YEAR OF THE LAY APOSTOLATE

The Star & The Pure of Heart

The Magi are astrologers and members of the priesthood in

Persia. And it was a common ancient belief that a new star

appeared at the time of a ruler's birth.

The act of worship by the Magi, which corresponds to

Simeon's blessing that the child Jesus would be "a light for

revelation to the Gentiles" (Luke 2:32), was one of the first

indications that Jesus came for all people, of all nations, of

all races, and that the work of God in the world is not

limited to a few.

At home in their distant lands, the Magi had the comfort of great lives, yet something was missing -- they

were restless and unsatisfied. They were willing to risk everything to find the reality of their vision.

Unlike the poor shepherds, the Magi travelled a long road; they had to face adversity to reach their goal. The

shepherds also knew adversity, and it too prepared them to accept the angels' message.

But once they overcame their fright, they simply "crossed over to Bethlehem" to meet the Christ child. It was

not a romantic pilgrimage that we see in our manger scenes!

This is important -- Christ calls all peoples to follow him. Jerusalem is a new starting point for the Magi faith in

Jesus.

From the beginning Jesus is greeted with cheers and fury. Herod and his allies are troubled by the birth of the

Messiah. By disclosing to Herod, the birthplace of the Messiah, the priests and scribes became collaborators

in his evil intent. Ironically, it is the priests and scribes, not Herod, who will later bring about the death of the

"king of the Jews." It is the "chief priests and elders of the people" who will plot to arrest and kill Jesus

[Matthew 26:3-5, 47; 27:1-2, 12, 20]; "the scribes" are mentioned in 26:57 and 27:41. He was a threat to Herod

and to them: to the throne of one, to the religious empire of the others.

These evil intents turn the infancy narrative from being a children's tale, into a tragic adult story.

At Christmas, we see the inevitable sacrificial death of this "newborn king" -- the schism between the world

and God. The coming of Jesus is an invitation to risk and to embark on a journey of faith, a journey of life.

A child is born as the power of death attempts to rule. Herod tries to mislead the Magi to betray their journey,

to end their commitment to the future and new life. Herod fears the "great joy for all the people."

Brothers and sisters, modern society is increasingly afraid of human life -- the greatest joy for all people! We

must recommit ourselves to the new journey of life -- preserving it, upholding it, blessing it and giving thanks to

God for this great gift.

The wisdom and ways of the world, must disappear; we must sacrifice to find our deepest meaning and

peace: Jesus Christ. We, need to make quite a trek if we are to find any lasting meaning.

Bring your poverty, humility and simple openness for Him. Worldly knowledge, wisdom, power, prestige, and

the lack of humility often lead to despair.

If we are truly wise, let us follow the Magi. Let us have the courage to go a different path -- rejoicing. The star

and the journey will take us into the presence of the Child of Light and the Prince of Peace.

Los Magos son astrólogos y miembros del sacerdocio en Persia. Y era una creencia antigua común que una nueva estrella aparecería en el momento del nacimiento de un gobernante.

El acto de adoración de los Reyes Magos, que corresponde a la bendición de Simeón de que el niño Jesús sería "una luz para la revelación a los gentiles" (Lucas 2:32), fue uno de los primeros indicios de que Jesús vino para todos, de todas las naciones, de todas las razas, y que la obra de Dios en el mundo no se limita a unos pocos.

En su hogar, en sus lejanas tierras, los Magos tenían la comodidad de vivir vidas maravillosas, pero faltaba algo: estaban inquietos e insatisfechos. Estaban dispuestos a arriesgar todo para encontrar la realidad de su visión. A diferencia de los pastores pobres, los Reyes Magos recorrieron un largo camino; tenían que enfrentar la adversidad para alcanzar su objetivo. Los pastores también conocían la adversidad, y también los preparó para aceptar el mensaje de los ángeles. Pero una vez que superaron su susto, simplemente "cruzaron a Belén" para encontrarse con el niño Jesús. ¡No fue una peregrinación romántica com la que vemos en nuestros pesebres!

Esto es importante: Cristo llama a todos los pueblos a seguirlo. Jerusalén es un nuevo punto de partida para la fe de los Magos en Jesús.

Desde el principio, Jesús es recibido con vítores y furia. Herodes y sus aliados están preocupados por el nacimiento del Mesías. Al revelar a Herodes, el lugar de nacimiento del Mesías, los sacerdotes y escribas se convirtieron en colaboradores en su mala intención. Irónicamente, son los sacerdotes y escribas, no Herodes, quienes más tarde provocarán la muerte del "rey de los judíos". Son los "principales sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo" quienes planearán arrestar y matar a Jesús [Mateo 26: 3-5, 47; 27: 1-2, 12, 20]; "los escribas" se mencionan en 26:57 y 27:41. Era una amenaza para Herodes y para ellos: para el trono de uno, para el imperio religioso de los demás.

Estos intentos malvados convierten a la narrativa de la infancia en un cuento infantil, en una trágica historia de adultos. En Navidad, vemos la inevitable muerte sacrificial de este "rey recién nacido": el cisma entre el mundo y Dios. La venida de Jesús es una invitación al riesgo y a emprender un viaje de fe, un viaje de la vida.

Un niño nace cuando el poder de la muerte intenta gobernar. Herodes intenta engañar a los Reyes Magos para que abandonen su viaje, para que pongan fin a su compromiso con el futuro y la nueva vida. Herodes teme la "gran alegría para toda la gente". Hermanos y hermanas, la sociedad moderna teme cada vez más la vida humana, ¡la mayor alegría para todas las personas! Debemos volver a comprometernos con el nuevo camino de la vida: preservarlo, sostenerlo, bendecirlo y dar gracias a Dios por este gran regalo. La sabiduría y los caminos del mundo, deben desaparecer; debemos sacrificarnos para encontrar nuestro significado y paz más profundos: Jesucristo. Nosotros, tenemos que hacer una buena caminata si queremos encontrar un significado duradero. Trae tu pobreza, humildad y apertura simple para él. El conocimiento mundano, la sabiduría, el poder, el prestigio y la falta de humildad a menudo conducen a la desesperación.

Si somos realmente sabios, sigamos a los Reyes Magos. Tengamos el coraje de seguir un camino diferente: regocijo. La estrella y el viaje nos llevarán a la presencia del Niño de la Luz y el Príncipe de la Paz.
