Gerald Clayton is one of the rising stars of

jazz piano and has been recognized as such

in the Downbeat Critics’ Polls of recent years.

Still in his twenties, he has already garnered

recognition and accolades for his tremendous

accomplishments to date.

Gerald grew up mainly in Los Angeles with a

musical family that includes his father, bassist/

composer John Clayton, and uncle, saxophonist

Jeff Clayton. He has studied piano and

composition under Shelly Berg, Billy Childs, and

Kenny Barron.

His dynamic and award-winning sound has

been praised in the media. The New York

Times has saluted his “Oscar-Peterson like

style” and “huge, authoritative presence”. He

achieved a second place standing in the

prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute Jazz

Piano Competition. Dodging early pressures to

emerge as a prodigy, Gerald instead honed his

talents and his resolve to ensure that the next

generation of jazz performers is never lacking

for intricate, swinging pieces and performances

that are steeped in tradition while always facing

the future.

Clayton has performed with established

names in jazz - Lewis Nash, Al Foster, Terrell

Stafford, Clark Terry, Hank Jones, Benny Green,

Kenny Barron and Mulgrew Miller. Gerald also

relishes playing with jazz’s next generation

of innovators - Ambrose Akinmusire, Dayna

Stephens, Kendrick Scott and many others.

But it is Gerald’s own trio, based in New York

City and comprised of Justin Brown on drums

and Joe Sanders on bass, that provides him the

most direct opportunity to explore and expand

his own thoughts in music. After extensive

touring in Europe and the U.S., Gerald and his

trio released their debut album, “Two Shade,”

on the ArtistShare label in 2009.

In a generation of technical and resourceful

wunderkinds, Gerald Clayton stands out for his

nuanced touch, precise articulation and the

way he constructs a narrative for his solos.

Toronto-born saxophonist, composer, and

bandleader Tara Davidson is earning a reputation

for herself as one of the leading lights in the next

generation of Canadian jazz musicians. Davidson

has performed in over a dozen countries at such

prestigious venues as New York City’s Carnegie

Hall and The Sony Center in Pori, Finland. She has

earned a Bachelor’s degree for Jazz Performance,

been a “Sister In Jazz”, received an “Emerging

Artist Award”, produced two recordings as leader,

two as a co-leader, received a Juno nomination,

and performed on over ten recordings as a side

person.

Davidson has produced two recordings as a leader.

Her sophomore CD, Code Breaking, was released

in the fall of 2006. Featuring all-new compositions

and special guest, Juno award winning saxophonist,

Mike Murley, Code Breaking demonstrates an

evolution in Davidson’s sound and composing.

The 2008 Juno Awards nominated Code Breaking

for “Traditional Jazz Album of the Year”.

Davidson toured nationally as a special guest with

the Murley/Braid Quartet in fall 2006. Following the

success of the tour, Davidson officially joined the

group as a co-leader with Murley and pianist David

Braid to form the Davidson/Murley/Braid Quintet

(DMBQ). The group released their debut CD, DMBQ

Live, in January 2008 and toured officially as DMBQ

Canadian musicians such as Phil Nimmons, Paul

Read, Alex Dean, and Kirk MacDonald.

Tara is currently performing nationally with her

Jazz and R&B artist Jeff Hendrick is no stranger to success. Since

first hitting the stage at the age of seven, the accomplished singer,

songwriter, and saxophonist has emerged as one of Canada’s

brightest young music prospects. Deeply rooted in the R&B and

Soul influences of artists like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Prince, and

Michael Jackson, Hendrick’s smooth vocal offerings often conjure up

images of Philly soul rather than the Canadian prairies. His mature

and dynamic stage presence has captured fans both domestically

and internationally, and his other talents as a saxophonist and

keyboard player have truly made him a unique

musical entity.

Popular with Chicago style

step dancers across America,

Hendrick is a favorite of

syndicated ABC Radio

Networks personality

Michael Baisden and

has been featured on

his national broadcast

several times since

2006. Hendrick’s

sophomore album

‘Soul Celebration’

has sold over 12,000

independent copies in

the US, UK, Europe, and

Japan, and the singles

‘Celebrate’ and ‘Old School

Party’ have entered the

Billboard and Mediabase

Charts regularly over the

Lynne Arriale: Nuance

Lynne Arriale is still experiencing the momentum of her previous release, a dizzying flurry of magazine covers, features and stellar critical reviews heralding her skills as an “ingenious arranger, composer, soloist and performer…Arriale has made one of the most original ensemble recordings of 2009. “Nuance” is an album of brilliant group interpretations, finely crafted original material, intricate arrangements and rapt solos” (DownBeat).

Never content to rest on her laurels, Arriale strikes again with an eloquent new work of power and strength exploring previously uncharted musical waters. She’s thrown herself into the deep end of the pool with a new band of young lions, Omer Avital on bass and Bill McHenry on tenor sax, and her stalwart new drummer from “Nuance”, Anthony Pinciotti. On “Convergence”, Arriale swims to the surface with stunning adroitness, agility and finesse taking on not only the challenges of a new band, but a repertoire of six memorable originals and five unexpected pop tunes ranging from George Harrison and John Lennon’s classic, Here Comes the Sun, to Sting’s bluesy Sister Moon, the Rolling Stones’ Paint it Black, Blondie’s Call Me and Something I Can Never Have by Nine Inch Nails, all brilliantly and surprisingly re-imagined.

On her originals she demonstrates broad compositional skill and a range of cultural and folkloric influences, from the straight ahead jazz romp on Elements to the tantric excitement of Dance Of The Rain’s Middle Eastern influences featuring the highly acclaimed Israeli bassist, Omer Avital, on the oud. Celtic influences are clearly evident on the up-tempo tour de force, Here and Now and the more cerebral, rhythmic, harmonic and cultural intersections of Convergence, enhanced by the fresh, new, lyrical voice of tenorist,

Bill McHenry. Two stunning ballads, For Peace, as haunting, soulful and searching as its elusive title, and The Simple Things, a sonic snapshot of the heartfelt, universal emotions that resonate so resoundingly for all of us, each shine a light on the particular strength Arriale has of “tugging at the heart strings” (Randy Brecker), a trait that has made her a favorite of audiences internationally.

At the core of her vast appeal is the subtle, seduction of her intoxicating, memorable melodies and ability to communicate with her band and her audiences. “She achieves a special, deep connection with her audience, and the energy flows both ways. Arriale’s emotional authenticity allows her audience to feel and think along with her” (Jazz Times).

Arriale commented, “The melody is what creates a particular energy and feeling in the listener and it sets the tone. I want my solo to grow out of the melody. Ultimately people remember melodies, not harmonic progressions.” Jazz Inside says, “She’s an explorer, and a true artist with a very unique voice. She writes beautiful melodies that are memorable and singable, with mindboggling harmonic richness.”

“Jazz shouldn’t just be for jazz lovers,” explains Arriale. “It’s all about music, organized sound meant to reach people. It’s thinking outside the box in that there should be no box, actually. It’s about finding melodies that somehow resonate with listeners. Recently I’ve listened to a lot of pop and folk music, and what strikes me most about folk music is that without any harmony, the melodies have such integrity. It has made me think more about what makes a great melody, and I’ve tried to employ some of my ideas here. At the end of the day it’s about connecting with people and sharing.”

Arriale has been sharing her prolific body of audio and video recorded work all over the world since winning the 1993 Great American Piano Competition. Collaborations with icons Benny Golson, Rufus Reid, Kenny Barron and more recently, George Mraz, Randy Brecker soon followed, which speaks to her considerable skill and stature within the jazz/improvised music community. In addition to being an accomplished jazz performer and scholar, Arriale is equally dedicated to sharing her knowledge and experience through her position of Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies and Director

of Small Ensembles at the University of North Florida.

While her personal quest continues, the press is onto her remarkable accomplishments and more than eager to spread the word among jazz and music lovers everywhere. Lynne Arriale is “arguably the poet laureate pianist of her generation” (Jazz Police). “She has a genuine flair for seeing jazz potential in compositions which would not appear to suggest themselves as jazz vehicles”, says Amazon, “and is equally adept at creating refreshingly new treatments of standards and originals”. The L.A. Weekly declares Arriale “a great pianist whose beautiful and muscular playing ranks with Mehldau and Bill Evans.”

ELECTRIFIED GROOVE-JAZZ FUNKIFICATIONS

Brownman Electryc TrioThe Brownman Electryc Trio has been described by the New York Times as “an award-winning electrified modern groove-jazz trio extrapolating the ideologies of Miles Davis & Randy Brecker. This powerful 3-some combines virtuosic performance skills with a deep knowledge of the jazz lineage, all set against an urban sonic background”. Brownman Ali worked with legendary jazz-hip-hop icon Guru as a featured soloist in the Grammy winning jazz-hip-hop group Jazzmatazz.

Schooled in New York City under Randy Brecker’s watchful eye, Brownman leads no less than seven highly respected ensembles of his own spanning genres from be-bop to hip-hop. He is best known for his work as the leader his multiple award-winning electrified Miles Davis’ influenced Brownman Electryc Trio which won the 2007 National Jazz Award winner for “Electric Jazz Group of the Year” amongst numerous other accolades. Brownman himself has garnered 11 nominations over the years at the National Jazz Awards.

Despite the demands of leading 7 ensembles and a grueling international touring schedule, he is still one of the most called upon trumpet players in the Canadian studio scene. His long list of recording credits, more than 300 to date, make him “one of the most recorded trumpet players in Canadian history”, according to CBC Radio Canada.

The Brownman Electryc Trio is on the cutting edge of modern music in the nation and is widely considered to be a vanguard for the evolution of jazz in Canada.

Harrison Kennedy was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario. He was introduced to blues at a young age when artists like John Lee Hooker and Billie Holiday came to town. Growing up, Kennedy sang in church and in a blues band. He moved to Detroit in 1969 to join the soul group Chairmen of the Board, one of the most successful soul/R&B bands of the era. In the mid-’70s, Kennedy returned to Hamilton and spent some time away from the music business before returning as a blues singer and guitarist. “Hamilton’s a blue collar steel worker’s town,” Kennedy says. “The blues is deeper here.” The first blues album he put out “Sweet Taste” (2004) was nominated for a Juno Award as the best original blues album. This was followed by “Voice + Story” (Black & Tan, 2006) and “High Country Blues” (Electro-Fi 2008) which were also nominated for Junos. His most recent CD “One Dog Barkin’ (Electro-Fi) showcases his expressive vocals. His songs all tell a story, and his blues is flavoured with soul, R&B, folk and gospel. Blues legend B.B. King has hailed Kennedy as Canada’s premier blues performer.

Keith “Nappy” Lindsay has played off and on with Harrison Kennedy since the early 70’s. Besides playing accordion, and keyboards, he hosts a weekly Jazz program on McMaster University’s CFMU radio in Hamilton. He has worked on all of Harrison Kennedy’s releases.

Bassist Chris Brzezicki and drummer Grant Stovel will make up the rhythm section. They are familiar to Alberta audiences for many appearances in the regional blues and roots scene. Grant is also an music announcer at CKUA radio, and co-hosts the weekly blues program Calling All Blues at the University of Alberta’s CJSR.
