We start the New Year finishing up some projects already in the works including more ‘Shop Parkrose’ banners around the district and our great branded reusable shopping bags.

Moving forward, we have been working with Historic Park-rose to bring business and marketing experts to speak to the group, via both our luncheons and quarterly coffee meetings. The first expert will speak to us about ways to make our busi-nesses more energy efficient (and save money!) at our next luncheon and then again February 26th at Elmer’s. The sec-ond is the storefront improvement expert that spoke to us at the ‘Changes are coming to Parkrose’ summit. She is sched-uled to speak to us in the spring. She will be analyzing and giving advice on storefront improvements for three of our Parkrose businesses. Anyone listening will get invaluable tips on how to apply these principals to their own business. Market your business by making a great first impression!

Much of my time is also spent visiting businesses, both members and non, in an effort to grow our association! November HighlightsNOVEMBER MEMBER MOMENT

Jason ZwickState Farm Insurance Agent

PBA Vice President Jason Zwick was spoke on behalf of State Farm Insurance at the November luncheon.

Jason informed the membership about an important and serious subject (insurance) while at the same time making it fun and interesting.

Bringing his assistant (daughter Avery) to hand out small foot-balls while Jason educated us all about some crucial decisions that could and should be made concerning insurance.

If you have insurance questions, Jason is more than happy to take your call. You can contact him at 503.287.6122 or maybe stop by his office at 4831 NE Fremont St. #1A, Portland 97213 for a cup of coffee and some information.

Announcements are a part of each luncheon and November was no exception.

President Michael Taylor opened the meeting with a salute to our American flag followed by each attendee introducing him or herself and business. Our mantra is “Businesses for Busi-ness” encouraging Parkrose Businesses to first do business with Parkrose businesses.

Wayne began with an announcement about the Silent Auction being held at the upcoming Annual PBA Holiday Event at the Holiday Inn Dec. 12th. The auction raises funds for scholar-ships. Wayne pointed out that receiving 40 applications and being able to select only four recipients is always heartbreak-ing. The auction and our pledges in the spring are crucial to the impact we can make in the lives of graduating Parkrose students.

The Grotto announced the Festival of Lights and performances by many groups going on through December at the Sandy Blvd site. This is a well-known popular event that is a must to include in your holiday celebrations.

Historic Parkrose is sponsoring a Christmas/Holiday Fair again this year. Many businesses and residents sign up to take part in this event while others come to do a little holiday shop-ping.

November is when PBA Membership votes to Board of Di-rector candidates.

Several candidates have graciously agreed to serve various terms, but must be voted on by the membership. The ballots were handed out to one representative from each business, then the counting of the ballots fell to PBA accountant William Keller, Treasurer Marsha Grabinger, and Vice President Jason Zwick. Jason reported that the slate of candidates as presented on the ballot was voted and accepted by the membership pres-ent.

PBA is proud to announce the 2015 PBA Board Members and look forward to an active and productive year.

The opportunity to bring a focus to your business is never passed up by PBA members as they provide a variety of door prizes each month.

Anticipating winning a prize is always fun, not to mention the chance to win cash money in the 50/50.

As always, many thanks to all who make this possible

Special Thanks

A special thanks to the Holiday Inn for hosting PBA and providing a delicious buffet lunch each month. Ray Salvi and Craig Mendenhall (right) can attest to that. Board member, Sharen Fowler, is head of Sales and Catering for Holi-day Inn and makes sure that all the details are taken care of.

We invite all to the monthly luncheons where the cost for the buffet, which includes dessert and gratuity, is an affordable $18.00. Cash, check or credit card is accepted.

Addie’s You and I Travel Service Addie Lindstrom, Owner

What does your busi-ness do/sell?

We are a travel agency specializing in busi-ness travel as well as vacations. My favorite clients are business people who travel of-ten, but there are oth-ers in the office who love to book vacations.

Did you purchase this business or start the business?

I started the business in 1980. Our first location was in an office building near NE Sandy and 82nd Ave. At one time we expanded to 13 employees in a downtown office, but later decided to downsize. I own the property at our cur-rent location, a bungalow at 7545 NE Sandy Blvd.

What inspired you to start your business?

I wanted to travel! I had a business background and had been arranging business travel for several years. One day I realized that I could do the booking better myself.

I have been to every major landmark in the world! I try to travel at least 2 – 3 times a year. India, Egypt and Ant-arctica are some of my favorites, but I will never go to the same place twice.

What makes your business unique?

We are always available and will never put our clients on hold. Business travelers love that reliability. I love to travel but try not to be away too long, so that I can be there for my clients.

What is the most interesting thing you’ve done in your life?

Being in the Galapagos Islands to see Lonesome George, the most rare turtle and creature in the world, before his death in 2012. You are so close to the animals in the Gala-pagos. They are right at your feet. It’s amazing. ~

Know Your Neighbor

Preparations are in the works for the upcoming Annual PBA Holi-day Event at the Holiday Inn.

Karen Taylor is busy putting together the “Wall of Wine”, and also filling a jar full of jelly beans for guests to spend a dollar or many

dollars to make a guess as to how many jelly beans are in the jar. Jason won last year and was sure he had the inside track to win again this year. We will see. Winner get 50% of total money collected for the guesses.

Sharen Fowler is sure a “Dessert Dash” will be a wel-comed event. There will be six desserts that tables will bid on. The table with the highest bid will get first choice. The table with the second highest bid will get to select second and so forth. Sounds fun and delicious.

Of course the Silent Auction will have lots of items for your early Christmas shopping so come prepared to bid high and often. Remember, it is for the scholarship fund.

At the December 12th Event, the 2015 PBA Directory will be unveiled and available to take home. The highlight of the evening is the presentation of the Karl Lind Award and the Artie Johnson Award. The awards will be presented to the recipients of 2014 by recipients of the awards in 2013. Jason Zwick and David Ashton are gearing up for those presentations.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidaysand a prosperous New Year to all!

MINUTES OF MEETING OF BOARD OF DIRECTORS PARKROSE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION

November 12, 2014

President Michael Taylor called the meeting to order at 7:10 a.m. The meeting took place at the Airport Holiday Inn, Portland, Oregon. Directors present included Wayne Stoll, Michael Taylor, Karen Taylor, Sharen Fowler, Marsha Grabinger, and Leo Porreco. Directors who were absent with approval included David Ableidinger and Jason Zwick. Kelly Brown was absent without an excused absence. Also attending the meeting were Katie S. Meyer, the Executive Director, Mark W. Eves as Secretary, and Alison Stoll as the representative to Venture Portland. Dave Borer attended the meeting as a prospective new Board member. Representatives of Pacific Power & Light also attended the first portion of the meeting.

The Directors approved the Minutes of the meeting dated October 8, 2014.

A Treasurer’s report was not presented. Marsha Grabinger agreed to send by email the financial statements by the end of the day. She did so.

No correspondence was circulated.

Katie Meyer reported on a number of recent activities including the following: that two new members have been ac-cepted; that she has been working hard with PGE and PP&L to install banners; and that she is working on a concept of quarterly seminars in 2015 with speakers on marketing. Continuing obstacles have presented themselves for the banners. It was learned that the Oregon Department of Transportation will not consent to our banners being on Sandy Boulevard.

Representatives of Pacific Power & Light attended the first portion of the meeting and provided detailed information regarding a proposed redesigned transfer station. The representatives were thanked for their participation in the meeting. The Board was asked whether it could endorse the new project. No opposition to the project was voiced. However, it was agreed that the input from the Parkrose Neighborhood Association is needed before a public endorsement is provided.

Karen Taylor reported that the speakers for the November meeting were all ready to go. She also provided a detailed report on the upcoming Holiday Event which is scheduled to take place on December 12, 2014, at the Holiday Inn.

The Board clarified the nominations for persons to be presented to the membership for election to serve on the Board of Directors and the terms of office for each Director as follows:

The Board approved the list of nominees and the above terms of office, in order to preserve the staggered terms contem-plated by the Bylaws.

The Board was reminded that the Holiday Event would take place at the Holiday Inn on the evening of December 12, 2014. All Directors were encouraged to locate silent auction and raffle prizes to be awarded at the Holiday Event.

Sharen Fowler reminded the Board members to provide reports of their volunteer hours.

The Board appointed a Budget Committee to prepare a first draft of the budget for the coming year which will be sub-mitted to the newly elected Board of Directors at their retreat in January of 2015. The members of the Budget Committee include Michael Taylor, Katie S. Meyer, Marsha Grabinger, and the accountant for the Association.

Alison Stoll provided a detailed report regarding the activities of Venture Portland and upcoming events. She an-nounced that a $3,000 grant has been provided by Venture Portland to PBA for the publication of directories and the purchase of enhanced PBA shopping bags. Alison Stoll provided very helpful information regarding the reasons why grant recipients have been selected. The Board extended their warm thanks to Alison Stoll for the enormous amount of time which she has spent in connection with representing us at Venture Portland.

There being no further business to conduct, the meeting was adjourned at 9:30 a.m.

Respectfully submitted:

“The amount of time that Alison dedicates to the PBA is astounding. She also does all of it without wanting any recognition. Alison exemplifies the Karl F. Lind Award”, says 2013 Karl Lind Award recipient. Alison is the go to writer for any grant PBA is applying for. Most recently: Banners, Soccer & Shopping Bags. I had the pleasure of working with Alison on the Venture Portland Soccer Grant. Never being a part of a grant process before, I tried to help, but Alison kept insisting that it would be easier and faster if she wrote the grant proposal and I just proofed it. Alison donated many hours working late into many night to complete the grants on time. Alison was on the PBA board of directors through 2013. We are fortunate that she has agreed to serve on the board in 2015.

Not only does she give the PBA many hours of service each month, she sits on the board or volunteers for Ride Connection, Ven-ture Portland Executive Committee, ONI committee, Venture Portland Grants, Comp Plan CIC, Hollywood Lions, Land use and transportation and the BAC steering Committee. PBA is grateful for Alison’s hard work, dedication and loyalty to the Parkrose area. We owe her a huge THANK YOU for the amount of work she puts in behind the scenes to keep the PBA moving forward.

What can we say about Karen?

We can say this, SHE IS A PISTOL!

Karen Taylor has taken on a lot of responsibility during the three years she has served as director on the PBA Board of Directors. She has scheduled speakers and Mem-ber Moments running into challenges along the way, but always with positive results.

At PBA events and many of the community events you will see

Karen organizing, helping, and taking on leadership roles to further the success of the Parkrose Business and Neighborhood Community. All this with being the wife of Mike, the mother of four, grandmother of many, and managing her own business, it appears the energy never stops.

Not only is Karen gifted and capable in so many ways, she is also more fun than anyone to work with. This award is presented to someone who has given many years of unselfish dedication along with a high level of excellence to PBA and the community. YES, Karen as met the criteria!

PBA is fortunate to be the recipient of Karen’s “ball of fire” enthusiasm and fun-loving personality.

2014 Awards and Recognition

President Mike Taylorshares his appreciation

for outstandingcontribution.

Mike honors 2014 PBA Officers Vice President Jason Zwick, Treasurer Marsha Grabinger, and Secretary Mark Eves with a President’s Award. Also presented with a 2014 President’s Award is Bridget Bayer, Historic Parkrose, Revitalized Manager, and PBA Executive Director Katie Meyer.

Laurie Larsen served as PBA/PBF bookkeeper for many years. Upon her retirement from that position, Mike thanks Laurie for the many years of volunteer hours spent managing the financial books for PBA with his President’s Award.

An annual traditional at the Christmas Party is Mark Eves collecting donations for the Salvation Army. Mark personally matches the night’s collection of $742.00 bring the total donation to the Salvation Army $$1482.00. Wayne (on the right) anxious to make his contribution, not to be outdone by granddaughter (on the left) who also enjoys the gift of giving.

Cathy Morris on the right was the lucky winner of the 50/50.

Sorry Jason, Karen says Brent Grabinger came the closest with not going over (406) to win the Jelly Bean contest.

Karen Taylor was totally shocked and taken completely by surprise to receive the Karl Lind Award! “I was telling my daughter all the things others have done and what an honor the award is, when I heard something about being married to Mike and realized “he’s talking about me!” I only knew Artie

a short time, only talked with her a few times. But I knew how highly regarded she was by all in PBA. I am hon-ored and humbled to be put into the same category with Artie. I never dreamed I would even be considered for this award. Thank you for this honor! “

The Silent Auction brought in $1700.00 for ScholarshipsThe Wall of Wine $170.00

Dessert Dash $338.00Jelly Bean Jar $20

Thanks again to the Debonnaires. There were many door prizes donated by Parkrose businesses.Thank you to Holiday Inn for the wonderful holiday buffet and dessert donation.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF BOARD OF DIRECTORS PARKROSE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION

December 10, 2014

President Michael Taylor called the meeting to order at 7:11 a.m. The meeting took place at the Airport Holiday Inn, Portland, Oregon. Directors present included Wayne Stoll, Michael Taylor, Karen Taylor, Sharen Fowler, Marsha Grabinger, David Ableidinger, Jason Zwick, and Kelly Brown. Leo Porreco had an excused absence. Also attending the meeting were Katie S. Meyer, the Executive Director, Mark W. Eves as Secretary, and David Borer as an elected member of the Board whose term will begin in January.

The Directors approved the Minutes of the meeting of the Board of Directors on November 12, 2014, and the minutes of the Special Meeting dated November 20, 2014.

Marsha Grabinger presented a Treasurer’s report. Most of the meeting involved discussion of the 2014 finan-cial performance and the budgeting for 2015. Concern was expressed that government subsidies granted to Historic Parkrose have enabled it to assume the traditional role of a business association. This has hampered the ability of PBA to expand its membership. It was decided that a more thorough review of the issue will be discussed in the upcoming Board of Directors retreat in January of 2015.

No correspondence was circulated.

Karen Taylor and Katie Meyer reported that speakers for the meetings in January through July of 2015 are largely in place.

The Board outlined the roles of each Director in the upcoming Holiday Event. The Event has received strong RSVP response.

David Ableidinger reported that there is a new website being used in the Parkrose District which provides information relating to local crime. Other Directors reported that there had been recent smash-and-grab break-ins to automobiles in which only the temporary registrations were stolen. Also, storage sheds have been broken into. A num-ber of merchants have reported the use of stolen gift cards.

Katie Meyer reported on her recent activities. She advised that she has found a source to pay for the most of the cost of the banners. Les Schwab has donated an additional $100 to cover a portion of the difference.

Sharen Fowler reminded the Board members to provide reports of their volunteer hours.

There being no further business to conduct, the meeting was adjourned at 9:30 a.m.
