2021 JANUARY When I asked a variety of staf members to give me one word that summarized 2020 for them, I received quite a variety of responses ranging from thoughtful silence to emotional musings (yes, we will call them musings). A surprise from these conversations was hearing people share their personal stories of challenge and triumph, heartbreak and loss. But overall, there was a common theme of laughter. One observation I have made is that though we have been challenged in every possible way this year, we have kept our sense of humor, and it has served us well now more than ever. At Arbor Acres, we have risen to the challenge and not only survived, we have thrived as a community. We have leaned into each other, taken stock of the priorities in our lives, and perhaps cultivated a new appreciation for those things that previously seemed mundane. For example, the fowers and blooms have been magnifcent this year! The sky shone one of the most beautiful hues of blue and there seemed to be birds chirping everywhere. It’s almost as if creation was ofering us a picture of hope, a reminder that these challenges will pass, and an encouragement for us to see the amazingness in each of our days. As we enter 2021, I hope we will enter this year with enthusiasm and optimism, as though hearing a whisper of the wonderful things to come; shouldn’t that be our focus no matter the trials we face? Though we may be tempted to look through a lens of skepticism as we battle weariness, let this be a time of personal growth and refection. Share an encouraging word, send that letter, call that friend, and be kind to yourself and others. As Mother Theresa said, “Spread love everywhere you go; let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” May that be our goal for 2021; spread kindness like confetti. Happy 2021! -Suzy Vaile

2021 JANUARY

When I asked a variety of staff members to give me one word that summarized 2020 for them, I received quite a variety of responses ranging from thoughtful silence to emotional musings (yes, we will call them musings). For example, the flowers and blooms have been

magnificent this year! The sky shone one of the most beautiful hues of blue and there seemed to be birds chirping everywhere. It’s almost as if creation was offering us a picture of hope, a reminder that these challenges will pass, and an encouragement for us to see the amazingness in each of our days. As we enter 2021, I hope we will enter this year with enthusiasm and optimism, as though hearing a whisper of the wonderful things to come; shouldn’t that be our focus no matter the trials we face? Though we may be tempted to look through a lens of skepticism as we battle weariness, let this be a time of personal growth and reflection. Share an encouraging word, send that letter, call that friend, and be kind to yourself and others. As Mother Theresa said, “Spread love everywhere you go; let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” May that be our goal for 2021; spread kindness like confetti. Happy 2021!

New Books in the LibraryIn the newly donated Anne Tyler novel, Redhead

by the Side of the Road (FIC TYL), the redhead turns out to be what the NPR review calls a “metaphor” for the main character, Micah Mortimer, and his inability to see his life clearly. Mortimer is a tech geek who is clueless about social relationships. He is content until a possible son shows up, and his girlfriend walks out. If you are in the mood for a good beach book give The Mother-in-Law by Sally Hepworth (FIC HEP) a try. It showed up on many "best book of April" lists, including Oprah's. The book opens with the death of the title character. Readers learn that the relationships in the family are complicated, and that it might be possible that the death was not a suicide after all. Full of twists and turns, it is definitely not the typical mother-in-law story.
