Janapada Loka, Ramanagaram

Janapada Loka is the result of the single minded dedication of Sri H.L.Nage Gowda toprotect and promote folk art and culture of Karnataka. He was a retired bureaucrat and

folklorist. Janapada Loka was inaugurated on 12th March 1!.

Janapada Lokaor "#olk world" is an institution that is dedicated to preser$ing and propagating the rural

folk culture of %arnataka. &t is a part of the %arnataka Janapada 'arishat(1)and is situated in *amanagara

district on the +angalore,M-sore highwa-.

&t is set up on a 1,acre /01 m23 campus where rural milieus from %arnataka ha$e been recreated. &t

also houses a wide arra- of rural artifacts depicting the essence of folk literature music dance festi$als

sculpture and lifest-le. &t is the brainchild of the folklore enthusiast the late H. L. Nage Gowda.

Janapada Loka pro$ides an opportunit- for rural artisansmusicians and craftspeople to showcase theirart[2]and pro$ides a platform for marketing these works of art.

1 acres of land on the outskirts of *amanagara is con$erted into a museum completewith a $illage home and surroundings.Janapada Loka is a subsidiar- of the %arnataka Janapada 'arishath and the- conductclasses on folk music and dance. 4here are students who hone their skills on $ariousfolk arts here.

Loka Mahal

This is a spacious two storeyed building. In the ground

floor there are life size dolls dressed as Mudalapaya Yakshagana artists, coorgi couple, Dasayya and

Goravayya village characters, pied piper, !alakki vokaaligas" who perfor# dances of no#adic tribe

and harvest dances. The other rarities that find a place here are various ar#s and weapons, the

articles used in wedding cere#ony, weights and #easures of yester years, ritual ite#s used while

perfor#ing poo$a and lastly a few ite#s fro# the kitchen. The ground floor which is na#ed as

%oothada Gallery #eaning Ghosts gallery we find life size idols of ghosts #ade of wood and stone. The

first floor has a well collected e&hibition of various folk instru#ents. 'pecial dolls #ade for folk theater

"Togalu go#begalu or leather puppets, string puppets, rod puppets apparels of %adagu tittu and

TenkutYakshagana artists, Gan$eefa art pieces(playing cards), children*s playthings, 'o#a and !arige

and other #asks e&hibited here capture the interest of the visitors.

Lokamatha mandira:Here household articles like cooking $essels implements usedfor farming grain storage bins and so on. &t gi$es an insight into the wa- peopleinno$ated the different tools and utensils to cook different dishes. 4he $essel used tosteam food is $er- interesting.

Chitrakuteera: Chitra kuteera

Number of attractive black and white and colour pictures

e&hibited in +hitra kuteera bring alive the festivals,fairs, arts and custo#s of our karnataka before our

eyes. Many photographs taken while 'ri. agegoda was engaged in establishing $anapadaloka,while

recording folk #usic, video recording and collecting folk artifacts and personal articles, #anuscripts,

awards received by hi# are also e&hibited here. -hotographs of tribal people, #asks of Tenkutittu

Yakshagfana for#,and folk theatre attracts the attention of the visitors

Saraswathi Mandira

'araswathi #andira built on the bank of the

lokasarovara houses a well"euipped library on the ground floor with fecilities for in"house reading and

is open to the public on all working days.The first floor serves as class roo# for the students studying

in the certificate and diplo#a course of the parishath. It is also used for #eetings and se#inars.

/d$ascent to the as saraswathi #andira are two well"furnished roo#s useful for scholors to stay at a

no#inal rate.

Shilpamala

/ large collection of stones arranged in 'hilpa#ala are

not $ust ordinary stones of the present day but #e#orial stones dating back to a period #ore than

four hundred years These are all inscripted stones which were installed in honour brave people for

their achieve#ents. These are identified as 0eeragallu" in honour of a war hero, 'athikalllu" in honour

of a faithful wife and Gokallu" in honour of a beloved cow. %esides these there are #any idols ofworship which had been abandoned and lying in ruins in different parts of karnataka.These have been

collected and preserved and displayed here with serenity. %ehind the shilpa#ala is a te#ple of

Ganesha " built in a typical village style.The whole at#osphere #akes the visitors feel one with the

nature.

Open air theatre

/n i#pressive and big open air theatre built in Greek

style with a capacity to hold 1222 persons at a ti#e. The theatre co#es alive with progra##es of folk

artfor#s on every sunday.. /d$acent to it is a well euipped green roo#. The theatre has received

applause fro# none other than 3ate %.0 4arantha, the best director of theatre arts that India hasproduced.

Alasuru Chariot

/lasuru chariot was a part of 'o#eshwara Te#ple,

%angalore which is of significant historical i#portance. %ut the chariot was slightly da#aged due to a

fire accident and was considered inauspicious for pu$a. The chariot thus discarded is brought here in

its full for# and preserved after conservation and displayed for its beautiful and delicate carvings.

Dodda Mane

/ house having twelve pillars and a open central

court yard.. /round the central courtyards are roo#s and large halls which serve as dor#etaries for

visiting folk artists.It is also hired by public and organizations for conducting #arriages, se#inars,

workshops. /d$ascent to the #ain house is a co##unity kitchen to fecilitate large scale cooking.

earby is the toilet fecility for both #en and wo#en. 'chools, colleges and institutions can

co#fortably arrange short ter# or long ter# resident workshops, se#inars, su##er ca#ps, as it has

the necessary infrastructure.The house has a big hall and a beautifully #aintained lawn. It has the

facilities to acco##odate 5anapada artists. /d$acent to Dodda#ane is a kitchen, bath roo#s and

toilets. 'chools, colleges and institutions can co#fortably arrange short ter# or long ter# workshops,

ca#ps and se#inars here since Dodda#ane has all the necessary infrastructure.

JaanapadaMantapa and innari ! amsale

5anapada #antapa is a spacious hall with stage

which can be used for #ultipurposes, like lectures, se#inars, functions etc . /d$ascent to this are two

s#aller buildings facing each other which also can be used for functions. There is a open"air stage in

between these two buildings with a beautiful backdrop of green landscaping, ideal for folkperfro#ances and such cultural progra##es.
