JAW-DROPPING JACKIE=S WARRIOR ROMPS
IN RUNHAPPY HOPEFUL
J Kirk and Judy Robison=s Jackie=s Warrior (Maclean=s Music),
breathtaking winner of the Aug. 7 GII Saratoga Special S., added
another superlative to his resume with a jaw-dropping victory in
the GI Runhappy Hopeful S. at Saratoga Monday. Sent off at 9-5,
the bay colt was away sharply and almost immediately had a
two-length advantage on the field through an opening quarter in
:22.56. Pepetu (Dialed In) and even-money favorite
Reinvestment Risk (Upstart) were his closest pursuers, but as
that duo tried to inch closer, Jackie=s Warrior spurted further
clear, covering his next two furlongs in :22.27 for a half up in
:44.83. Reinvestment Risk was the only one in with a chance in
upper stretch, but Jackie=s Warrior easily shrugged off that foe,
getting his next quarter in :23.50 for three-quarters in 1:08.33,
before sailing under the wire geared down under a motionless
Joel Rosario. He completed the seven furlongs in a stakes-record
1:21.29, bettering the previous mark set by Came Home in 2001
by 0.65 second.
AHe broke really fast and I was two lengths in front right
away,@ Rosario said. AHe=s a fast horse. He was able to carry his
speed the whole way around. I tried to get off the rail a little bit
and it felt like he was comfortable with that. It=s unbelievable
the way he ran last time and he was probably better today. He=s
a big horse and it looks like he can go longer, too.@ Cont. p3
THE DOCTOR IS IN THE HOUSE AT DEL MAR Dr. Schivel (Violence), making his first start for new owners
Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal, glided to a 1 3/4-length
victory in the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity on closing day at the
oceanside oval Monday. Made the 7-5 favorite to build on a
smart-looking Aug. 8 maiden victory for breeders William
Branch and Arnold Hill, Dr. Schivel sat a stalking trip three wide,
went after favored Spielberg (Union Rags) entering the stretch
and proved a little too tough for that rival, edging away down
the stretch to give Hill >n= Dale stallions a sweep of the holiday
Grade I juvenile races on both coasts and giving his sire Violence
his third Grade I winner of the year.
AI loved the way he was moving [down the backstretch]; he
looked comfortable,@ said winning trainer Luis Mendez. AAround
the turn, it looked like he had a lot of horse, so I felt really good.
And he got it done.@ Cont. p9

Jackie=s Warrior Romps in Runhappy
Hopeful (cont. from p1)
Irad Ortiz, Jr. was aboard runner-up Reinvestment Risk, who
was making his second start following a >TDN Rising Star= worthy
7 3/4-length debut win at Saratoga Aug. 1.
AMy trip was perfect,@ Ortiz said. AHe went a little fast, but he
kept going. He just got beat by a really nice horse. My horse was
only making his second start, so he will improve.@
Jackie=s Warrior was a first-out winner going five furlongs at
Churchill Downs, besting subsequent >TDN Rising Star=
Therideofalifetime (Candy Ride {Arg}) by 2 1/2 lengths June 19.
He had three lengths on that foe while scoring a front-running
victory in the Aug. 7 GII Saratoga Special S. last time out,
completing that six-furlong race in 1:09.62.
AHe=s a very athletic colt that gets over the ground extremely
well,@ Scott Blasi, assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen, said of the
$95,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase. ASteve picked
him out for Mr. Robison and it=s been a good partnership over
the years. We=re extremely happy to have him. He just
continues to improve. He gets stronger in his works. He does
things effortlessly.@
Asmussen, who scored his first Hopeful victory last year with
Basin (Liam=s Map), became the first conditioner to notch
back-to-back victories in the prestigious event for juveniles since
D. Wayne Lukas saddled High Yield (1999) and Yonaguska
(2000).
Of a possible next target for the speedy Jackie=s Warrior, Blasi
said, AI=d expect he=d go on to the [Oct. 10 GI] Champagne S. [at
Belmont Park] and the Breeders= Cup from there. But, one race
at a time. We don=t want to get too far ahead of ourselves.@

Hopeful trophy presentation | Sarah Andrew
Pedigree Notes:
Jackie=s Warrior is one of four graded stakes winners for
Maclean=s Music, who is also the sire of 2017 GI Preakness S.
winner Cloud Computing and 2018 GI Champagne S. winner
Complexity. This year, the sire has been represented by GII Best
Pal S. third-place finisher Sonic Brees, as well as stakes winner
Share the Upside and graded placed Bay Muzik.
John Williams=s J & J Stable claimed Unicorn Girl for $16,000
out of her 54th and final career start at Monmouth Park in July
2013. The 15-year-old mare has a yearling filly by Candy Ride
(Arg) and produced a colt by American Pharoah this year. She
was bred back to Into Mischief. Her 3-year-old King Theo (More
Than Ready), who races for J & J Stable, was fifth in Saturday=s
GII American Turf S. at Churchill Downs.
IN AN USUAL YEAR, SOME THINGS STAY THE
SAME AT SARATOGA by Mike Kane
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Even without spectators on the
grounds, the 152nd summer of racing in Saratoga produced a
total betting handle of $702.5 million that was remarkably close
to last year's record figure of $705.3 million.
The daily average handle for the 40-day meet in 2020 was
$17.6 million and the daily average handle for the
weather-shortened 39-day meet in 2019 was $18.1 million.
The season concluded Monday as quietly as it began July 16,
with a program conducted without fans, in compliance with New
York State's COVID-19 protocols for sporting events. Though the
atmosphere was unlike any previous year, some things did not
change: there was enthusiastic wagering support for the
Saratoga product, Todd Pletcher extended his record with a 14th
training title, and Irad Ortiz, Jr. nipped his brother Jose for the
riding crown, 59-58. Cont. p6

David O=Rourke | Mike Kane photo
Irad Ortiz missed three days of the meet with an arm injury
from a gate mishap. It was the sixth-straight year that an Ortiz
was the Saratoga champ.
By the time New York permitted racing to resume at Belmont
Park June 3, New York Racing Association officials had decided
that it made more business sense to run at Saratoga, quite
possibly without fans, than to stay in metropolitan New York for
the summer. NYRA CEO and president David O'Rourke said the
2020 meet at Saratoga was a success on two levels: operating
safely with no Covid-19 positives and the strong handle.
AIn terms of the numbers, everyone has been very focused on
the handle and the numbers have come in higher than we
forecasted,@ he said. ASlightly. Maybe about 5%. That's good
because it allows us to maintain the continuity of the racing.
There was absolutely no clarity on when or if casinos would
open and on what time line. Now that they have announced that
they will be open in September, hopefully that can relieve a little
bit of pressure as you get through the winter. For us, handle
generation, obviously, is seasonal. We're at the high point right
now and with those extra funds, it will help us keep that
continuity through next winter. That=s a relief.@
Despite the tote success, O=Rourke said having to operate
without spectators cost NYRA approximately $15 million in the
profit it makes at Saratoga selling seating, food and beverages.
O'Rourke offered Asurreal@ as the first way to describe the
season without fans at America=s most popular racetrack.
AIt was actually a beautiful summer up here,@ he said. AIt was
like operating a racetrack in some sort of Twilight Zone science
fiction movie where there is nobody around, but if you looked at
it on television, you really sort of can=t tell until you get to the
winner=s circle.@
O'Rourke said that running without fans felt like it was some
sort of practice session.
ANow that it=s over, it=s kind of just a bizarre year,@ he said.
ALuckily, we=ve had the television platform, so it was us being
inside the bubble in a lot of ways. At times we would sit upstairs
and just focus on the TV aspect of it and say, >How is everyone
else really seeing what=s going on?= The media coverage has
been great and it=s important. It=s really the only way that
people are being able to connect with us. But when you watch it
and experience it on television, it=s still Saratoga. When you look
at in the Form, it=s still Saratoga. The racing has been really good.@
Sackatoga Stable=s Tiz the Law (Constitution) romped to
victory in Saratoga=s marquee race, the GI Runhappy Travers S.
Aug. 8. He was second to Authentic (Into Mischief) as the
favorite in the GI Kentucky Derby Saturday at Churchill Downs.
Peter Callahan's Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil) was an easy winner
of the GI Alabama S. Aug. 15 and she ended second in the GI
Kentucky Oaks Sept. 4. For the second year in a row, Bob Baffert
won the GI Whitney S., this time with Improbable (City Zip).
O>Rourke said NYRA=s decision a few years ago to invest in its
advance deposit wagering app, NYRA Bets, and the move to daily
national television coverage on Fox paid off in a big way when all
betting had to be done off track. He said being on a sports
channel when racing was the only live sport in America helped
expand the customer base in June and carried into Saratoga.
AMaybe there is a slight silver lining in that the pandemic kind
of forced a leap-frog effect in terms of people betting on their
phones and watching us on television,@ he said. AWe saw [the
growth in interest in ADW apps] coming and that=s why we
invested pretty heavily with Fox and pushed toward that
platform with NYRA Bets.@
Cont. p7

Todd Pletcher | Sarah Andrew
O=Rourke continued, ABecause nobody could come to the live
track, I think it has accelerated that channel shift. It will be
interesting next year when we are here and there are 25,000
people, are people still engaging, at least on the wagering side,
on their phone?@
Both the training and jockey titles were decided on the final
day of the season. Pletcher, 53, carried a five-win advantage
over two-time defending champ Chad Brown into the 14-race
card on Labor Day. Brown cut the lead with a victory, but
Pletcher, who won his first Saratoga title in 1998, prevailed,
earning the H. Allen Jerkens Award with 31 wins.
AIt feels great. It=s very rewarding for the whole team,@
Pletcher said. AA lot of people put a lot of hard work into it. It=s
very satisfying.@
Pletcher said the emergence of his younger horses--he won
with four 2-year-olds--helped him secure the title. The Pletcher
stable won four stakes: the GI Fourstardave H. with Halladay
(War Front); the Alydar S. with Spinoff (Hard Spun); the Summer
Colony S. with Nonna Madeline (Candy Ride {Arg}); and the
Birdstone S. with Moretti (Medaglia d=Oro).
Though he has won titles at other tracks, Pletcher said that
finishing on top at the end of the competitive Saratoga season is
very gratifying.
AI think it=s always more special here,@ Pletcher said. AI=ve
always said that Angel Cordero is the one that made it mean
something. He always fought really hard. He=s been texting me
the last couple of days. He won 14 and so it was kind of cool to
tie him.@

Cordero, 77, presented the award that honors his dominance
at Saratoga to Irad Ortiz in the winner's circle after the final
race. Moments later he embraced the Ortiz brothers, who had
entered the day tied at 57 wins.
During the Covid-19 lockdown, NYRA officials considered
staying downstate this summer. However, O'Rourke said that
the turf courses at Belmont Park could not have handled two
more months of competition and NYRA likely would have had to
go to Aqueduct for a while. A better option, he said, was to
commit to open the Oklahoma training track in Saratoga Springs
June 4 and follow up about six weeks later with the racing
season. Just before the season started, NYRA reacted to
Covid-19 positives with jockeys at other tracks by locking down
the riding colony. It proved to be a good move.
AThe thing about this year, and everyone that has gone
through a business, is that you don=t really have a playbook,@
O=Rourke said. AI don=t want to say you are making it up, you=re
just using the facts you have in front of you and trying to make
educated guesses and trying to stay on the conservative side.
Sometimes there is a little bit of luck involved if you get it right
or not. So, all be told, it worked out.@
O=Rourke said that when the decision was made in late May to
race at Saratoga, he thought there was an 80% probability that
some spectators would be allowed into the track during the
season. At that point, New York was making progress controlling
the pandemic.
AWe thought, >We=ll get through this and by the end of June
everything will start to calm down,=@ he said. AThen it seemed to
turn pretty quick. We asked for fans--we didn=t have high
expectations--and the state made the right call, obviously, given
where New York is at now.@
As for 2021, O=Rourke said it=s too early to deal with what-ifs
questions about protocols and limits on attendance.
AIt=s something you don=t even want to think about,@ he said.
AWe want to think about opening up next year with a record
crowd on opening day, but if we have to adapt, we will.@

Dr. Schivel Wins Runhappy Del Mar Futurity(cont. from p1)
A $1-million Keeneland September yearling, Spielberg showed
the way early from GII Best Pal
S. upsetter Weston (Hit It a
Bomb), with Flavien Prat and
Dr. Schivel keeping an eye on
those two from the outside.
But he had the answers when
push came to shove at the
quarter pole and, although
Spielberg boxed on gamely
down on the inside, Dr. Schivel
got the job done by the better
part of two lengths.
AHe broke well, then he got a
little aggressive on me,@ Prat
said. AI tried to give him a little
breather on the turn, then
when I asked him, he was a
runner. He=s a nice colt.@
Dr. Schivel was third behind Weston while sprinting
4 1/2 furlongs in his debut at Santa Anita June 21.
He was runner-up behind subsequent GII Best Pal S. third-
place finisher Sonic Brees (Maclean=s Music) going 5 1/2 furlongs
at Los Alamitos July 4, but he put it all together for his third
start, cruising to a 5 3/4-length
victory over Spielberg in that
colt=s debut effort going six
furlongs Aug. 8. He was
purchased privately after that
victory and the Futurity was his
final start for Mendez.
AI=m very proud of myself and
the team for what we=ve done
getting him to win this race,@
Mendez, who was winning his
first Grade I, said. AI thank the
owners for giving me this horse
and I've got to go back home and
start breaking babies for them. I
don't have any other feeling than
that.@
Jed Cohen=s Red Baron=s Barn and the Rancho Temescal of

SECOND STRIDE PROVES THERE'S NO LIMIT
TO THE TALENTS OF OTTBS by Diana Pikulski
Kim Smith grew up in Prospect, KY and has ridden horses her
whole life. Her already wide network in the Thoroughbred
industry grew considerably while she was managing the stable
at the Kentucky Derby Museum and exercising the resident
Thoroughbred on the track at Churchill Downs.
Smith founded Second Stride, Inc. in 2005 with the goal of
helping horses and people in racing by building on those
relationships. The Crestwood, KY nonprofit usually maintains
15-20 horses at a time and is located at Moserwood Farm, a
full-service boarding and training facility. Smith works hard at
making retirement to Second Stride easy for trainers and
owners. They even have an agency form so that owners need
not do the transfer paperwork themselves. There is no
mandatory monetary donation if a horse is accepted and Second
Stride takes horses on short notice.
AI=ve been there on the owning and training side,@ said Smith.
ASo, I know that the time it takes to donate a horse matters. It's
not because racing people are insensitive or indifferent to the
horse, it=s just a factor of the business and how important stalls
and timing of the meet goes.@
AOur goal is to help as many horses as possible and so we
make it easy to do the right thing,@ said Smith. AWe don=t require
a donation with a horse, but most owners and trainers will offer
one. My goal is to build a relationship so that if I take a horse
with a tendon that will need a lot of work, I will also be offered
the horse that is perfectly sound and ready-to-go.@
Smith accepts stallions and gelds them, broodmares and
horses that may need time and extensive rehabilitation before
they can be ridden or re-trained. Second Stride excels in getting
horses placed with show horse trainers and adopters quickly and
efficiently. Smith accomplishes this in no small part because of
the many exercise riders and other racetrack connections who
work or volunteer for Second Stride. Since 2005, over 1000
Thoroughbreds have been adopted through the program.
AOur riders are gallop riders or the people who go around and
break Thoroughbreds for the farms,@ said Smith. ASo, we are
able to get the horses retrained and ready to move on pretty
quickly.@

Amy Lent drives Delightfully | Wendy Wooley/EquiSport
On the adoption side, the Second Stride application is long but
potential adopters are appointed an adoption coordinator who
knows, and has probably ridden all of the available horses.
AMaking the right match requires someone who really knows
the horses and can sometimes
convince people to try a horse that
may not fit the original profile of
what they are looking for,@ said
Smith. AOur return rate is extremely
low and I credit the personal care
we put into making the match.
Many of the adopted horses that
are returned, are well-trained and
donated back for us to adopt out
again for another fee.@
AWe hit our stride in 2012 and on
average, we adopt out about 100
horses per year,@ said Smith. AThis
year, however we are already at 96
through August so, it is going to be
a banner year.@
She continued, AWe see time and time again the versatility of
the Thoroughbred. We put Western tack on them, ride them
through water, take them to cows and see how they adapt to all
situations and disciplines. We have placed them in all over the
country in every discipline.@
AOne of my favorites is a horse named Capote Cat, by Storm
Cat out of a Capote mare,@ said Smith. AWe tried him in every
normal discipline--English and Western, but as soon as things
got repetitive, he got naughty.
So, we tried a mounted search
and rescue in North Carolina and
he thrived there. He loves that
job.@
Amy Lent, of Ramblen Farm in
Versailles, KY adopted
Delightfully (Redding Colliery)
from Second Stride. Due to an
injury, the mare was never a
show riding prospect. But, under
Lent=s expertise, she has
excelled in driving and competed
in the 2018 Thoroughbred
Makeover.
Second Stride sends an
average of three to six horses a year to the Thoroughbred
Makeover and always asks the previous owner to make a
donation to cover the entry fee. If they cannot, Second Stride
will pay the fee.

Alliance, but funding and a lack of sound horses in aftercare
charities are still an issue,@ said Smith. AI wish that more owners
and trainers would donate their horses to non-profits, rather
than sell them privately. Sound horses that can be adopted for a
substantial fee help organizations balance the cost of horses
that need long-term care or more rehabilitation before they are
rideable.@

LOUISIANA JUDGE TO RULE FRIDAY ON FAIR
GROUNDS EMERGENCY STABLING by T.D. Thornton
A temporary restraining order issued Sep. 4 has blocked a
Louisiana State Racing Commission (LSRC) mandate from taking
effect that seeks to force the Fair Grounds to open its
backstretch stabling to as many as 500 Thoroughbreds displaced
by Hurricane Laura in the last week of August. An Orleans Parish
Civil District Court judge is now expected to rule on the
injunction after a Sept. 11 hearing.
The news site Crescent City Sports first reported on the
57-page request for injunction filed by attorneys for the Fair
Grounds, which is owned by the gaming corporation Churchill
Downs, Inc. The filing stated that the LSRC Adoes not have the
legal authority to issue the mandatory injunction@ and that
Aissuing such an order constitutes an unconstitutional taking and
violates Fair Grounds= constitutional rights to due process.@
After the Aug. 27 hurricane wrecked infrastructure at Delta
Downs, the racino announced that its property would close to
assess and repair damage.

Force the Pass
The Oct. 6-Feb. 27 meet could be delayed or abbreviated.
On Sep. 2 the Louisiana Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective
Association (LHBPA) made a written plea to the LSRC asking for
an emergency order to be handed down that would mandate
Aimmediate access to stalls to stable at both Louisiana Downs
and Fair Grounds.@
The request for stabling is complicated by meets for both
Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds just now ending and starting
within the same rough time frame at Louisiana's four tracks.
Additionally, the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic is making
movement of people and horses difficult.
On Sept. 3 the LSRC voted 9-1 to mandate that Fair Grounds
take in Thoroughbreds from Evangeline Downs to make way for
a Quarter Horse meet scheduled to begin at Evangeline Sept. 17.
Crescent City Sports reported that the first 10 days of that
Evangeline meet are dates that were originally assigned to Fair
Grounds, but the Quarter Horse dates were moved to
Evangeline earlier this summer Abecause of the local impacts of
COVID-19 and the risks associated with conducting a meet in the
peak of hurricane season.@
FORCE THE PASS TO SAUDI ARABIA Grade I winner Force the Pass (Speightstown--Social Queen,
by Dynaformer), who stood his first season at stud in 2020 at
Anchor & Hope Farm in Maryland, has been sold and will
continue his stud career in Saudi Arabia. The 8-year-old stallion
was acquired last year by TK Kuegler=s Wasabi Ventures
Stallions, LLC, and represented Wasabi=s first foray into the
stallion business.
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 15 OF 16 • THETDN.COM TUESDAY • SEPTEMBER 8, 2020
AWhen we obtained Force the Pass a year ago, we had every
expectation of turning him into a successful Midlantic stallion,@
said Kuegler. AWe never had any intention of selling him,
but when the offer came in out of the blue from Saudi Arabia, it
was just too good to pass up. As everyone involved in racing and
breeding knows, it is very hard to make money in this business,
and while we are sad to see Force the Pass go, we are pleased
for the ownership group that our first stallion venture resulted
in a favorable outcome for them--especially during what have
been generally challenging economic circumstances. Now, with
this fantastic result under our belt and having learned a great
deal about the stallion business, we can turn our attention to
finding the next successful Wasabi stallion.@
Wasabi Ventures initially began with racing partnerships and,
after taking on its first stallion with Force the Pass, has recently
branched out into broodmare partnerships.
Bred and campaigned by Colts Neck Stables, Force the Pass
won the 2015 GI Belmont Derby and GIII Penn Mile H. On the
board in 16 of 21 starts, he won five times and earned
$1,359,114. He covered 57 mares in 2020.
GRIFFIN TAKES THE MIC AT MONMOUTH Chris Griffin will call the races for the remainder of the
Monmouth Park meeting as regular announcer Frank Mirahmadi
returns to California Sept. 12 to call the upcoming Santa Anita
meeting. The Monmouth meet concludes Sept. 27 and will be
followed by a nine-day Meadowlands-at-Monmouth meet in
October.
Griffin, 39, most recently served as the track announcer at Sam
Houston Race Park.
AIt=s a huge opportunity. I=m excited,@ said Griffin. AI=m looking

Literary references are not rare in horse racing, and 2-year-old
winner Bold Mistress (Vronsky--Common Truth) carries a
precious such connection, linked to the GOAT (probably) writer
Lev Tolstoy. Unhappily married Anna Karenina is in fact the
absolutely bold mistress of Count Vronsky in the Russian
novelist=s book of the same name.
AMany writers consider >Anna Karenina= the greatest work of
literature ever and the author himself called it his first true
novel,@ states Wikipedia--and only a few years before Tolstoy
had written AWar and Peace,@ which I personally prefer (reading
the earlier masterpiece is like being immersed in life, I think).
This flying and head-strong young filly deserves her name and
let=s hope that her race beginnings are as promising and
luminous as the very famous incipit of AAnna Karenina@: AHappy

Beaten for speed and settled worse than midfield down the

was asked for his best a quarter mile out and sprinted best of all
for his first U.S. stakes success. Last year=s winner Snapper

>TDN Rising Star= Happy Saver ran his record to a perfect
three-for-three with a workmanlike success in Monday=s
Federico Tesio S. at Laurel.
The 1-5 chalk was off well enough and took up an outside
stalking role as Monday Morning Qb called the plays up front.
Put to an all-out drive by Trevor McCarthy, the Wertheimer
homebred took a few strides to hit his top gear, but he reeled in
the pacesetter a furlong down and edged clear.
An impressive debut winner on the Belmont S. undercard
June 20, the chestnut did his best work late en route to a four-
length allowance victory going nine panels at Saratoga July 26.
The Tesio winner is guaranteed a spot in the gate for the
GI Preakness S. at Pimlico Oct. 3 if connections so choose.
Happy Saver, whose dam cost $600,000 as a Keeneland
September yearling in 2008, counts blue-hen Weekend Surprise
as his great-granddam, whose legendary produce include Horse
of the Year A.P. Indy, GI Preakness S. winner Summer Squall,
MGSP Honor Grades and the dam of GI Breeders= Cup Mile hero
Court Vision, sire of champion Storm The Court. Happy Week is

Classe took her record to three wins from as many starts,
earning a spot in the gate for the Oct. 3 GII Black-Eyed Susan S.
with a hard-fought victory in the Weber City Miss S. Monday.
Sent straight into the lead by Julian Pimentel, Grand Cru Classe
set a modest tempo, with some mild pressure to her outside.
Shaken up turning for home, she responded in kind, but soon
had Market Rumor breathing down her neck. Grand Cru Classe
battled hard and got home first, despite seeming to run out of
steam late.
An 8 3/4-length maiden winner through the Belmont slop
May 24, Grand Cru Classe stretched out to Belmont=s one-turn
mile and cleared her first allowance condition by four lengths
July 9.
Grand Cru Classe is out of a full-sister to Christmas Kid, winner
of the GI Ashland S. in 2007 and sold for $4.2 million in foal to
Bernardini from the Ned Evans dispersal at Keeneland
November back in 2011. Christmas Kid has since gone on to

the 2017 GIII Poker S. in the Lure S. on closing Monday at
Saratoga. The veteran was coming off a pair of runner-up

has placed in the GI Maker's 46 Mile S., the GI Shadwell Turf

In the Lure, Ballagh Rocks sat just off the flank of Largent, who
recorded a quarter in :24.38 and a half in :48.47 with 8-5
favorite Breaking the Rules (War Front) tracking in third. As they
passed the three-sixteenths pole, Ballagh Rocks collared the
frontrunner and went right on by, skipping home with his ears
pricked at the wire.
"I had him in a two-other-than optional claimer and it came off

TARANTINO (c, 2, Pioneerof the Nile--Without Delay, by
Seeking the Gold), the most expensive auction buy in the field
at $610,000 at Keeneland last September, was sent at a
remarkable price of 6-1 for a Bob Baffert firster at Del Mar. Of
course, not many of Baffert=s pricey 2-year-old start on the lawn
either, but Tarantino handled the surface with aplomb, stalking
off the rail and making his move three wide into the stretch. The
bay poked a head in front with a furlong to go, then buckled
down to hold off a battling Harlan Estate (Kantharos) by a
length. The winner is a half-brother to Before You Know It (Hard
Spun), GSP, $313,083; and to Instant Reflex (Quality Road), GSP.
Without Delay also has a yearling colt by Quality Road. She is a
half-sister to the dam of GSW & GISP King Guillermo (Uncle Mo),
who was a scratch last week from the GI Kentucky Derby. Sales

second, the dark bay established a steady rhythm and was
inching closer after the first quarter in :22.58. Cont. p13

BIG FLAME (c, 2, Mr. Big--Renegade Heat, by Unusual Heat)
tired to second going 100 yards shorter when unveiled Aug. 8
versus fellow Cal-breds, and was bet down to 8-5 favoritism to
go one better in the Del Mar nightcap. One of the quickest into
stride, the blinkered crowd=s pick exchanged blows with a rival
to his inside but led narrowly through a :22.47 first quarter.
Shrugging aside all comers turning into the straight, Big Flame
kicked away to win by 2 1/2 lengths, as the pair of Suzie Qzz
Brother (Commissioner) and Big Story (Mr. Big) argued place
honours. Ultimately, Suzie Qzz Brother beat the latter by a neck.
Big Flame is the second winner of three runners for his unraced
dam. He is followed by yearling and foal full-sisters, the former
christened Big Plans. Renegade Heat, a full-sister to SW The
Hunted and GSP Huntsville (Unusual Heat), was once again
covered by Mr. Big for 2021. The winner=s third dam, MSW

AMERICAN PHENOM (c, 3, American Pharoah--Schiaparelli
{GSW, $274,184}, by Ghostzapper), a $340,000 Keeneland
September yearling, was claimed for $50,000 from Let=s Go

furlongs on the local turf Mar. 5 and improved two spots against
straight maidens off the bench here July 15. Off at 23-10 while
adding front bandages in this first route try, the bay made an
easy lead and clicked off comfortable splits of :24.86 and :49.13.
Going strongly in the clear while in hand on the far turn, he
quickly turned aside a brief bid by Seven Channels (English
Channel) in early stretch and stayed in charge from there to best
that rival by 1 1/2 lengths. The winner=s dam went five-for-nine

shipped in as the 6-5 chalk. Breaking from the outside, Eliot Ness
rushed up to contest the lead, but quickly settled into third
behind dueling speedsters as the quarter passed in :23.29.
Looming boldly on the turn, Eliot Ness found the front, getting

enough left in the tank to hold off a surging Mohomes (Cairo

The sales grounds at Arqana still had plenty of traffic | Emma Berry
REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL AT ARQANA
By Emma Berry
DEAUVILLE, FranceCThe Life Of Brian anthem >Always look on
the bright side of life= is one that could easily be adopted by the
bloodstock industry. There have been crises in the pastCin
modern times perhaps none so all-pervading as the one we
currently faceCbut, extraordinarily, the horse traders as a
collective always bounce back, even if some individuals are lost
from the merry band along the way.
Merry would be too strong an adjective to describe the
current mood on the Arqana sales grounds but, amid the
nervousness of some vendors and the COVID-inspired anxiety of
travellers from fellow European countries, there is also a sense
of relief that France=s major yearling sale is taking place at all,
albeit out of its usual season-opening slot in mid-August.
There is though still something of the holiday atmosphere
about the place. This is, after all, Deauville and the sun is
shining. And, with apologies for jumping from Monty Python to
Ian Dury and the Blockheads within three paragraphs, if that=s
not a good enough reason to be cheerful, I=ll give you two more.
Despite quarantine restrictions on returning to Ireland and
Britain, plenty of agents and prospective buyers from both those
nations have decided to make the trip to France and forfeit 14
days to quarantine once home. Cont. p2
THAT'S MORE LIKE IT!By Chris McGrath
NEWMARKET, UK-Every cloud has a silver lining, even one as
black and pervasive as this accursed pandemic. And the transfer
of the Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale from its eponymous base to
the headquarters of its parent brand, as part of an emergency
revamping of the yearling sales calendar, worked so well on
Monday that conceivably it might prove tempting to make the
relocation permanent.
On the other hand, prospectors will go anywhere for the right
animal. Mouse O'Ryan put it well. "You can sell a good horse at a
crossroads," the agent said. "You tell us where it is, we'll make it
our business to get there."
Certainly there were other valid factors in play, besides the
congenial setting. Cont. p5

Reasons to Be Cheerful at Arqana Cont. from p1
What=s another fortnight behind closed doors if it means
gaining access to some of Europe=s best yearlings and still being
released in time for the Goffs Orby Sale?
Then there is the continuing air of cooperation between the
famously competitive sales houses: witness Arqana and Goffs
UK teaming up to host a combined breeze-up sale and, later in
the year, Arqana sharing its October auction with its domestic
rival Osarus. Furthermore, there=s plenty of talk of entente
cordiale between agents, with some of those on the ground in
France acting as the eyes and ears of their counterparts in
America and beyond.
That global market is fundamentally important to the elite
yearling sales in Europe and one which has come to be
expected. At Arqana alone last year, Japanese, American and
Australian buyers played a significant role in their pursuit of
some of the sale=s more expensive yearlings. Let=s hope their
physical absence is not felt too keenly in the coming days and it
will have been reassuring to some to see Mick Kinane viewing
horses from Sunday morning on behalf of the Hong Kong Jockey
Club.
Dream is Real for Logis Saint Germain
As this preview was being written on Monday, Michael Tabor=s
Star Seeking (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) earned her first victory at
Leicester and TDN Rising Star in the process. The team behind
Olivier Carli=s Haras du Logis Saint Germain will be hoping that
another youngster by Gleneagles will be displaying a touch of
star quality by this time next year, and the stud=s yearling colt by
Coolmore=s dual Guineas winner certainly has notable markers
in his pedigree for this to be far from fanciful.
Being offered on Thursday as lot 277, the colt who carries
eligibility for French owners= premiums is a half-brother to this
season=s G1 Poule d=Essai des Pouliches winner Dream And Do
(Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), who bore Carli=s colours to glory in front of
empty stands at Deauville when the racing had to be switched
out of Paris=s COVID red zone. A further crack miler, Charm Spirit
(Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), appears under the colt=s second
dam, while in the farther realms of his pedigree can be found
the likes of Kheleyf (Green Desert) and Holy Roman Emperor
(Ire) (Danehill). Cont. p3

While this year has been frustrating for owners who were
unable to go racing in the early post-lockdown weeks, there was
nevertheless great satisfaction to be derived for the Logis Saint
Germain team from the farm=s first Classic winner.
AIt has been a strong year of racing for us,@ said the stud's
manager Jerome Glandais at Arqana on Monday. AObviously we
would have enjoyed going to see our horses racing, especially
for the Classic, because we couldn=t share the joy with anybody,
but having said that we were just grateful that racing was able
to take place. For us, being a Classic breeder is something that
changes your life.@
Dream And Do will continue her racing career for Katsumi
Yoshida, having being sold to Japan=s leading owner-breeder
after her Classic success. But there should be more to come
from the offspring of her 11-year-old dam, Venetias Dream (Ire)
(Librettist).
Glandais added, AWe kept Dream And Do=s [2-year-old] sister
by The Gurkha (Ire), who came here to Arqana to the October
Sale and didn=t make her reserve, so we put her into training
with Frederic Rossi.
AWith this colt, obviously if he sells well we will let him go, but
if we can=t sell him we will race him. We will see what the
market wants to give for the horse and the idea is very much to
sell him.@
Glandais was heartened by the busier sales yards at Arqana on
Monday, which included teams from Coolmore, Godolphin and
Al Shaqab.
He said, AThere seem to be enough people here looking at
horses. Obviously not as many as usual as some people have not
been allowed to travel, but I believe some bloodstock agents
have been asked to do short lists for people who couldn=t come,
which is a big help. We all need to work together to help the
industry because we are all in the same boat.@ Cont. p4

The sale=s move, first from mid-August to late September, and
then forward to this week, has meant only minor adjustments to
the schedule for the Normandy

yearlings, including another colt
by No Nay Never and fillies by
Camelot (GB) and Dabirsim (Fr).
AWe are missing two weeks=
prep because the sale was
arranged for the end of
September, but I think people
will excuse that,@ Glandais
noted. AThe good thing is that
the sales are still later than they
would usually be and August can
come a bit too soon for some
horses. The English sales are in
October and, generally, from my
own experience, the yearlings
are better in October as they
don=t have to be pushed and
they have some extra time at
grass.@
Olivier Carli, who keeps 25 of his own mares at Logis Saint
Germain among a similar number for clients, also has a string of
Flat and National Hunt horses in training in France.
AThis year, we have changed our direction a little bit because
of the success of the filly, so we
are inclined to race some more
fillies,@ said Glandais. AWe have
about 20 horses in training,
some of those in partnerships,
and we want to get a good
balance between our racing yard
and the farm. We also have five
or six jumpers and we buy some
horses in training as well.@
The sale of Dream And Do,
though a loss to the farm as a
future broodmare prospect, will
help to keep the wheels turning
as the racing string expands.
Glandais acknowledged,
ASometimes when the right offer
comes you have to let them go,
and she has gone to a great
owner and we still have her
sister.@

Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale Cont. from p1
Though only in its fourth year, this auction had momentum of
its own through the racetrack endeavours of its graduates,
notably group winners at Glorious Goodwood and the Ebor
Meeting this summer acquired for a combined ,22,500.
Nor was it too demanding to build on that success from such a
low base, with both the character and cost of the stock holding
appeal even to trainers who may find themselves shorter of
orders than usual.
All that said, it felt like no mean feat--especially after those
bruising opening skirmishes at Doncaster last week--even to
tread water in terms of the average, never mind actually to
advance it.
Conversion was required to compare this sale with 2019, one
having traded in guineas and the other in sterling. But the
indices were very positive: the average up 13%, from ,10,684 to
the equivalent of ,12,110; and the median up five% to an
effective ,8,400 from ,8,000. A much-expanded catalogue,
however, was the principal driver to turnover soaring all the way
up to ,2,458,418 from ,1,356,850.
Last year, three lots made ,40,000 or more; this time round,
selling with "the extra shilling", there were eight that realized
40,000gns and above. Even allowing for the extra 90 lots into
the ring, that ratio suggests the quality has more than kept step.

We have witnessed robust trade

pleasing to see gains made across the
board.Tattersalls Ascot’s Matt Prior
Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale Cont.
In a week when so many professionals are prospecting bigger
sales at Deauville and Lexington, just the sheer bustle about the
place was heartening. Remember that yearling vendors had
embarked on the sales season in a spirit of grim pragmatism, an
84% clearance rate at Doncaster indicating a willingness to cut
losses and start over. A similar outlook here appeared to be
reflected in just seven scratchings from 257 catalogued, quite
apart from another healthy ratio of 81% finding new homes.
The thrust of business can be judged from the fact that a son
of Ribchester (Ire), winner of four Group 1 prizes over a mile,
was announced from the rostrum as being by "a Mill Reef
winner." It remains to be seen whether demand can keep up
with so much supply across that commercial, sharp 'n' early
sector. For now, however, there will be plenty of people out
there willing to welcome any sign of resilience at any level of the
market.
"We have witnessed robust trade throughout the day, and it is
hugely pleasing to see gains made across the board," said Matt
Prior, Head of Tattersalls Ascot. "Vendors have noticeably
increased the quality on offer and have been rewarded with
both strong domestic and international participation.@

have assisted in the promotion

travelling from farther afield.
We look forward to charting the

Congratulations to Prior not
only on a sale that gave fresh

but also on the birth of his first

wife Amanda only at the

round.
Ringfort Continues Profitable Run The poster girl for last year's sale was Miss Amulet, winner of
the G2 Sky Bet Lowther S. at York after being picked up for just
,7,500, and her half-sister by El Kabeir duly featured in the top
echelon here when sold as lot 143 for 45,000gns. But she was
only the second leg of a productive quarter-hour for her breeder
Derek Veitch of Ringfort Stud, who had just realized the top
price of the day of 58,000gns for
a Profitable (Ire) filly presented
as lot 135.
Veitch was self-deprecating
enough to remind the press that
he had written off both Miss
Amulet herself (a i1,000 Goffs
November pinhook as a foal)
and her dam Sheena's Dream
(Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) for
virtually nothing last year. But to
make six figures from two lots
here is consistent with the rare
skills that produced a second
Group 2 winner within 24 hours
at the Ebor meeting, through
Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) in
the Al Basti Equiworld Gimcrack S.; never mind that Veitch had
bred the winner of that race last year as well, in Threat (Ire)
(Footstepsinthesand {GB}).

Michael Bell pre-COVID | Tattersalls
Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale Cont.
The Profitable filly actually shares a second dam with Minzaal,
and it is a productive family overall. Her mother is sibling to four
black-type operators, while the third dam produced two
elite-placed foals in Polar Bear (GB) (Polar Falcon) and Dance To
The Top (GB) (Sadler's Wells).
"The pick of what we've seen," said Kevin Ross, who signed the
docket on behalf of Paul and Clare Rooney. "I thought she was a
lovely filly. The sire's stamping his stock, we bought one at
Doncaster as well, and this was a lovely walker. We like a nice
athlete, and she has a lovely temperament too."
Though a May foal, Veitch expects her to be the more forward
of the pair. "I felt the Profitable was going down best, she was
getting the better interviews and comments," he said. "And she
did look a queen up here: it wouldn't have mattered what sale
she was at, she'd have stood out. She looks a May, June sort,
whereas the other one will need a bit more time. But she'll have
residual value for sure, and if Miss Amulet wins the Cheveley
Park she'll be worth a lot more than that."
Potentially, indeed, the El Kabeir filly could prove well bought
even if she were never to race, and Michael Bell was duly
gratified to secure her--through son Nick--on behalf of Chris
Wright. After all, despite her cheap export to Italy here last
December, Sheena's Dream is out of a half-sister to GI Arlington
Million winner Mill Native (Exclusive Native) and French Classic
runner-up French Stress (Sham).
"Chris is a longstanding owner, and he's got a stud farm, so
we're delighted," Bell said. "Annoyingly, we did look at Miss
Amulet last year but didn't buy her. I must admit I have precious
little recollection of doing so, but I know we looked at all the
grey fillies. And I do know this is a bigger individual. I bought an
El Kabeir at Doncaster as well, so I'm putting a few eggs in his
basket."
Wright's "grey filly" formula has worked at this sale in the past,
notably through listed winner Flippa The Strippa (Ire) (Outstrip
{GB}), a ,10,000 graduate of the 2018 edition.
"It's great for Tattersalls, the way this sale has expanded,"
Veitch remarked. "I thought it might go backwards, with those
numbers, by diluting it. But actually I think the horses have
stepped up. Big vendors who are at all the other sales are
supporting it, and I think that's a sign the sale's going the right
way."
As for Ringfort's own remarkable month, he said with a grin:
"Somebody might think I know what I'm doing soon! This here
was a great few minutes--a magic few minutes, in the current
climate."
Kildangan Pair in Demand It was Michael Donohoe of BBA Ireland who found Miss
Amulet last year, and he returned to the well for lot 166, a
40,000gns Profitable colt consigned by WH Bloodstock. In the
process he added to the laurels of the sale-topper's young sire,
whose first yearlings must work off a fee of i12,000.
"There are a couple of nice Profitables in the sale, and I think
he has a chance," said Donohoe, who was operating for a
Middle-Eastern client. "This one was certainly a nice physical, a
lovely individual. He has the premiums so he may well end up in
France, he looks like he could be an early sort for there."
Profitable will certainly live up to his name if he can match his
Kildangan buddy Night Of Thunder (Ire). The way he is going,
Night Of Thunder is threatening to become a rarity at this level,
and Joe Foley was duly delighted to pick up his daughter out of a
winning Singspiel (Ire) mare for 44,000gns as lot 93. Cont. p9

Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale Cont.
Foley, acting for Clipper Logistics, reiterated his admiration for
Singspiel as a broodmare sire, citing the prolific Suedois (Fr) (Le
Havre {Ire}) as well as Lady Kaya (Ire), the Classic runner-up by
Ballyhane's own Dandy Man (Ire).
This was Foley's first visit to the sale, but he was one who felt
he would have been equally likely to attend at the usual venue.
"Nice horses have been coming out of it every year," he said.
"So we thought we had better come and take a look."
Night Of Thunder also stoked up the embers of the session
when Mark Grant gave 42,000gns for a colt (lot 254) out of an
unraced Pivotal (GB) mare to prep for the breeze-ups. "That's a
great cross: I love a Pivotal mare and the sire's on fire," Grant
said. "I've been waiting all day for this one, he's a lovely horse.
We did well with a Night Of Thunder last year, but I didn't think
I'd be able to get another one."
Rookie Sires All the Way Predictably enough, other new sires contributed to the higher
yields of the day. One was Ardad (Ire), whose daughter out of a
young, unraced Poet's Voice (GB) mare made 43,000gns from
Peter and Ross Doyle as lot 105.
Consigned by Britton House Stud, she brought a strong page:
most conspicuous, among other brisk performers, being her
granddam's half-brother, champion sprinter Sakhee's Secret
(GB) (Sakhee).
"Nice, racy filly who fits the bill physically for us," declared
Ross Doyle. "She has a good bit of size to her and a good, tough
attitude, and that nice back pedigree too. We like the Ardads.
He was a well-bred horse, and fast, and it's a good sign when
you see a first-season sire stamping his stock."
Pick of the early trade, meanwhile, had been the Cotai Glory
(GB) colt sold to Robson Aguiar for 40,000gns as lot 36 through
Owenstown Stud. "He's a very strong colt," said the breeze-up
pinhooker. "We're here looking for Ascot horses and he looks
the right kind."
This is the first foal of the stakes-placed Island Vision (Ire)
(Arcano {Ire}) and John Tuthill was delighted for the client who
owns her. Tuthill reports that the farm's star mare Choose Me
(Ire) (Choisir {Aus}), dam of Persuasive (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}),
has a full-brother to that Group 1 winner heading to Book I here
next month. "He's a strong, good-looking colt," he said. "My big
dream."
A World of Encouragement The last word goes to Mouse O'Ryan, who caught the upbeat
mood of proceedings after giving 47,000gns late in the day for a
January colt by another young sire in Mondialiste (Ire),
consigned as lot 225 by Norris Bloodstock. The dam is also just
getting started, but her mother is G2 German 1000 Guineas
winner Penny's Gift (GB) (Tobougg {Ire}).
"Lovely horse," said the agent, who was acting for Richard
Fahey. "Really sold himself, and you have to give the sire a
chance: he was a very good racehorse, and a very good-looking
one too. Trade is good. I think trade at every sale since lockdown
has been good. The clearance rate is high, and the breeze-up
men are reinvesting, which is great. People are realistic. They
want to get business done. This is a great game to defy anything
that's going on in the world. People are very resilient. Long may
it continue."

AThe owners have turned down some big offers,@ he

Hong Kong wanted him really badly. If one person had owned

Saturday, as long as the horse is fine. That will be his last run of

Mark Johnston and stakes winner English King (Fr) (Camelot

the Sept. 13 G1 Grand Prix de Paris.
AHe=s in great form and is all set to run somewhere this

Third in the G1 Darley July Cup S. at Newmarket on July 11, the
AlMohamediya Racing colourbearer was fifth in the G1 LARC
Prix Maurice de Gheest on Aug. 9 and completed the trifecta in
the G1 Betfair Sprint Cup S. at Haydock on Sept. 5.
AHe=ll most definitely go there,@ said Cox. AThat was definitely
the worst ground he=s run on, which means we have a very
versatile performer that can perform on quicker or slower

AHe ran a super race. He was drawn in the middle and he

regardless of their own identity. The goals of Racing With Pride
is as follows:
$ Support: offer a safe space for LGBT+ people and allies
to meet, receive support, have fun and enjoy racing
online and in person.
$ Awareness: promote a better understanding of LGBT+
inclusion to ensure racing is everyone=s sport,
encouraging all to step up as allies.
$ Engagement: provide a platform for the sport=s LGBT+
community to have a collective voice in shaping the
industry=s future LGBT+ activity.
Racing With Pride will be based primarily on social media
through a secure Facebook group and updates on upcoming
activities will also be available through the Racing With Pride
Twitter account. For more information, please go to
www.britishhorseracing.com.
AGiven the recent coronavirus pandemic, many of us have
experienced increased feelings of isolation and loneliness over
the past few months, and research shows that these feelings
and associated mental health issues are heightened within the
LGBT+ community,@ said British Horseracing Authority Head of
Diversity and Inclusion Rose Grissell. AWe recognise this
additional vulnerability and believe now is the right time to
ensure racing=s LGBT+ participants and fans feel included and
valued.@ Cont. p13

She added, ARacing With Pride has been developed following
recent research in the sport which indicated many individuals
who identified as a sexual minority did not feel comfortable
>coming out= at work, despite largely positive attitudes towards
sexual minority individuals throughout the sport.
AWe hope to create a fun and fully inclusive community by
providing a safe space for members to come together and share
their experiences and to show that British racing understands
the need for everyone involved in the industry to feel welcome.@

Wales=s S.-winning sire Free Eagle (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) and
the classy Custom Cut (Ire) (Notnowcato {GB}) and Sapphire (Ire)

COOLMORE LEGEND ASSOLID AS A ROCK
By Bren O'Brien
A pair of group wins as both a sire and broodmare sire over
the weekend only confirm that there are very few stallions who
can rival Coolmore's legendary Fastnet Rock when it comes to
pure consistency in producing stakes quality horses.
Saturday's victory by Dreamforce in the G2 Tramway S.
ensured Fastnet Rock has now had an Australian stakes winner
in each of the 13 racing seasons since his first crop hit the track
in 2008/09. His 98 stakes winners have combined for 201 stakes
wins in Australia, while his global total of stakes winners is 158.
This year, Fastnet Rock is shooting for a 12th straight season
inside the Top 10 Australian stallions--he is currently sixth--a
streak which would equal the longest marked by another
famous son of Danehill (USA), Redoute's Choice, who was Top
10 from every season from 2004/05 to 2015/16.
As a measure of comparison and an indication of the rare air
Fastnet Rock occupies, Danehill himself, a nine-time Australian
champion sire, finished Top 10 in 14 straight seasons from when
his first Australian crop hit the tracks in 1993/94 until 2006/07.
Like his sire, Fastnet Rock has been able to produce
remarkable results as a shuttle stallion, with winners in 29
countries, just two fewer than Danehill did across his
remarkable global career.
The one aspect where Fastnet Rock has outperformed his own
sire is in the success of his progeny in New Zealand, where he
has had 18 stakes winners, including the Jamie Richards-trained
Avantage, who claimed the G2 Foxbridge Plate on Saturday.
He finished third in the NZ Sires Table in 2019/20, with seven
individual stakes winners from just 20 runners. That's the
highest position by an Australian-based stallion in New Zealand
this century and represents the third time he has featured in the
Top 10.
It's noteworthy that all but two of his 18 New Zealand stakes
winners were bred in Australia, including all eight of his Group 1
winners.
His overall record in New Zealand is quite remarkable, with 82
winners from 120 starters, including those 18 stakes winners,
who have combined to win 31 stakes races. He has had a stakes
winner in New Zealand in each of the past six seasons.
"Fastnet Rock is indisputably one of the greatest stallions of
the modern era and he continues to produce elite racehorses
more frequently than any other sire," Tom Moore, Coolmore
Australia's Marketing and Nominations said.
"In the past 12 months alone he has produced 11 individual
Group 1 performers including Dreamforce, Avantage, Sherwood
Forest, Glenfiddich, Anaheed, Personal, Nudge and Prince Fawaz
as well as the likes of Tuscan Queen, Brimham Rocks, Inverloch
and In A Twinkling."
Market Demand Remains Strong And while the racetrack success rolls on, so too does the
demand for Fastnet Rock's yearlings, which averaged $295,941
in Australia in 2020 across 50 sales.

"Fastnet Rock yearlings sold for an aggregate price of
$20,000,000 or more each year for 10 years from 2010. In 2020,
his yearlings realised a median price of $300,000 which is as
high as it has ever been throughout his entire career," Moore
said. "Breeders can support him with confidence which is
reflected in the high demand for his progeny in the sales ring. To
achieve a median price that is higher than his average price
speaks volumes for the regard for which he is held in the
marketplace."
The Next Generation The other success for the weekend for Fastnet Rock came as a
broodmare sire, with Gytrash (Lope De Vega {Ire}) re-enforcing
his credentials as a serious contender for The Everest with an
upset win over the world's highest-ranked sprinter Nature Strip
(Nicconi) in the G3 Concorde S., while the promising Need I Say
More (No Nay Never
{USA}) won the G3
Northland Breeders' S. at
Te Rapa.
Out of Miss Barley,
Gytrash is one of three
Group 1 winners for
Fastnet Rock as a
broodmare sire, two of
which have been by Lope
De Vega (Ire). Gytrash's
likely rival in The Everest,
Santa Ana Lane (Lope De
Vega {Ire}), is the other
poster boy for that
combination, while the
third Group 1 winner with
Fastnet Rock as his
maternal grandsire is Waikato Stud's Tivaci (High Chaparral
{Ire}).
Fastnet Rock also has a great record nicking with the daughters
of Australia's leading non Danehill-line stallions, Pierro, Sebring
and More Than Ready (USA) as well as Coolmore's own younger
brigade.
"Gytrash and Need I Say More on the weekend further
consolidated Fastnet Rock as one of the leading broodmare sires
in Australasia," Moore said. "It is still relatively early days for
him as a broodmare sire, but to produce top-class sprinters like
Gytrash and Santa Ana Lane in such quick succession bodes very
well for the future. They have had great success when paired
with outcross sire lines and all his 17 stakes winners are at group
level.
"What we have already seen of the produce from our own
Fastnet Rock mares with American Pharoah and Justify is
particularly exciting. American Pharoah yearlings out of Fastnet
Rock mares sold for $750,000, $750,000, $600,000, $450,000,
$300,000, $300,000 in 2020 and the Justify foals out of the likes
of Atlantic Jewel, Lake Geneva, Formality and Paulownia are
outstanding."
The Sons In Australia, his influence as a sire of sires is becoming
pronounced, with 19 sons at stud, with G1 Coolmore Stud S. and
Diamond Jubilee S. winner Merchant Navy standing alongside
him at Coolmore.
The list also includes Group 1 producers Smart Missile,
Foxwedge, Wanted, Stryker and Rothesay. Rothesay is also
destined to have a contender in The Everest in Rothfire, who
was selected by miRunners for their slot last week, making it
likely there will be at least
three runners with Fastnet
Rock in their pedigree in
Australia's richest race on
Oct. 17.
Late Yarraman Park
stallion Hinchinbrook
continues to leave a legacy
for his own sire, with his
dual Group 1-winning son
Press Statement set to
have his second crop hit
the track this year, while
Kingstar Farm debuts Unite
And Conquer and Gold
Front Breeding, Leonardo
Da Hinchi.
"Already seven of his
sons have produced Group 1 winners and his
grandsons/daughters include the likes of Rothfire, Spright,
Foxplay, Beat The Clock, Press Statement and Maid Of Heaven
amongst others," Moore said. "Clearly his best sire son to date is
Hinchinbrook, which augurs well for Merchant Navy who is bred
on the same Fastnet Rock/Snippets cross. He is the fastest son of
Fastnet Rock and his first weanlings sold up to $210,000--more
than any other first crop sire this year--so we look forward to
him carrying on the legacy of his sire and grandsire at
Coolmore."
Tivaci is one of seven active stallions in New Zealand to feature
Fastnet Rock in their pedigree. There are five of his sons, El
Roca, Highly Recommended, Mongolian Falcon, Rock 'N' Pop
and The Bold One (NZ), while Grangewilliam Stud's Derryn is by
Hinchinbrook.

Success Flows Through While Coolmore's elder statesman continues to deliver, it was
also a bright weekend for two of the younger brigade at Jerry
Plains. Vancouver got his first Australian stakes winner with
Night Raid successful in the Listed Atlantic Jewel S. He then
followed that up with his first American stakes winner thanks to
Madone (USA) in the Listed Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf S. The
son of Medaglia D'Oro (USA) now has three stakes winners the
three different countries after Mount Pleasant's victory in the
G2 Nursery earlier this year. Incidentally, Mount Pleasant is out
of a Fastnet Rock mare.
Pride Of Dubai, who has had two winners to date out of
Fastnet Rock mares, celebrated his fourth stakes winner on
Saturday with the victory of Fancy Man (Ire) in the Listed
Ascendant S. at Haydock.
