FireInspections

Beginning on February 3, 2020 and continuing over the next several months, the City of Naples Fire Inspector will be inspecting all hangars at APF, including those which are privately-owned.

Some common items of concern that are found in t-hangars and condo hangars include:

Unpermitted structures (e.g. loft)

Woodworking materials and/or equipment

Improper use of extension cords and use of unattended extension cords

Storage of flammable and/or combustible materials (e.g. oily rags, cardboard boxes)

Unpermitted electrical modifications and/or overloaded electrical circuits

Obstructing an exit door

Questions? Contact the Leasing Office at [email protected] or (239) 643-0733.

ElectricalRepairs On February 5, 2020 Florida Power and Light (FPL) will be performing repairs in coordination with airport staff, which will require the electri-cal service to the north end of general aviation ramp to be turned off. The loss of power will affect hangars in 2500 and 2600 buildings, the Naples Executive Condominium Hangar Num-ber One hangars and the north self-service fuel tank.

Self-service fuel will be available at the south end of the GA ramp, across from the Pilot Lounge.

TextingandDrivingSince January 1, 2020, law enforcement officers can write citations for texting while driving, which carry fines as well as three (3) points on the driver’s record for a first offense.

As a reminder, cell phone use is not permitted while driving airside.

ComingSoon!Construction of the new Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) station began in December. Watch for the roof to be in place before March. The project is anticipated to be completed by summer 2020.

ATCTRenovations The kick-off meeting to design the reworking of the interior spaces was held at the beginning of January. The actual construction completion date for the improvements will be affected by a number of factors, which include the timing of construction permits and the availability of FAA-required equipment for installation

NorthGARampRehabThe engineering and design work required for the rehabilitation of the north general aviation ramp, including all of the pavement between the 2000 hangars, is underway. This challenging project will require a complex construction phasing plan in order to minimize the impacts to airport users while ensuring that appropriate safety protocols are followed. Construction is anticipated to be completed between July and November, 2020.

SpotlightonAirportPilotShopThe Airport Pilot shop sells a myriad of items, many of which cater to the pilots for which it’s named: headsets, training materials, sunglasses, and even uniform separates. However, the Pilot shop is a resource for the whole community. They offer snacks, souvenirs, gifts and even toys for little travelers alongside a testing center for those pursuing licenses or certifications for a variety of careers. The choice of offerings is very delib-erate; limited by space, the shop regularly asks customers what they would like to see. But, like all of Naples, business is cyclical. In response to that demand, the shop established a website with more than 8,000 items available for shipping to customers worldwide.

“We’re very community-oriented,” Frank says of the shop. They work with two local high school aviation programs, Immokalee and Lely, to provide private pilot and drone pilot testing. “These kids are so creative now, they’re wanting to use these drones to film their school football games,” says Frank, admiringly. The shop also administers other computer-based tests for everything from crane op-erations to nursing.

“I love being part of this community,” says Frank, who at his core is a small-business man. He’s owned a few other small businesses and he’s worked for huge, multi-million dollar corporations, but in the end being a small business owner has his heart. “Things are fascinating and instant here,” he says. “When I want to make a decision, it just happens - no deliberating for hours. And, I always feel really good about what I’m putting out into the world.” Frank also believes in having a solid team around you. “You’ve got to have good people, and there’s been good people working here for years. They know the customers and the business, and that’s what makes everything tick.”

“If I could ask for anything though,” says Frank, “it would be better publicity.” Although known fondly to many, the Airport Pilot Shop is, unfortunately, still a bit of a hidden gem tucked away between a mail station and the NAA Leasing and Badging Office. “Just this past week,” Franks says, “a guy comes in, says he’s been coming to the airport for ten years and never even knew this place existed.” The man was drawn into the shop hoping to purchase a Naples Aviation t-shirt that he saw displayed in the FBO lobby. In a recent part-nership with the Airport, the Airport Pilot Shop began selling branded merchandise, which is one of many decisions that will hopefully continue to draw in new customers for years to come.

You can visit the Airport Pilot Shop 8:30 am - 5:00 pm in the Airport Office Building located at 200 Aviation Dr. North, just north of the GA terminal, or shop online at https://www.airportpilotshop.com.

NaplesAirportEmployeeoftheYearPlease join us in congratulating Whitney Piett, Customer Service Coordinator for Naples Aviation, on being selected as the 2019 Naples Airport Authority Employee of the Year. Though she was surprised by the honor, Whitney is pleased to know her strong work ethic and contributions to the FBO team have earned her the respect of her peers.

While she grew up in Naples, Whitney has only been with the NAA since May of 2018; but in that short time has gone above and beyond to prove herself a true asset to customers and staff alike. Her colleagues describe her as kind, knowledgeable, hard-working and always willing to take on extra shifts or tasks.

Whitney, who has worked in aviation for more than a decade, easily finds enjoyment and excitement in the job because each day brings something different while still being part of a small, tight-knit community. She  recalls  running  into  people  she  hasn’t seen  in  ten  years,  but when  they walk  in  the  door,  there  is  instant

recogni on. She marvels that, “You never know when you’re gree ng

a plane and the door drops, if it’s (going to be) someone you know.”

Her enthusiasm extends to both passengers and crew. “Most of our owners who live here really are awesome people,“ she gushes. She further explains that it’s a very social job that involves talking to people all day. Sometimes she has to lift a lot of heavy bags, sweat, and get a little dirty, but all in all, it’s a lot of fun.

Whitney, who did a brief stint in accounting before being lured back to aviation by former co-worker and FBO manager, Mike Hushek, is always thinking about ways to improve and grow professionally. She feels fortunate to work for a company that encourages that and provides opportunities for career development and advancement.

While she remains uncertain as to where her future will ultimately take her, she’s currently focused on doing her part to ensure service excellence at Naples Aviation. “For some, it’s their first and only trip to Naples,” she says. When customers are greeted planeside, their luggage is appropriately handled, and their cars are delivered to them, she regards each interaction as an opportunity to make customers happy and leave a positive, lasting impression.

Whitney demonstrates a true passion for her work and embodies the NAA’s vision of, “Connecting people to the Paradise Coast though an exceptional airport experience.”. Congratulations, Whitney!
