The Adoration Of God

*Call to Worship Psalm 67 Rev. Michael Cannon

“May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us so that your ways

may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations. May the peoples praise you O

God; may all the peoples praise you. May God bless us still, so that all the ends of the

earth will fear him.”

*Confession of Faith The Belgic Confession, Article 20

“We believe that God—who is perfectly merciful and also very just—sent his Son to

assume the nature in which the disobedience had been committed, in order to bear in it

the punishment of sin by his most bitter passion and death. So God made known his

justice toward his Son, who was charged with our sin, and he poured out his goodness

and mercy on us, who are guilty and worthy of damnation, giving to us his Son to die, by

a most perfect love, and raising him to life for our justification, in order that by him we

might have immortality and eternal life.

*Gloria Patri No. 735

Confession Of Our Need Of Christ And God’s Grace

Corporate Confession of Sin

“Eternal and Almighty God, we confess before your Divine Majesty that we are miserable

sinners, born in corruption and iniquity, prone to evil, and of ourselves incapable of any

good. We acknowledge that we transgress, in various ways, your holy commandments,

so that we draw down on ourselves, through your righteous judgment, condemnation

and death. We have deep sorrow in our hearts for having offended you; and we implore

your grace to relieve our wretchedness. O most gracious God and merciful Father, have

compassion on us in the name of your son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Pardon our sins, give

us the graces of the Holy Spirit, and increase them day by day, to the end, that heartily

acknowledging our unworthiness and forsaking our sins, we may be filled with that

godly sorrow which brings about repentance unto salvation, and may bring forth fruits of

righteousness acceptable to you, through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

The Assurance of Pardoning Grace 1 Peter 2:24-25

“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to

righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep,

but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.”

“David has been heard and helped but not all the rebels have been put down, so he continues in prayer

knowing he has been set apart by the LORD. The believer is in a similar position. In union with the true

David, past deliverances from spiritual distress are a fact of experience, and the opposition to Christ’s

cause is ultimately futile. Through nearly starving (2 Sam 17:27-29) David is able to lie down and sleep comes

at once. To be at peace with God is to be at peace with oneself.”

The Session Has Scheduled the Sacrament of Holy Communion

A Means of Grace

to be observed on

Sunday Morning January 29, 2017

The scriptures warn us to be diligent in making preparation

before the celebration of Communion.

“Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, and then so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.” – 1 Cor. 11:27-29

In A Sacramental Catechism by John Williamson (1680-1750), he asks:

What sort of preparation is it that God requires of such that come to His table? It is not a slack or careless preparation to be done in a hasty and superficial manner, as some do who never set about it till Saturday or the Lord’s day morning before they commune. No, it must be timely and deliberately, conscientious and impartial, diligent and fervent in the use of all appointed means, depending upon God for the gracious preparation of the heart according to His promise – Ps. 10:17; Prov. 16:1

The Westminster Larger Catechism (Question 171) gives a wonderful and clear explanation of how we ought to prepare for the observation of this covenantal meal: “They that receive the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper are, before they come, to prepare themselves there unto, by examining themselves of their being in Christ, of their sins and wants; of the truth and measure of their knowledge, faith, repentance; love to God and the brethren, charity to all men, forgiving those that have done them wrong; of their desires after Christ, and of their new obedience, and by renewing the exercise of these graces, by serious meditation and fervent prayer.”

Carefully consider these before your participation:

Reflection on the depth of your love for Christ and the brethren.

Discernment of your own understanding of the Supper.

Meditation on Christ’s death and suffering.

Feeding on Him in faith.

Desire for Christ

Providence for the kind words of appreciation and the warm
