As I was falling asleep on Christmas Eve, I would strain to hear the sound of reindeer hooves on the roof. When I was a kid, Christmas was a very, very exciting day. We had a traditional, white, middle-class Christmas Day. The pile of gifts under the tree appeared enormous. We kids opened presents in our pajamas then spent the rest of the day playing with our cousins and our new toys while my grandmother and mother readied the Christmas feast. I stuffed myself with turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, and pie (all homemade) then went to bed sleepy and satisfied. When I was a kid, the day after Christmas felt like the biggest let down of the year. 364 days until next Christmas. At least my birthday was in April. April wasn’t so terribly far away, I reasoned. As an adult, I have come to appreciate more and more the season of Christmas. The preparations for December 25th are finished. We have completed much of our shopping, cooking, baking, entertaining, and visiting. Yet, the festive lights, colorful decorations, and joyous procla- mation of Emmanuel, God With Us continue. Epiphany is a fancy word that basically means an appearance of God. There are many epiphanies related in the Scripture. The one we see most often represented this time of year is the visit of the magi to see Jesus. Nativity scenes usually include three “wise men” by the manger. In reality, the visit of the wise men was probably several months (if not years) after Jesus’ actual birth. Jesus’ visitors from the east traveled by foot, setting out only when they saw the star over Bethlehem. Sometimes God acts in a decisive event like the birth of Jesus. The implications of that event unfold over time like the twelve days of Christmas. The season of Christmas has taught me that it ain’t over until it’s over. I would like to expand on the words from the above article. I never heard much about the celebration of the season of Epiphany, until I attended Duke Divinity School and the UMC church started really emphasizing the seasons of the church year. My dad married again when I was preparing to enter the 10th grade. My brothers and I moved to a new town, a new school, a new house or new to us, and a new church, with a new mom, after being with our grandmother for nine years. We started attending a United Methodist Church and I do not remember the Epiphany being em- phasized that much. The above article however, reminds us of the appearance of the Wise Men ( Magi) who brought gifts to Jesus. Scholars tell us this took place when Jesus was around two years old. They brought these gifts to remind the world that the birth of the Savior was a miracle that would affect generations. The new year begins! What appearances of Jesus in our lives will empower us to use our gifts to bring the good news to all those waiting to receive the "King of Kings." A Word from the Pastor

It Ain’t Over ’til It’s Over By Molly Shivers

When I was a kid, it seemed like Christmas Day would never come. I remember the excitement every morning of opening a new win-

dow on my paper Advent calendar. I would crease back the paper flap to uncover the tiny picture inside, knowing that we were one day closer to

the glorious reveal of the presents under the Christmas tree. As I was falling asleep on Christmas Eve, I would strain to hear the sound of reindeer

hooves on the roof. When I was a kid, Christmas was a very, very exciting day. We had a traditional, white, middle-class Christmas Day. The

pile of gifts under the tree appeared enormous. We kids opened presents in our pajamas then spent the rest of the day playing with our cousins and

our new toys while my grandmother and mother readied the Christmas feast. I stuffed myself with turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, and pie (all

homemade) then went to bed sleepy and satisfied. When I was a kid, the day after Christmas felt like the biggest let down of the year. 364 days

until next Christmas. At least my birthday was in April. April wasn’t so terribly far away, I reasoned. When I was a kid, I did not know that

Christmas was more than one day. I did not know that Christmas was (and is) twelve days, to be exact. Christmas is a season.

As an adult, I have come to appreciate more and more the season of Christmas. The preparations for December 25th are finished. We

have completed much of our shopping, cooking, baking, entertaining, and visiting. Yet, the festive lights, colorful decorations, and joyous procla-

mation of Emmanuel, God With Us continue. The season of Christmas is actually the more correct time to sing all the carols and songs that we

have heard on the radio and in stores since well before Thanksgiving. While other are shopping the post-Christmas sales, feel free to crank up

“Hark, the Herald Angels Sing” and “Angels We Have Heard on High.” If you are in a more contemplative mood, perhaps “O Little Town of

Bethlehem” or “In the Bleak Midwinter” will suit. There are twelve days to revel in the great interruption God has made in human history by

coming in the form of a baby.

We mark the end of the Christmas season with Epiphany. Epiphany is a fancy word that basically means an appearance of God. There

are many epiphanies related in the Scripture. The one we see most often represented this time of year is the visit of the magi to see Jesus. Nativity

scenes usually include three “wise men” by the manger. In reality, the visit of the wise men was probably several months (if not years) after Jesus’

actual birth. Jesus’ visitors from the east traveled by foot, setting out only when they saw the star over Bethlehem.

Sometimes God acts in a decisive event like the birth of Jesus. The implications of that event unfold over time like the twelve days of

Christmas. The season of Christmas has taught me that it ain’t over until it’s over.

I would like to expand on the words from the above article. I never heard much about the celebration of the season of Epiphany, until I attended

Duke Divinity School and the UMC church started really emphasizing the seasons of the church year. My dad married again when I was preparing

to enter the 10th grade. My brothers and I moved to a new town, a new school, a new house or new to us, and a new church, with a new mom,

after being with our grandmother for nine years. We started attending a United Methodist Church and I do not remember the Epiphany being em-

phasized that much. The above article however, reminds us of the appearance of the Wise Men ( Magi) who brought gifts to Jesus. Scholars tell

us this took place when Jesus was around two years old. They brought these gifts to remind the world that the birth of the Savior was a miracle

that would affect generations. The new year begins! What appearances of Jesus in our lives will empower us to use our gifts to bring the good

news to all those waiting to receive the "King of Kings."

The staff of Pilmoor Preschool would like to wish the Pilmoor Congregation a

very Happy New Year! For the month of January, the preschool will be

celebrating with their annual Penguin Day, when the children of the preschool

learn all about our flightless, cold weather dwelling friends, the penguins! The

students will dress like penguins, play snow-themed games, eat penguin-

themed food (like Goldfish crackers), and make penguin crafts.

Pilmoor Preschool will also be opening enrollment for the 2018-2019 school

year during the month of February. Members of Pilmoor Memorial United

Methodist Church can enroll their children beginning Monday, February 12,

2018. Open enrollment for the general public begins Monday, February 19,

2018. Please share the registration information with friends and family who

are searching for a kind, Godly, loving, and fun learning environment for their

children.

For further information, please contact the church office at 232-2136.

In December the Congregation was invited to help spread Christmas cheer

to our shut-ins caroling. We spread Christmas cheer to 6 families. Nurture handed out goodie bags at the Christmas Eve Service and helped the congregation celebrate the birth of Baby Jesus with a birthday cake at the morning service. The Missions Angel Tree helped 10 families during Christmas. The next Nurture, Missions & Outreach meeting will be held on January 25th @ 6:30pm.

The youth group hopes that everyone had a great Christmas! The youth meetings will continue for the new year starting January 7th at 5pm. We encourage all youth grades 3-12 to join us on Sunday nights!

Leola Hall Circle News

Hello all, we hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and on to a Happy New Year!! On January 17 the two women’s

groups will co-host a Wednesday Evening Fellowship dinner. We will be serving BBQ w/roll, the women will prepare

side dishes and desserts. Please come join us for a night of great fellowship and good food!

The Leola Hall Circle delivered our Secret Santa project the week before Christmas. We delivered presents and

Christmas dinner with all the fixings and desserts for a family of four in our community. It was a great success on all

sides. What a blessing!

Mark your calendars!!!The Annual Cake Auction is scheduled for Wednesday, March 28th. I know that seems like a

long way off but as fast as time flies, it will be here in no time.

We had a wonderful Christmas luncheon at the Olive Garden, we were able to have Mae Marie Moseley and Carolyn

Davis join us and even Pastor Jerry Cribb came along! It was a really nice time for fellowship together. I included a

couple pictures below.
