TUESDAY, JANUARY 17The Bart House Band. Fronted by twin brothers and fiddlers, this family collective performs Old World music from Iceland to Kazakhstan. The Bart family of Winnipeg grew up immersed in the sounds of Slavic kolomiykas, Celtic ballads, and Romani dance tunes. Watch for the Irish flute, bouzouki, bodhran, mandolin… and the hurdy gurdy!

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18 1:00 PM | At Gwen Secter Creative Living Centre, 1588 Main StreetBorn in Moscow, Sonia Shklarov spent her early childhood in Israel before moving to Calgary. In August 2016, she joined the first violin section of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. In this concert Sonia will perform a taste of popular and lesser-known Jewish and Classical selections.

THURSDAY JANUARY 19I’ll Give You the Sun, the Moon and the Stars. Helen White celebrates one of Winnipeg’s own finest stars, Ron Paley, in a concert with Ron and Helen performing piano duets with her all-star band. Including some of the best jazz songs ever written about our sky, such as: When the Sun Comes Out, (Harold Arlen), Fly Me to the Moon, (Bart Howard).

TUESDAY JANUARY 24Reality, Fiction, and History: Corruption in Latin America. Jorge Nállim is Associate Professor of History at the University of Manitoba, where he teaches Latin American and World history. His research has focused on modern Latin America and Argentina in the fields of cultural, intellectual, political, and social history.

THURSDAY JANUARY 26Love (Before and) After 1950. Mezzo soprano, Rosemarie van der Hooft with pianist, Madeline Hildebrand. From the parlour song to cabaret, wartime songs to French Melodie, Gershwin, and Rodgers & Hammerstein to 21st century appropriation of popular 1950’s song and dance, you will catch a glimpse or a fond remembrance of love in an era before on-line dating.

TUESDAY JANUARY 31Jazz singer Nadia Douglas infuses her quartet with the stylings of Etta James, Sarah Vaughan and more, to create upbeat jazz, swing and Latin. Old movie favourites such as Can’t Help Lovin Dat Man of Mine, My Heart Belongs to Daddy, and Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby combine with romantic American standards of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Louis Jordan.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 2The Meaning of Trump. Allen Mills is a professor of Political Science at the University of Winnipeg, and Chair of the Department from 2000 to 2005, and from 2014 to 2016. His special interests are Canadian politics and political philosophy in general. He has recently published a book about the political ideas of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Citizen Trudeau, 1944-1965, an Intellectual Biography.

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 7Vince Fontaine Band. Award winning songwriter and producer Vince Fontaine brings his unique blend of Indigenous fusion and sentiments to the Music ‘N’ Mavens stage. His quintet features members of multi award winning group Indian City, who recently performed for the Prime Minister in Ottawa for Canada Day.

WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 8 1:00 PM | At Gwen Secter Creative Living Centre, 1588 Main StreetThree accomplished singers and their pianists from Canadian Mennonite University will showcase their work in preparation for the prestigious Verna Mae Janzen Music Competition at CMU, including some light opera, art song and musical theatre selections.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 9Musical Cities of Vienna and Paris: The Jewish Connection. Andrea Ratuski is best known for her work as producer and host at CBC in Winnipeg; on Manitoba SCENE, CBC’s website on arts and culture, and CBC Music, the national music website. Currently Andrea hosts at Classic 107, teaches at the Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Arts, at McNally Robinson, and writes for various publications.

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 14Archaeological Musings along the North-west Passage. Margaret Bertulli was a Senior Archaeologist at Parks Canada, Arctic Archaeologist with the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, and Executive Director of the Northern Heritage Society in Yellowknife. She has lectured on cruise ships transiting the Northwest Passage from Greenland, through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago to Alaska.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 16More than Eye Candy: Public Art and the City. Tricia Wasney, Manager of Public Art for the Winnipeg Arts Council, will discuss the important role public art plays in engaging citizens, exploring histories, and reflecting the unique character of a city. A visual presentation on the history of contemporary public art in North America and Winnipeg’s own Public Art Program.

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 21Sheena Rattai Sings David Bowie. On January 19, 2016, the world lost an incredible singer, songwriter and actor, and one of the world’s best selling music artists. From Space Oddity to Lazarus, Winnipeg songstress Sheena Rattai and her killer quintet reimagine the music of the man of many faces. Let’s Dance!

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 23Etiquette and the Art of Civility. Born in Spain, Jesús Ángel Miguel García is founder of the Spanish Institute in Winnipeg. He has been heralded by the Canadian and Spanish media as “ambassador of the Spanish language in Canada”, and recognized by the Consul General of Spain. Jesús is a passionate advocate and promoter of the laws of etiquette and civility in North America.

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 28Winnipeg’s Glamour Era: A Moment in Time. Susan Moffatt, local art historian and educator, takes us through a stay at the Royal Alexandra Hotel, lunch at Moore’s or Eaton’s Grill Room, dining at the Town and Country, and dancing at the Rancho Don Carlos. Through images, history, and memories, this wonderful era of Winnipeg’s history is revisited.

THURSDAY MARCH 2 Noted Docs. Talented University of Manitoba medical students, Richard Zhang, piano, Anna Schwartz, piano, Nicolas Krueger, violin, present classical repertoire featuring, Beethoven, Bach, Dvorak, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saens, and more. With a guest appearance by 13 year old Sheva Schwartz on cello performing Bruch’s moving Kol Nidrei.

TUESDAY, MARCH 7 PRZM is a quartet of trumpeters Shane Hicks, Andrew Littleford, Matthew Walden and Richard Gillis. Each of the musicians have performed professionally for many years with the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Ron Paley Big Band, the Dirty Catfish Brass Band, and others. The quartet will be joined by award winning percussionist Scott Senior.

THURSDAY, MARCH 9Canada’s Choice: The Promise and Failings of Immigration Policy. Tom Denton served in law and management before becoming the founding publisher of the Winnipeg Sun. He was Executive Director of the International Centre and has been Director of Hospitality House Refugee Ministry since 2006. Tom was the first chair of the Manitoba Immigration Council, the Winnipeg Arts Council, and is a Member of the Order of Manitoba.

TUESDAY, MARCH 14A Tribute to Harry Chapin and John Denver. Keith Macpherson, voice, and Jeff Doerr, piano, will highlight the hits of these two prolific singer/songwriters. From Harry Chapin’s Cat’s in the Cradle, Taxi and Circle, to John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Roads, Rocky Mountain High, and Sunshine on My Shoulders, children of the ‘70’s won’t want this concert to end!

THURSDAY MARCH 16 The Mayors of Sambor. Fresh off their recent performance at Ashkenaz festival in Toronto, Myron Schultz, clarinet, Victor Schultz, violin, and Erica Schultz, piano, return to where it all began – their premiere performance at Music ‘N’ Mavens. The siblings take us on a musical journey through Eastern Europe to close out Music ‘N’ Mavens 2017 and lead us into a freilech (festive) spring.

Music ‘N’ Mavens is a highlight of Winnipeg’s arts season, and is one of the Rady JCC’s preeminent programs.Performers and speakers reflect the wide variety of cultural richness that Winnipeg has to offer. The Rady JCC is thrilled to present our annual Music ‘N’ Mavens series. Music ‘N’ Mavens has been here since the Rady JCC opened inside the Asper Campus 19 years ago. This fall, two of our Music ‘N’ Mavens speakers, Patricia Bovey and Marilou McPhedran, were appointed to the upper chamber by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and are now senators. I am proud that many of you have heard them speak on the lecture component of our series here at the Rady JCC. Music ‘N’ Mavens presentations this season cover topics that range from a discussion on the laws of etiquette in North America (February 23) to Canada’s immigration policy (March 9). You can attend a concert tribute to David Bowie (February 21) or experience Vince Fontaine’s band of Indigenous fusion (February 7). Manitoba’s wonderfully talented musicians are showcased throughout the season.Pick up a concert card, or buy one for your best friend as a gift.
