Third Sunday in Ordinary Time | Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 2

Work For Unity!

The episcopate is one, the part of which are held together by the individual bishops. The Church is one which with increasing fecundity extends far and wide… - St. Cyprian – AD 200-258

Quit using us to cause divisions!, St. Paul literally said to Christians in Corinth. “For it has been reported to me”, he said to them, “about you, my brothers and sisters, by Chloe’s people, that there are rivalries among you. I mean that each of you is saying, ‘I belong to Paul,’ or ‘I belong to Apollos,’ or ‘I belong to Cephas,’ or ‘I belong to Christ.’ Is Christ divided?” (1 Cor 1:10-13) Unfortunately, this still occurs in parishes and dioceses. Some people like to pit priests or bishops against one another, criticizing one while exonerating the one they prefer. This attitude often divides the community into those who are for or against. It also leads to being picky about Mass attendance. Is the Mass being said by my favorite priest or not? I remember once being met by a woman who had left Mass BEFORE the Holy Communion. After the initial surprise of running into me, she let me know that she was disappointed that the priest she wanted was not saying Mass. Suddenly, it’s not about Christ and salvation, but about personality cult. There has been a concerted effort to put Pope Francis against the pope emeritus, Benedict XVI. Like those people in Corinth, there are some Catholics, influenced by the media, who are casting themselves are Benedict’s Catholics as opposed to Pope Francis’. Recently, Benedict withdrew his contribution to a book because his writing was being twisted and used against Pope Francis. Like St. Paul, he refused to be used to divide the Church. Brothers and sisters, let us say, “no” to divisive tendencies. Let us learn to gather with Jesus Christ. For whoever does not gather with him, scatters (Mt 12:30). We must reject selfish interests and rivalries that often lead to divisions. As leaders, we must not let people use us to attack other leaders or pit us against one another. St. Paul urges us to work for unity, “I urge you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose” (1 Cor 1:10). Jesus prayed for unity and guaranteed that the gates of hell shall not prevail against his Church (Jn 17:20-23; Mt 16:17-19). For “through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross” (Col 1:20). To him be honor, praise and thanksgiving for ever and ever. Amen.

I feel as the years go on the topic of suffering becomes more and more talked about and looked at. When people talk about suffering sometimes it sounds like they didn’t know it even existed or that it could happen to them. Suffering is something we will all endure in our life but we will all endure it in different ways. For instance, people can experience the same tragedy but suffer from it differently depending on what that tragedy is and where they are in their lives. Suffering is a part of life but it’s how we deal with it that makes a difference. We tend to forget that even God has suffered before as well but God desires to bring good out of suffering and so should we. This weekend we are talking with our year 1 teens about this topic and I think it will prompt some very interesting small group discussions.

Prayer Request for Door-to-Door Neighborhood Visits

…the Lord appointed a further seventy-two and sent them in pairs…Luke 10:1 On January 25th, we will do a door-to-door

evangelization in our neighborhood. Missioners from our parish will go in pairs to visit our neighbors in East Ventura. The Pastoral Council requests that you pray for our first evangelistic endeavor of 2020. Our intention is that this simple activity of witnessing God’s love, will give others an opportunity to share the love of Jesus Christ. We also ask that you look for unfamiliar faces at the parish, that you smile and extend a greeting to these newcomers, so that they will feel welcome in the community life at our Church.

DID YOU KNOW?

Evaluate relationships based on context

We may think we know enough about appropriate boundaries in relationships, but boundaries are complicated, even for adults. Children rely on adults to define what is appropriate and what isn’t, in the context of the relationship. For example, some touches are “safe” or “unsafe” depending on who is in the relationship — a parent, a stranger,

a teacher, etc. For more information, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Keeping in Touch with Important Distinctions” from http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx. .
