What’s Cooking At Club CSC @

Tessensohn

Stay Fighting Fit!

NEW : new course

THE dawn of a new year is associated with new hopes and aspirations for all of us. Here at the Civil Service Club, we have a vision and mission statement to reflect our Club’s ethos and objectives, which will guide our goal-setting:

Vision: To be the Club of choice for public officers.

Mission: To provide affordable quality facilities, activities and services which fulfill the needs of our members.

We hope to actively work towards achieving this vision and mission through a series of positive changes. Development plans at the three clubhouses are underway to ensure that members can enjoy three distinctive experiences with a single card. Bukit Batok Clubhouse will eventually evolve into an eco-friendly family club, Tessensohn Clubhouse will be a family town club and Changi Clubhouse will boast a family sea-side resort and recreation club.

At the Tessensohn Clubhouse, the makeover of the swimming pool area was completed in end-December 2010. The new lift will be operational by end March 2011. The upgrading of Planet Bowl, tennis courts and badminton hall will also be completed by end April 2011. During the Chinese New Year Bazaar on 15 January 2011, members can visit Tessensohn Clubhouse to experience the new tropical feel of the swimming pool area and sample the tantalising food provided by the new cafe operator, Simply Peranakan.

While Bukit Batok Clubhouse is fairly new, we will be improving the existing facilities such as the children’s poolside water play features, expanding the floor area of the children’s indoor playground with more play features, refreshing the look of the cafe at the Westwood bowl and upgrading the toilets beside the fruit machine room.

Changi Clubhouse will undergo major renovation and upgrading works which will be completed by end December 2013. Work is expected to commence in August 2011 and will entail the building of chalets, dining outlets and recreational facilities.

Beside the upgrading works, the main focus of the Club for 2011 is to organise more family based activities and mass, non-competitive and healthy sporting activities for our members and public officers. We will explore opportunities that will enhance the value of the membership and reach out to public officers who are not yet members of the Club to widen our membership base. The Management will also review the processes on security, safety and services to improve the experiences of members visiting the Club.

Over the next 2 months, the Club will be organising a host of activities for our members. The highlights will be the Chinese New Year Bazaar on 15 January and the LOHEI on 11 February 2011. The Bazaar will have activities for members of all ages including rock climbing, arts and crafts, performances, cooking demonstrations and New Year goodies for sale. For details, please refer to pages 23 to 26. The Chinese New Year LOHEI at Qian Xi Restaurant is an annual feature and is usually fully booked every year. At just $35 per member, customers can enjoy a 9-course dinner inclusive of Yusheng, door gift, performances and a lucky draw. This is

definitely a great and affordable way to celebrate Chinese New Year with your loved ones and friends.

I wish to thank all members for whole-heartedly supporting the CSC Dinner and Dance 2010. All the tickets were sold out by end-November 2010. Members and their guests who attended the dinner and dance had a

great time basking in the camaraderie, great entertainment and year-end spirit. Everyone went home a winner with customised door gifts and table

prizes. The lucky ones also won attractive lucky draw prizes. It was indeed a befitting end to a good year and certainly a night to remember. For those who were unable to participate in the dinner and dance, I hope you managed to partake in the various activities specially organised by the clubhouses for you and your family.

The Management looks forward to another exciting year to work with the Executive Committee and members. On this note, I wish all members a Happy

and Prosperous Lunar New Year.

IT was a fun-filled day of joy, magic and laughter for the children who celebrated an early Christmas at the Tessensohn Clubhouse on 18 Dec 2010. They were treated to an afternoon of games, magic performances by Kyle Ravin and delightfully sweet candies.

Face painting and balloon modelling were the children’s favourite activities, judging by the long queues and the look of enchantment on their faces. Of course, the happiest moment for all was when Santa came to shower the children with Christmas presents!

voice less of your opinions to avoid being victimized. Avoid attending funerals if you can. Prep yourself with more supplements to boost your wellbeing as this will be a demanding year for you.

Born in the Year of the HorseThere is a host of auspicious stars residing in the palace for those born in the Year of the Horse. Tian Xi, Yu Tang, Tian Chu and Tai Yin bring you abundance of prosperity and happiness in the year of Rabbit. This is the year that presents an opportunity for those who have sown their seeds to watch them grow. It will be a rewarding year for both your career and personal life. Amidst the depressing climate in the economy, you are the only one beaming with joy and prosperity! One issue that could be a cause of unhappiness or setback would be your health. Avoid dangerous adventures or activities.

Born in the Year of the GoatThose born in the Year of the Goat are blessed with a string of positive stars residing in their palace in 2011. These positive stars not only help to negate or mitigate the ill effects of the negative stars, but also bring good fortunes to those born in the year of the Goat. If you happen to be in the creative field you are in luck this year as the creativity star, Hua Gai, resides in your palace. This denotes creativity and the ability to excel in literary art or studies. However, this star also brings about loneliness due to its nature as a “sad poet”.

Born in the Year of the Monkey

For those born in the Year of Monkey, Yue De and Di Jie bring success in your achievements and accomplishments. Should you face any challenges or unresolved matters, it will be all taken care of this year with the help of these noble stars. There are very few reasons for the monkey to be unhappy this year. There may be some disputes and problems arising from betrayals and disappointments. Financially, there are possibilities of an unexpected loss of wealth.

Born in the Year of the Rooster This is going to be a very challenging year for those born in the Year of Rooster. Sui Po, Da Hao, and Lan Gan suggest that there will be great loss of wealth and disappointments in your endeavours. You are also in conflict with the Grand Duke of Jupiter, which suggests that those in authority are standing just opposite you, looking at your deeds and actions. Avoid making any major decisions or moves in both your professional and personal life. This is a year where you should lie low and learn to make use of others’ ideas for success.

Born in the Year of the DogThere are a host of auspicious stars residing in the palace for those born in the Year of the Dog. Zi Wei, Sui He, Yu Tang and Long De bring you abundance of prosperity and happiness in the Year of Rabbit. This is the year that presents opportunities for those who have been laying the right seeds, waiting for growth to take place. It will be a rewarding year both in your career and personal life. Amidst the depressing climate in the economy, you are the only one beaming with joy and prosperity! Your health could be a cause of unhappiness or setback in your life. Pay extra attention to your physical and mental health as they could be a hindrance to your endeavours.

Born in the Year of the Pig

There are no auspicious stars in your palace this year. Negative stars suggest that you have to lie low and avoid getting involved in risky or illegal activities. You are likely to be caught in the act and be punished for it. Avoid Yin energies such as visiting the sick in hospitals or attending funerals, if you can. Make the effort to attend more celebrations and auspicious events to benefit from the good chi.

Born in the Year of the RatThis will be a lucky year for those born in the Year of the Rat, due to the effects of the auspicious stars. Good relationships and nobleman luck can be expected. This will be a great time for those preparing for examinations or those attending self improvement courses. For those who are single, there are also great opportunities to meet somebody this year. Just remember, people are your assets for success this year!

Born in the Year of the Ox There are no auspicious stars in your palace this year. As there is a tendency to be accident-prone this year, do not engage in dangerous activities or sports. Have an insurance policy in place before you embark on that trip, be it a holiday or business trip. After a hectic year of networking in 2010, you may want some time for yourself. You may tend to be antisocial and shy away from social activities.

Born in the Year of the Tiger There are three negative stars residing in your palace this year. Fortunately, the ill effects are greatly reduced by the presence of the TianYi Nobleman. As such, this year’s luck will be good for those born in the Year of the Tiger. Good relationships and nobleman luck can be expected.

Born in the Year of the Rabbit Although Jian Xing, the authority star is in your palace, it is advisable to avoid making major changes to current situations, as the Grand Duke star is also present. This will bring pressure and challenges so be careful and avoid risky adventures or commitments

With only one positive star and more negative stars, you have to lie low. Be careful with words and actions to avoid being penalised. Avoid Yin energies such as visiting the sick in hospitals or attending funerals, if you can. Make the effort to attend more celebrations and auspicious events to benefit from the good chi.

Born in the Year of the Dragon

The Tai Yang star brings help from the male nobleman. If you are a female Dragon, you are also going to have a good chance at finding your Mr. Right this year. For those who are in a relationship, we can expect wedding bells to ring this year. Avoid dangerous sports as you are likely to be injury-prone. Financially, you will be well guided by your noblemen. However, you should avoid being a guarantor for anyone as you are likely to be the target for betrayal.

Born in the Year of the Snake There are more negative than positive stars in your palace this year. It is advisable that you continue to stay focused and proceed cautiously to ensure a smooth year ahead. Guo Yin and Yi Ma stars residing in your palace denote a year with lots of movements which are probably job-related.

You are likely to enjoy an increase in income due to your hard work. However, there is a tendency for you to meet with political relationships, gossips and backstabbing. Lie low and

Hi. I think the new CSC newsletter is really cool!

I love the familiar Clean and Neat feel of the newsletter (which even attracts my 6 and 8 year old kids to catch a browse through) and the

new Colourful, Vibrant wrap plus the Richly-packed Contents of Happenings, Activities and Promotions. The new Fusion is just perfect for wrapping up the year and welcoming the New Year!

Well done.

-MDM ROSIE ONG BENG NEO-

I would like to commend such a conscious effort to revamp the

newsletter. It is more palatable and the categorisation is clear

and it is now easy to locate the stuff which I am interested in!

Yours sincerely

I love it. I was telling my husband how easy it is to find the topic which I am interested in and I was thinking that the person or persons responsible for the revamping of the newsletter ought to be commended. There are also much much more activities and improvements in the club.

Kudos to the newly revamped fusion!

This year’s Public Service Sports Carnival, organised by the Civil Service Club, was held at Toa Payoh Stadium on Friday, 19 November 10. Aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle and camaraderie among public officers, the carnival brought together officers from many government agencies for an afternoon of fun and sporting activities. Guest-of-Honour Mr Peter Ong, Head of Civil Service and CSC President, graced the event and also experienced some of the workout firsthand.

Participants were greeted by an electrifying carnival atmosphere on arrival at the stadium. They received goodie bags and gamely tried their hand at the many game booths. There were games to determine who could kick the most accurate or fastest soccer ball or stay on a surfboard the longest and many more. The dance competition really got everyone laughing and cheering. In the dancing competition, sporting participants danced and grooved their way to various songs while blindfolded, and entertained the crowd thoroughly. A special CSC membership drive was also held at the event. Adding to the fun, there also were stage performance and inflatable games.

Many participants took part in the free fitness assessment walk to find out their fitness level. After completing a brisk 2 km walk along the cinder track in the stadium, their timings and heart rates were recorded to help determine their fitness indexes. In the sports hall, there was a different aerobic workout. Held for the first time at the carnival and conducted by a trained instructor, Bike Spinning combines music, education and equipment to allow the participants to have a uniquely different experience while exercising on bikes. The exercise improves cardio-vascular fitness and effectively burns up calories.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the fun and exciting telematches. Participants let their hair down and had fun manoeuvring through the many obstacles, testing their teamwork and co-ordination. After a close fight, it was the Land Transport Authority that won the telematch competition, beating 19 other teams from 12 agencies to come out on top, and walked away with $500 in cash prizes. Team convener Darren Chen said that their experience at last year’s telematches helped to prepare them so they could strategise properly. He credited his team’s teamwork and clear communication for their win, and added that he was glad of the support from his agency’s management.

Rounding up the event, was a mass aerobic workout and a lucky draw. In the end, everyone enjoyed themselves tremendously and look forward to next year’s Carnival.
