Message From Administration
Welcome back everyone! We do hope that you had an opportunity to spend some
quality time with your family and friends during the holiday season.
The month of December allowed us the opportunity to gather as a community and
to celebrate together. The Advent Mass was a great success. I would like to thank
all families, students and teachers who attended this Mass, which made it a huge success. A special
thank you goes to Mrs. Bennett, Mrs. Cornett-Ching and Mr. Newton for helping prepare music for
both the Mass and the wonderful Christmas Carols performed by our Choir students. If you were
there you know how beautiful the Choir sounded, which helped us kick-off the Christmas season.
Also, thank you to all families who donated money and/or books to help support St. Peter School. We
raised a total of $918.00 for our partner school!
The 2017 Junior High Christmas concert and the spectacular Drama per-
formance, Christmas in the Land of OZ, were also huge successes. Thank
you to Mr. Panteluk, Mrs. Quartararo and all teachers, students and parents
involved in these productions. Thank you, also, to all the incredible parent volunteers who decorated the
school and organized our fantastic 2017 Christmas Family Dance.
We are now ready to begin the second half of our school year together,
and we look forward to new learning, exciting activities and new friend-
ships. Our youngest and our oldest students will encounter some great changes in the coming months.
The grade 9 students have begun the transition process into Senior High. There will be many Open
House opportunities and presentations from various schools. Our kindergarten students will also be
transitioning into a full day of school for Gr.1 next year. Please watch for information on a Gr. 1 Ori-
entation, which will happen in the spring to answer any questions and to help prepare for this transi-
tion.
This New Year is a time to look forward to new goals and challenges. Please take a few moments
with your child to set new goals for the remainder of the school year. Begin the conversation by ask-
ing your child what they could do to ensure continued success. This may involve academic work;
however, it could also involve other categories such as developing social skills, being more aware of
the needs of others, and trying to help those in need. It may also involve healthy lifestyle choices
such as eating better foods, helping the family to prepare healthy lunches, exercising at least three
times a week, and maybe cutting down on the amount of sugar eaten – less pop, treats and candy. We
still have another six months left of school so it’s not too late to start making a difference!
Finally, we will have a New Year celebration on Jan. 23rd starting at 1:30pm here at the school.
Please note there is also a Professional Development day for all teachers scheduled for Jan. 26th,
which means there will be no classes for K-9 students on this date; please mark your calendars.
I hope 2018 brings love, laughter and good health to you and your home.
Sincerely,
Mr. R. Paolozzi

Calendars for 2018-2019 School Year
The District Calendars for 2018-2019 are now finalized. The following calendar documents can be found at the district’s
Internet site at: https://www.cssd.ab.ca/Calendars/Pages/Default.aspx
Canteen News

School Zone Traffic Safety
The Safety of the children attending St. JOA is being seriously compromised because traffic laws are not being followed.
Community members and staff at St. JOA are very concerned.
We ask that you please consider your actions while driving within the school zone, the consequences of an accident could
be devastating.
Children learn what they see, please consider what they are learning and be sure to teach well:
Do you always use the cross walks?
It is not safe to stop in the middle of the street and allow your child to jump out into traffic.
Passing in a school or playground zone is against the law.
Bus zones are reserved for busses during school hours, even temporary or short term parking in these areas must be
avoided.
U-Turns in a school zone are not only illegal, but in a busy area like ours, they are very dangerous.
Cross walks need to be kept clear so they can be utilized when necessary. Vehicles are to be parked 5m from the cross-
walk.
We realize parking is very limited at St. JOA and traffic before and after school is very congested. The safety of the chil-
dren is always our first priority. Please drive safely!
“Ask, and it will be given you;”
Sandwich Friday
Our next Sandwich Friday will be Thursday, January 25, 2018. Junior High is still collecting donations as they
would like to provide a dinner rather than a breakfast for clients at the Drop-In Centre. We will also be having a
spirit day that day - Crazy Hair Day.
St. Peter’s School
A big thank you to the St. Joan of Arc Families who so kindly supported our Christmas collection for St. Peter’s
School. Together we raised $918.00 and collected a box of books. Our donation will help St. Peter’s School pro-
vide students with opportunities and programs that would not be available without our financial support.
Mission Mexico
Thank you to our St Joan of Arc Families who donated to Mission Mexico we raised $351.00 for this worthy
cause.
Children’s Hospital
The cast and crew of this year’s Drama production (Christmas in the Land of Oz) decided to donate the proceeds
from their play to the children’s hospital. They raised $568.
St. Michael’s Catholic Community Priest Visits St. Joan of Arc
St. Joan of Arc staff and students would like to acknowledge Father Pilmaiken for visiting some of our classes
prior to our Christmas break. He had been answering questions and discussing the Advent season with the stu-
dents. We look forward to more school visits in the new year.
