Parshat Bo January 28, 2012 4 Shevat, 5772
The Torah teachesthat "G-d placed thefavor of the peoplein the eyes of Egypt" [Shmos11:3]. Prior to
leaving Egypt, theJews obtained goldand silver utensils
and articles of
clothing from theirEgyptian neighbors. This was afulfillment of a
promise that G-dhad made toAvraham "... andafterwards they willgo out with greatpossessions" [Bereshis 15:14]. The factthat G-d placed the
favor of the peoplein the eyes of theEgyptians to theextent that theywere willing to givethem their valuables-- never to see themagain -- was indeedmiraculous.
Perhaps there couldhave been a more
congruous method of fulfilling G-d's promise toAvraham. Perhaps itwould have made moresense if "G-d placed theFEAR of the people in theeyes of Egypt". After allthat had transpiredduring the Ten Plagues, the Egyptians were now
in awe of the Jews. Therefore, the morelogical way for this eventto occur would havebeen for the Egyptians togive the Jews theirvaluables out of mortalfear, rather than out of
'favor'.
Rabbi Baruch Leff
comments that the fact
that the wealth wastransferred to the Jewsin that way teaches ussomething about theExodus. The Exodusfrom Egypt, our Sagestell us, was the paradigmfor all future redemption. If we want to know howthe future redemptionwill take place, we mustexamine the prototype of

redemption thatoccurred in Egypt. Ineffect, this means thatbefore we leave thislast bitter exile, "G-dwill place the favor of His nation into theeyes of the nations".
Before we leave, the
nations must admireus. They will havewarm feelings towards
us. They will love us.That is because theprophet Isaiah saidthat the role of theJewish people in theExile is to be a "lightunto thenations" [42:6]. Thisconcept has
unfortunately beenborrowed and twistedand misconstrued inall different types of wrong ways. But thefact remains thatIsaiah the prophet toldus that we aresupposed to be a "lightunto the nations" - ashining example to the

human being is supposed to look like. Thepurpose of this world is to fill the world in itsentirety with the Glory of G-d. Not only the Jewsof the world, but all of humanity should come tothe recognition that there is one G-d whocreated this world and takes an active role inthis world. Jews are supposed to be the medium
of that message.
The Netziv (1817-1893) writes that had we notsinned and had we remained in the Land of
Israel and had we fulfilled our mission by living aproper life style in the Land of Israel, then wewould have never had to go into Exile.
Unfortunately, we did not do that and G-d had tosend us into Exile. Our job in Exile is to be this
shining example of what a person is supposed tobe.
The pasuk [verse] says "And all the inhabitantsof the land will see that the Name of G-d iswritten upon you, and they will fearyou" [Devorim 28:10]. The Talmud teaches[Berochos 6a] that this refers to the Tephillinthat are worn on the head. The Vilna Gaoncomments that the Talmudic reference is thehomiletic (Drush) teaching of the pasuk. But, theVilna Gaon asks, what is the 'simple' (pshuto)interpretation of the pasuk? There is a principlein Biblical interpretation that a pasuk always hasa simple interpretation [Shabbos 63a]. So what
is the simple interpretation of this pasuk? TheGaon said that the simple interpretation of thispasuk is that when a Gentile sees a Jew, heshould immediately recognize that the Name of G-d is written upon him. He should immediatelyrealize, "This is a holy person".

We have not yet arrived at that point. Theparadigm of the Exodus from Egypt is thatuntil we reach the level of "the favor of thenation is in the eyes of Egypt", signifying thatthe Gentiles respect and admire and cherishus, unfortunately, we are not holding at thelevel of redemption. This is the ideal for which
we must strive.
Unfortunately, if that indeed will be thestandard, one must wonder how close theredemption is today. We look forward to thetime when the recognized definition of a "Jew"will be a definition that will make us all proud.
