National Western Stock Show
The National Western Stock Show has been
held every January at the National Western
Complex in Denver, Colorado since 1906.
Its purpose was to demonstrate better
breeding and feeding techniques to area
stockmen.
The founders included Elias M. Ammons,
President of the Colorado Cattle and Horse
Growers Association and later Governor of
Colorado, George Bailentine, general
manager Of the Denver Union Stock Yard
Company and Fred P. Johnson, publisher of
The Record Stockman.
Since first held in 1906, it has become the
World’s largest stock show by number of
animals and offers the world’s only pen
and cattle show.
Stock Show Trivia
1. 705,574 people attended the stock show
in 2018.
2. The still-standing amount paid at
auction for a Hereford bull in 1981 was
$ 301,000.
3. In 1915 the stock show was canceled
due to “a hoof and mouth” disease epidemic.
4. The holiday lights don’t come down until
after the Stock show.
Tournament of Roses
Parade
In 1890,Valley Hunt Club members, led by
Charles Frederick Holder, sponsored the
first tournament of roses.
The abundance of flowers, even in the
midst of winter, prompted the club to add a
parade before the completion, where
entrants would decorate carriages with
hundredsof colorful blooms.
“In New York, people are buried in snow”
announced professor Charles F. Holder at a
club meeting. “Here our flowers are
blooming and our oranges are about to bear.
Let’s hold a festival to tell the world about
our paradise.”
More than a century late, the parade floats
are a marvel of state of the art technology,
all tucked away beneath flowers and other
natural materials. Every New Year visitors
experience the beauty of the floral floats
along with spirited marching bands and
high stepping equestrian units along the
five and half mile route down Colorado
Boulevard.
