The project con-

sists of the con-

struction of a

reservoir and the

installation of

irrigation pipe to

collect and dis-

perse water over

13 hectares of

agricultural land

farmed by the

community.

The irrigation system will permit residents to grow crops throughout the year: Oc-

tober to April, and May to September. The extra growing season will provide food

to feed the families as well as crops that they can sell at local markets. As you

can imagine, the project will make a significant improvement in the lives of the

120 extremely poor families living in Inka Paucar, near Cusco, Peru. Contribu-

tions of $4250 from the Rotary Clubs of Soda Springs, Blue Lakes Twin Falls, Rex-

burg, Buhl, Twin Falls, Boise and Boise Sunrise were joined by District 5150

$4000, District 5400 $4250, The Rotary Foundation $8835 and Rotary Club of

Inca Paucar, $1000. All of the labor was provided by the local community.

What do you get when 8 Rotary Clubs over Three

Districts and Two Countries Join Forces for a Criti-

cal Need? Water, food, & Economic Development!

GSE Team (l-r) Caitlin Lanier, Liz Olsen, Brooke Green,

Jessica Flynn & Krista Madril.

Over the holiday period, District

web master, Darl Bennett, con-

verted over to a newer version of

Club Runner, 2.0. If you haven’t

visited the site recently, take a

few minutes and familiarize

yourself with it. It is still a ‘work

in process’ and some of the fea-

tures are not yet active. Some

others are unable to be changed

but we welcome your input and

suggestions as we work to im-

prove this useful tool for our

members.

Meet the 2012 GSE Team Check out our new Look!

Celebrate Rotary Awareness Month and the beginning of a new year is a

good opportunity to renew inspiration for the rest of the Rotary year. What do you

and your club have planned to help create awareness in the general community or

increasing the knowledge of members? Need some ideas? Here is a start...

■ How about a program on Rotary history and include the history of your club? If

you read the Anniversary section of the newsletter, some clubs in D5400 are

more than 50 years old—what a rich history they must have!

■ I love this idea! Dedicate 5-10 minutes at each meeting this month and have

members share a personal story or experience that they have had because of Ro-

tary. Every Rotarian has a Rotary story that can be educational and inspiring.

■ What about writing a Public Service Announcement (PSA) for the local media

featuring a project your club is involved with? It could be local like the joint efforts

of the Pocatello clubs with Brooklyn’s Playground or one with an international fla-

vor such as the multi-club & district irrigation project in Peru (see separate article

further in this newsletter).

■ Establish a goal to have a short amount of time on a regular basis, like once a

month, where a portion of the club meeting focuses on a different program within

Rotary. There are tremendous resources on the website that make this an easy

goal to accomplish.

Rotary is too great of an organization to keep all to ourselves—share the opportu-

nities of what being a Rotarian can offer, not just this month, but the entire year

long.

It’s Rotary Awareness Month

DID YOU KNOW...

♦CORRECTION FROM DECEMBER—an

error was made in the Did You Know

column last month. In Club Runner,

under an individual’s profile, the Anni-

versary date IS actually intended to

be for wedding anniversaries. The

date joined is where you should put

the date you became a Rotary mem-

ber. The editor regrets the error.

♦That Rotary International has an ar-

chives component on the web site?

Do you have a Rotary treasure hiding

in your attic that you'd like to donate?

Contact Rotary History and Archives at

[email protected]. Early convention

materials, papers from past RI presi-

dents, and many other items help tell

Rotary's story.

♦That the Interact program will be

celebrating its 50th anniversary in

2012? The Rotary Archives is espe-

cially interested in artifacts, docu-

ments, and photographs related to the

early history of the program.

♦ That the Rotary Peace Fellow is an

opportunity for individuals to obtain a

master's degree in international rela-

tions, sustainable development,

peace studies, and conflict resolution,

or a professional development certifi-

cate in peace and conflict studies.

There are seven Rotary Peace Centers

throughout the world, located in No.

Carolina, Thailand, Sweden, Australia,

England, Tokyo, and Brazil. The cost

averages between $50-80,000 and is

a very competitive process. District

5400 has never submitted an appli-

cant—something we hope to change in

2012!

National Immunization Day (NID) Opportunity to India Announced

“You will never be the same after you have looked into the appre-

ciative eyes of someone whose life you have changed”

A journey to help immunize children in India will

change your life in ways you never imagined! It

may be one of the last opportunities to partici-

pate in an NID - we are getting so very close to

full eradication of Polio, NID’s will soon be

(thankfully!) a thing of the past.

This trip will combine participation in National

Polio Immunization activities as well as interaction with local Ro-

tarians and site-seeing enjoyment. Offered by Howard Tours, with

decades of experience hosting Rotary tours, the dates are Febru-

ary 22—March 3rd. For more information on the itinerary and

cost, visit the District web site.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Make a commitment today to become an EREY member...

Rotary Memorial

A new item will be added to our schedule at

the District Conference, May 18-19, in Sun Val-

ley. This short program will be a memorial to

those Rotarians and/or spouses who have

passed away during the year.

This "Moment of Remembrance" will have a

photograph of the individual (if one is avail-

able), the person's name, Club affiliations,

years in Rotary, any Rotary offices held and any

short comment deemed appropriate. The indi-

vidual's "page" will be limited to a single page.

The responsibility for getting this information

included in the "Moment of Remembrance" will

be left to the Club.

All information and photo-

graph should be sent to

Frank Lara, [email protected].

Any questions should also

be directed to Frank. The

earlier this information is

sent to him, the better.
