Principal’s NewsDear Parents and Friends of St
John’s,
I trust the New Year has begun
well for everyone and that all
of our community had a happy
Christmas. We commenced the
new school year with excitement
and enthusiasm as Years Five and
Six students began in new state
of the art classrooms. The new
entrance to our school could only engender excitement and
a positive attitude to learning as our students entered the
area for the first time. I would like to thank Kate Skuthorpe
and Brett Cherry for the excellent work they did in ensuring
that all was ready for the start of the school year.
We welcome many new staff and indeed a number of new
families to our St John’s community. We trust and hope
that your stay with us will be long, fruitful and life giving for
Events in this monthFriday, February 1Opening School Mass

all. Our Years Eleven and Twelve students along with their
teachers arrived safely back from Canada and we can’t wait
to hear all of the travel stories in the coming weeks. We
thank Mr Sellars, Mrs Nerva, Mr Doig, and Miss Lyons for
giving their time and the care they gave to our students.
St John’s students past and present have excelled themselves
again. Our school received fantastic Year Twelve results and
a number of our students received Australia Day awards:
Tony Kerr, Tom McNulty, Hannah Hughes, Claudia Thom,
Holly Thom, Cameron Thompson and Rileigh Lawson.
Congratulations and well done to all of these young men and
women who model the Spirit of St John’s in their daily life and
in our community.
The school newsletter will only be published every two
weeks this year, so please be aware. As we now have so
much of our communication happening instantaneously
by electronic devices and the amount of time it takes to
produce the newsletter, this I think is a good decision. Any
form of communication is only as good as the people using
it; remember to read and be aware.
We have a rich and eventful term ahead of us. I would like to
remind you about uniform, attendance and lateness. These
things impact significantly on the running of the school and
the learning of your children. Please make sure your children
are at school, on time and in the correct uniform. I know the
year ahead will be a fantastic one but if at any time you are
not sure or have an issue, firstly contact the teacher. Seeking
clarity and having open communication is the key to success
for all. May the ‘Spirit of St John’s ‘ be part of all we do as
we strive to live out the Gospel message through Respect,
Compassion, Excellence and Justice. Thank you for your help
and support during 2017 and I look forward to working with
you again to achieve remarkable outcomes for our students.

CurrentNEWS!
Uniform ShopThe Uniform Shop is located at St John’s
School on Bowen Street. It is open from
8.00 - 11.00 am every Monday morning
and 2 - 5 pm every Thursday afternoon.
Year Seven VaccinationsThe Year Seven Immunisations are
on Thursday February 8th, in the school
library. Immunisation forms are to be returned by 1st February. Can you please
remind your child to have breakfast that
morning and to bring a drink bottle to
school?
Mr Penrose
Deputy Principal
Bus ReminderIf your child catches a bus and there is a
change to their roster, please
remember to notify the school before
1.00pm to ensure there is sufficient
time to notify teachers and students.
Student SupervisionParents and carers are reminded that
their children should not be in the .school
grounds before 8.00 am and after 3.15
pm as there is no supervision outside
these hours.
Dropping Off/PickingUp of Students
Parents please note:
Drop off/Pick up zonesAs the safety of our students is
a high priority here at St John’s
School, there are designated areas
in McDowall Street, Duke Street
and Bowen Street in which to drop
off and collect your child/children.
In order to ensure that this
system runs effectively, parents/
caregivers need to be considerate
of others by not parking in the
drop off zones while waiting for
your child/children, as this is
causing traffic build up and major
frustration.
ROMA SCOUT GROUP
Do your children (boys and girls) enjoy being outdoors, being active, making
new friends and learning new skills?
We currently have vacancies for new members in:
Cubs age 7-11, 6:00-7:30pm Wednesday
Scouts age 10-15, 6:00-8:00pm Tuesday
Venturers age 14-17, 6:00-8:00pm Thursday
All ages meet at the Roma Scout Den, 52 Soutter St, Roma (near the Railway
Dam).
We are also seeking more Adult Leaders and Adult Members to support
our youth’s activities. No experience is necessary, training is provided with
the opportunity to earn VET certificates. Males and females over 18 are
encouraged to apply. You do not need to have children in the group to join.
Have fun, give back to your community, relive your childhood, learn new
things, make friends and belong to a fantastic group!
For more information please email [email protected] or phone
Bryce on 0427632052 (www.scoutsqld.com.au).
Staff CarparkThe staff carpark is for staff,
emergency services and visitors/
contractors who visit the school
throughout the day. Due to the
safety of our students, parents
under no circumstances are to
collect/drop off their children in
this carpark. As a preventative,
we will be locking the gates in the
morning and afternoon.
Thank you for your co-operation.

Welcome to all parents, students and friends!
We are very excited as we begin to prepare for the school musical this year – Annie! It is a great show, and we are looking forward to working with you all. After a lengthy audition process at the end of 2017 we were able to find wonderful actors to take the lead roles for this show.
Being part of ‘a show’ is a great educational experience. Fantastic friendships and memories are made during the preparation time!
What makes a show really great is its chorus! If your child is in Year Four to Year Twelve then they should have brought home a note last week indicating that they are interested in being part of the chorus for Annie. They would then act and sing as either an Orphan, a Newzie (street kids of New York) or as assorted servants/ extras. Please give the note your attention, as we would love to have as many students as possible taking part in the show.
There would have also been a rehearsal timetable attached. We will work with the younger students as much as we can during their lunch breaks. However, there is an expectation that students will need to attend one after school rehearsal each week, and four Sunday afternoon rehearsals this term.
The final week before the show does tend to get very busy also.
Please contact us if you have any questions or problems. We will do all we can to make sure that this is a great experience for all our students.

Please return notes by Thursday 1st February. (Attention Mrs O’Connell)

TENNIS NEWSCongratulations to our Orange and Green Ball tennis teams at
the State Championships.
Orange Ball Team: Patrick Moloney, Camilo Garcia, Erin Brindley, Charlie Stivano and Cooper LangtonGreen Ball Team: Archie Stivano, Sean Dawes, Jeffrey Lunney, Riley Burns and Lachlan Lunney.
The students represented St John’s School by playing at the
Brisbane International Schools Competition from 4th until the
8th January. They trained each Tuesday afternoon after school in
the lead up to the competition. The students played singles and
doubles Fast4 format and competed against schools from all
over Queensland. While they were there, the students watched
famous players such as Lleyton Hewitt and Nick Kygrios. They
were lucky enough to score some autographs too! Thank you
to all the students and their families for your support and a
fabulous time at the tennis.
Go St John’s!

EditionTerm 1 Week 2 We acknowledge the original inhabitants of this
land, the Mandandanji people, and show our respect for their ancestors and traditions.
Back to school: Slow Down in 40 km/h School
Please take care around schools and adhere to the speed limits which are in place.
The school zone speed limit is designed to ensure motorists have a greater chance to react if something unexpected happens.
Children are also impulsive, unpredictable and inexperienced, which is why motorists need to exercise caution in the vicinity of a school.
Speeding through school zones greatly increases the risk to pedestrians as the faster a vehicle is travelling, the longer it takes to stop and the greater the severity of impact.
Today a familiar sight around schools is the School Crossing Supervisor. Their role is to ensure that pedestrians who cross the road at the school crossing do so in a safe manner.
They use a hand-held stop sign to stop traffic and allow pedestrians to cross the road safely. You must stop and wait until all pedestrians have crossed the road and the School Crossing Supervisor has returned to the footpath.
When children’s crossing flags are on display, you must stop and give way to any pedestrians on or entering the crossing (regardless of whether a School Crossing Supervisor is present or not).
Around schools, slow down, observe speed limits and obey directions from School Crossing Supervisors.
Keep our kids and our School Crossing Supervisors safe.
Distractions: Mobile phones If you are using your mobile phone when driving, you are not as focussed on the road as you need to be. Your attention is divided and your reactions are slower. You should: Switch your phone to
silent Put your phone in the
glove box Designate a passenger
to do the texting so you can concentrate on driving.
We all have a role to play Term 1 2018 Road Safety
