ARISE Dear Parishioners,

Beginning the week of October 2nd, nearly half the parishes of the diocese, including MBP, will participate in the ARISE faith formation and evangelization groups ministry. As I will explain at the pulpit next weekend in greater detail, ARISE is meant to be a means of on-going faith formation to help equip active Catholics in the work of evangelization and personal growth in Faith. There will be evening groups consisting of choir members, EMEs and lectors, men’s and women’s groups, youth and young adults. There will also be daytime groups as well as groups in Spanish. Please take a flier in the vestibule with days and times. Anyone can join any of these groups. It is my hope that as many of you as possible will avail yourselves to ARISE during the six weeks they run this Fall. Registration will take place after the weekend Masses.

Sincerely in Christ, Fr. John Maduri, Pastor

rest. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Yet that is not always true. Some sins, flaws, etc. that we need to overcome we just enjoy too much so we excuse them or accidentally on purpose put ourselves in situations of moral, and thereby, spiritual corruption. Other times we do not see clearly without the help of other people, and pride keeps us from heeding God’s voice through those sacred others that He places in our path. Perhaps we doubt the mercy of God or see no way out, or our contrition and amendment of life and behavior, is half hearted and insincere. “Repent” just to repent for itself offers no incentive, no real reason to do so. It points to something greater, “The Kingdom is at hand; eternal life is at hand; life giving truth is at hand, love is at hand; God is at hand. For those who seek the Kingdom, who desire eternal life, who want to live in the freedom of the children of God, repentance is not a burden nor is it accepted half heartedly. Every sin committed is not a moment of despair but a time of sorrow. We have wounded ourselves as we, not God, close off the good things that are at hand. Every unrepentant sin should be a cause for even greater sorrow because the good things at hand can be lost eternally. St. Paul tells us that “eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor have our minds conceived what wonderful things God has prepared for those who love Him.” If we had the faith the size of a mustard seed every sin would be avoided. If only! What is the goal of all of this. The second reading from St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians says it well, that “you be united”. Our final destiny and dignity is union with God. We begin that journey of unity with God by our unity with one another in the community and household of faith. If we can turn our faces and hearts to the others whom we have offended, family members, friends, coworkers, neighbors, we already begin to live a life of beatitude. We already begin to reign with Him Who desires us “not to die in our sins but to turn back to Him and live.” Fr. John Maduri

THE GREAT REBUILDIER God certainly seems to throw a few good punches at us men and women from time to time. In today’s first read-ing we are told that He “degraded” the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali. Actually Zebulun and Naphtali did a good job of degrading themselves. God, because He respects our freedom, allows us to make such tragic choices for degradation. The consequences that ensue are not a punishment but a chastisement that help us to see the error of our ways. There is an old expression that has great validity: “God always forgives, people some-times forgive, nature never forgives.” The theological axiom in moral theology says as much, “Sin is its own punishment.” Nations have experienced this throughout history, as have countless individuals. Zebulun and Naphtali had the law of God written in their hearts as we do. We have it even better actually. We have our Lord Jesus Christ, the Scriptures, and the Church’s teachings to remind us and enflesh the Truth that makes us free. We don’t need to bang our heads or stretch our imaginations in order to know what is right and wrong, true or false about life, love, justice, charity, marriage, sex. We know it. We are given the Sacraments, taught how to pray, heard the Commandments and the Beatitudes, the law of love it-self. Yet like last week’s readings, we see ongoing re-bellion, this time with Zebulun and Naphtali, and as al-ways, with ourselves. Also like last weekends’ Scrip-tures, we see that God will have no part in our long term spiritual and moral demise, the loss of salvation. He will give us our freedom, allow the natural chastisements to run their course, but He will not see us lost. If we want to be saved He is there to rebuild what we have ruined. We see how the Lord, despite all of the rebellion He is faced with, “glorifies”; how a “light has shown”; and how the people experience “abundant joy” and “make merry.” Our lives are so oftentimes like this. We bounce back and forth from fidelity to infidelity, from zeal to medioc-rity. There are of course many reasons for this, sin and its underlying causes most obviously. There are other issues too, our personality traits, our natural flaws, the circumstances we find our lives in. None of this is to excuse our infidelity or mediocrity but it does help us explain why God can be so merciful. He knows better than we do the brokenness of humanity. Can it be over-come? Here we turn to the Gospel. “Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand” is the pathway to making all things right. All we need to do is repent and God will do the

THE DAILY OFFERING By: Jonah Soucy

If you want to go deeper in prayer and relationship with God, committing yourself to a daily offering is crucial. Unfortunately, the daily offering is over-looked so often in our lives. Today I want to pro-vide a short reflection on what the daily offering is, and a few different ways we can go about making one. Commitment to a daily offering takes hardly any time, yet it will make a profound impact on your life by bringing deeper peace, as well as aide in the battle to grow in virtue.

The daily offering is, at its heart, making a gift of ourselves to God. In it, we basically tell God that we are His, and we give Him permission to work freely in our hearts and in our lives. God never forces Himself on us. If we put up walls between ourselves and Him, he stays on the other side of them for the most part, though in key moments He will still break through now and then when He knows we need it. But, because He is patient and because of our free will, there are times that we tell God to “get lost”, if not explicitly then implicitly in our actions and by choosing sin instead of His plan for us. All we have to do, more often than not, is just tell God He’s welcome here with us. In fact, many of the saints will attest that this is the fast track to becoming saints ourselves. The secret to holiness lies not in running ourselves into the ground day after day, and making huge and glorious acts of heroic virtue. The secret path to holiness lies in simply telling God every day that He can do whatever He wants with us.

As easy as this sounds, it can still be difficult at times. If we do it with a genuine heart and trusting in God’s promises for us, changes will happen in our lives. And it’s often the case that even when we now need to change it doesn’t come easily for us. This is where “dying to ourselves” becomes neces-sary. Our whole world view makes a shift, as we realize that we no longer live for ourselves, but for God and for others. We are purified in divine and radiant love, a love which melts away our imperfec-tions in a process that can be painful at times. Yet it is worth it by far. Sainthood is something each of us are called to, and something that each of us can at-tain. But as I wrote just a few moments ago, this

doesn’t happen by our hard work, but by surrender-ing ourselves to God.

There’s a few ways we can go about making this daily offering. The first is simply taking a few mo-ments every day and telling God in your own words that you offer yourself to Him and allow Him to work in you in whatever way seems most fitting to Him. Make sure you tell Him He has permission to do whatever He wants with, in, and through you. And don’t forget to tell Him you love Him. The sec-ond way is to go online and find a prayer of offer-ing. Print it out and stick it someplace where you’ll pass by it every morning. Sometimes you’ll see these prayers referred to as “consecration prayers”. Finally, you can write an offering prayer of your own and put it someplace you’ll see it every day. I would recommend doing this even if you’re not planning on saying it every day. There is nothing wrong with mixing these three up! Routine is good, but sometimes we need a change. But I really think everyone should write a prayer of offering at some point in their life. Make it your own. I know when I was a little kid I would write prayers to God and say things like, “have your way in me, even when I’m being a punk or trying to run away. I give You per-mission now to mold me even when I don’t want it in the moment.” Give Him the green light, and watch your life transform.

As a final note, try to make this prayer in the morn-ing. It says in Scripture that God’s graces are new every day, so take advantage of that the first mo-ment you’re able to! On a practical note it also helps us to keep God at the center of our day. God bless! __________________________________________ READINGS FOR THE WEEK
