Principal’s Report / January 2017

Happy New Year to all! It feels good to be back at school and see the hallways

filled with boisterous, jubilant students. Although there are no field trips

planned for this month, there are still many events occurring and opportunities

for learning.

Our next School Council meeting is planned for Thursday January 19, and we

invite all interested parties to come out and attend. The next non-instructional

day will be on Friday January 27. The last day of semester one is January 31,

and report cards will be sent home with students on so please ask your student

about those report cards.

I would ask that you look at our web site for information and system survey on

the “Schools Impacted by New School Openings”. There are some recommen-

dations being made which will have an impact on John Ware School and it is

important for all parents to know about these changes. Please go to the follow-

be an open house at Nickle School on January 18 from 5-8 pm to discuss pro-

posed changes, so if you have questions or concerns, please plan to attend that

information session.

As the weather is unpredictable, please ensure your student is dressed adequate-

ly for the weather conditions. We have seen several cold days and want to en-

sure that students are prepared for the climate conditions.

This will be my last newsletter as principal of John Ware school and I want to

say thank you for your support and encouragement over the past year and a

half. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with this wonderful staff and great

students and meeting all of the parents at our various functions. John Ware is a

great school and I am proud to have been part of the ongoing legacy of this

wonderful learning institution.

Basketball

The basketball season has gotten off to a great start! All of our teams have been selected and their names are shown below.

Congratulations to all those who are now members of our John Ware basketball teams!

Once again, we have begun our season with our annual John Ware Tip-Off Tourney. What a wonderful display of team

effort and excitement was demonstrated by all our teams. Our Junior Girls and our Senior Boys teams won the division

championship in the tournament. Bravo and congratulations to them all!!!

Staff vs Student Hockey Game and Puck Toss Charity Event

Hello John Ware community. It was another successful year for the John Ware Puck Toss hockey

game and fundraising campaign. The students fought hard this year and held on for the majority of

the game, but the teacher team, aided by the youth of student teachers, were once again too much for

the students who fell 7-4, thus continuing the undefeated streak for another year. Kaitlyn P. graced us

with her voice singing O ’Canada while Isla L., Chloe S. and Mollie G. worked the score clock and

pumped up the music. Together with the support of the Calgary Flames organization and a few generous parents we

were able to give away some amazing prizes to our students who put in a lot of effort to scrape together their savings

and donate it towards a worthy cause. We were able raised $2,400 for the Alberta Children’s Hospital. It is great to see

a community come together for those in need. Thank you for everything you do to support John Ware and the Puck

Toss.

John Ware Students Giving This Season

This year, students and teachers had the opportunity to donate necessities of life to the “ Fill A Sock,

Fill A Need” campaign. John Ware students took on the challenge, donating toiletries, mitts, toques

travel mugs, gift certificates and stocking stuffers to the Calgary Drop-In Centre.

John Ware students and teachers gathered a total of 5759.25 points worth of items. The tally system was: 5 points for

each toiletry, 10 points for each set of mitts/socks or hats, and 5 points for each stocking stuffer. Money was also ac-

cepted. Jackets and food were also donated to the Drop-In Centre and the Calgary Food Bank.

Classes did their best to achieve their goal of collecting as many items as possible. Each grade in the school had one

class declared the winner depending on the number of points they accumulated. The winning classes received a free

period full of fun activities. . Congratulations go out to our winners this year, homerooms 7-2, 8-4 ,and 9-1.

We would like to thank everyone that made the campaign possible and so successful. This includes leadership students,

Ms. Burrows, Ms. Shyiak and all of those who donated. The campaign was a HUGE success this year, The Calgary

Drop-In Centre was honored and thrilled to receive approximately 6000 items! .
