THIS WEEK!

Starting January 7th we will

be changing our Kids Pro-

grams around a little.

All 4 and 5 years old will be

coming up to the Children’s

Suite on the Second Floor for Sunday School.

After Sunday School the kids will come to the sanctuary for

worship in song with the adults. Then return to the

Children’s Suite for Kids Church. Parents will need to pick up

your child(ren) from the Children’s Suite

when church is over.

On Wednesday Nights starting January 3rd, we are offering

a class for all children 4 years and older. This will be a time

of learning more about Jesus and fun. This will also be

located in the Children’s Suite.

I am working on a new schedule of helpers and some of you

have expressed interest in helping. If you would like to help

and have not already told Dreama, please let her know.

We are asking everyone in the church to please pray for the

growth of our Children’s Ministries. We are believing God to

send us kids and that they would fall in love with Jesus.

Please make this a matter of prayer as we go into 2018

Please invite kids to come and be a part of our Children’s

Programs. We are excited and want the Lord to bring kids

and their families to be a part of our family at HBC.

If you have any questions, please see Dreama

Becoming A Faith-Filled Church… “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for

he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6

Until we discover what it means to have faith, we cannot begin

to walk by faith. Faith in God is more than just believing He exists; it is living with confidence that He will fulfill all His promises and bring salvation to us. Our desire and our goal as we begin this new year of 2018 is to go deeper with God and to truly become a faith-filled church. Not in mere words alone, but in our thoughts and actions. We want to discover whether we have placed our faith in God or if we only are wishing His Word is true. As our faith is tested, the true spiritual state of our hearts is revealed. A situation is presented before us where we can act within our own strength, doing whatever we can to manipulate the outcome, or we can trust in God’s strength, taking our hands off the problem and allowing Him to enter the scene. As we begin to walk by faith, there will times when we stumble and fall. However, falling and getting up is part of learning how to walk. Once we get up and dust ourselves off, we take our next step with more wisdom, more strength, more faith. Walking by faith is a lifestyle, a way in which we conduct ourselves. As God molds and shapes us more into His image, He desires for us to live a life of faith, a life that relies upon Him for everything we need. Paul wrote, “For we walk by faith, not by sight…. Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him” 2 Corinthians 5:7, 9. Our new four-week series of “Jesus And We” will focus on four of HBC’s core values. We will be inspired to go deeper in the areas of faith, serving, generosity, and evangelism. And our goal is a simple one…

“As A Church… To Become Faith-Filled, Big Thinking,

Bet The Farm Risk Takers, Who will Never Insult God With Small Thinking Or Safe Living.”

It is said that the definition of insanity is to continue doing things the same old way and yet expecting different results. Are we willing to change? Are we willing to become the people of God He has destined us to be?

You won’t want to miss a single Sunday. Plan to hear each message, to be changed for the better and continue to grow in his grace!

WD-40, Duct Tape, or a Nail?

A man dies and goes to heaven. St. Peter meets him at the Pearly Gates and says, “Here’s how it works. You need 100 points to make it into heaven. You tell me all the good things you’ve done, and I give you a certain number of points for each item, depending on how good it was. When you reach 100 points, you get in.”

“Okay,” the man says, “I was married to the same woman for 50 years and never cheated on her, even in my heart.”

“That’s wonderful,” says St. Peter, “that’s worth two points!” “Two points?!” the man responded. “Well, I attended church all my life and supported its ministry with my tithe and service,” he added. “Terrific!” says St. Peter. “That’s certainly worth a point.” “One point!?!!” the man said! “I started a soup kitchen in my city and worked in a shelter for homeless veterans.” “Fantastic, that’s good for two more points,” he says. “Two points!?!!” Exasperated, the man cries, “At this rate the only way I’ll get into heaven is by the grace of God.” Bingo! 100 points! Come on in!”

We often try to fix problems with WD-40 and duct tape. God did it with a nail. Only by the blood of Jesus!

Learn to Wait

“My times are in Your hand...” – Psalm 31:15

The Psalmist writes, “...I trust in You, O Lord; I say, You are my God. My times are in Your hand...” (Psalm 31:14-15 NKJV) As you walk with God, you’ll find you spend more time waiting than you do anything else. And when you receive what you’re waiting for, then you’ll begin waiting for something else! So if you don’t learn to wait with joy, you’ll live in frustration.

Paul writes, “Let us not grow weary while doing good: for in due season we shall reap, if we do not lose heart.” (Galatians 6:9 NKJV) “Due season” is when God knows the time is right, not when you think it is. God has a set time for accomplishing things in your life, so you might as well settle down and wait, because that’s when it will happen, and not before. God knows what you need, when you need it, and how to get it to you.

You ask, “And what am I supposed to do while I’m waiting?” Trust Him! One Bible teacher writes, “God has taught me to keep living the life I now have while I’m waiting for the things that are in my heart to come to pass. We become so intent on trying to give birth to the next thing that we neither enjoy nor take care of the things at hand.

Don’t Worry, Get Healthy

“When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames

will not consume you.” - Isaiah 43:2 You have three basic choices when it comes to the stress in your life: You can worry, you can ignore your stress, or you can relax and trust God. The Bible says in Psalm 116:7, “I said to myself, ‘Relax, because the

LORD takes care of you.’” You can’t trust God and worry at the same time. That’s not just good spiritual wisdom from the Lord; it’s wisdom for your health as well. The Bible also says in Proverbs 14:30 that a heart at peace is a healthy heart: “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones” (NIV). It’s not just what you eat that destroys your health — it’s what eats you! You can have the best health plan around — eat fresh, healthy, organic, and in proper portions — but if you’re resentful against someone in your life or worry about tomorrow, your health will suffer. Worry is like a poison or a fire. It burns you up inside. I’ll never forget watch-ing an old episode of “Columbo” when Johnny Cash played the bad guy. When he finally got caught, he said, “I’m so glad I got caught, because the guilt was killing me.” I can’t tell you how many reports I’ve read of doctors who said that most people could leave the hospital today if they could get rid of their worries, guilt, and resentment. But there’s good news: You don’t have to worry. Worry is optional misery! You have many things that impact your health that you cannot control. But you can control the amount you worry! God has more than 7,000 promises in the Bible. Many of those promises center on the areas you worry about the most, like the five mentioned above. If you have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, you know the One who created your future. His promises about your future give life, not stomach-eating worry. The Bible says in one of those 7,000 promises: “When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown! When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you” Isaiah 43:2. You have no need to worry. The One who holds your future will walk with you through it. That may be just as important as a diet and gym membership in your journey to physical health in 2016!

A New Year Devotional A new year is here. As we look back and remember the challenges and victories of the past year, we see the faithfulness of God in our lives. Although every problem and challenge has not been resolved, we know by the promises in His Word and through experience that He answers prayer and leads,

guides, and protects His children. In this New Year, let’s look for an invasion of God into impossible situa-tions. Let’s ask Him for faith for the impossible. We cannot create this faith ourselves. Ephesians 2:8 tells us that faith is a gift of God. So we can only humbly come to God and ask Him to increase our faith to believe and rejoice in Him when we face seemingly impossible situations. In Psalm 84:5, we are told that we are blessed when our strength is in Him and we set our hearts on pilgrimage. Each new year is a pilgrimage – a jour-ney that can lead us into a closer relationship with Jesus. In verse 7 of this Psalm, the person who finds strength in God is described as going from strength to strength. We do not have to slide backwards in our relationship with God. As we remain open to the Lord, choosing to rejoice in all circum-stances and trust Him, we receive His strength to always move upward. This means our spiritual walk does not have to be up and down like a roller coast-er. Instead it can be a journey in which we grow spiritually stronger day by day and year by year. This morning, during prayer time, it seems that I could almost hear the Holy Spirit saying “There is a better version of YOU on the way!” As we allow God to move us from strength to strength, we will increasingly discover more of Jesus. How do we do this? Some of our answer is in Isaiah 55:5, which tells us to seek the Lord while He may be found and to call upon Him. Seeking God in every circumstance enables us to receive from Him the strength, courage, wis-dom, and provision we need. Another aspect of receiving from Him is found in following the simple instruc-tions found in 1 Thessalonians 5: Rejoice all the time. Pray without stopping. Give thanks in everything. Don’t quench the Holy Spirit. Don’t despise prophecies. Test everything and hold onto what is good. Stay away from every form of evil. The result of following these instructions will be transformed lives and be-coming the better people that He wants us to be!

Battlefield Of Our Minds

I recall the early days of my Christianity that it didn’t take long for me to realize that an inner war had been declared and that my mind was where the heaviest skirmishes were taking place. The ground force troops had been released so to speak, when I began to recognize that if I was ever going to see victory over

my flesh, it would have to first be won in the battlefront of my thinking. The word tells us, “As a man thinketh in his heart so is he” (Proverbs 23:7).

I immediately jumped into the foxhole of truth that I found in Galatians 2:20: “I am crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ living in me, and the life I now live, I live by faith in the Son of God.”

That hand grenade of a verse, as far as grounding me in the reality that until I die spirituality, no real life was ever going to come forth, was, “Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it abides alone. But, if it dies, it produces many seeds” (John 12:24).

I once heard a well-known man of God describe to an audience his early morning ritual. He stated that the very first thing he does after shutting off the alarm is he stands up, stretches, thanks God for a new day, and then… HE DROPS DEAD!

Of course, the audience roared with laughter. Then he quipped, “No, really, I am dead serious!” More laughter ensued. After the hilarity had finally subsided and all eyes were “ten hup” to the wisdom of his next statements, like a good soldier of the Lord, he began to strategically take us through the process of daily mortification of the flesh. The first rules of engagement include the following:

Announce that your carnal mind has been declared DOA (dead on arrival). You’ll now be reporting to a new commander in chief from this point on. Never forget, the battles are won and lost in the arena of your mind.

I now faithfully report to my commanding officer every morning. And I’m proud to say I am gaining more and more ground over the lies of the enemy. Some days I find myself dying a thousand deaths within a 24-hour day. This carnal mind does not die easily, but it has to submit to the authority of Jesus Christ.

So now, every morning, I hear the reveille of God’s bugle as He wakes me up to the reality that, yes, the battle is on, but THE WAR HAS ALREADY BEEN WON. I simply stand in an unwavering faith, believing that it is no longer I who lives, but Christ living in me. As Romans 8:37 says, I am more than a conqueror!

Believe That Your Faith Can Increase.

Every Christian has been given “a measure of faith” (Romans 12:3). While each of us has been given a certain capacity to believe, it can increase. Isn’t that great news? Exhibit A for growing faith is the Apostle Peter. Remember what Peter was like in the Gospels? He tried hard but failed, said the wrong thing at the wrong time, and kept messing up at critical moments. Peter was the one who swore loyalty to Jesus then denied even knowing Him

(Mark 14:26–31, 66–72). Peter was the one who followed Jesus after His arrest but only from a safe distance (Mark 14:54). When Peter tried walking on the water, he sank, and Jesus called him, “O you of little faith” (Matthew 14:31). Ouch.

Yes, Peter had little faith and a lot of growing to do, but he made one good decision: He followed Jesus’ instructions, went to that upper room, and waited for the Holy Spirit to come and fill him. When the Spirit of God filled Peter in response to his faith, he was transformed. He preached boldly, and three thousand people were saved. Peter became a powerful, faith-filled man Peter was a changed man, transformed by the power of the Spirit through faith. Do you want Peter-size faith? Believe that your faith can increase!

HBC - Becoming The Church God Intends Us To Be!

There is no greater movement in the history of the world than the church. The church, at her best, is unstoppable! This passage describes the key components of a healthy local church.

The church is not a building we come and sit in; it is a movement we choose to be a part of. The church = people. In Acts 2, as the people met to-gether, the church became attractive to a watching world. God added to their number every day!

The reality is that the hope of the world is the message of Jesus through the local church. And you have a place in that! You are invited to be a part of the greatest movement in the history of the world.

If you view church as only a place you go to once a week, than you are missing out on all that God intended for you. God desires you to belong to a small group community, a group of people you can be challenged with, share with, cry with, and laugh with. This group wants to do life with you. This spring when groups launch back up, make a commitment to join a group. The reality is we are all better together.

Along with that, God is inviting you to use your gifts within the church. Opportunities exist for you to follow Jesus. By serving, you will experience the awe and favor of God, in the guests we greet, the kids we serve and students we invest in. No matter where you choose to serve, there will be life change in you, and in those you serve.

Let us believe

that HBC will be stronger than

ever financially in 2018.

Start the year out right with a fresh financial commitment!
