PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3
On this Sunday we celebrate the Epiphany. The word “epiphany” comes from the Greeke piphainen, a verb that means "to shine upon," "to manifest," or “to make known.” Thus, the Feast of the Epiphany celebrates the many ways that Christ has made Himself known to the world, mainly the three events that manifested the mission and Divinity of Christ: the visit of the Magi (Matthew 2:1-12), the Baptism of Jesus (Mark 1:9-11), and the Miracle at Cana (John 2:1-11). You may recall the second luminous mystery of the Rosary: the Manifestation of the Lord at the Wedding in Cana. Here on this feast the Lord is manifested in the flesh to the whole world in the persons of the three wise men. We all are represented in these three personages, they were pagans, who were led to recognize the Messiah by a light of a star. The people whom God chose to bring the Messiah did not recognize Jesus, on the contrary: “When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him…” Herod was in trouble because he was afraid that this little tiny child will come to take away his temporal kingship, however, Jesus did not come to take away any temporal kingship, He came to show His Father’s love for humankind, and to lead all people to the heavenly kingdom. The kingdom of Jesus was not of this world. Herod’s view was a worldly one, that happens when we see things with the eyes of the world, everything is a threat, religion, faith, even God. Our attitude must be the one of the three wise men: searching for Jesus all the time and allow ourselves to be led by the light of faith. The long and tired journey of these men were overcome by the joy of meeting and adoring the new born king. We also are in a jour-ney and sometimes tiresome of the different challenges we have to face day by day, but everything is forgotten when faith leads us to see that our heavenly Father leads us by the royal road of his providence. Jesus said: “don’t let your heart be troubled, trust in God and trust in me…” we don’t have to panic and get anxious for the things of life. We are not Herods, but Christians, born for everlasting life. Let us worship the Lord with our lives, with our lips. Let us bend our knees and recognized Him as the center and master of our lives. We don’t have gift of gold, frankincense or myrrh, but what we have we give to Him: our lives, our devotion. Thank you for your generosity to all those who sent Christmas cards and gifts to us. January 3-9, 2016 “A Stranger and You Welcomed Me:” In the Gospel of Matthew (25:35) Jesus tells his disciples, "I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me." The call to welcome the stranger plays an important role in the lives of faithful Christians and has a particularly central place for those of us who work in the migration field. The migrant, who moves from one country to another is truly a stranger in the midst. Often unfamiliar with the local tongue of the new country, not to mention its customs, the mi-grant needs the support of local communities so that she can better adjust to her new surroundings. National Migration Week 2016 picks up on the theme of welcome and, in doing so, calls on each of us to welcome the stranger among us. Happy Epiphany! Fr. Mariano Varela, IVE

Pro Life Since everything is interrelated, concern for the protection of nature is also incompatible with the justifi-cation of abortion. How can we genuinely teach the importance of
concern for other vulnerable beings… if we fail to pro-tect a human embryo, even when its presence is uncom-fortable and creates difficulties?
Catholic Charities Adoption is a wonderful way to build a family. If you are interested in learning more about adoption call Catholic Charities at 1-800-222-5859. Our son has been the joy of our lives and has allowed us the opportunity of having a family. We are extremely grateful to his birthmother for bringing him into our world.” If you are interested in adoption visit us at ccwinona.org or call Catholic Charities at 507-387-5586 .

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
