Baptism of the LordGod Shows No Partiality. Saint Peter speaks the truth. God is impartial. For everyone who acts uprightly is acceptable. Everyone. Politics may be partisan at times, but Christians can never be. Indeed, Baptism makes us all alike – with differing gifts and charisms – but all in the image of Christ whose name we bear. God says to us as well:  “I am well pleased.”

• Because of Baptism, how will I cherish even those not like me?

• To whom will I say, because of this _______ I am well pleased?

Prayer Over the Water

Father, you give us grace through sacramental signs, which tell us of the wonders of your unseen power. In baptism we use your gift of water, which you have made a rich symbol of the grace you gave us in this sacrament.

At the dawn of creation your Spirit breathed on the waters, making them the wellspring of all holiness.

The waters of the great flood you made a sign of the waters of baptism that make an end to sin and a new beginning of goodness.

Through the waters of the Red Sea you led Israel out of slavery to be an image of God’s Holy people, set free from sin by baptism.

In the waters of the Jordan your Son was baptized by John and anointed by the Spirit

Your Son willed that water and blood should flow from his side as he hung upon the cross.

After His resurrection he told his disciples: “Go out and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

Father look now with love upon your church and unseal for it the fountain of baptism.

By the power of the Holy Spirit give to this water the grace of your Son, so that in the sacrament of baptism all those whom you have created in your likeness may be cleansed from sin and rise to a new birth of innocence by water and the Holy Spirit.

Fr. Kevin’s Cluttered Desk Today we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord which brings to an end the Christmas season. We move from the Incarnation of God to the ministry of God made Man as we listen to the words, “You are my Son the Beloved, with you I am well pleased.” By our baptism each of us should look forward to the day when we hear God say to us, “You are my child, the Beloved, with you I am well pleased.” There are times when we try to take the paternity of God from God. In His likeness God created them, male and female God created them and he created us for relationship, with each other and with God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God also gave us a mother, the very woman who said yes and brought into the world our salvation. Why did God give us this mother? Because we all need a mother and a father, we need parents, to love us and cherish us. Sadly, we have way too many people who don’t have a loving earthly mother and father but we will always have a heavenly mother and father, who love us unconditionally and desire very much for us to hear them say, “you are my beloved, with you I am well pleased.” For God is love and where there is love, there is God. And yet, love is about a choice, we all need to choose love, we all need to choose God, but at the end of the day, the choice is always up to the individual. Please God, each of us use the tools and abilities we have been given to make good choices.

Peace Fr. Kevin

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is celebrated around the world on January 18-25.

The 2021 theme – Abide in my love and you shall bear much fruit (John 15:5-9) – calls us to pray and to work for reconciliation and unity in the church, with our human family, and with all of creation. Drawing on the Gospel image of vine and branches, it invites us to nourish unity with God and with one another through contemplative silence, prayer, and common action. Grafted into Christ the vine as many diverse branches, may we bear rich fruit and create new ways of living, with respect for and communion with all of creation.
