The Blessed Lord said :

O , blameless one , in this world a twofold way of life has been taught of yore by Me , the

path of knowledge for men of contemplation and that of works for men of action.

Karma and Jnana have a definite correlation. Action and work (karma) is essential for surviv-

al. Jnana (knowledge and wisdom) guides us in our work and action (karma).For knowledge

is absolute truth and this truth must be sole objective of any work.

The conflict in our inner self is due to desire, ego and personal ambitions. All these have cer-

tain negative elements and restrict our freedom of thought and action. The quest for peace and

self-realization then takes a back seat. Quest for knowledge is driven out. Life then moves

along the narrow lanes defined by self-aggrandizement.

For a wise person, with knowledge the concept of karma (work) is clear. He works selflessly,

without any expectation. No premium is attached to the outcomes of work he does. He is con-

tent in the knowledge that utmost effort and sincerity has been put in and that to in a joyous

state. He is fearless as results do not affect him. Peace is then a natural corollary.

To practice this is difficult. But we must resolve our own inner conflicts.

gul, was the guest speaker on this oc-

casion. The second session, an excit-

Interact District Council organized "Mid

Term Meet" on 14th January 2016 at St Jo-

seph& Mary's School, New Alipore. SCIS In-

teract Club was represented by Avik Chakraborty, Avishek Dutta andArkaDatta

and Ms. Dolly Chowdhury (Teacher coordinator). The Meet was presided over by

Rtn. Mousumi Bhattacharya, DICC. The brief welcome was followed by motivating

speeches by Chief Guest, PGD UtpalMajumdar and Chief Speaker, PGD Amitava

Mukherjee . The list of District Representatives was disclosed. SCIS Interact Club

will hereinafter be represented by Avik Chakraborty and Yashassvi Periwal at the

District level. The members and the teacher Coordinators shared their upcoming

projects and discussed the projects completed so far. Finally an invigorating quiz

contest was held in which the members and the teacher coordinators participated

with great enthusiasm.

Acting Together on Climate Change Post COP 21” Conducted by US-Consul

General Craig L.Hall

A total of seven city schools participated in this workshop and it commenced with an

opening song and dance presented by the host school (Modern High School for Girls),

which was followed by a welcome speech by Mrs. Devi Kar (Director of Modern High

School for Girls). The students of the host school sang Rabindra sangeet in which

Mrs. Hall ,wife of US Consul General showed her musical skill by joining them.

Mr. Hall addressed over 200 students, in which he stated that Kolkata’s percentage

of air pollution is often worse than that of Delhi. Experts say ,vehicles mainly the die-

sel ones ,are primarily responsible for releasing pollutants into the air.

We received important and relevant information from Mr. Hall.

The US embassy in Delhi and the consulate in Kolkata have equipment to measure the

quality of air and the pollutants present in air. Hall concluded his speech by stating

that the responsibility to find solution lay in the hands of this generation.

The 6th session of the Human Rights Workshop was con-

ducted in two sessions. The first session of the 6th module

was conducted on 19th January 2016. Mayank Goel present-

ed slides on 'Propaganda Tomorrow'.

The second session of the 6th module was conducted on 22nd

January2016. It commenced with recapitulation of what was

done in all the earlier sessions . Sourasis Ghosh, Upal Maji,

Raina Ezaz and Yashassvi Periwal presented slides

on 'Propaganda Now' and how propaganda influences us -

through media and we all are victims of propaganda.

Nyla Nigar Sadi, Varij Khanna, Anupriya Chatterjee,

Jayshree Somnath presented 'Propaganda Then'. They pre-

sented on how posters used to play a major role before the

introduction of social media.

Interact Club

ILEAD had invited students of SCIS to view a documentary on Bangladesh

Liberation War on 7th of January 2016. The other schools present there were

G.D. Birla and Ashok Hall Group of schools. All the three sections of Class

VIII were fortunate enough to get the opportunity to watch it. They were ac-

companied by Ms. LipikaPyne, Mr. Binod Kumar Das ,Mr. Keith Mandrelle

and Ms. Dolly Chowdhury. The film delved deep into this significant part of

history, the images of the struggles and obstacles that were faced by the sol-

diers along with the strategical help received from India. Historical moments

of the past with crisp narration kept all glued to their seats. It helped the stu-

dents to understand how the freedom and independence of Bangladesh was

won through determination and faith. The documentary carried a message

back home that behind the story of heroism and courage lay a lot of sacrifice,

pain and anguish.

On 27th January 2016, Ms. Sushmita Basu accompanied by two stu-

dents went to Calcutta International School for Inter School Hu-

manities Meet on Politics of Images. There was a total eleven par-

ticipating schools along with the host school. Five topics were given

out. They were: A.) images and nationality. B. )images and your past. C.) images- how

they are responsible for moulding our present lives. D.) popular images – influencers

& trendsetters. E. )images and gender issues. Our students chose– popular images –

influencers & trendsetters. The Chief Guests at this competition were Mr. Avirup Sen,

an eminent journalist and Mr. Utsav Mukherjee, a well known film maker. The judges

were Ms. Sudeshna Sengupta and Dr. Madhusudhan Nandi. The competition com-

menced with Principal’s speech, felicitation of the Chief Guest, address by the Chief

Guest, introduction of the judges and a musical recital. As rightly stated by Mr. Avirup

Sen ,politics is nothing but homogeneous group and different images tell different sto-

ries. Even Mr. Utsav Mukherjee, stressed on images as it is the window to reality.

Photography is viewing different perspectives. On the concluding note ,the judges gave

a brief account on the preparation of a presentation .The students have benefitted a

lot and it was really an excellent learning experience.

Ms Trisha and Mr Nirmalya from University of

Buckingham conducted a career counselling ses-

sion in our school for students of Class XI.

The session started at 10.40 am and continued

for an hour.

It was conducted in the AV Room .

Brochures and flyers were given out to the stu-

dents for future reference.

An Interactive Session with writer / actress Ms Nandana Sen

On 27th January 2016, a few students of Grade V&VI of South City International School, along with two teachers , Mrs. Sudha Volz and Mrs. Sonali

Chakravarty went to La Martiniere for girls to attend an interactive session with the writer/ actress Ms Nandana Sen on her book “Mambi and the forest

fire”. Ms Nandana Sen, shared her thoughts and experiences about the importance of reading . She said that without reading one does not grow up . In

this session she organized certain activities for children which the students thoroughly enjoyed. A video was shown and questions related to the story were

asked. She brought the story alive by making the students enact certain parts of the story. The students also got the opportunity to ask quite a few ques-

tions to Ms Nandana Sen regarding her book and what inspired her to be an author . Finally Ms Nandana Sen shared a couple of anecdotes. Related to

her life and career.On the whole it was an interesting and an enriching experience for all of us.

CAREER GUIDANCE SESSION BY REPRESENTATIVE FROM

UNIVERSITY OF FORDHAM

On 27th of January 2016 Dr Biswa Bhoumik from University of Fordham , New York

visited South City International School to conduct a career guidance session for Class

IX students. He discussed in length about the United States-its history, people settle-

ment and education. He spoke about the leading colleges of USA and the courses of-

fered by them. The students found the session very enriching and informative.

TIVES FROM ACADEMY OF ART UNIVERSITY

Ms. Gladys Perint Palmer ,Executive Vice President, Department

of Artistic Development ,Academy of Art University, San Francis-

co visited South city International School on 29th of January

2016 ,to conduct an interactive career guidance session for our

senior students. She was accompanied by Mr Aaron Cardazo,

Outreach Representative from the University. The most exciting

part was live sketch session by Ms Palmer where she sketched ex-

cellent portraits of some of our students and our senior school

parent representative and renowned film artist Ms Ekavali Khan-

na. Mr Cardazo gave all the details about the University, courses

offered, fee structure and many technical details related to admis-

sion in the University and other US colleges.

Ms Swati Sengupta, an author of books for the young, visited SCIS on 14th January 2016. She held a reading

session of her latest book 'Half the Field is Mine' at South City International School auditorium.

Ms Swati Sengupta studied English Literature at Jadavpur University, Kolkata. She is a journalist and author of books for the young. Ms.

Sengupta loves to read, dream, travel and bake. She lives in Kolkata with her husband and seven-year-old son, but keeps wandering off alone

into villages and small towns of India. 'Half the Field is Mine' is her third book.

The author smashes gender stereotypes in the book through a sensitive narrative of a mixed football team. Two girls, divided by a wide social

and economic chasm, become friends and bond over football. “The germ of the story originated while interacting with my son with whom I

often play football. I realized that how we conform to certain social constructs, like boys and girls cannot play in one team," said Swati. The

extracts from the book left the 250- odd students at the reading session spellbound.

An interactive session with Ms. Swati Sengupta, the author of ‘Half the Field is Mine’

Photography Club students and teachers got an excellent opportunity to listen to and interact with legendary Photographer

Raghu Rai and other eminent judges of the Camarena Photography Competition Grand Finale which was held in SCIS Audi-

torium on 31st of January 2016. The day long annual event of Camarena Academy was a very unique experience as best pho-

tographs of the competitors and also of judges were shown as a slide show. It was a wonderful and inspiring experience for

all. Photography Club students have been requested to be part of the competition in the next year.

Students were asked to draw or sketch any heritage monument of Kolkata. This was followed by a short essay about the need for con-

servation and preservation of heritage monuments. The students of our school have selected the Tipu Sultan Masjid on Prince Anwar

Shah Road.

As the students were mid way in their work, the Chief Guest Mr. Debasis Kumar ,Mayor Council of KMC (Parks and Garden) arrived

and addressed them. Then the students along with the Mayor took part in cleaning the Princep Memorial.

This is to be followed up by the School Monitor, Wrik Karmakar who had to submit a report of 400-500 words on our selected heritage

monument, Tipu Sultan Mosque. This has to be topped with two photographs and submitted by the 12thFebruary 2016.

The Swiss Arts Council brought in an

art installation based on the classic fair-

ytale Hansel and Gretel during the Kol-

kata Literary Meet on 25th and 27th of

January 2016 at SCIS Auditorium. HG

The annual picnic venue for the Pre-Primary students this year was Prince-

ton Club! Children had fun playing games in the lawn they even watched a

film. This was followed by munching french fries, cakes and cookies.

On 23rd January SYMPHONY AND EXPRESSION COMPETITION was held at Vidhyabharti school conducted by Bharat Scouts and

Guide. 10 Bulbuls took part in different activities . Out Of 10 Bulbuls 6 bulbuls got prize in different activities.

On the 19th of January, 2016, all the sections of

Class IV set up a shop in the Primary section gar-

den, selling herbal products. The children made in-

formative and colourful projects named ‘HERBAL

WAY TO HEALTH’ and named the shop ‘HERBS

THAT SERVE’. Herbal products like soap, cough

syrups, creams toothpastes and many more were

made by the students from empty bottles, toothpaste

tubes and soap boxes to set up the soap. A cash

counter with fake currencies was set up for the buy-

ing and selling process to take place.

All classes and teachers went round the shop to watch the products and got infor-

mation about herbs that have been the life and heritage of our country for so many

thousands of years.

All the sections of class IV bought and sold the products and this gave the children

an exciting way of learning about the importance of herbs, staying healthy, working

together in groups and also learning about managing money. The children and the

teachers, Anjali Ma’am, Sarita Ma’am and Sanchita Ma’am had a wonderful expe-

rience.

Roller Inline Skating Championship 2016.He will represent West Bengal in

SAHIL STORM DESTROYS SOUTH AFRICA

On the 7th of January 2016 ,Alberton Cricket Club of South Africa played a T20 cricket match

against our school at our school ground. . Scis won the toss and elected to field .With a track rec-

ord of an unbeaten run of 4 matches, beating teams like Don Bosco( Park Circus), Sahapur Sport-

ing Club, Sourav Ganguly’s Cricket Academy( Videocon) and Heritage School, the South African

team batted first a mammoth 215-7 in their allotted 20 overs. Joshua scored a hundred for the vis-

tors. For SCIS Abhimanyu Sharma, Dev Sharma and Aditya Mishra got 2 wickets each while Ash-

jot Singh Anand took 1 wicket. SCIS started the chase with Aman Bajaj and Anjani Lohia opening

the batting .They took the score to 60 before 3 wicket fell in one over, and SCIS was looking down

the barrel at 60-3. In walked Captain Sahil Firoz and his intensions clear by carting the South Af-

rican bowlers to all over the ground. Anjani and Sahil put on 89 runs for the fourth wicket part-

nership before Anjani left with the score at 149. Anjani Lohia scored 60 runs in 34 balls with 7

fours and 4 huge sixes. Aditya Misrha joined Sahil Firoz and both of them stitched together a 5th

wicket partnership of 70 runs in 6 overs and saw SCIS through. The minnows SCIS scored thump-

ing 6 wicket over the South African giants. Such was the impact of Sahil’s onslaught on the South

African bowlers that they could not recover till the end, and when they finally recovered the dam-

age was already being done. Sahil Firoz remained unbeaten on 95 runs in only 44 balls with the

help of 9 sweetly timed fours and 7 towering 6’s. This innings even would have made AB de villiers

proud. Scis cricket team is the only team to beat Alberton Cricket Club in Kolkata whichcreated

history in school. This victory signifies the dawn of a new era in SCIS.

Linc, one of our very favourite pen and pencil partners, organized a spelling competition across schools every year. For its

17th year this time ,Linc visited South City International School on 29th of January 2016. The competition was held for

Classes VII and VIII only and all the students took part. The competition had two rounds where the first round picked out

the best 12 from seven sections. A second round was conducted which brought us to our two winners -Spriha Pal (1st) and

Uma Sarkar (2nd) from Class VIII B. They are going to participate in the state finale in April.

The workshop began an hour late as the resource person

was delayed at the Kolkata Literary Meet.

It was an engaging workshop where the resource person

Luke Kennard managed to keep the students attention

and participation levels consistently high. They were giv-

en prompts by way of single words, single lines to begin

with, ending words or themes. In some cases they were

given an arrangement of lines in form of couplets. Mr.

Kennard also shared an example of Russian poetry and

how the poets were unable to express any kind of discon-

tentment in their poems.

Students came up (in the limited time frame set) with

touching stories in their poems. Each student had to read

out his/her poem at the end of the session.

Among the other participating schools were Birla High,

The Heritage School, Akshar and Future Home. Refresh-

ments were served at the venue.

The Book Club motivates the kids to read more and discover through a

out the synopsis of a book ‘Ballet Sto-

ries’ retold by Lisa Church from the

classic originals, during the Assembly in

the Auditorium.

This is the ninth Book Review read out

in the Primary School Assembly.

This book has a fantastic collection of

twirling ballerina stories for girls.

Drawn from the world of ballet, these

enchanting stories are filled with unfor-

gettable characters from well-known

fairy tales like; Cinderella, The Sleep-

ing Beauty, Coppelia, Swan Lake, The

Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling,

The Firebird and The Nutcracker.

dancing and adventure!

On Thursday, 14th January 2016,

read out the synopsis of a book “The

This is the tenth Book Review read out in the Primary

School Assembly.

The Achiever House ( Primary School) presented an as-

sembly on PEACE, the day school re-opened just after the

Winter Vacation. The assembly focused on the importance

of spreading peace in the world and learning to forgive

each other.

On the 7th of January, 2016, Class IV A presented an assembly on ‘Integrity’.

The class put up a skit which projected the importance of integrity in one’s life

and that it depends on trust, openness and honesty. The skit tried to bring

about a realization in the minds of the young learners that nothing is at last sa-

cred but the integrity of one’s own mind.
