What can I say about Homecoming? As I indicated last week, the celebration begins well in advance of the big day. Alumni visits in the weeks prior to the game are a highlight. The growing excitement on campus is great fun to watch…culminating in the Pep Rally of all Pep Rallies! Who could ask for more than outrageous cheering, silly games and pie in the face fun! I love our kids and staff!! The day, itself, is a series of acts of love, hard work, dedicated talent and pure enjoyment! There is something for everyone from 1:00 through the evening. This year we had a record number of alumni join us and took two group shots to accommodate the steady stream of graduates! One of our alumni drove in from Raleigh just to attend the celebration! We love to get the updates on careers, families and see our grown up “kids”. Of course we all enjoy watching our “all heart” teams play! The MS and JV games continue to impress me with the skill development and sportsmanship of our young athletes. I love the fan turnout, as well. If we had a competition of spirit, the MS families would win this year, hands down!! Thanks to all of you who brought families, friends, and neighbors! The day is a long one and every game is an act of love. Your presence sends a strong message about your support of the students and staff! There was a definite (and regrettable) hole in the bleachers during the period between the MS games and the Boys’ Varsity games this year that we will take a look at and address for next year. By the end of the evening, the bleachers were, once again, full of enthusiastic fans who cheered their hearts out for our players! The Hall of Fame has become quite the event! Alumni students and staff make a special effort to be there for the unveiling. I know it is a powerful reminder to our current community of the caliber of students who paved the way for today’s accomplishments. I am so proud that Richie and his coaching team recognize the talent that came before and take the time to make up for the lack of ceremony in the past. Our years without the gym meant no place to call our own and to memorialize our past. Thanks to Richie and teams, we can give our alumni athletes their due! As you know, we do double duty during the next few months. With our eyes planted firmly on this year, our students and their goals, we are also in the throes of creating a budget, scheduling classes, and publishing a calendar in preparation for next year. As in all independent schools, our enrollment is the driver of all major decisions. We rely on our currently enrolled students to let us know their intentions in order to project for next year. If you are among the families who have received your enrollment contract for 2013-14, please read through it and let us know whether or not to plan for your child next year. Financial questions can go directly to our CFO, Bob Crenshaw. It is very important that we hear from you by the end of next week.

TAX TIME!

MANY THINGS TO THINK ABOUT INCLUDING….

Does your student have a diagnosed learning disability? Do you itemize your deductions?

Are you listing your tuition as a Medical Expense?

AND HAVE YOU COMPLETED YOUR GEORGIA GOAL FORM FOR 2013? If

every Cottage School parent participated in GOAL, we would have

sufficient scholarship money to meet the needs of all of our families.

Here’s some information that might interest you. There is a small

Private Special Needs School in Roswell with 35 students. Last year,

that small school raised over $300,000.00. No corporate donations

were involved. Just parents reaching out to associates, acquaintances,

and other families. If a school of 35 students can raise over

$300,000.00, surely a school of 134 can do better than $60,000.00.

Please don’t wait.

GET A TAX CREDIT OF UP TO $2,500.00. Go paperless and file at,

http://www.goalscholarship.org/for_donors/page/goal-paperless-process.

Why give money to the State of Georgia when you can re-direct those dollars to The Cottage School?

THERE IS NO REASON WE CAN’T ACHIEVE 100% PARTICIPATON.

and puts them at higher risks for STDs and teen pregnancy.

BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), established in 1907, is a worldwide civic and religious organization dedicated to the spirituality of the individual while promoting harmony, between individuals, within families, and within diverse communities.

Mandir is the name for a Hindu place of worship and prayer. The word mandir is composed of two words, Man and Dir, whose meanings are mind and still, respectively. Therefore, a mandir is a place where the mind becomes still; a place where we experience peace from worldly problems.

JOURNEY THROUGH JUSTICE

LAW LESSON ON THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS Dear High School Parents: As you are probably aware from recent stories in the news, juveniles in Georgia can be prosecuted as adults for certain criminal offenses. Juveniles who are at least 13 years old must be prosecuted as adults if they are charged with one of the “Seven Deadly Sins”: murder, voluntary manslaughter, armed robbery with a firearm, rape, aggravated sodomy, aggravated child molestation, and aggravated sexual battery. In order to explain the Seven Deadly Sins, we must teach students the elements of each of these offenses, four of which are sexually explicit. We have decided that the best way to do this is to have an experienced attorney teach this sensitive material to our high school students in gender based groups. Deborah Craytor, who instructs students on Georgia Law, will be coming to speak to The Cottage School high school students on Monday, February 4, 2013 in two morning sessions: One for the female students and one for the male students. Please sign and return the attached form to your child’s homeroom teacher by this Friday, January 25th.
