MARRIAGE: Couples planning to be married should contact the Parish Office at least six (6) months in advance of the wedding date. Weddings may be celebrated in the Main Church or Chapel.

RENEWAL OF VOWS IN CHAPEL: Couples wishing to renew their wedding vows in the Chapel should contact the Parish Office at least three months in advance of their anniversary date.

MINISTRY TO THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND: Please notify the Parish Office when a parishioner is hospitalized or unable to attend Mass, and wishes to receive Communion or the Sacrament of the Sick.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASS: Classes for Grades 1-8 are held on Thursday Evenings – 6:15 p.m. – 7:15 p.m. in the St. Athanasius Parish Hall.

LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend St. Athanasius will hold

their Sour Beef and Dumpling/Roast Beef and Mashed Potato Dinner. Thank you to all who

will support this dinner and for all the members of the Special Events Committee who have worked hard to prepare this meal

and all the activities connected with this day.

I want to especially extend my thanks to Eleanore Znamirowski and all those ladies and gentlemen who have assisted in the

kitchen and in the hall, often working behind the scenes to prepare this meal for everyone.

It is very hard these days to continue to carry on these wonderful parish traditions,

which are not only a great community builder, but also support our parish financially.

We are always in need of help. If you

would like to get involved and could volunteer some time, please see Eleanore or one of our Parish Staff members. I am

grateful for all that you do for both our parish communities.

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13

Seek Justice, Seek Humility

People who have had a close encounter with death often feel like God has saved them for

some reason. They cannot explain it. They do not know what that reason might be.

Whether they were preserved from an accident, aggressive violence, or a near-fatal illness, they believe that God has some

future purpose for them. The experience often makes them appreciate every day. It

makes them humble.

The prophet Zephaniah spoke to people who had had that kind of experience. He spoke not just to individuals who felt they had been

spared. He spoke to a people who felt that way. They had survived a war. They had

endured persecution. They had lived through exile. These people had a name for themselves. They called themselves “the

remnant.” The experience deepened their faith. It kept them humble.

When Jesus blessed “the poor in spirit” (Mt 5:3) he addressed the descendants of the

people who had escaped this danger. They formed a remnant who had remained faithful

after years of persecution and waiting. They were humble.

What calamity has your community survived? How has God protected you? Has it made a

difference in your life? Has it kept you humble?


1 Corinthians 1:26-31

God’s Choices

Jesus did not choose the best. He chose

disciples who were dense, who fought with each other, who jockeyed for leadership, who asked stupid questions, and who ran away

while he hung dying. They were not the best. They had no experience in public speaking,

anger management, catechesis, team building, or chairing committees.

And yet the church survived. One of the proofs that Christianity is divinely inspired is

that our founders did not know what they were doing, and still the faith spread far and wide.

St. Paul told the Corinthians that God chose

“the foolish of the world to shame the wise,” “the weak … to shame the strong,” “those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing

those who are something.” He was not talking about the apostles. He was talking

about the Corinthians. God chose them, even though they were not the best. God did this so that people would not trust in their own

strengths, but would trust in God. God can use people no matter how limited their gifts

are. All around us are people God has chosen for

ministry. They may not be the best at what they do, but they do it because God wants it

done. God does not always choose the best. But

God chooses people anyway. God wants you for something too. Have you ever said no

because you thought you could not do it? Might it be that God will do it, once you say

yes?

CONFIRMATION PROGRAM

FOR ADULTS

Many Catholics have never received the Sacrament of Confirmation for different

reasons. If you are 18 years of age or older and would like to be confirmed, the parish is hosting a four week preparation program,

which will begin on Thursday, March 2, 2017 and will meet from 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. in

the Chapel. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated at the Easter Vigil on Saturday, April 15, 2017. Please call Mary

BEANS AND BREAD On Saturday, February 4, 2017, casseroles

will be delivered to Beans and Bread. Pans and recipes are available in the vestibule of

ALTERNATE GIVING MASS ENROLLMENT This is a special way to give back to your

anniversary, we give flowers, or even gifts to others that are not needed. This Mass enrollment allows you to give in memory or

honor of a loved one, allowing you the satisfaction of perpetually honoring that

parish bulletin and Mass will be celebrated the first Sunday of every month at the 10:30
