Musicals are sneaky.

Once upon a time I had a terrible attitude toward musicals. As a lover of political plays — the denser and more provocative the better — I’d relegated the musical form to the corner of my brain otherwise occupied by romance novels, action films and Cheetos. Good, fluffy stuff with negligible nutritional value. I had trouble willingly suspending my disbelief as lovers broke into song.

Then I sat in the back of the house, performance after performance, and watched The Color Purple transfix an audience as diverse as Atlanta. And something clicked. Here was a deeply subversive way to talk about the most complicated and thorny topics while adopting an entrancing stylistic language that kept people at the table. Brilliant. Brilliant like Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, who had the sheer audacity to take on the effects of mental illness in a family in this subversive, sneaky form — and to come out the other end of that journey with not only a few Tonys, but a rarely-given-to-musicals Pulitzer Prize for Drama for their breathtaking effort.

Talk about sneaky. Talk about brilliant. And, I think, in about two hours time, you’re going to be talking about Next to Normal.

Startlingly honest and chillingly beautiful, the story of Next to Normal swoops from the satirical triviality of a family’s daily routine to

the personal chasms of yearnings and despair. Suburban mother Diana draws her surroundings into the highs of emotional frenzies and lows of weakening sadness. Beyond the clinical examination of a modern family dealing with a crisis, Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey’s musical adopts perspectives “next to” the realistic in order to explore the paradox of an almost impossible normalcy in a physically and psychologically polluted world.

The harmony of life’s darkness and light program note by Vessela Warner

Next to Normal looks critically at a society incapacitated by fast-paced living, high-reaching goals, simulated social contacts, compartmentalized identities, and stimulant-enhanced feelings.

Social environment affects Diana, the modern archetype of a grieving mother who has been denied the opportunity

to grieve. Her troubled memories of the past and delicate psyche are medically treated, clinically classified, feared by her pensive husband, and ostracized by her attention-seeking daughter.

The precarious situation of Diana’s family places all characters in the margins of existence: “next to the

normal” and struggling to step into the light of self-understanding, acceptance of one another, and happiness.

The subject matter of Next to Normal resounds with the dramas of Eugene O’Neill and Tennessee Williams. It voices the themes of soul-seeking and dream-chasing between the real and the metaphysical, where true emotional existence falls. It shares the somber storytelling and dark symbolism of two other recent musicals, Spring Awakening (2006) and Sleeping Beauty Wakes (2007), which also tackle the questions of humans' subjectivity and psychological inadaptability against societal barriers.

Next to Normal opened on Broadway in 2009 to much acclaim, following a five-year period of workshops and readings and two early professional productions.

Shying from the eye-pleasing choreographic and dramatic numbers typical of musicals, Next to Normal implicates a rock concert or modern opera, in which intricately orchestrated songs elevate the plot and convey octaves of stirring emotions. Critics have raved at the “grace and power” of this “feel-everything musical” (The New York

Times) that rocks and rolls “like thunder” (Rolling Stone) to [strike] a "blow for the American musical’s future" (The Washington Post).

After a successful two-year run on Broadway, extensive touring, and numerous local and international productions, Next to Normal brings to the Alliance stage the harmony of life’s darkness and light.

Vessela Warner is an Assistant Professor of Theatre History at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Next to Normal’s creators were in the Booth Theater one night while their

new musical was in previews on Broadway. A teenaged boy approached them.

“Are you Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt?” he asked.

They told him they were. The boy had been diagnosed with

bipolar disorder three months earlier, he told them, adding: “Now I have something to point to, to explain what I’ve been going through. I wanted to say thank you.”

Those kinds of moments are what make Next to Normal composer Tom Kitt, now 38 and the father of three, want to write musicals.

“At the end of the day, I want people to leave the theater with new feelings or a new understanding in some way,” he says. He doesn’t care so much if the change is trivial or profound, whether he provokes a laugh, or inspires and comforts, as long as audience members are moved.

That moment in the Booth Theatre came some 11 years after Yorkey and Kitt first poked at the idea of a musical about mental illness.

They’d been accepted to the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, a New York testing ground for lyricists, composers and new shows. At the end of the first year, all participants were tasked with writing a 10-minute musical.

Yorkey, the lyricist, had seen a TV news report about electroconvulsive therapy and suggested they do a piece about a woman who struggled with depression and had to turn to ECT for help. Kitt agreed.

The piece was called Feeling Electric. It was, Kitt says, a bit campy and satirical.

But the general plot and story arc were in place as were several songs — including the heartbreaking waltz “I Dreamed a Dance” and the angry “Aftershocks.”

Reaction was mixed. Some who’d seen it were moved. Others questioned whether a musical could really come from that subject matter.

“If you’re getting a reaction like that,” Kitt says, “you’re really onto something.”

The team spent the next nine years researching, writing and rewriting. They

talked to doctors, including Yorkey’s father-in-law, a psychiatrist. They read Andrew Solomon’s The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression and Electroboy: A Memoir of Mania by Andy Behrman. They worked to find the right tone.

“We got away from the camp and the satire,” Kitt recalls, “and to a truthful story of a family dealing with [mental health] issues.”

Then came readings, a concert version and another reading.

Kitt and Yorkey wanted to keep writing but also wondered if they could pull it off. Practical issues, like families and bills, tugged at them. Then, as luck would have it, a couple of producers stepped in. David Stone and Carole Rothman, Artistic Director of New York’s Second Stage Theatre, took the show and its creators “under their wing,” Kitt says.

The show, newly retitled Next to Normal, was done at New York’s Second Stage in 2008. A run at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., followed and then, finally, Broadway, where it opened on April 15, 2009, at the Booth Theatre on 45th Street. Although Next to Normal lost the best musical Tony Award to Billy Elliot, Yorkey and Kitt won Tonys for their score — and the show collected the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, only the eighth musical so honored in the award’s 95 years.

It’s now being done in places like Israel, Norway, Australia and South Korea.

Next to Normal has been described as a rock musical, or a rock opera. Kitt, who grew up as a classically trained pianist, uses neither. He calls it “theatrical music,” with elements of jazz, classical, a number of waltzes and some driving rock.

“I tried to write songs that support the dramatic purpose of the moment,” he says.

Kitt and Yorkey are working on a new original musical, i.e., not from a movie, with the Normal team. It may or may not involve Wicked’s Idina Menzel. And that’s all Kitt will say about it.

Maybe that show, too, will reach Broadway and, like Next to Normal, play around the world. Kitt would like that.

“Hearing your songs sung in different languages and seeing audiences around the world respond to your show, there’s no feeling like it.”

When i moved to Atlanta from los Angeles, i was delighted to discover the richness of culture that Atlanta has to offer. The Alliance Theatre and its productions are a wonderful example of this. As a practicing psychiatrist, i see on a daily basis the impact of mental illness on our patients and their families. What draws me into Next to Normal is the humanity of the main character as she and her family struggle through life in a flawed but authentic and real way. Next to Normal is creative and thought provoking, leaving you inspired by

the courage and resilience of its characters. — Mark Hyman Rapaport, M.D.,

Chair, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory www.psychiatry.emory.edu

about the alliance theatreFounded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. The theatre has gained national recognition and prominence as Atlanta has become a leading international city. in 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta children’s Theatre (founded in 1929) in order to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. in 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. in 2007, under the leadership of Susan Booth, the Jennings hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance received the regional Theatre Tony Award®, in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement.

realizing that our audience and the national field supports plays developed in Atlanta, the Alliance has created a large body of new work. The Alliance produces world premiere American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent regional productions. The theatre creates and nurtures the plays and careers of early-career playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National graduate Playwriting competition, providing a premiere for the winner as part of our regular season and national networking opportunities for four finalists. locally based artists create work on a nationally watched stage, launching and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Finally we create and produce original plays for young audiences at every age level: from the collision Project, which creates opportunities for high school artists to collide with classic texts, to the groundbreaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive work for infants and toddlers.

The Alliance takes great pride in our multigenerational educational programming. Believing that the same excellence found on our stage must be found in our education programs, the Alliance created the institute for Educators and Teaching Artists. A collaborative partnership between the Alliance and partner schools, the institute programs equip teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These innovative programs include gA Wolf Trap, a nationally recognized professional learning program that focuses on literacy skills for children in pre-K – 2nd grade; Dramaturgy K-12, a unique program that empowers student scholars to create research material that both informs Alliance productions and prepares their peer audiences; and collision Plus, which takes the creativity and collaboration of the collision Project into our high school classrooms. The Alliance also offers community education, including classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development (working with local writers and playwrights from the National graduate Playwriting competition). Twice recognized by the Federal Department of Education as leaders in the field of arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access.

The Alliance Theatre strives to set the highest artistic standards and create the powerful experience of shared theatre for a diverse audience. Above all else, we value excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration.

Have you ever left a show and wanted more? Have you

needed to know about the history that the play is steeped in, the politics of

the time, how the designers arrived at their final concepts or maybe just a

behind-the-scenes viewpoint of the actors’ rehearsal process?

The Alliance Theatre has just the ticket for you—and it’s free and open to the public. One hour before most Tuesday

evening performances and immediately following most Saturday matinees,

the Alliance presents an opportunity for our savvy audience members to

get just a little more with our Before Play and After Words Series for Alliance Stage shows.

Our Before Plays are moderated discussions led by Alliance Theatre

staff and tend to delve deeper into one aspect of the play, whereas the

After Words discussions are usually with select members of the cast

and focus on the experience of performing and rehearsing the show.

For the Alliance’s production of Next to Normal, we are adding additional

opportunities for our audiences to engage with our partners from Emory

Healthcare’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences to explore

the topic of mental illness and its effects on families. In addition to our Tuesday Before Plays and Saturday After Words, Emory Healthcare Faculty will also join us after the show on select Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons for an illuminating Q&A.

By Alicia Quirk, Alliance Program Publication Editor

Page 33: October 2012: Next to Normal at the Alliance Theatre

The Alliance Theatre posed a few questions to Faculty Members of Emory Healthcare’s Department of Psychiatry to learn about Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) which Diana, the central character in Next to Normal, is grappling with as a treatment option.

A: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) works by electrically stimulating

the brain to improve the release of neurochemicals that aid in the treatment of

certain types of mental illnesses.

A: Modern use of ECT is highly effective for people with persistent mood disorders or manias, particularly those who have been non-responsive to

traditional medications. It is also used as a treatment for people who are severely depressed and need to have quick

and immediate treatment versus medications that may take weeks to take effect.

Q: What is ECT?

Q: Why is ECT used?

A: Yes, ECT is quite safe, and modern-day ECT is done with at least two doctors (an

anesthesiologist and a psychiatrist) in the room monitoring the patient. ECT is performed under anesthesia and is painless. This was

not always the case even up to thirty years ago, but around 1980 several advances in the ECT equipment and the treatments themselves made the

procedure much safer. About the same time, the National Institute of Mental Health funded a series of landmark large, multicenter trials that provided the basis for the evidenced based procedures that serve as the protocols

Emory doctors use in performing ECT. These protocols improved both the safety and efficacy of the acute treatment as well as

addressing concerns for long-term side effects (such as memory problems).

Q: Is ECT safe? How has ECT changed over

the years?

Outmaneuver cancer.Navigating your cancer treatment can feel like a full-time job. That’s why WellStar created the Nurse Navigator program.

From the start, your Nurse Navigator serves as your guide and liaison, working with WellStar oncologists, cancer surgeons, and other specialists to streamline your care and ease your mind. She can also connect your loved ones to resources throughout the community.

Your Nurse Navigator will manage coordination among your doctors, help you understand your treatment options, and simply listen to your concerns.

WellStar Nurse Navigators are available to all cancer patients and their families. To learn more about cancer treatment at WellStar, call 770-956-STAR (7827) or visit the new wellstar.org.

We believe you are stronger

than cancer.

The vision of WellStar Health System is to deliver world-class healthcare. Our not-for-profit health system includes WellStar Cobb Hospital, WellStar Douglas Hospital, WellStar Kennestone Hospital, WellStar Paulding Hospital, WellStar Windy Hill Hospital and WellStar Medical Group.
