RESPECT LIFE

Life: An “Epiphany” of God “Life is always a good. … Why is life a good? This question is found everywhere in the Bible, and from the very first pages it receives a powerful and amazing answer. The life which God gives man is quite different from the life of all other living

creatures, inasmuch as man, although formed from the dust of the earth (cf. Gen 2:7, 3:19; Job 34:15; Ps 103:14; 104:29), is a manifestation of God in the world, a sign of his presence, a trace of his glory (cf. Gen 1:26-27; Ps 8:6). This is what Saint Irenaeus of Lyons wanted to emphasize in his celebrated definition: ‘Man, living man, is the glory of God’. Man has been given a sublime dignity, based on the intimate bond which unites him to his Creator: in man there shines forth a reflection of God himself” (The Gospel of Life, n. 34). The next Respect Life Holy Hour: Friday, January 19, 2018 at 7:00pm.

THE BLESSING OF HOMES ON EPIPHANY

The feast of manifestation, or Epiphany, is traditionally

celebrated on the twelfth day after Christmas (January 6),

commemorating the arrival of the Three Kings (the Magi) in

Bethlehem, bearing gifts to worship the Christ Child. The

blessing of homes on Epiphany derives from a German

custom whereby each house is painted with the inscription

“xx+C+M+B+xx” for the Latin phrase Christus Mansionem

Benedicat (Christ bless this house), with the xx representing

the four digits of the new year – e.g., this year will be

“20+C+M+B+18.” These letters are coincidentally, the first

initials of the names of the Magi; Caspar, Melchior and

Balthasar. At the Masses this weekend, a card with chalk

will be distributed with instructions on how to perform this

blessing at your home. May the gifts of the Magi bring you

peace and contentment throughout the New Year!

SEÑOR DE ESQUIPULAS The ebony-colored statue of Christ of Esquipulas – the “Cristo Negro” – is an image of Jesus crucified and is revered by millions of the faithful in Central America. The original 400-year old image is housed in the Basilica of Esquipulas in the

town of the same name in eastern Guatemala. When Saint John Paul II visited the Basilica in 1996, he stated that this crucifix is “a most perfect an dcomplete image” of Christ on the Cross. The patronal feast day of the “Cristo Negro” is January 15. A replica of the original image will be on display in Assumption Church on the weekend of Saturday, January 13 with a celebratory Mass at 7:00pm that same day.

DAY OF PRAYER AND PENANCE

Please be aware that, this year, the day of prayer and penance for offenses committed against life is Monday, January 22 – a day Catholics should observe by offering sacrifices and prayers to God for the conversion of hearts towards pro-life.

God of all goodness, You have entrusted us with the gift of life.

Help us to appreciate that gift from the first moments of conception to the last breaths of old age.

Send your strength to all those who defend the unborn, the weak, and the dying against attempts to

cut short their lives. May your holy Spirit touch the hearts of

those who are tempted to choose the way of death rather than life.

Grant that your people may always be a sign of your love in the world.

Amen.

PRAYER TO SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL St. Michael the Archangel,

defend us in battle. Be our defense against the

wickedness and snares of the Devil.

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,

and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts,

by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits,

who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
