Jane Evelyn Atwood• Paris-based American photographer.

• Born in New York and has been living in Paris since 1971 • Works with subjects over long periods of time.

• Intrigued by people and the idea of exclusion.

• Seen as a photographer who has managed to penetrate worlds that most don’t know or ignore.

• Chose to spend 18 months photographing a regiment of the Foreign Legion and followed the soldiers to Beirut and Chad.

• Photographed a four-and-a-half-month story on the first person with AIDS in France to allow himself to be photographed for publication in the press.

• Did a four-year study of landmine victims in Cambodia, Angola, Kosovo, Mozambique and Afghanistan.

• Also covered news events such as the Kobe earthquake of 1995, the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001, and the Democratic National Convention in 2004.
