoy in a city that I cherish.
