Scientists wake up to coffee’s benefits
That’s the headline in the British Medical Journal, BMJ just in time for exams this month, but see caveats below. A com-prehensive review identified 218 meta-analyses including 17 interventional meta-analyses. Coffee consumption was more often associated with benefit than harm for a range of health outcomes. The largest risk reduc-tions with 3 or 4 cups / day includ-ed all-cause mortality, cardiovascu-lar mortality, & cardiovascular dis-ease. High vs. low consumption was associated with an 18% lower risk of cancer. Consumption was also associated with a lower risk of Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Diabetes type 2, kidney stones, gallstones, and metabolic & liver conditions. Roasted coffee is a complex mixture of over 1000 bioactive compounds, some with potentially therapeutic antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic, or anticancer effects that pro-
vide biological plausi-bility for recent epide-miological associations.
What this study adds:
Coffee drinking seems safe within usual patterns of consumption, ex-cept during pregnancy and in wom-en at increased risk of fracture.

Coffee Trivia
Most expensive coffee: Kopi Luwak costs up to $500 (US) / Kg made from coffee beans eaten and “processed” by wild civet cats. Reference: The Disturbing Secret Behind the World’s Most Expensive Coffee. National Geographic News, 2016 Apr 29.
Coffee is the second largest traded com-modity in the world, after oil.
Coffee contains polyphenol antioxidants possibly responsible for some of the health benefits. Red wine, dark choco-late, blueberries, blackberries, raspber-ries, blackcurrants, cinnamon and green and black tea also contain high levels of antioxidant polyphenols.
