Friday at the Leinster From Colin
An enjoyable musical evening developed mostlydue to a the efforts of vocalist Emily. She was able
to quickly adapt to the the musicians backing her
and was very entertaining for the small but
receptive audience. Jack (trom), Peter (Tenor)Malcom (alto and drums) Keith (bass clarinet) Tony
(keys and bass) Frank (bass) and Marion( keys and
recorder) quickly got into to the mood of the night.
Late in the evening Richard arrived to take over thekeyboard and injected even more excitement into
the jam.
Personally, my wife and I entertained two non
musco friends whilst the jam took place. They were
surprised by the range and quality of the music and
they thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere of theLeinstne,. Mostly they were very complimentary
about the quality meal that we shared in the
atrium. If you haven't experienced the warmhospitality and great food at the Leinster then i
suggest you give it a try.
Off to Inverloch Jazz Festival next weekend. Frank,Tony and Keith will be there to welcome you next
Friday and Sunday
Hope to see you the following Friday

From TedThere's a cat on the roof: it isn't hot, it isn't tin but it is
definitely a cat. There were jazzisti at the Leinster,
they probably weren't hot, it may not have beenjazz, but it was definitely the Leinster.... and all for a
Sunday arvo jazz jam session...
A student's lot is not a happy one:
This week saw a lively debate on Facebook from anumber of students at or near the ends of their
course at one or other of our esteemed Universities.
The debate, which is an annual event, consistentlyhas six themes, all about how to make enough
money as a jazz muso, which beg a cynical
deconstruction:
1 There aren't enough live venues: that would bebecause they tend to go broke (see 2 below)
2 We don't get paid diddley squat: that would be
because live music costs more than it makes (see 1
above)
3 If we all refuse to take low paying gigs... therewill be no gigs (see 1 and 2 above)
5 Lowlife venue managers are avaricious leeches:yup, that should persuade them to hire you...
6 We should all support each others gigs: which
you ain't doing if your idea of spending up big is to
get a door pass , and drink water.4 You can always take up teaching: your teacher
got you into this position in the first place: (send your
students to Item 1 above)We have this debate every year because that is the
exact fequency with which the Universities turn out
another batch of highly talented musicians, almostall of whom are destined to a life of washing dishes,
penury and/or teaching, and I am not sure which is
worse. Teaching probably, as it perpetuates the
system. At least washing dishes gets the dishes clean, and I am not really sure what penury entails. Not a
lot, I suspect.
Hortense, Madge from Altona, the Vicar's bicycle,
Rotten Ronnie and both Erics may be at Inverlochthis week end.
See ya at a jam? Ted

From John HannaPenny School in Maldon looking for acts to perform2.30pm Sundays
I went to a performance by Doug Owen at thePenny School in Maldon and talking to the owner
and manager, Barry Vieth is or was a big band muso
and organiser. It is a good venue and I believe Barryand his wife Marilyn are good employers of musos.
They have an excellent grand piano. I have seen
Jan Preston (piano), Miles White (guitar) and Mark
Hannaford (piano) play there. The venue probablysuits smaller groups best. I thought you might be able
to pass the word out to people looking for gigs. It’s
about an hour and a half from Melb. They are alsolooking to attract audiences from Melbourne
