It doesn’t require you to go through the difficult work of forming a relationship, maintaining it, and possibly having to forgive the other person when conflict is brought into the relationship. This weekend we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday, a pastor and person whose ultimate dream it was to see differences mended so that we might become stronger together. He said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” Hate and darkness cannot mend and heal this broken and violent world. I also know that only God will be able to bring about an everlasting peace here on earth, but we should be working to drive out the darkness and hate through showing others the same love that God has shown us. We will disagree from time to time on how best to do the work of the Lord, but we must always keep God at the center of this community. As long as we remember our central claim that Christ is Lord and Savior, we will always be able to put our differences aside, come together, and worship and serve the Lord. In Christ, A.J.

January 17, 2019

One of my favorite political couples is James Carville, who was the lead advisor

for Bill Clinton’s first Presidential campaign, and his wife Mary Matalin who served

under Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. In this age of political animosity and

constant bickering, when it’s so hard to get our elected officials to agree upon

anything these two prominent political strategists are able to put their political

differences aside and love one another in spite of their many ideological differences.

When you’re in relationship with others you have to give in to the other person

sometimes. You have to accept them for who they are, with all their little intricacies

and quirks. There are things that make you want to scream at times, but you love

them; it’s what makes them, them, just like all of your little quirks define you.

Therefore, you let those little differences go and build each other up in love.

Relationships are difficult to maintain, it requires picking up the phone

sometimes in the middle of a busy week just to tell a friend hello; it means allowing

people into your life and opening up to them, and a willingness to listen when they

open up to you. It is so much easier to hate, or dislike someone out of hand, than to

enter into a relationship with them. It doesn’t require you to go through the difficult

work of forming a relationship, maintaining it, and possibly having to forgive the

other person when conflict is brought into the relationship.

This weekend we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday, a pastor and

person whose ultimate dream it was to see differences mended so that we might

become stronger together. He said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light

can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” Hate and darkness

cannot mend and heal this broken and violent world. I also know that only God will

be able to bring about an everlasting peace here on earth, but we should be working to

drive out the darkness and hate through showing others the same love that God has

shown us. We will disagree from time to time on how best to do the work of the Lord,

but we must always keep God at the center of this community. As long as we

remember our central claim that Christ is Lord and Savior, we will always be able to

put our differences aside, come together, and worship and serve the Lord.

In Christ,

A.J.

Picking Cotton (book)

Tuesday February 19th at 12; Wednesday Feb 20th at 6 Jennifer Thompson was raped at knifepoint by a man who broke into her apartment while she slept. She was able to escape, and eventually positively identified Ronald Cotton as her attacker. Ronald insisted that she was mistaken-- but Jennifer's positive identification was the compelling evidence that put him behind bars. After eleven years, Ronald was allowed to take a DNA test that proved his innocence. He was released, after serving more than a decade in prison for a crime he never committed. Two years later, Jennifer and Ronald met face to face-- and forged an unlikely friendship that changed both of their lives. With Picking Cotton, Jennifer and Ronald tell in their own words the harrowing details of their tragedy, and challenge our ideas of memory and j udgment while demonstrating the profound nature of human grace and the healing power of forgiveness.

Our pantry shelves are empty because of the overwhelming need in

Tallahassee and for Hurricane Michael victims. We would like to encourage

those who can to take part in a BOGO (buy one, get one free) project to refill

our shelves. As you are shopping and taking advantage of BOGO DEALS,

consider donating some of your free ones. We don’t want to turn away those
