A YEAR IN REVIEW by Adam Hoover

Dear Members,

They say time goes by faster as you get older, so I must be getting pretty old! It seems like just yesterday that we were planning for our golden 50th Anniversary Year, and now 2016 is in the rear-view mirror. But allow me to stop time for a bit to reminisce. Fifty years ago, the Newport Beach Tennis Club was envisioned to be the “Forest Hills of the West.” Invigorated with that image, developer George Holstein with President Larry Johnson ambitiously sought out the Irvine Company, who owned the 7.5 acres of land above Upper Newport Bay. After much negotiating on Johnson’s part, the design for a tennis paradise was underway. By 1966, the Newport Beach Tennis Club opened its doors to the public and signed on Rockin’ Rod Laver as the head touring pro and the rest, as they say, is history.

Norman Peale said there is real magic in enthusiasm. It spells the difference between mediocrity and accomplishment. In our 50 years, we have accomplished so much on the heels of our members and staff enthusiasm and love for NBTC. Just a few of the many tournaments we have hosted and taken an integral part in our success include: The 1977 Davis Cup and Ladies Professional Tournament, The International Cup in the 60’s, numerous Pro-Ams featuring World Class Pros, The Pacific Southwest and National Father Son Tournaments, Choc, the 300,000 High Stakes Tournament, the Legends Tour in the 90’s, and most recently, World Team Tennis, Michael Chang Tennis Classic, Top Gun Tennis and the Queen of Hearts Foundation Tournaments.

Let’s not forget that in our storied history, the Newport Beach Tennis Club has also been called home by both celebrities and tennis pros alike. Playing at the club in the 60’s were some of the greatest male players in history, like Rod Laver, Pancho Gonzales, Arthur Ashe, and Roy Emerson, who won 12 major singles titles and had a tournament named after him. In later years, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, Pete Sampras, Michael Chang, Lindsay Davenport, Madison Keyes, Leander Paes and currently, tennis legends and staff pros Scott Davis Rick Leach and Jill Craybas have all called NBTC home.

Our Founding Fathers created a tennis and swim world class haven built on friendship, good competitive spirit, family activites and fun. When I look to 2016, I recognize that it was a rollercoaster ride that saw us reach a certain pinnacle of success. From the 50th Anniversary Gala where the city recognized our accomplishments, to the World Team Tennis, which saw pro tennis return to NBTC in a big way, we came together to create a special and engaging environment for our members. Who could forget all the club stories that filled our most lofty rafters in 2016? The twice a year Calcuttas had their own special drama as they always seem to do, and June’s infamous Wine Tasting Party saw the Those Guys Band rock the night away to the members delight. We can’t forget about the Member Appreciation Party or the Christmas Tree Ball, where we served over 200 members with a sit down dinner perfectly complimented with the great Jimmy Hopper.

I reminisce about how special the Tree Lighting ceremony turned out, our fabulous Brunches, all the social activities and the Junior Tennis and Swim programs that have positively affected our next generation. In 2016, we also shed tears when Eric Tobiessen left our lives far too early, and we still think about his laughter and love for life to this day.

To those original charter members who have been with us forall these years, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you to Carole Johnson, who dedicated her life to the betterment of NBTC. Without her love, NBTC would not be (continued pg. 4)

where it is today. Thank you to the tireless efforts of our managers and staff, who have been so great all year long: the events: Hector Acosta, Carrie Perkins, Christian Warner, and all the Court Directors, Front Desk, and Maintenance who work so hard to create a first class facility and atmosphere of warmth in keeping with the NBTC’s original vision. In 2016, we said goodbye to membership director and tennis manager Heather Nalle, whose creativity helped spur NBTC’s success in 2016. She taught us many lessons, but most importantly, that anything is possible.

Additionally, I’d especially like to acknowledge the members who led our weekly member-group matches. Thank you to the captains of our ladies leagues, Tim White for MCing our events, and to Jeannine Sandling for her role as Ladies League Liaison. Thank you to singles ladder commissioner Paul Kincaid, Dennis Claus for his work in leading the Grand Prix tournaments, Mike Hamrock for his invaluable photography and 50th anniversary sculpture support, the Advisory board and their expert recommendations, and Eddie Promm for running the Sunday Grand Prix League. Congratulations to all of our club champions and Calcutta winners, and a heartfelt thank you to the entire

LADIES LEAGUES by Jeannine Sandling

A YEAR IN REVIEW continued

The holiday season gave the ladies leagues a rest from compe-tition. I noticed many teams organized round robin play to keep their skills sharp for the start of the second half. Many players also participated in the Jingle Bell Round Robin in early Decem-ber. Everyone was adorned in festive holiday attire and a great time was had by all. We also collected blankets for the homeless that were distributed on Christmas Eve.

As we enter the second half of play, I would like to talk about good sports-manship. We all have that occasional opponent who just gets under your skin from the get go. You know the one, they always have to win

the warm up and talk with their partner non stop. When the match starts you begin to think if I could just hit them with an overhead that I’ll feel so much better!!! If instead we were able to kill them with kindness and show good sportsmanship the match will most likely go in your favor.

Now for a note to all the captains. With the wet winter weather we have been experiencing, please schedule any make up matches promptly to assure the club has court availability. Also, you should be checking a week ahead of time when you have a home match to ensure the courts have in fact been booked.

Stay tuned next month for some team results. Questions? Email me at [email protected]

membership for your support and guidance in 2016.

Thinking about NBTC’s 50 years of rich history and tradition puts me in a reflective mode in my own life. On my last day at an internship another lifetime ago, my boss wrote the following words to me, “You will do great things in your life. Always remember to Lean in and Let go.” So here at NBTC, we will continue to take risks, to strive to make the impossible possible, to work hard day in and day out to create an environment to foster friendship, family and fun, and to upgrade the facility to provide that world class facility that our forefathers envisioned. We thank you and look forward to providing once again a first class club for you in 2017, and once again, we thank you for your membership. ~ Adam Hoover
