Jazz History MUS 176 2013 Assignment Due – First day of presentations  Attach Blue Cover Sheet and submit to the Music Office  Late Assignments will be deducted 10% per day late  All components must be completed to receive a grade for this assignment Component A Style analysis : Essay 40% Outline The assignment is to research the historical lineage that connects a post 1950’s jazz musician back in stylistic influence. One direct example we discussed in class is Frankie Trumbauer’s influence on Lester Young in regards to sound colour (sonority) and melodic approach. Charlie Parker memorized many of Lester Young’s solo’s, which informed his own approach to improvisation. This is an example of the historical lineage that connects these three players. You may trace influences that do not adhere to instrumental/vocal groupings. For instance, saxophone players are not only influenced by other saxophone players’ ; Charlie Parker was influenced by the music of Stravinsky. I recommend that you choose an instrumentalist or vocalist closest to your area of personal study and interest ie. Voca lists research vocalists etc…. Essay –written component Discuss the musical qualities that support your exp lanation of historical lineage. In this essay you must refer to the musical elements of melody, harmony and rhythm. Relate your descriptive ideas and comparisons to the texture and sonority of the instrument. 1000 - 1500 words max with notated musical examples.
