A Message From Pastor Doug Learned

Your Invitation to Become a Member of

The Moorings Presbyterian ChurchOur Next Membership Inquiry Class is Sunday, January 19 (note this change) at 11:30 AM in Moss Hall. Breakfast is provided. Members will be recognized on Sunday, January 26 at 10:00 AM worship. You may contact Jana ([email protected]) or (213-5233) to express your interest in learning more about our church. You may also indicate your interest on the Friendship Pad or at the Kiosk on Sunday mornings.

In just a few days I, along with members of our congregation, will be leaving for Guatemala to visit the Jim Smith School, which was constructed with donations from our congregation and opened in June of 2001 in Balcones de Palin. The school was named in memory of the former beloved chairman of Moorings’ mission committee, and serves poor children in the makeshift housing community constructed for those who lost their homes in that area during Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

You may remember that Rene Valiente, whose family members and other partners in ministry serve the people of Balcones, visited us in worship on Sunday, December 8 to update us on their progress and to thank our congregation for scholarships that our members provide for the children of the school.

I count myself blessed to follow in the footsteps of MPC members who have traveled to experience God’s work through

our ministry partnerships in Guatemala. I also look forward to updating Jim Smith’s family and our congregation on current ministries there, and possible ministry for us to engage in for the future.

Readers’ RendezvousWednesday, January 8 10:00 AM in Strozier Library

All are invited to join us as Valerie Johnston reviews the best seller Mind over Medicine by Lissa Rankin, M.D. We encourage reading the book beforehand in order to join in a meaningful discussion.

Using extraordinary cases of spontaneous healing, Dr. Rankin shows how thoughts, feelings and beliefs can alter the body’s physiology. She lays out the scientific data proving that loneliness, pessimism, depression, fear, and anxiety damage the body, while intimate relationships, gratitude, meditation, and authentic self-expression flip on the body’s self-healing processes. Refreshments are served.

Distinguished Speaker Series Author and Editor Karl Weber presents

Lincoln’s Christian VisionThursday, January 23 ● 6:30 PM Catered Dinner ● 7:00 Program

Abraham Lincoln grappled with the issues of slavery and freedom, war and peace, and the proper use of presidential power in the context of our nation’s greatest moral and political crisis. His second inaugural address revealed much about the evolution of his thinking during the final weeks of his life. Karl Weber will discuss Lincoln’s Christian vision, based in part on the chapter he wrote for the book Lincoln, A President For The Ages, a companion to the Oscar-winning movie Lincoln directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Daniel Day-Lewis, which he edited.

Karl Weber, president of Karl Weber Literary, is a writer, editor, and book developer with more than 25 years’ experience in the book publishing industry. He is an expert in general-interest non-fiction publishing, specializing in topics from business and personal finance to politics, current affairs, history, autobiography, self-help, and personal development.

Preschool News

The winter season is approaching the Moorings Preschool. winter activities will soon be turning the preschool into a winter wonderland.

The two-year-old classes will hold a Popsicle picnic and paint their own versions of snowmen with different mediums. The basic language concepts associated with “opposites” will also be the focus in the two-year-old classes. The three -year-olds will make funky mittens and learn the basic concepts of pairs and

matching. They will also learn about winter animal habitats and create their own “forest habitat.” Our four-year-old classes will learn about the difference between northern and southern winters and hold an Antarctic expedition.

A reminder to all church members and friends that registration for the 2014-2015 school year will be taking place at the end of January. If your child’s name is not on our waiting list, please contact the preschool office (649-1811, or [email protected]) at your earliest convenience.
