Families must encourage and facilitate marriage, closing all doors that may lead to unlawful sex andpremarital relationships.

One of the moral traits recommended in theQur’an is “ForFor givgivenesseness”: Forgiveness promotessuch positive states of mind as hope, patience, and self-confidence by reducing anger, suffering, depression and stress. Those who do not abide by the moral valuesof the Qur’an find it very difficult to forgiveothers. However Allah has advised the faithfulthat forgiveness is more proper. Allah Ta’alasays in the Noble Qur’an: .....But if you pardonand overlook and forgive - then indeed, Allah is

forgiving and Merciful. (64:14)Believer’s notion of forgiveness is very differentto that of those who do not live by the moralof the Qur’an. Even though many people maysay they have forgiven someone who hasoffended them, it nevertheless takes a longtime to free themselves of the hatred andanger in their hearts. On the other hand, theforgiveness of believers is sincere. Becausebelievers know that human beings are tried inthis world, and learn by their mistakes.

Q. My parents died manyyears ago. Is there anythingI should do in terms ofkindness towards themafter their death?

A. Our duties towards our parentsdo not cease with their death, rather they continue as long as welive. A man approached theProphet Muhammad asking: Isthere anything I must do in terms ofkindness towards my parents aftertheir death? The Prophet replied:Yes, there are four things for you todo: Praying and asking forgiveness ofAllah on their behalf, fulfilling theirpromises, respecting their friends andfostering their ties of kinship.(Muslim) Lastly, there are Hadithsthat indicates that often a personin the grave suddenly finds hisstation elevated or conditionschange, and when he/she enquireswhy it is happening to him, he istold that it is by virtue of the gooddeeds or prayers of his offspringon his/her behalf. All in all thisencourages to remember ourdeparted parents through prayersand suppilcations.

Q. How can a Muslim disciplinehimself, especially if he/she hasshortcomings with regard toreligious commitment, whichAllah Ta’ala knows bestabout?

A. Acknowledging your shortcomings isone of the first steps in discipliningyourself.Allah Ta’ala says in the Noble

Qur’an: Verily Allah will not change theconditions of a people as long as they donot change their state themselves. (3:11)So, whoever tries to change for thesake of Allah, Allah will help him tochange. Each person is individuallyresponsible for his/her own self and willbe questioned individually. The ways inwhich a Muslim can discipline himselfare as follows: (1) Worshipping Allah, keeping in contact with Him, andsubmitting to Him. (2) Reading theNoble Qur’an in a great deal, ponderingits meanings and seeking to understandit. (3)Reading useful religious booksthat describe the ways of treating andcleansing the heart as well as reading thebiographies of our pious predecessors (4)Staying in the company of the pious peopleand many more.

Q. I am working in an organizationwhich allows employees to takeloans with low interest. What isyour advise?

A. Interest (Riba) is Haraam (prohibited) inIslam regardless of whether the rate islow or high. Hence a good Muslim isrequired to save no effort in avoidinginterest in his dealings and seek thecorrect alternatives even if they arevery difficult for him.Our advise is thatdon’t take interest-based loans.

The Prophet said:The best actof kindness is for the son touphold ties (of friendship) with thosewho were his father’s friends.

Q. We constantly become eitherguest or host and based onclear Hadiths, we know therights of the guest but will youplease enlighten us the rightsof the host/hostess?

A. The rights of a host on his guestare that he thanks him for hishospitality, for Allah Ta’ala doesnot appreciate those who do notappreciate people. It is also thehost’s right that his guest guardshis privacy in whatever he hascome to learn through theirinteraction.Whatever he has seenthat is good, he should make itknown, and whatever he has seenthat is bad, he should keep itsecret and hidden. Likewise, it isthe host’s right upon his guest thathe protect the sanctity of hishome, so he must not betray himin his house with his eyes. He mustnot extend his sight to any of hiswomenfolk or anything that isprivate. He must not overstay athis home, making a burden ofhimself by staying longer than thelength prescribed by Shariah for aguest to stay, which is three days.

Q. I would like to know how canan individual reap maximumbenefit from the Qur’an?

A. If you truly want to reap benefitfrom the Qur’an, your heart mustbe attentive and alert whenreciting it or listening to it.Listening to it carefully withpresence of mind, paying attention

to it as if Allah Ta’ala was speakingto you directly. Allah Ta’ala says:Truly there is a reminder in this foranyone who has a heart or wholistens attentively with presence ofmind. (50:37) So long as you have aheart, and you listen to the Qur’anattentively with the presence ofyour mind, the end-result isobtained: benefiting from the Qur’anand taking heed.

Q. What is the importanceand significance of sayingInsha-Allah (Allah Willing)?

A. First of all, we would like to stressthat there is a clear indication inthe Qur’an to utter the phraseInsha-Allah upon embarking on acertain act. Allah Ta’ala says: Andsay not anything: Lo! I shall do thattomorrow. Except if Allah will...(23:24) Allah willing or Insha-Allahis a phrase of great importance.Islam teaches us that whenever aperson is going to embark uponany venture, he/she should say:Insha-Allah before he/she begins. This is to acknowledge the realitythat Allah Alone is the Doer in thisworld. Man can only wish butoccurence rest with Allah Alone.

The Prophet said:There is noperson like a person who takes thereigns and fights for the sake of Allah, avoiding people’s evil, giving meal to hisguest, honouring his right.

Q. I admire Muslim women whoadorn the Hijab. As a maleMuslim I would like to know ifthere is certain dress code formen?

A. Islamically, a dress is supposed toserve two purposes: (1) Coveringthe Awrah (private parts) of thebody. (2) Serving the purpose ofadornment and beautification.Reviewing the Qur’an, we find thatAllah Ta’ala describes the dress ofbelievers as: The Dress of Piety orLibasut-Taqwa and this exactlyemphasizes the aforementionedtwo conditions and stresses thatsuch a dress should never be usedfor showing off. Islam has providedfew guidelines to achieve thisquality: (1) The first condition isthat the dress has to be Halaal byits origin, i.e. purchased or ownedthrough Halaal earnings. (2) Thesecond is that it must not implyimitation of other people’s dress. This means we should not imitateother religious attire or style. (3)The third condition is that thedress must not involve any kind offeminine style of adornment: Puresilk, golden dress, very bright andfast colour are all consideredpermissible for women, but not formen. Below this level are somecultural choices and this may come asa second level. But what is

important is that Islam promotesunique identity for Muslims inevery action and this applies to thedress code. So, Islam encouragesthe dress code which representsthe message of Islam, and whichdistinguishes Muslims from others.

Q. I reverted to Islam but I havenot been praying. It was likelosing interest due to lazinessand depression. But now I feelguilty for not praying. I feelAllah is getting me back, butmay be I have sinned toomuch. What is your advise?

A. You are very fortunate that youhave realized that you should startpraying. As for having sinned toomuch, we wouldn’t know aboutthat but rest assured that Allah’sMercy is far greater than your sins. The cure is excessive repentanceand seeking Allah’s forgiveness.Thecure matches the illness. There arethree conditions of repentance: (1)To stop committing the sin. (2) Oneshould sincerely express remorse andregret on perpetrating the sin. (3) Oneshould make intention never to repeatthe sin.

The Prophet said:Allah Ta’alahas said: O Son of Adam, were yoursins to reach the clouds in the skyand were you then to askforgiveness of Me, I shall forgive

you. (Tirmizi)

Q. I attended a ComparativeReligion Debate and I becamemore than convinced thatIslam is the true religion. I wantto embrace it but my parentsare very much against the ideaas well as my relatives who arevery scornful to me. I have notargued with them. What isyour advise?

A. When a person believes insomething, he/she will be preparedto make sacrifices for its sake, sohow about if this is Tawheed orbelief in Allah Alone. Hurtful wordsfrom relatives are difficult to bear, worse than a blow from a weapon, but that will become insignificantfor one who bears in mind thegreatness of Allah and His reward, and he will continue on his pathwithout turning away or hesitating. You have done well by not arguingwith your parents becauserespecting parents is part of Islam. If you treat people kindly, you willwin them over in the end and youwill not be rejected, Insha-Allah.Do not delay entering Islam, do notwait a moment longer. Allah takescare of us and we should entrustourselves to His will. When we aretrue believers, we view everydevelopment in our life as good. Aprayer or supplication that helps

to overcome depression andworries should be addressed tothe causes of the depression itself. The Prophet taught us that weshould pray according to thesituation we find ourselves in.There are, in addition, prayers andsupplications which the ProphetMuhammad himself used. Oneof these, which is relevant here, isthis: Allahumma innee a’udhu bikamina al-hamm wal hazan wa a’ udhubika mina al-’ajzi wa al-kasal wal al-jubun wa al-bukhl wa ghalabati al-dayni wa qahri al-rrijaa. ( O Allah, Iseek refuge in You from worry, depression, helplessness, sloth, cowardice, niggardliness, and theburden of debts and domineeringmen).Furthermore, you shouldbear in mind that reading theNoble Qur’an, making Zikr(supplications), observing yourreligious duties, steering clear ofwhat is prohibited, and doing goodhelp one get rid of depression.
