Dear Sisters and Brothers,Kathy and I hope that your

Holidays went well, and would like to wish you all a happy and healthy 2010.

This is the time of year fi lial lodges elect their new leaders, all nomination should be made at the February meeting and voted at the March meeting. Remem-ber this is the last year that the term for all lodge offi cers is One year. Starting in 2011 all terms for lodge offi cers will be for two (2) years.

I would like to thank lodges that invited Kathy and I to their Christmas party, we had a won-derful Chinese meal with the Winchester Ladies, we also had a great time at the dinner dance held by three lodges, Woburn Ladies, Winchester Ladies and the Billerica Lodge. Thanks to the Belmont Mixed Lodge for a great Pasta Night, and to Ross Zagami for the wonderful mu-sic he provided as the DJ and thanks to the Watertown Lodge for a great dinner dance.

I send many thanks to Rich-ard Alfonso, who interviewed Andre Urdi, President of the John A. Volpe lodge in Easton, and myself for their local cable TV program, seen in Easton and Stoughton. Richard did a very professional job.

A big thank you goes out to Brother Steve Cozzaglio and his O&E committee for the fi rst of four workshops across the state, every one of the 41 members

who attended commented how much they learned. Thanks to the Ambrose D. Cedrone Newton Lodge for hosting the event, and to Brother Franco Battista for preparing a great pasta fagioli lunch.

Our Charity Commissioner Sister Marylou Abbatessa and her committee put together two great Christmas parties for the people in the North End Nurs-ing home and those in the Don Orione nursing home; the looks on their faces were priceless, thank you Marylou. Members who have never been to nursing home Chrisman party should call Sister Marylou and sign up for next year.

Once again I would like to em-phasize our membership drive, the Order Sons of Italy is our best keep secret, we should be letting our communities know of all the great things we do, through newspaper articles, cable TV, these are great mem-bership tools.

Thank you to the Braintree Lodge for installing fi ve more new members, and to the Great-er Boston Renaissance Lodge who are installing another 25 members, great job by these presidents. Thank You — Thank You — Thank You.

I ask all members from every lodge, please help support our Grand Lodge events, we have or Carnevale Veneziano on Febru-ary 20, 2010, at the Crestview in Woburn, a great night is

planned by Brother Pat Marino and his committee.

We have the 2nd O&E Work-shop to be held at the ITAM Lodge in Pittsfield on March 10th.

On May 5th, our annual Law & Justice Day Breakfast is one of our major events where we honor local Italian Americans for the contributions they have made to their communities.

Our 3rd O&E Workshop will be held at the Braintree Lodge on May 8th.

On June 5th our 4th O&E Workshop will be held at the Victor Emanuel Lodge, Haver-hill, MA.

June 12th is our State Conven-tion being held at the Holiday Inn in Mansfi eld MA.

Please, if you have not been on our state website yet, it’s a must see, what a great improvement, I’m sure you will all agree, our web address is www.osiama.org.

As Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro, the founder of the Order Sons of Italy, stated in his inaugural address in 1905, I have a dream that all Italians and their chil-dren’s children will be proud to continue to carry on our Traditions, our Culture and our Language. This is still one of our main goals in 2010.

Kathy and I would like to wish all our members a very happy and Holy Easter.

God bless you all, and God bless the Order Sons of Italy.

Meet JAMES DiSTEFANO, State President

Hometown: Watertown, Massachusetts

Italian Roots: Born in Abruzzo, Italy

Occupation: President, Tonare Construction Corp. / Trustee for DiStefano Realty Trust

Joined OSIA: June, 1968

Current Lodge: Watertown, Piave Fiume Lodge #1036

Chief Duties State/National: State President / Chairman of National Cabinet

Initiatives, Plans, Goals: As State President, I am working very hard to in-crease our membership, install new initiatives to help maintain our per capita at its current level, and to spread the word for all the great work done by the Order Sons of Italy.

OSIA’s Greatest Strength: OSIA was founded in 1905 to help immigrants fi nd housing, jobs, education and to preserve our Italian Heritage. Today’s mission is also to preserve and teach our Italian heritage, our Italian language, to help Sisters and Brothers who are in need, along with raising money for our charities and for our Social Justice Commission.

OSIA Could Improve: As a Fraternal Order there are always places that we can improve on, the biggest is membership and retention. We must fi nd out what our younger generation wants and provide it for them, so we can continue to be a strong and viable presence in our communities.

How Can Th is Be Done: We must come up with programs that will attract the younger generation and have them join us so we can continue to teach them about our culture and heritage. Teach them about all the great things that we Italians have done for this great country, and to help us stop the stereotyping of Italian-Americans.

Advice for Lodge Presidents: Each Lodge President should work closely with their Council, get everyone involved and your job becomes much easier. Again, membership is so important, but also important is to have some fun at meetings and social events. Make members want to participate, provide them with a meal at meet-ings, a guest speaker, or call our Italian Culture Commission and we will provide a list of speakers for you, or provide a DVD to view at your meetings. Let the Grand Lodge help you in any way we can, CALL US, WE CARE, WE WANT TO HELP YOU.

Meet ANTONIO SESTITO, State 2nd Vice President

Hometown: Hingham, Massachusetts

Italian Roots: Born in Palermiti Catanzaro in Calabria, Italy

Occupation: Manager of Irrigation Supply House

Joined OSIA: 1990

Current Lodge: South Shore Lodge #1850, Hingham, Massachusetts

Chief Duties State: State 2nd Vice President, and Membership Chairman for the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.

Initiatives, Plans, Goals: It is my goal to assist our State President and the State Council to make this Order be the best it can be for the good of all members, and to support Grand Lodge functions and fundraisers.

OSIA’s Greatest Strength: Our greatest strength is our creed of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, along with our great culture and family orientation which makes us the best ethnic group in the United States.

OSIA Could Improve:

All lodge presidents need to have productive and fun meetings, this would improve the attendance at each meeting.

How Can Th is Be Done: As Membership Chairman I want to thank the fantastic hard-working committee that we have. We are working on diff erent programs including a National OSIA Appreciation Day. We have an incentive program which will give lodges credits on their per capita (from $200-$800). Also, fi lial lodge presidents should attend the Organization & Education Regional Meetings that are being held throughout Massachusetts.

Advice for Lodge Presidents: To all my Brothers and Sisters, we have a great State Council and if we can give you any assistance, we are only a phone call away.

Know yourOSIA COUNCIL

Meet CARMELITA BELLO, State 1st Vice President

Hometown: Worcester, Massachusetts

Italian Roots: Grandparents, Province of Avellino, near Naples

Occupation: Vice President & Chief Financial Offi cer for the Colleges of Worcester Consortium, Inc.

Joined OSIA: 1982

Current Lodge: Worcester Lodge #168

Lodge Note: My grandfather, Salvatore Bello helped to bring the Sons of Italy to Massachusetts. He sat on the fi rst Grand Council as a Trustee. My mother was the Financial Secretary for the Princess Maria Gabriella Lodge for many years, Aunt Gladys has held every offi ce in the fi lial lodge and is still active at 94. (See complete Worcester Lodge History in this issue.)

Initiatives, Plans, Goals: During this term I want to visit as many lodges in the Grand Lodge as possible, either by attending a function or a meeting. We have a committed Grand Council that will work together under the leadership of President James DiStefano. Membership and money is a challenge for many lodges and the Grand Lodge, yet there are several fi lial lodges that are thriving. We should try to replicate what the best practices of those lodges that are growing and try to implement the programs in other lodges if feasible.

OSIA’s Greatest Strength: Our greatest strength is our members. I love to talk with members in the lodges and fi nd out what they are doing and how it works. I’ve met so many wonderful people that I’m proud to call my brothers and sisters.

OSIA Could Improve: As a Grand Lodge, I believe we can improve on our coordination of events and functions. If we can get a master calendar of the fi lial lodges, the grand lodge and the national it may allow members to attend and also bring some opportunities for lodges to work together and cooperate on a membership drive, event or function. We should spend some time and resources to fi nd out what people want from the Sons of Italy, what makes people join, stay and remain active, and why do people leave our ranks.

How Can Th is Be Done: Filial lodges presidents should have offi cer meetings and try to set up a calendar of events, speakers at meetings and use the Grand Lodge Offi cers and Commissioners as a resource.

Advice to Lodge Presidents: Th is term we are using some time set aside at the Organization and Education Regional Meetings to have an open and frank discussion with the fi lial lodges. We want to hear their concerns so we can help where needed and also their successes so we can celebrate with them and use what we learn to assist other lodges.

Don Orione Nursing Home (Continued from Page 1)

Our Don Orione Nursing Home Party was postponed from January 3, 2010 to Sunday, January 10, 2010, because of inclement weather. This delay did not dampen the spirits of either the Charity Commission or the nursing home residents who await this party each year. Our Charity Commission Chair-man Marylou Abbatessa and her commission did a fantastic job. The party was scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and the Recreation Hall was fi lled to capacity as the Charity Commission members arrived.

Again Function Director Franca Montemuro greeted us and the festivities were in full swing. Danny Ventola and his accompanist were there to en-tertain us with their music and singing. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the singing. The Charity Commissioners greet the residents holding their hands and keeping in time with the music, others encourage them to sing many of the old tunes, and yes, some will even step out to dance.

Meanwhile the Grand Lodge photographer Dominic Campo-chiaro is clicking away and I’m sure you will enjoy the many photos he has captured for us in this article.

It was time for the arrival of Santa Claus and Michael

Abbatessa charmed them all. He was busy meeting everyone and wishing them well and promising gifts and goodies. The commissioners then went to work serving the cookies, and punch. President James DiStefano, Santa, and the com-missioners delivered the gifts, and there was so much that was presented to them the residents had a difficult time holding their gifts and trying to eat their goodies at the same time.

Then it was time for the festiv-ities to end and commissioners help in moving the wheelchairs to the elevators so that all will

return to normal. It is sad to see the end of this afternoon as one feels that this is only once a year that we do this and bring some happiness to these individuals.

Special thanks to Michael Abbatessa who was our Santa Claus, a job well done. Also the following: State President James DiStefano, Immedi-ate Past President Florence Ferullo Kane, Ann Hill, Delia Bartucca, Franco Battista, Vanessa Battista, Matt Ezekiel, Janice Pomeroy, Jay Larosee, Dom Campochiaro and Dorothy Berlandi.

Sunday, December 13, 2009 the Charity Commission was scheduled to visit the North End Nursing Home for its an-nual Holiday Party. And, yes the newly appointed Charity Com-missioner Marylou Abbatessa arrived with her new commis-sion, and the party was to put it mildly a tremendous success.

These residents at the Nurs-ing Home wait for the Sons of Italy to visit with them every year, it is sad that we cannot fi nd more time to spend with them. The Function Hall was so full, that we barely had room for the participants to this event. Danny Ventola and his ac-companist had everyone either singing, keeping time with the music, clapping and yes even dancing.

When Santa Claus arrived to spread his cheer, he was aided by his elves that carried huge bags fi lled with surprises for all. Santa Claus was portrayed by Brother Robert Oliverio who is president of the Belmont Mixed Lodge #2057, and again this year we welcomed Mickey and Minnie Mouse. The Charity

Commission was very generous (or we should note Santa and all his elves) had gifts for all the residents who attended. Mem-bers of the Commission baked special cookies and biscotti’s, a light punch was also served along with ice cream.

Function Director Tina Leone greeted all the members of the Sons of Italy who came to celebrate with the group. If your lodge would like to do something for shut-ins this nursing home would wel-come visitors. If your lodge has time contact Tina Leone at (617) 367-3751.

Special thanks to all who attended: State President James DiStefano, Immedi-ate Past President Florence Ferullo Kane, State Trust-ees Franco Battista and Matt Ezekiel, Charity Commission Chairman Marylou Abbatessa, Michael Abbatessa, Janice Pomeroy, Jay Larossee, Robert Oliverio (Santa Claus), Capt. David Frizzell of the Belmont Fire Department, Vanessa Battista, Dom Campochiaro, and Dorothy Berlandi.

The first workshop of the Organization and Education Commission was held Satur-day, January 23, 2010, at the Ambrose D. Cedrone Lodge #1069 in Newton. At this semi-nar we were also joined by the Membership Commission, as we all try to reach our mem-bership and work together. The morning started off with coffee, doughnuts, and friendly conversations. Everyone was in good spirits.

Our Organization and Edu-cation Chairman, Brother Ste-phen Cozzaglio, introduced our worthy State President James DiStefano who welcomed all in attendance and thanked them for attending. Chairman Ste-phen Cozzaglio took some time explaining what the Organiza-tion and Education Commission was and was not. A packet with reference material on the topics to be covered in the workshop was given to each in attendance. The Director for National Con-tacts was discussed and duly noted that the information was for reference only and that all inquiries should come though the Grand Lodge of Massachu-setts offi ce. A Grand Lodge Di-rectory was also made available to those present.

President James DiStefano, First Vice President Carmelita Bello, Second Vice President Antonio Sestito Membership Chairman, and Immediate Past President Florence Kane teamed up to inform those at the work-shop of the fund-raising ideas being pursued. The Chairper-sons for the Fund-Raising Com-mittee are Florence Kane and Walter Robak. Other ideas were presented along with the impor-tance of the Benefi t Insurance Commission and its insurance programs. A question and an-swer period followed.

Brother Patrick Moreno, Chairman of the Cultural Com-mission, spent time explaining the purposes of the Cultural Commission and what it is doing. One important project was the PegMedia. This project involves having public access channels show Italian cultural programs on television.

The history of the Worcester Lodge #168 is a combination of several lodges each with its own inception. Below is listed the history of each individual lodge.

LODGE CRISTOFORO COLOMBO #168

Loggia Cristoforo Colombo has a long and honorable his-tory beginning on September 28, 1890 with the organization of the Mutual Benefi t Society Cristoforo Colombo by Mi-chele Valva. The society was organized to assist the Italian immigrants in their new coun-try. In 1913 the membership voted to become the new Loggia Cristoforo Colombo #168 in the national organization of Order of Sons of Italy in America. This was the fi rst lodge organized in the Commonwealth of Mas-sachusetts.

Many of the Worcester orga-nizers helped form the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. Mem-bers of the fi rst grand coun-cil included Worcester Lodge members: Assistant Grand Venerable Gaetano Cuccaro, Grand Financial Secretary Giuseppe DeMarco and Grand Trustee Salvatore Bello.

1 pounds haddock fi llet1 medium onion1 large chopped garlic clove or garlic powder 2 fresh tomatoes 1 tablespoon oregano fl akes1 or 2 tablespoons grated Romano cheese (optional)2 tablespoons olive, canola, or vegetable oilSalt and pepper

Spread some oil on bottom of a broiling tray or baking pan. Place haddock fi llet skin down on tray or baking pan. Cut tomatoes into ¼-inch slices and place over haddock fi llet. Cut onion in ¼-inch slices and layer over tomato. Sprinkle oregano, salt and pepper to taste over onion. Spread chopped garlic, or garlic powder, over contents. (Optional) sprinkle grated cheese over contents. Next, sprinkle oil of choice over all. Cover and place at least two inches below broiling coils. Broil for about fi fteen minutes. Remove from broiler. If dry, add a small amount of water. Cover and return to broil for about ten minutes. Remove from oven. Baste haddock with the liquids that accumulate in the broiling tray or baking pan. Return uncovered and brown onions and tomato. Check frequently to prevent burning or drying out.

*Cooking time for the haddock fi llet depends on the thickness of the fi llet.

NOTE: When Mama prepared this meal, I remember enjoying the fragrances of garlic, tomato, oregano and broiling fi sh that spread throughout the kitchen. Mama liked adding some Romano grated cheese occasionally over the contents. She referred to this meal as “Haddock alla Pizzaiola.”

As the haddock cooked, I checked to be sure that we had plenty of bread available at home. I enjoyed dunking my bread in the juices while eating the broiled fi sh, and I still do.

The Cristoforo Colombo Regina Elena Lodge #169 of Fitchburg held their annual Christmas Party on Monday, December 14, 2009 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Fitchburg. At the start of the night, President Bob Pacetti welcomed all in attendance and told them to enjoy the evening and have a great time. A large number of members attended the event in a festive Christmas atmosphere.

Members enjoyed platters of food assortments and home-

made desserts (made by the members). Music was provided by “Uno” with Bob Pacetti, who is also President of the lodge, on keyboards, bass pedals and vocals. An array of music, including Christmas favorites, was played to the delight of members. Members enjoyed food, a festive atmosphere, camaraderie with others, social-ization and dancing.

As members were fi nishing up their meal, local member, Andy Roy, acting as Master of Cer-emonies, announced there will be a special show presentation and announced each of the per-formers, prior to them taking to the stage. The fi rst personality up on the stage was Frank Sina-tra, appearing in a black tuxedo and trademark fedora black hat with a white handkerchief in his pocket, who sang “Strang-ers in the Night”, “New York, New York” and “My Way”, to the delight of all in attendance, as the lights were turned down

than Elvis Presley. The crowd roared as he took to the stage in his typical “Elvis” attire, white jump suit with sequins and colors, neck kerchiefs, black wig and trademark Elvis sun-glasses. Elvis welcomed the au-dience and began with the song “It’s Now Or Never”, then sang “Can’t Help Falling In Love” and Elvis motioned for his two backup singers, Christine Roy & Elizabeth Pacetti to join him on stage and fi nally sang “The Wonder of You”. The perform-ers on stage sang in their own voices, which of course, all were portrayed by Bob Pacetti, with background music and his daughters, as backup sing-ers. When Elvis Presley was on, one member yelled, “Who’s that” (not realizing who was dressed up in the costume)? Everyone in attendance was very sur-prised to bear witness to the three special guests for the evening. The staging was amaz-ing with colored and blinking lights and of course the live singing. The Master of Ceremo-nies, Andy Roy, then took to the stage to end that part of the presentation.

All in attendance were treated to this surprise performance (never done before at this Lodge) it was similar to a dinner and show performance at larger ven-ues. President Bob Pacetti then came back on stage to close out that part of the performance with comments and how it came to be. Bob then retook his place at the keyboards to continue the evening with additional music favorites and song requests. He was also dressed in a festive red shirt, black vest and black pants.

Since returning as President, Mr. Pacetti created a number of goals for the year 2009-2010 year and is attaining those goals. He has worked tirelessly once again to bring livelihood, renewed interest, new and fresh ideas, reaching out to potential new members, creating the fi rst local web-site, “new” individual-ized Sons of Italy local Fitch-burg Lodge #169 banners to promote the local lodge, as well as show the pride of our local lodge, has strongly encouraged all current members to bring in as least one “new” member, if not more, over this past year, has run well organized and informative meetings, provided leadership and direction, but reminds members the members are important and necessary to make things happened (as one person cannot do it alone), and when a whole lodge works together, great things can be accomplished, as these goals are being met. His spectacular

efforts at this Christmas Party is evidence and a small testament to the commitment, dedication and love he has for the Sons of Italy in America and his lo-cal lodge to continue to keep it alive, growing in membership and viable.

Assistance and cooperation made this possible, by commit-tee members, members, guests, members who baked goodies and desserts and attendance by all. Road crew members set up and take down, of the music equipment, stage, cos-tumes, hall, were: Andy Roy, Russ Poirier, Christine Roy, Elizabeth Pacetti, Bobby Poirier, Lynn Sarao, Ann Pacetti, Flor-ence Volpe and Bob Pacetti. Coffee runs were handled by Russ Poirier. Video camera was done by Christine Roy and pictures by Elizabeth Pacetti. Music by “Uno”, as well as the celebrity performers was done by President Bob Pacetti. The President’s new grandson, Jake Roy, (one month old) attended his fi rst performance to view his grandfather in action, and he enjoyed it immensely.

Christmas Party Committee members were Ann Pacetti, who coordinated the hall and food platters, along with Florence Volpe, Sylvia Poirier and Bob Pacetti.

All in attendance had a great time and were treated to per-formances that will be remem-bered for a long time. The Cris-toforo Colombo Regina Elena Fitchburg Lodge #169 knows how to have a good time, as was experienced this night. Something that will truly not be forgotten.

GORIZIA LODGE #467, RUMFORD, MAINE

Celebrates 50 th Anniversary of Lodge Home

The Gorizia Lodge of Rumford, Maine recently celebrated 50 years at our current location. This

lodge, established in 1914, is one of the oldest organizations in the Northeast.

December is always a time for holiday parties and the Winthrop Ladies Lodge gath-ered for their annual holiday luncheon.

Dave and Connie Goll, own-ers of the lovely Winthrop Arms Restaurant here in Winthrop, greeted us as we settled in to enjoy a wonderful meal. Presi-dent Dottie read over a few brief notices from the Grand Lodge and announced that our 50-year anniversary album was accepted into the University of Minnesota Immigration History Research Center archiving pro-gram. Lodge committee meet-ings were announced and the vote taken to dispense with our January and February meet-ings. Burr … we are not brave enough to weather the storms! We will resume the lodge busi-ness in March at the Senior Center.

This was a very special day as we celebrated sister Toni Cea’s birthday. Toni has been a loyal member of the order and the ladies lodge serving many National, State and fi lial lodge positions through the years. It was wonderful to have her with us. The lodge is indeed fortu-nate to have some wonderful senior sisters who support our endeavors and are proud of their heritage and membership in the OSIA.

After lunch our guest speaker, Laura White, a national award-winning journalist, shared some of her experiences in covering articles on people, crime, the

military, celebrities, human in-terest, medicine, lifestyles and her worldwide travels. Laura’s variety of topics have appeared in the Boston Herald, Boston Globe, USA Today, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Boston Magazine, Woman’s World, Reader’s Digest, Discover and other leading newspapers and magazines. Her Boston Herald ‘Rape’ series was used as the basis for new legislation here in Massachusetts. Laura has covered celebrities of all kinds from presidents, the Pope, Prince Charles and Jackie Ken-nedy along with movie stars too numerous to mention. Her husband Pat was along to share in the afternoon and he passed around some wonderful photos taken of these famous folks. She has flown with the Air Force and broke the sound bar-rier. Laura has reported from Italy, Paris, Istanbul, Beirut, the Middle East and was only the 2nd woman writer allowed into Saudi Arabia before the 1st. Gulf War. It was so fascinating and entertaining to hear of her adventures.

Next the ladies played ‘Purse Scavenger’, a fun game, with State Deputy Josephine Tanner winning the most points. She sure has a lot of ‘stuff’ in that handbag of hers!

Hugs and holiday best wishes ended the meeting and we are looking forward to another won-derful New Year highlighting our Charitable and Scholarship programs.

Birthday Gal Toni Cea, friend Cherie and President Dottie.

It is a common tradition in many colleges that one professor is given the opportunity to speak on a topic of their interest as if it was their ‘Last Lecture.’ A new program at Merrimack College in Andover provides an opportunity for a college student to speak in a formal and disciplined fashion about what matters most to him or her at this point in their life. The event is in the collegiate tradi-tion of Last Lecture.

The inaugural First Lecture will feature Merrimack senior Brian Caira, of Wilming-ton, as the kick-off speaker - his topic of discussion is a surprise. “All I can say is that it’s partially based off my personal experi-ences,” he noted. “It’s written as if it was the very last thing I had the opportunity to say to my family, my friends, the faculty and the students at Merrimack College.”

Caira hopes to see the First Lecture become an annual spring tradition at Merrimack College, just as the Last Lecture for faculty members is in the fall.

Caira, a member of a well-known family in Wilmington, is a member of the Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli Lodge #2183, as are his parents, siblings, grandmother and all of his aunts and uncles. He will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in English and hopes to secure a position in the fi eld of education, as a secondary school teacher.

Merrimack College is proud to offer this

new event as a platform for students to con-tribute to conversations on campus about values, meaning, and purpose in life, and is delighted that Brian Caira, a member of the college’s Mission Effectiveness Council, will deliver the First Lecture. Participat-ing in the race was: Bob Pacetti, President of the Fitchburg Lodge, local lodge mem-bers: Liz Pacetti, Past Recording Secretary, Christine Roy, Past Arbitration Commission member and Andy Roy. The race was to honor Armed Forces and Veterans and also allowed participants to dedicate the race to some one of their choosing. All of the four from Fitchburg dedicated the race to their Dad and Grandfather, John R. Pacetti Sr., a long time member of the Fitchburg Lodge,

who passed away in September 2008. He was a veteran of World War II and had received the distinguished Sons of Italy “Golden Lion” Award in 2007. In addition there was a Sons of Italy Division and each of us came in tops in that division and awarded a Sons of Italy Trophy and medal for competing times in that division. We had the opportu-nity to speak with members of other Lodges. After the race we enjoyed pasta graciously prepared by members of the Lawrence Lodge. This was a great way to interact with members from other Lodges. Thank you Lawrence SOI Lodge for a good time. All had a good time.

Bob Pacetti, President of the Cristoforo Co-lombo Regina Elena Lodge #169 of Fitchburg, unveiled the two “new” banners, individual-ized for the local lodge, he had been working on. President Bob Pacetti listed a number of goals months ago and at the November 23, 2009 regular meeting, he unveiled the fi n-ished banners, one of the many goals to be reached over the coming year. One banner will be used for the podium, while the other larger banner will be used for table displays and representing our Lodge in parades. This is the collaboration of a number of months of planning, designing and ultimately having the fi nished product completed. It consists of the colors purple and yellow gold and boosts the Fitchburg Lodge’s name prominently on the top, with the Order Sons of Italy in America emblem in the center. These will be used to display the pride the members have for their Lodge and individualized for our local Lodge.

At the monthly meeting of the Lodge, Brother Todd Petti showed those in attendance the miniature statuette of the Rocky Marciano Statue that is going to be placed at Brockton High School. As the statue was passed around the room each member, if they choose, could have a picture taken of them with it.

The statue, commissioned by the World Boxing Commis-sion, will be given to the City of Brockton and will be erected at the site of the High School football stadium which is also named for Rocky Marciano. The completion date is projected to be May 2010.

Rocky Marciano held the title of Heavyweight Champion of the World from September 1952 when he knocked out Jersey Joe Walcott in the 13th round, and retired after defending the title against Archie Moore who he knocked out in the 9th round in September 1955. It was his 6th defense of his title and his 49th fi ght. He is the only heavyweight champion in his-tory to retire undefeated.

Rocky retired with a record of 49-0 with 43 knockouts which included 11 in the 1st

round. Rocky was a member of the

Patrizio Moreno, Chairman of the Italian Culture Commission of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts visited the Christopher Columbus Lodge #216 in Brockton to give a talk about his involve-ment with the Burlington Lodge and how he developed a program of speakers who talked about many subjects pertaining to Italian culture. After this success he was asked by State President Jim DiStefano to expand this to the Lodges throughout the area. Pat gave examples of the various speakers he has made contact with and wants to make them available. Those in attendance told their Culture Committee Chairman, Richard Alfonso to arrange such events to occur.

The Brockton Lodge had the Initiation of 2 new members towards their goal of 15 for the year. With the commitment of all members we will continue to grow our membership. After the meeting Patrizio Moreno congratulated the new members and answered questions from many of the Brothers and Sisters of the Lodge.
