No life, however blessed, passes fully without the moment of wondering what could have been. What if I'd made that choice - gone down that path - chosen that person. And for some, that reflection yields a peaceful epiphany of rightness, a Popeye-like certainty that "I am what I am." And for others, that wondering lifts the lid on Pandora's box. The titles should be familiar: Rabbit Hole, Kimberly Akimbo, Fuddy Meers, Wonder of the World. He also writes librettos (the musical High Fidelity), lyrics (Shrek the Musical) and movie scripts.

Playwright proves you can go home again

If you were to say David Lindsay-Abaire is a big deal in the American theater, you'd be right.

Good People, his comedy-tinted drama about an out-of-work Boston cashier, is the most popular play at regional theaters nationwide this season, with 17 productions. It's about class and social status and what happens when chasing the American dream collides with doing the right thing.

The world of New York theater is quite a philosophical distance from the workaday ways of South Boston, aka Southie, where Lindsay-Abaire grew up and where Good People is set. He knew if he wrote about it, he'd have to get it right.

about the people respectfully." Lindsay-Abaire's path from Southie to

New York and home again began when he was drafted to write his high school's traditional ninth-grade play. "You're the funny one, you should write it," he was told. He went on to write first-ever plays for his 10th- and 11th-grade classes, as well. In 12th grade, he wrote a musical.

Lindsay-Abaire majored in theater at Sarah Lawrence College but considered himself an actor until his early days at Juilliard, in a class taught by dramatist Christopher Durang. Then it clicked.

"It was sort of a novel concept to me," he says, speaking quickly, softly and with an edge of amusement.

The New York Times called Good People "very fine." The Boston Globe said it has "a rare acuity of perception" and "packs a substantial emotional wallop." The website Theatermania said it "defies onlookers to leave without feeling deeply satisfied."

Lindsay-Abaire, 43, writes plays about outsiders searching for clarity. And he's comfortable with incongruences rubbing

up against each other. Kimberly Akimbo, Fuddy Meers and Wonder of the World are hilarious yet oddly touching; Rabbit Hole balances ironic humor and deep sadness, as Atlanta audiences know because all have been staged by metro theaters.

Good People touches on all of those, in one way or another, and Lindsay-Abaire, who lives in a three-story Victorian in Brooklyn with his wife and two young sons, is surprised at how it's become more relevant with time.

During a Boston run last fall, he heard comments on how much he'd changed the script, with observers citing references to Mitt Romney's White House run. The script hadn't changed but the world had. The Occupy Wall Street movement had sprung up and campaign rhetoric was fiery. Good People, the playwright says, was reverberating in new and different ways.

How Good People resonates in Atlanta remains to be seen. Lindsay-Abaire, meanwhile, will keep writing plays because, as he says with characteristic humor, "It's the only thing I'm good at."

T his play is not entitled Bad People and it isn’t about folks who are

good on occasion. The main character, Margie, (pronounced with a hard "g") is fallible, vulnerable, sneaky and argumentative. She’s also poor and loyal and funny and independent. The complications involved in just being human are accepted. Indeed, the strength of the writing is in living the struggle, and honoring the degree of difficulty. The concept of a “good” person is explored from the everyday sense of fellowship to the more complex demands of ethical trust.

Over time, all of us learn a couple of valuable home truths: Nobody is one thing all of the time, and maturity is the ability to live with ambiguity. In the hands of a plebian writer, another kitchen-sink drama might leave these maxims at the level of recognition. Playwright David Lindsay-Abaire takes us beyond what is a clear naturalistic expression, manages to theatrically elevate the obvious to the insightful, and creates a personal challenge that extends beyond simple recognition.

Interesting work always seems timely and relevant no matter when it was created. A number of the same issues that arose during our presidential election are embedded in this play, and supply additional street cred to the production. Good People is about a lot of things, ranging from the Southies of Boston and social class to how our fates

are shaped by character. The potential for different ideas to resonate with individual audience members makes for stimulating theatre … and sparkling conversations at intermission.

As I read the script, I was repeatedly reminded of comments made by our summer Olympians. Even the youngest competitors matched their indomitable work ethic to the endless support they received from good people, and paid homage to the degree of sheer luck involved in winning an event by a thousandth of a second. The contingency of history and social position at the time make for dramatic events, but they become more significant and compelling at the level of art.

An interviewer trying to delve into all of these themes and issues, finally said to Lindsay-Abaire, “… so you are really just writing about people …,” and the writer replied, “That’s all.” It’s a good trick when “that’s all” becomes a humorous, often tense, never obvious, always entertaining yarn filled with the truth and mystery of inconsistency, and the complexity of the human psyche. Along the way, we also discover that it is quite an accomplishment to be described to others as “good people.”

production of Angels in America. Through the years she has worked with almost every theatre in Atlanta and was a resident artist at Theater Emory and member of the Emory faculty from 1983 to 2000, where she was honored by her colleagues with the establishment of the Brenda Bynum Award. She is currently commissioned to develop a performance based on the life and work of acclaimed Georgia author and human rights activist Lillian Smith, which will premiere in April 2013. She still loves Samuel Beckett, but her heart belongs to Royce and Whit and her faithful sidekick, RCB.

dAVid LindSAY-ABAiRE (Playwright) is a playwright, screenwriter, lyricist, and librettist whose play Good People premiered on Broadway in 2011, starring Frances McDormand. Rabbit Hole also premiered on Broadway and went on to receive the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Spirit of America Award, and five Tony nominations. He was nominated for a Grammy Award (Best

Musical Show Album) and two Tony Awards (Best Book of a Musical and Best Score) for his work on Shrek The Musical. Prior to that, David was awarded the 2008 Ed Kleban Award as America's most promising musical theater lyricist. David's other plays include Fuddy Meers, Kimberly Akimbo, Wonder of the World and A Devil Inside, among others. In addition to his work in theatre, David's screen credits include his screen adaptation of Rabbit Hole (starring Nicole Kidman, Aaron Eckart, and Dianne Wiest, and directed by John Cameron Mitchell), as well as the upcoming features Guardians of Childhood (Dreamworks), and Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney, directed by Sam Raimi). David is a proud New Dramatists alum, a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and the Juilliard School, as well as a member of the WGA and the Dramatists Guild Council.

SuSAn V. BooTH (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001, and has initiated the Collision Project for teens, the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition,

created local producing partnerships and has overseen regional collaborative productions as well as commercial partnerships on projects including Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk; and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. As a director, she has worked nationally at theatres including the Goodman, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern and DePaul universities, and serves as adjunct faculty with Emory University. She is the past president of the board of directors for Theatre Communications Group (the

Mariann has received design awards in New York City, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta and is a recipient of a Distinguished Achievement Awards from her undergrad and high school alma maters. She is head of the Costume Design program at Boston University College of Fine Arts School of Theater.

KEn YunKER (Lighting Design) An Atlantan since 1989, Mr. Yunker is the resident lighting designer for the Sarasota Opera Association, a principal designer for the Atlanta Opera and the resident designer for Opera New Jersey/Princeton. A regular at the Alliance Theatre, past designs include What I Learned in Paris, Into the Woods, August: Osage County, Avenue X, Mrs. Warren’s Profession, Aladdin, Bluish, Go, Dog. Go!, The Underpants, Einstein Is a Dummy, Day of Kings, The Miracle Worker, Leap, Ferdinand the Bull. CLAY BEnning (Sound Designer) has been the Resident Sound Designer at the Alliance Theatre for 13 years and has designed more than 75 productions. Recent works include Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, Into the Woods, God of Carnage, and The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls. Associate artist at Georgia Shakespeare

with more than 20 productions. Other designs include Atlanta Ballet, Cincinnati Playhouse, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Theatrical Outfit, Synchronicity Theatre. JoHn SCoTT RoSS (Assistant Stage Manager) hails from Springfield, Ohio and has been steadily employed in the entertainment industry since 1975. Scott interned for Player's Theater of Columbus and furthered his studies at HB Studios in New York City. Scott started his career as an actor, touring children's theater, working Off Broadway and appearing in television commercials. Mr. Ross has been a proud member of Actors Equity Association since 1977. Scott was the Technical Director for the original Off Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors, the Production Manager for Stage Right Entertainment, Inc. as well as providing Stage and/or Production Management for The Arts Festival of Atlanta, First Night Atlanta, The Center for Puppetry Arts and Menopause the Musical. Recently he has worked for the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and many productions here at the Alliance including Next to Normal, Ghost Brothers… and Bring It On.

JiRéH HoLdER (Dramaturg) joined the Alliance Theatre family last season as the literary intern where he served as the primary dramaturgical support on God of Carnage. He is elated to be a part of the team for a second season as the Kenny Leon Fellow. He graduated from Morehouse College (B.A. Theatre), where he served as the artistic director of Spelman College Playwrights’ Workshop

and directed several productions. He made his playwriting debut last year at Theater Emory (6x6) and was a writer for The Collective Project, Inc.’s December production The Theory of Everything. Jiréh is humbled and excited to be making his dramaturgical debut with such an impressive group of artists. He owes a great deal of thanks to two friends and mentors: Celise Kalke for the opportunity and Jade Lambert-Smith for the inspiration.

JodY FELdMAn (Associate Producer) has been the head of casting for the Alliance Theatre since 1991. She has cast more than 200 LORT B, D and TYA productions for the Alliance including a wide range of classical, contemporary and world premiere dramas and musicals. She has worked with such directors as Susan V. Booth, Kenny Leon, David H. Bell, Kent Gash, Doug Hughes, Gary Griffin, Molly Smith and Andy Blankenbuehler. Since the Alliance is a center for new play development and productions, Jody has been privileged to cast a large number of new plays including The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry, Flyin’ West and Blues for an Alabama Sky by Pearl Cleage, In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell Alvin McCraney, and world premiere musicals such as Aida, The Color Purple, Sister Act: The Musical and Bring It On: The Musical. Jody also serves as casting director for Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company and worked as Atlanta casting director for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Tribute in Washington, D.C., and the feature film Charming the Hearts of Men. Jody began her theatre career as an actress and then as assistant general manager at the Academy Theatre with Frank Wittow. A couple of years ago, on a trip to New York, on the recommendation of the Alliance's Jody

Feldman, my wife Kimberly and I took a journey to Broadway to see Frances mcDormand star

in the new play Good People. What a wonderful decision that turned out to be. Good People

proved to be a fabulous night of funny, poignant and incrediblly entertaining theater.

I loved a lot about Good People and not just because it took place in my hometown, Boston,

massachusetts. The play proved to be most of what I look for in a great play, well written

characters, incredibly funny dialogue and a plot with unexpected twists and powerful moments

that kept me totally engrossed. It was a perfect night of theater written by a playwright that truly understood how real

people, not entirely good or bad, live their lives and interact. What a great choice to bring to the Alliance Theatre, I am

Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. The theatre has gained national recognition and prominence as Atlanta has become a leading international city. In 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta children’s Theatre (founded in 1929) in order to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. In 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. In 2007, under the leadership of Susan Booth, the Jennings hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance received the regional Theatre Tony Award®, in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement.
