The new year is well under way and the end of the school year will be upon us before we know it. For seniors, this means the beginning of an entirely new way of life as we transi-tion from high school to college. This past weekend I had the opportunity to travel to New York City for a college interview, and I absolutely fell in love! The diverse popula-tion and mixing of cultures, the many opportunities and sights to see, the energy and ambition that permeates the community; I left without a doubt that NYC is where I want to be. As you begin receiving admissions decisions from the various colleges you have applied to, remember to choose your future school for the right reasons, and use college as a way to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. With college so close in sight it’s extremely tempting to become careless and let your grades slip, but try to hang in there! See our story on page 25 for tips on staying motivated.

Also just around the corner is Valentine’s Day, and this month the Vibe has all the infor-mation you need to plan a perfect date and find the right gift for that special someone.

As always, we would love to hear from you! E-mail any questions, comments, or sugges-tions to [email protected].

Is Online School Right for you?

Have you ever considered taking any on-line classes? Different programs such as ECOT and Ohio Virtual Academy K12 are designed for students to learn from highly qualified teachers at any time of the day. ECOT was the first online charter school in the nation to have students graduate. These programs provide their students with a free computer and broadband internet connec-tion. Online schools provide the chance for busy students to graduate from high school, but there are some factors that may hinder a student’s decision to take this step.Kaylee Oiler, junior and Jared Hollings-head, junior, have come back at MHS after attempting to complete their high school studies online at home. While Oiler’s main goal in trying online studies was to gradu-ate early from school, Hollingshead’s par-ents encouraged him to do online schooling because he did not perform well the previ-ous school year. Both students chose Ohio Virtual Academy K12 based on the number of hours needed to complete the school requirements. Oiler explained that just like public school, you take the basic core classes, such as English, math and science.. She said it was easier for her to “focus on work and not get distracted.” Though this may have been a plus for her, other students like Hollings-head feel it is easier to become distracted.

Hollingshead mentioned that in the process of completing the required hours, the time was very lonely. Oiler found it difficult to stay in contact with her friends from pub-lic school, whereas Hollingshead came to visit MHS and kept in con-tact with his old friends. When asked if they would recom-mend online classes to others, Oiler replied, “It depends on your life-style. If you are good at learning on your own, online classes are good for you.” Though she only stayed with the program for a month, she said it was a good way to “realize you can’t take what you are given for granted.” She realized that on-line school was not the right option for her interest, so she enrolled back at MHS.

This year Marysville High School is offering an online Latin course for students wishing to further their studies in the language. These stu-dents have the opportunity to experi-ence the difference between learning through a teacher online and learn-ing from a teacher in a classroom. The course is offered through Florida Virtual School. Depending upon the kind of person you are, online classes could be a better option for you. Hannah Beil, junior, is currently en-rolled in Latin III at MHS. Since she only partakes in one online class, Beil has the opportunity to experience learning online and in a classroom. She explained that "you can work at your own pace and you don't ever have homework." Compared to learning online she feels that a “classroom teacher makes sure you know the material. An actual teacher makes different things more clear.” Motivation is the key to suc-cessful online schooling. Without a motive and someone telling you what to do, it is easy to forget about your work. “For me it’s a personal sense to get schoolwork done so you can do well in school,” says Beil. It is still possible to graduate through an online school. Statistics show that both ECOT and Ohio Virtual Acad-emy are below the Ohio standards for graduation rates while Ohio Connec-tions Academy, another online school,

is above the standard at an 89% graduation rate. Though people have many different views on online school, it is up to you to decide if online school is the right choice for you.Alex WarnerReporter

When February rolls around, finding the perfect gift for your girlfriend or crush might be a difficult task. Whether to buy flowers and chocolate or to think outside of the box, this ar-ticle can help you decide. After eight months of being in a relationship, Alexis Urbano, senior, says that she would like chocolate or jewelry for Val-entine’s Day. Haley Berkland, sophomore, said she would like “candy and maybe flowers,” after a relationship of four months. Morgan Thompson, sophomore, who is in a two month rela-tionship, said that she would like flowers along with a stuffed animal and candy. It is evident that the length of time you are in a relationship will determine the present that you get your boyfriend/girlfriend. Each of the girls were asked if they agreed and they all responded the same, yes. Urbano, who said that she would like to receive the more

expensive gift out of the three girls, jewelry, is the longest relationship. Berkland and Thompson, who both said they would like simpler, less personal gifts, have not been in a relationship quite as long. Although it may seem like it, being in a longer relationship doesn’t always mean that you should spend more money on your girlfriend/boyfriend. A gift will be the most ap-preciated if it is one that comes from the heart. A simple, but thoughtful homemade gift can sometimes be more romantic than one that was based on the price. Ideas such as dinner/dessert, a customized card, or a couple picture. If you don’t know what to get your girlfriend, remember that it is the thought that counts. A simple dinner date or just a day spent with each other would be much appreci-ated by most.Whatever you would choose will be appreci-ated, as long as your valentine’s interests are in mind.

Lauren MogielnickiReporter

For Her...

Valentine’s Day is a time for love and happiness between couples and establishing future relationships. However, sometimes choosing the right gift for him can be a real challenge. Often, simple items can be the best things to give.Patric Scheiderer, senior, says receiving candy or chocolate would be an ideal gift for him for Valentine’s Day. A popular question always is “Does the length of the relation-ship determine the present?” Mr. Smith explains “absolutely, the stuff I get my wife is more expensive than what I got my high school girlfriend.” Deciding how much to spend is also a common concern. Kyle Poling, senior,

who has been in a relationship for two years says, “ I’d spend around $20.” Of course there are many ways to keep Valentine’s Day nice and cheap; guys are easy to shop for. A popular gift item of course is always candy: Butterfingers, Reese’s, M&Ms etc. Guys love candy. Another route to go would be their favorite food or dessert; guys love to eat. Many guys would also just be happy with spending the holiday with their significant other and just relaxing. Whether or not you decide to keep it cheap or expensive, candy never fails for guys on Valen-tine’s Day.

Valentine’s DayDates

If you want to see a movie then you could see the soon to be released Warm Bodies, Safe Haven, or Beautiful Creatures. Warm Bodies will be released on Feb.1. Safe Haven and Beautiful Creatures are both coming out on Feb. 14. Valentine’s day is on a Thursday this year and we do not have school on that Friday or the next Monday. If you are single you could use this long weekend as an opportunity to get away for the weekend with a group of friends. Fort Rapids is an indoor water park in Columbus is a good place to go for the weekend or even just one night. This Valentine’s Day Kazmierc-zak advices, “To all of the single people out there, no matter what don’t give up. Mister or misses right will come and find you. So don’t give up on love.”

Hannah WhitefordReporter

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, Feb. 14 can be the best day or the worst day for people. Finding a unique date to make the day special can be stressful. It is easy for dates to go from great to awful. The worst date that Tessie Titus, freshman, went on was when she went bowling. Titus says, “I went to bowl and my date ran up and hugged me and instead of hugging we fell into the lane.” Sophomore, Hunter Kazmierczak’s awful date memory was when the date got rudely interrupted by friends. Kazmierczak says, “ When I took him to a dance, we ate next door at Papa Johns. A group of friends of ours came and started asking us awkward questions...to embarrass both of us!” Titus and Kazmierczak have their share of good dates too. When asked what his favorite date was, Kazmierczak shared, “I picked him up and took him to see a movie...I walked him home under the starry sky. I did the typical American dream and kissed him on his doorstep.” Titus stated that her most memorable date was when “I went to his house and he got popcorn and we watched chick flicks.” For this Valentine’s Day Titus wants to “go and watch a scary movie.” Kazmierczak claims that if he could do anything he was this Valentine’s Day he would “walk around town and talk about life. We could walk the trail behind the high school and let the hours melt away, just enjoying each other’s company. Hopefully it is warm enough out to do so. If I save enough money we could go out to eat.” If you cannot afford to spend money on a date, Titus advises that you take “a walk in the park.” Some other inexpensive date ideas are cooking dinner at home and watching a movie on the couch or playing board games. If you want to go on a memorable date you could go and see Romeo and Juliet at the Ohio Theater on Feb. 14 at 7 pm. The Ohio State men’s basketball team has a game against The Northwestern Wildcats on Feb. 14 at 7 pm. There is also an Ohio State men’s hockey game versus Western Michigan University on Feb. 15 at 7 pm. Other suggestions for Valentine’s dates include going to Marysville Lanes, Chiller Ice Rink, Magic Mountain, COSI, or Sky Zone, the indoor trampoline park. Sky Zone is open on Fridays 12-9 pm, Saturdays 10 am-10 pm, Sunday 12-8pm. and Tuesday- Thursday 3-8pm. Thirty minutes of jumping cost $8, 60 minutes is $12, 90 minutes is $16, and 120 minutes is $20.

ties to deal with their stress about low self esteem and a negative body image, according to DoSomething.org. Danielle Lord, freshman, also opened up about her negative body image. Instead of immersing herself in negative energy, she stated, “I just listen to mu-sic.” Having a positive body image is an important achievement that not all teenage girls can admit to having. When you choose to see your body with a positive attitude, you can become confident, boost your self esteem and increase your overall mental health.* To find out more information about low self esteem in teens, go to DoSomething.org and check out their facts.

Kennedy LenhartReporter

Your body image reflects how much you actually care about beauty and how attractive you perceive yourself. Everyone has a body image; everyone has feelings about how they look and how they would like to look. Focusing on the female body image, Erika Flynn, junior, says she “looks at the positive side” of her body image. “I don’t always let myself down,” Flynn continued to say. Although Flynn and many oth-ers see the positive side of their body image, Holly Obenour, freshman, doesn’t. When asked about her own body image, she says, “I just have a low self esteem,” which is a extremely common problem in teenagers, and Obenour is not alone. About 25 percent of teenage girls admit to having a low self esteem, and 75 percent of those girls reported engaging in negative activi-

It’s Not Just a “Girl Thing”

My eyes are too small, my arms are too big, my legs are too short, my nose is too long. Everyone has things about their body they wish they could change. Most people consider thinking too much about one’s own physical appearance a “girl thing.” But is that always the case? Some males consider their outward appearance an important part of their daily lives. Freshman Jake Urbano says “Guys should care about how they look. But just because you care doesn’t mean you have to obsess over it.”A person with a healthy body image does not “ob-sess” over their appearance. Someone with a positive view on their own body probably has a higher self esteem than someone who does not view their body in a positive way. Having a high self esteem plays a large role in the way a person sees their body, whether they be male or female. Urbano agrees, say-ing that having a high self esteem is “important for both sexes.”Jeffrey Book, junior, also agrees with this statement. However, Book does not believe that guys should stress too much about their appearance. Book states that he doesn’t feel any pressure to look a certain way. “The most pressure I feel to look nice is from my sister,” says Book with a laugh. Urbano dis-agrees, stating “Of course there’s pressure. But if you stay fit and exercise you won’t have to worry about it as much.” Sophomore Jordan Payne sides with Urbano on this topic. He says “Yeah, there’s

definitely pressure. But as long as I look decent, I’m okay. I don’t have to look perfect.”Whether or not there is pressure felt about having to look a certain way as a male, there is a certain way every male says he should look. When asked for their perception of how the male body should look, “big and muscley” are the exact words uttered from almost every male that was interviewed. When you take a closer look at it, guys really aren’t that much different from girls. Most still feel pres-sure to look good for others and for themselves. There is still a certain way they feel they need to look, even if its different from “tan and skinny.”Guys should also know that it is important to like the way you look. Everyone has something about their body they wish was different, but chances are, those things aren’t worth changing. If your lack of confidence relating to your body stems from weight, that is a factor that can be changed. But some things can’t be changed. Book believes, “If it’s something you can fix, you should try. But if you can’t fix it, don’t worry about it. It probably doesn’t really need fixed.”Seeing your body in a positive way isn’t just impor-tant for girls. It’s important for both sexes.Guys shouldn’t feel embarrassed of the way their body looks, nor should they be afraid to feel con-cerned about their appearance. There are so many ways to look at your body positively, and it’s impor-tant not only for your total self esteem, but for your overall happiness, whether you are female or male.

· Speak positively about yourself- Tearing yourself down over things that you can’t change will do you no good. If you can change it and want to, then do it for yourself.· Be realistic and healthy- When making goals to change yourself, be sure to set your mind to things that you know are in your reach and affect you in more of a positive way, not a negative one· Don’t listen to the media- No one is perfect. When you look at a magazine and see a “perfect” model, keep in mind that most of the time they actually are Photoshopped.· Stop comparing yourself to others- You are not the same as anyone else, and that is OK. “Today you are You, that is truer than true. No one alive is Youer than You.” Dr. Seuss· Don’t ignore your inner-self- Media may play a huge part in the way you feel about yourself, but you do too. If you think you are able to change, then you are and you can.

Maintaining Healthy Skin During the Dry Winter Months

According to Mrs.Kelly, science teacher, “washing your pillow cases every so often can get rid of bac-teria left from your face.” It’s true, even little things like leaving makeup on your face overnight can, over time, create blemishes due to clogged pores. Also, be sure to drink lots of water, roughly eight glasses a day. Keeping yourself hydrated can help maintain a healthy complexion.

Although some are more prone to acne than oth-ers, we all can benefit from taking better care of our skin, especially in the winter. Buckeye Dermatology suggests moisturizing your face twice daily during the winter because the air is so dry. Dalton Driscoll, senior, agrees, “I don’t have to use as much moistur-izer in the summer.”

If maintaining clear skin is at the top of your priority list or is a big problem for you, never feel embarrassed for considering seeing a dermatologist. “It’s worth it,” states Driscoll. “Ninety-nine percent of us don’t have a perfect complexion.” Dermatologists are likely to pre-scribe medication and/or topical cremes, so be sure to follow their instructions strictly to clear up your skin.

As teens, our hormones are extremely active: changing and moving inside of us constantly. But our hormones don’t just change what happens on the inside of our bodies: our skin is directly affected by our hormones. Acne and blemishes are extremely common in teenagers. Although we can’t change our hormones’ behavior, we can change what they do to our skin.

Who Wants to bWhat if I told you that with a little bit of saving and a lot of patience you could turn a relatively small amount of money into enough to fund your life dreams with little to no work? To let the opportunity pass by would be foolish! Through different saving and investment options, this dream can become a reality. Time is the biggest factor in how much money you’ll make, so the key is to get started now. The financial world can be a bit daunting, but have no fear, this month the Vibe breaks everything down for you, so you can make the right decisions for your goals and needs.

Types of FundsYou probably have some type of checking or savings account in which you deposit money and it accrues a small amount of interest each year, usually only enough to keep up with inflation. While it is secure, this is not the way to make your money work for you. That is not to suggest you should have no ac-cessible savings, simply that you should allocate a portion of your money to a different type of account to receive maximum benefits.

Choosing an investment option which yields a higher average return rate, for example, the stock market’s average 11 percent, allows you to build up a much greater savings over time. The important part is that you start early! “Mathematically it can be shown that it is much better to begin saving as early as possible,” says Mr. Holton, MHS retiree, “Com-pound interest is a remarkable thing!” A smaller investment now could still bring in more money in the long run than a larger sum of money invested later. Take a look at the table below for a better understanding of this concept:

This chart which demonstrates the benefits of compound interest and investing early. In this scenario Marge invests $1,000 each year from the time she turns 15 until she is 30, investing a total of $15,000. Homer, on the other hand, invests $5,000 each year from age 35 to 65, investing a total of $150,000. Though Homer made a much greater investment for a longer period of time, Marge still comes out with more money at age 65. It all comes down to one key difference:: time.

Thanks to the Motely Fool for the chart!

Who Wants to b e a Millionaire? The Vibe’s guide to makin g your money work for you.

For those who want to grow their money with minimal work...

For those who want to go above and beyond...

To make compound interest work in your favor with little to no work, consider investing in a mutual fund. When you invest in a mutual fund, your money as well as the money of thousands of others is given to an investment company who then makes investment decisions on your behalf. You then receive dividends of the profits proportional to the amount of money you have invested with them in relation to other members of the fund. A common mistake is to assume that since mutual funds are managed by trained professionals, your money will be in good hands. This is not always the case. According to Motley Fool, more than 80 percent of mutual funds underperform the markets average, and most have some type of fee for investing with them. However, by investing in an index fund, you guarantee coming out even with the markets average return, though eliminating your chances of exceeding it. With an index fund, a huge number of investors put their money into a portfolio which contains shares of stock in the market’s top 500 to 5,000 companies. Unlike a mutual fund where you must pay the salaries of active portfolio managers and financial analysts, there are little to no fees for investing in a mutual fund because the companies in which you invest are already determined and require little monitoring. If interested, it is important to note that many companies require a minimum investment, so this might require some saving. In order to open this type of ac-count visit www.Vangard.com to get started.

Another option is to open your own brokerage account which you self-manage. This can be done through sites such as E*Trade or Ameritrade. Many websites require that you are anywhere from 18 to 21, or otherwise have a custodian presiding over the account. With this type of investing you are in complete control. You choose which companies you invest in, how much is invested there, and when you buy and sell your stocks. It may seem simple, but if you wish to make money rather than lose money it’s important that you do your research. A lot of people make the mistake of attempting to invest in the “next big thing” which ends up being only a brief sensation, meaning the prices of the company’s stock soars for a while before tank-ing, leaving you with a huge loss on your investment. Instead, you should take the time to research the companies you are interested in thoroughly, finding out how they’re run, the people behind them, etc. and then place your money only in companies with which you have total confidence. One of the world’s most successful investors Warren Buffet advises, “Don’t buy any stock in a company that you wouldn’t be comfortable holding if the market shut down for ten years.” The idea of investing is not to buy and sell right away. Not only is this a bad strategy, but most times you are charged a fee of at least $10 for each trade you make taking away from your net profits. The bottom line if you are interested on taking on the challenge yourself is:

1. Make sure you know your companies and place your money only in companies you have long-term confidence in.2. Hold your stock in a certain company until you feel they are no longer of good quality. Stocks will go down from day to day. That is a simple reality. How-ever, it is their long term success that is of greater significance.3. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If a mutual fund or company is reporting 40 percent gains each month or even year, chances are it’s not go-ing to last and there is something going on behind-the-scenes that will eventually lead to your demise. Think through each investment and if the returns seem logical.4. Realize that you will make mistakes. Investing in the stock market is risky business, but can come with great reward if your grow and learn from each experience. The best part about starting young is that you can afford to mess up a time or two and still end up with a significantly more money than you started with.

Deciding where to place your money can be quite the challenge. “Think big but start small,” says Holton. “Most people are working and can save a little some-thing each month, especially if you start before you get bogged down with bills.” Mr. Holton recommends speaking to at least three advisors before making any decisions. “Where practical, I like to deal with someone locally. I feel more comfortable dealing with someone I know. I think we have several people in the area that would do an excellent job of offering that service.”For MHS students this person could be last year’s graduate Jordan Tank, a freshman at OSU majoring in marketing management with a job at an investment firm Dublin. Again, Tank emphasizes the importance of starting early. “Time is the ultimate determining factor in investing and making a large profit. Let’s say, for instance, someone put away $2,000 in a mutual fund that’s getting 11 percent interest per year from age 20 to 40, while another person used that same mutual fund only they did it from age 30 to 40 but contributed $4,000 (twice what the other person put in). Many people think that this is equivalent, but in all actuality, the person who put away less money for a greater period of time with end up with millions more than the person who invested for a shorter time.” He is also quick to point out that when making investment decisions that it is important to note, “Just because it [a mutual fund or company] can [earn you a certain return rate] doesn’t mean it will. It’s all about what kinds of stocks and bonds you incorporate into that investment.”While this is a lot of information to take in, if you want to be well on your way to a comfortable life, take the first step today and do some research. There is even a sidebar which offers some great resources to get you started. We live in a world full of credit card debt and overwhelming student loans. Take your financial freedom into your own hands and let’s break this cycle!

Living Gluten FreeGluten-free diets seem to be on the rise lately, but are people doing it for the right reasons? Gluten-free diets originated in Hollywood when celebrities started to try it, but should you? Can this new trend re-ally help you lose weight or should you stay away? To start with, gluten is shorthand for a fami-ly of storage proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. The gluten proteins are found in the mature seed of these cereal grasses, which is what we refer to as grain. While oats do not technically contain gluten, they are almost always cross-contaminated with wheat glu-ten due to processing methods. As a result, unless oat-containing product is specifically labeled “gluten-free,” one should assume it contains gluten. Gluten can also be found in bread, pasta, cookies, and pizza crust. Many gluten-free users adopts this diet for medical reasons.

How would a person know if they are gluten-intolerant? “Blood tests,” says TJ Borowski, junior, who suffers from a gluten allergy. Madison Brandfass, sophomore, eats gluten free because she has Celiac Disease. Celiac Disease is a digestive condition triggered by the protein gluten. If people with Celiac Disease consume glu-ten, they experience an immune reaction in their small intestine, causing damage to the inner surface of the small intestine and an inability to absorb certain nutrients. The decreased absorption of nutrients that oc-curs with celiac disease can cause vitamin deficiencies that deprive your brain, periph-eral nervous system, bones, liver and other organs of vital nourishment. Brandfass says that if she does consume gluten, she can get sick. Brandfass would not recommend trying this lifestyle to people who are not allergic. It is not a diet that makes you skinny, the sub-stitutes can be fattier than the original.

Page 21: January Vibe

Mrs. Hinderer has a son who also partici-pates in gluten-free eating. Her son, Eli, has turned the whole family into gluten-free eaters. She comments on why people are trying this trend without medical purpos-es: “It is healthier. We, as a whole, eat way too much, even more than we should. Ath-letes do it [gluten-free diets] to make their bones healthier and stronger. Should the average person without a medical diagnosis try eating gluten-free? “It’s hard,” says Hin-derer. “Lots of things have gluten, even the things that aren’t listed. There is even hid-den gluten, like anything that has crumbs of bread. You can’t use the same toaster as something with a gluten allergy. You have to change everything, even the butter con-tainer you use.” Would you recommend it? “It is worth trying. It is a pain, you have to plan everywhere you go. It is expensive be-cause you have to buy replacement foods, but if you do it without the replacements then you will be fine.

It is evident hat people have conflict-ing views about whether to try eating gluten-free. A nurse at Primary Care in Marysville would not advise anyone to try the gluten-free diet that is not allergic. She said that eating in moderation, eat-ing healthy and getting lots of sleep is the ideal way to lose weight, not any new fad.If you are planning on going gluten-free and are worried about eating while out, many restaurants have gluten-free menus upon request. Some are Bob Evans, BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse, Boston’s, and more. You can find a full list at http://www.glutenfreegang.org/RESTAU-RANTS.htm .

LIFE CHEAT CODES:

Must Be The MoneyThe first, (really important!) thing you should remem-ber is how to save your money. It’s perfectly fine to make a small, thoughtful gift for a friend. They are just as good as the huge, expensive ones, if not better. Also, Amazon.com is your friend. Online shopping can save you more money than you think. That phone case you just bought for 20 bucks at the mall? Same case on Amazon for $7.99. (Maybe.) Lastly, always be prepared for unexpected spending days. You never plan for a flat tire or fender bender, but having that back up money will save a lot of time and stress.

The ClimbStaying healthy and fit is always on our minds. How-ever, the word “diet” makes us think of hiding from carbs and counting calories. In reality, consuming smart carbs such as whole grain bread, can improve your mood and memory. Ashley, the athletic trainer at MHS, advises students just beginning to work out to “start slow because you know your body best.” Walking for minutes a day can burn calories! Another diet myth is the idea that girls shouldn’t lift weights. No girls, you will not instantly have huge biceps and back muscles. Many personal trainers advise that both genders “hit that weight room.” Studies show that lifting weights speeds up metabolism and tones muscles. Who doesn’t want that?

We all say it. “Man, I wish I would have known that earlier!” Wouldn’t life have been just awe-some if you knew half the things you know now? Well, I’m here to do just that and hit some basic lessons everyone should know.

Is it who or whom?January is usually the month of college applications. Katelyn Karcher, junior, worries about improving her ACT score and writing the perfect college essay. The best advice comes from our own guidance of-fice. They suggest all students to check out the many scholarships on our school website. It’s important to remember that you can always improve your ACT score... by studying for it! That’s right, our guidance office has many books for students. These books have hundreds of practice questions and essays. When writing college essays, never attempt to be someone you’re not. Believe it or not, colleges actually want to get a sense of who you are. Really, they want to learn more about the person they’re deciding on. Put your own style and voice into it. Write about something not a lot of other students would have experience with. Stand out!

Let’s Be FriendsWith all the social media of today’s society, it’s easy to lose friends over dumb statuses or tweets. We all know that situation... Mrs. McConoughey, English teacher, has a few words of advice for those that are having friend issues. She explains the importance of “allowing your friends to have other friends. Jealousy can break a friendship faster than you think!” You might think making new friends here at MHS can be difficult because of the fact that you’ve been with the same group of students for as long as you can remem-ber. However, the best way to make new friends is to simply start a conversation with someone! Like many aspects in life, we are so worried we’ll be rejected. But in reality, taking the time to strike up a conversation about the big game last night or how you’re so ob-sessed with Fat Amy can turn into a great friendship. Go outside your small circle of friends. Anything can happen!

LIFE CHEAT CODES: What Every Student Should Know

Your InterviewSo you’re looking for a job? Whether it be a high school, part-time job, or a career after college, Mrs. Kelly, science teacher, suggests that you always look presentable. Don’t be afraid to “talk yourself up,” as well. The employer wants to know why you would be a great candidate for this job. Pre-paring a well thought out resume can boost your chances of employment greatly. Also, the most important aspect of job hunting is never showing up late! If you’ve never been to the company before, allow for a lot of time to get there. Showing up early proves that you are highly interested in this position and know how to manage your time.

The Check Engine LightLastly, with the middle of the winter season upon us, knowing about your own car can mean the difference between $10 and $1,000. Jake Bresnahan, senior, recom-mends that students learn to check their cars’ fluids. He explains that, “learning how to check and change your own oil and other fluids can save you a great deal of mon-ey in the long run.” Also, safe driving is a must this season. Studies show that most teenage car accidents occur due to driver distractions. That means put the phone down! You might think it would never happen to you, but the truth is that it can happen to anyone. The key to staying out of ac-cidents is driving slowly. The more time you give yourself to react to your situation, the more chances you have of correcting it in a safe manner.

There you have it.. You now hold information that many students do not even know exists. Maybe you have your own cheat-codes? Great! Share them with your friends you just made. Tell yourself you will save enough money to buy that gorgeous prom dress. Or, better yet, swap dresses with a friend so you don’t have to shell out money for a dress you’ll never wear again. But most importantly, make the best of any situation. Who knows what could happen.

CHECK IT OUT!The average ACT score is a composite score of 21.In 2011, 23% of car accidents involved cell phones. That’s 1.3 million collisions. Appalachian State University explains that exercising in the morning is more beneficial than exercising in the afternoon or later. In 2010, 73% of part-time college students held jobs.

Boys Fashion 101It is hard sometimes for guys to pick out an outfit that will look good on them specifically. Girls, on the other hand, have it so much easier because girls have role models to look at and copy their image. In maga-zines there are blonde hair, red hair, and dark hair, so it isn’t hard to find someone who looks like you in a magazine. However, guys have a limited selection of models to aspire. With all the different ethnicities and hair colors it’s hard to find what colors “fit you”. Guys don’t always pay attention to what color can make them look their best. Beauty & Style. com helps girls and guys de-termine their best color.

Blondes for example, look best in bright but warm colors. If you’re a blonde guy, creams and oranges look the best with the lighter complex-ion. If you think you might be a light brown or dirty blonde, faded colors and pastels are what to aim for when picking out clothes.

With all the ‘tall, dark, and handsome’ guys out there, your best bet is to compliment your dark hair with dark greens and blues to really add contrast to your appearance. Now if your hair is jet black great colors for you are dark purples, and bright reds to emphasize your complexion.

Last, but certainly not least, for all the wonderful redheads out there, you are blessed with a great color of hair. You need to aim for greens and warm shades of brown, redheads look the best in earth tones, such as browns, pale blues, and beige. If you are more the strawberry blonde redhead, you can pull off aquas, greens, and golden yellows to even out the red tone.

There are more to picking out clothes than the color or style. You have to know how to dress for your body type, and know what can make you look best.

Boys Fashion 101 How Rookie Quarterbacks Are Changing The “Standard” In The NFL

The quarterback, the most important player on the team, the difference between winning and losing. In the past five years the quarterback position has been a throw- only style. Rookie quarterbacks can now run the ball and throw the ball accurately. Andrew Luck (Colts) has taken a 2-14 team into an 11-5 team in only one year. Luck has thrown the ball 537 times, ranked second in the NFL. He ran the ball for touchdowns 5 times for a total of 255 yards.Robert Griffin III (Redskins), the first pick in the 2012 NFL draft, has taken a no win team to a playoff team. RG3 has thrown the ball over 350 times, ranked 25 in the league. Run-ning the ball is quality RG3 has. He ran the ball for touchdowns 6 times for a total of 815 yards. Another rookie quarterback that is making a name for himself is Russell Wilson (Seahawks). With a total of 330 passing attempts, ranked 26 in the league, has no rushing touchdowns but a total of 489 rushing yards.Matt Reed, junior at MHS, thinks “their new style of quarterback is new and exciting but the pocket passer is the most effective.” Reed goes on to say “Andrew Luck is probably the best rookie quarterback because there is more of an improvement in the Colts than any of the other teams led by rookie quarterbacks.” These rookie quarterbacks may be young or immature, but because they can run and throw they create opportunities for their teams to win and get their team into the playoffs.

How to Avoid Second Semester Slumps

The school year is halfway over and as we all know, our workload is not getting any lighter. Bombarded with deadlines and homework, it is often easy to get caught in a second se-mester slump. A second semester slump is a lack of motivation and feeling of physical or emotional decline. Mrs. Wanamaker has witnessed this first hand. She explains, “I often find students losing motivation second semester because they are ready for summer.

from school that way I can relax the rest of the evening and do things such as watch t.v.” Recognize your progress and reward yourself when you have stayed on track. Junior Aaron Carpenter explains how he rewards himself, “I like to take naps when I am especially tired. It helps me energize and stay focused after a long day.”Second semester is always a struggle. By

They usually panic before exams because they don’t want to put in the effort to study.” So how do you maintain a good work ethic?First keep your eye on the prize. Although it may seem pointless, everything you are working on right now is help-ing you reach your future goals. Find the ‘good reasons’ to stay on track. Some tasks may seem useless, but if you take time to analyze them you will find them to be beneficial. You can motivate yourself by taking a differ-ent approach. You can switch up study habits or manage your time differently. By changing up your daily routine you can add more fun to your life which can improve your mood. You can do simple things such as go to the gym, take a walk, or visit friends when you feel like you need a break. Regan Yoakam, freshman, said, “I do my homework right when I get home

encouraging your-self and building on strengths you can find yourself excelling in and outside of school. Rec-ognize your weaknesses and work on them. Ry-ley Akins, sophomore, explains, “Last semester I had problems such as forgetting to turn in

work and this semester I am working on per-sonal motivation techniques so that I get my work turned in.” Some motivational techniques include working in smaller intervals, and allow-ing yourself frequent breaks.Keep in mind that second semester is a chance to redeem yourself if you did not get the grades you were hoping for first semester. Though it may be a challenge, you can bring up your final grade by working hard both third and fourth quarters. Develop new ideas that keep your interest and keep yourself motivated. Most importantly have fun and do what is best for you. Don’t forget, sum-mer is closer than you think… but don’t get too excited!Kacie EckenrodeReporter

Bagel IslandA New Taste

A new bagel cafe in downtown Marysville has recently opened under the ownership of the Stephen family. Bagel Island realizes that “serving fresh, natural and healthy food in a relaxing and friendly atmosphere impacts all of our neighbors, both near and far.”

This new bagel bakery has been attracting a lot of attention in the short time that it has been open with its friendly atmosphere and unique bagel combinations. “I love working there. LauraL-ynn is the best boss I`ve ever had,” says Bagel Island employee Gage Bowman who is also a senior at MHS.

While sitting down with LauraLynn Stephen and enjoying one of her delicious soups, she tells me that Bagel Island originally started as a bagel cart which was owned by her future husband. Now opened up as an restaurant with a philosophy of organic, healthy food “we try to be as organic as possible and people enjoy it, we get a lot of positive feedback,” says Stephen.

After asking around what people`s favorite bagel combina-tions were, Brooke Gindlesberger, freshman at MHS told me, “Blueberry bagel with cream cheese and their smoothies.” While employee Bowman tells me “ The islander club because of the garlic cream cheese. The garlic cream cheese is delicious.”

Bagel Island doesn’t plan on slowing down either. When I asked Stephen what she plans to do next, she told me “expand-ing our hours in the spring. We want to do more fundraising, and some new salads I want to bring on.” Along with great taste, this local restaurant offers healthy op-tions. “My parents recently discovered it and they love it,” says Wyatt Marshall, senior at MHS. So if you’re hungry and want good healthy food make sure to stop by Bagel Island and check it out for yourself.
