Christmas Day at St. Aloisius Medical Center as seen through the eyes of one of our Long Term Care residents: I am awakening but what do I smell? What am I hearing? What a joy it was to realize that I am smelling bacon frying and hearing refrains of Happy Birthday Jesus being sung by members of the New Life on Main Street Church. An added joy was to find out they had come to spend the day with us and to celebrate the greatest birthday, that of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. What a wonderful day we had with them. They served breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, corned beef hash, caramel rolls and Belgian waffles with all the toppings with coffee and juice. We were assured that there were no diet restrictions for Christmas Day. While we ate, we sang many verses of Happy Birthday to baby Jesus. And we partied on . . . After lunch several church members and young people returned to sing Christmas carols throughout the halls of the nursing home. Then we gathered in the dining room to play our favorite game, BINGO! New Life on Main Street Church donated five polar fleece throws and many quarters for prizes. As we were reflecting on how wonderful the day had been so far and how much we appreciated this wonderful group, they weren’t finished yet. Festive Christmas baskets were given to everyone including staff. Each basket included an orange, hot chocolate with marshmallows, tea bag, cookies, candy cane along with a poem about the candy cane, candy, sample bottles of shampoo, body wash, soap, lotion and mouthwash. The baskets were all done up in festive wrap and a bit of ribbon. That evening the halls were unusually quiet and everyone was tired after spending such a won- derful time. We enjoyed and appreciated all you did for us and for helping to keep the real reason for the Christmas season in our minds and hearts the whole day. Thank you! Our 2010 first baby was born to John and Jennifer Donarski on January 6, 2010. Luke Paul Donarski weighed 8 lbs. 3 oz. He is not a first baby for this family though, because he has 4 brothers, Andrew, Brandon, Ethan and Nathaniel. His mom and dad would have liked a girl but were more than happy to welcome this sur- prise. All New Year’s babies receive gifts from St. Aloisius Medi- cal Center. Luke received several outfits for newborn and a few to wear when he is older, also bibs and socks and baby stuff. All babies also receive gifts from some community churches; quilts, blankets and burp cloths. All mothers, on admission, receive a prayer blanket which is made bysomeone in the community. It’s much like a large scarf. Mom keeps this with her until baby is taken to the nursery then mother’s scent is with the child while away from mother. The blanket is a bridge between mom and baby (community and mom) and is a constant reminder that prayers fol- low the labor, birth and discharge home. While making these blankets prayers are made for care and comfort for those who will use the blanket. St. Aloisius takes great pleasure in welcoming Luke into the Harvey community and wish Jenni- fer and John the best as they add this little boy to their family. The gifts are only a token of our care and blessings for a strong and healthy child. Anyone wishing to make gifts or prayer blankets can contact the Director of Nursing or OB Supervisor. From the Administrator . . .“A very Merry Christmas and a

Happy New Year -- let’s hope it’sa good one without any fear” --music and lyrics by the late JohnLennon. Written and sung somany years ago and yet so appli-cable. Are we living in fear? Par-t icularly fear regarding ourhealth and the future of reformingit? Good health care is near anddear to al l of us -- we can’tescape (nor should we want to)having genuine concern when itcurrently is at the center of ourcongressional universe. But fear,no we should not live in fear rath-er we should live in faith andtrust and hope. That is the foun-dation upon which we will grow.As a faith based ministry St.

you upon true faith. And so faith has brought us to

this point exactly where we shouldbe and we are thankful for all thathas been bestowed upon us. Thelist is long and bountiful and I amhigh-lighting several instances

that might pique your interest.• A dedicated, loving workforce

taking care of all who come to ourdoors in need (well over 300strong, expanded physical therapypersonnel, new general surgeon)

• Financial stewardship toimprove the buildings and equip-ment in need of replacement andrepair (fire suppression systemsthroughout the entire acute andLTC facilities, new electric beds, aesthetics -- new flooring andpaint, new O/R family waitingroom)

• Technological advances alongwith gold standards in medicineand its delivery (electronic phar-macy software, trauma level IV

recertification, onsite paramediceducational program throughDakota College at Bottineau)

• The support of our local com-munity (we exist only to serveyou). All brought to the tablebased upon our foundation offaith.

With a new year just aroundthe corner not all will be smoothor easy, but I trust that at the endof the day we will be furtherahead and better for it. If it werenot for challenges opportunitieswould be missed. St. AloisiusMedical Center wishes all of youplenty of opportunities this com-ing new year.

Greatattendanceat FallWellness Days

We were blessed with mildweather for our Fall WellnessDays, boosting our attendancenumbers by 142 participantsover last spring, when ice, snow and fog managed to keepsome folks from venturing outat those early wellness hours.

A t t endance a t Drake ,Fessenden and the four Harveydays totaled 689 people whotook advantage of the opportu-nity to be proactive in manag-ing their health. A record 91men received the additionaltest for PSA, which screens forindication of prostate cancer.

At the St. Aloisius site, adepression screen was alsooffered which many partici-pants took advantage of. Men-tal health is just as important asphysical health and can oftendirectly affect our physical wellbeing.

If you have questions aboutyour wellness results, be sure tocontact your health care provid-er to discuss them. Followingup on abnormal values cangive you a head start on identi-fying and treating potentialproblems before they becomeadvanced.

The paramedic class offeredthrough the Dakota College atBottineau being taught here at St.Aloisius Medical Center has itsfirst semester under its belt. Theprogram is being taught throughthe North Dakota Emergency Edu-cation Consortium (NDEEC).Consort ium members are St .Aloisius Medical Center, Harvey;Heart of America Medical Center,Rugby; Carrington Health Center;and West River Health Center,Hettinger.

Wayne Fahy, a Critical CareP a ram ed i c em p l oyed by St .Aloisius, is the lead instructor forthe class and is able to do theinstruction over the university sys-tem’s Interactive Video Network(IVAN). This allows more studentsaccess to the program without hav-ing to travel. Currently the pro-gram has four students from theBelcourt and Rolla area and onefrom the Upham area who connectto the class in Rugby at the Heartof America site, two in Carringtonand two in Harvey. Mark Weber, program coordinator, is employedby Heart of America Medical Cen-ter. Weber will also instruct por-tions of the class from Rugby.

Our two local students are fromthe Anamoose and Fessendenareas. Mary Jund, who is a certi-fied athletic trainer and EMT-I, isemployed by St. Aloisius in theCardiac Rehab Department. Jundalso provides athletic training forthe Harvey High School sportsprograms. She has been a volun-teer member of the Harvey Ambu-lance Service the last three years.

Fahy states, “Mary is one ofthose people who has a natural tal-ent for patient care. It’s fun to

Dakota College at Bottineau Paramedic Classwatch her as she interacts withpatients, taking care of them andmaking them feel more at ease.”

Mike Melby lives in theFessenden area and has been amember of the Fessenden Ambu-lance Service for more than 10years. Mike and his wife, Tamra, own and run Triple K Horses, aminiature horse farm. Melby saysthat becoming a paramedic hasbeen a life-long dream and wasexcited when he found out thatthere would be a program offeredlocally.

“Our communities are lucky tohave two such fine paramediccandidates,” Fahy said, “and whenthey graduate, the communitieswill have two more paramedicswho can offer more advanced lifesupport. Mary will join our otherparamedics on staff working onthe Paramedic Quick ResponseUnit (QRU) and hopefully we canget Mike to work a few shifts forus as well.”

Fahy added, “This paramedicprogram is a very intense and gru-eling program. Along with theclassroom portion, the studentswill also be doing clinical experi-ence both in hospitals and on otherAdvanced Life Support Ambu-lance services. There are a lot ofnew things for them to learn.”

“I am so excited about thisprogram! Mark and I sat downabout a year ago and started talk-ing about this class. Our goal wasto train paramedics to be able tofunction in a rural setting wherethere is not a lot of back up andthey may be the only ALS personaround. All paramedic programshave to teach a paramedic to aminimum competency level. We

looked at that level and thoughtthat rural paramedics need to beabove that competency level soour program is going to go into alittle more depth and stress morecompetency in certain skills andpharmacology knowledge,” Fahysaid.

The program starts the secondsemester Jan. 12, and the certifi-cate program will finish in August. We look forward to being able tooffer this class on a yearly basissince the University System hasapproved the course through theDakota College at Bottineau.

Update for the Hill-Burton programEffective April 8, 2010, St. Aloisius will no longer be offering

the Hill-Burton Uncompensated Services program for medicalservices as our obligation to the federal government will be ful-filled. Therefore, St. Aloisius is asking for those who are cur-rently without insurance and others who have used the Hill-Burton program in the past to begin planning ahead in findingsome source of health coverage.

There are other alternatives to Hill-Burton available such asWomen’s Way for women’s annual physicals and mammogramsand Healthy Steps through Blue Cross Blue Shield for unin-sured children in addition to the Medicaid program. There mayalso be assistance through our charity care program but thequalifications are more stringent. Any questions may be direct-ed to Jessica at 324-4769 ext. 110.

We Appreciate You . . .The Christmas and New Year holiday season is a great time to show

gratefulness and to be thankful, not only for the big things but also forthose little blessings that help make our days brighter at St. Aloisius. Here are a few praises and thank yous . . .

• St. Aloisius received a grant to purchase some new beds and decid-ed to donate 28 of the older beds from LTC to the Hope Foundationwho refurbishes them for use at other facilities throughout the country. The Hope Foundation is a nonprofit organization that works with orga-nizations that support the medical, educational and emotional needs ofchildren. Also, outdated supplies are periodically donated to a doctorwho sends them to help in a mission area.

• During the snow storm over the Christmas holidays the staff at St.Aloisius went above and beyond the call of duty by staying and workingdouble shifts and working their days off because co-workers couldn’tmake it to work. Thank you for your dedication. We are so grateful forsuch efficient and compassionate staff at St. Aloisius.

• Many people donated cookies, special treats and Christmas pres-ents. Others shared their time visiting and Christmas caroling. All thedonations and shared time is so appreciated. Thank you for remember-ing our Long Term Care residents and patients during the holiday sea-son. Your gifts are cherished by all at St. Aloisius and we are gratefulfor your kindness.

Christmas isn’t the only giving time at St. Aloisius Medical Center.Often during the year you can find a box for donations in the lobby.Sometimes for the food pantry, sometimes for a needy family and allgifts are welcome.

The St. Aloisius family is generous. We have bake sales for peoplewith health troubles or financial needs. We have been known to haverummage sales and wreath or baskets sold at silent auction for a worthycause. Many cash donations or PTO have been donated to coworkers inneed.

Recently four suitcases of fabric and sewing notions were collectedfor a Kenya mission. Supplies are saved from OR and OB, books fromclinics and unused things from Lab are saved for a mission in the Phil-ippines, Cheryl Dyck, and for missions in Africa.

The area of concern at St. Aloisius is Our World.
